My family (all 12+ of us) went last summer and had a great experience. We had ribeyes and they were great! The staff was also very friendly. It is a very small place, we sat outside. I would go back.

There is a large sign in front of this restaurant that claims that it is most famous for their BBQ. My girlfriend and I ate there for dinner and were excited to try it. We love BBQ and any time we see a local restaurant that claims they specialize in it, we try and make room and see how it compares to other places we've been.

We were on a camping trip so we weren't trying to eat particularly fancy, so we didn't order any of their expensive dishes ( filet mignon, rainbow trout, ... ). Actually, we were slightly surprised to see a BBQ grille with $25-$30 dinners. I got the chicken fingers plate and my girlfriend got the BBQ. The chicken fingers were totally good. It's hard to mess that up. The BBQ, however, was not. Their BBQ is lunch meat with sauce on top. I've seen BBQ finely chopped, roughly chopped, pulled, and chunky; but I have never seen it thinly sliced into lunch meat with sauce drizzled on top. We try and keep an open mind about the way food is prepared or cooked so after the initial shock, we were still eager to taste it and see that it would make up for the strange preparation. Unfortunately, it didn't taste all that good either.

In addition to the not so good BBQ, the service was not outstanding either. Our waitress forgot to bring us our bread basket until after our entrees had come out, she brought cocktail sauce with the mozzarella sticks instead of marinara sauce, and the drink refills were slow and far between. Also, we watched as the two owners of the restaurant greeted every table except for ours.

In defense of Spears BBQ, I will admit that we came at about 7pm on a Sunday evening and they closed at around 9pm (maybe the waitress was tired). We also ordered kind of lower ticket items on the menu instead of the $28 filet (maybe we didn't count as much since we weren't spending $60+). Regardless, if they can't even prepare a dish they're named after, I would be very hesitant to buy a steak at this restaurant.

Pros: The atmosphere was nice. Nice tables and decor.

Cons: Untasty food, bad service, rude owners

Spear's is sort of a Linville Falls tradition, they serve a pretty good rainbow trout...I had gone there a lot as a child, so I was excited to share the restaurant with my family. What a disappointment...the staff was very rude, the owner and his waiter/son were having a huge arguement in the dining room throughout our meal. When we asked if they could make a grill cheese for our young child, they scoffed and told us to go across the street to a diner. The prices were absolutely ridiculous, and the food was average. Don't waste your time, Loiuse's is across the street and works just fine!
