I haven't been to San Remo for their lunch buffet but have tried many of their dinners that were delivered to my door. (They do not deliver at lunch time.) Everything was delicious. I have never tried one of their meals that I didn't like.

This place is located in a strip mall. That's exactly what you get. Microwaved, strip mall style food. The lunch buffet was not exactly appetizing. I don't think there was anything out there that was not under 2 hours old.\r

CHEF AND OWNER JOHNNY, ENSURES EACH DISH IS FABULOUS. BETTER THEN LITTLE ITALY...RECIPES TO DIE FOR, HOME MADE BREAD WONDERFUL. IF YOU WANT CHAIN FOOD...EAT AT A CHAIN...THIS IS A NEIGHBORHOOD PLACE WITH EXCELLENT EVERYTHING. AFTER MEETING JOHHNY AND WIFE, WILL ONLY GIVE OUR "ITALIAN" BUSINESS TO A REAL ITALIAN. AS A CHEF MYSELF, I APPRECIATE THIS ESTABLISHMENT EVEN MORE! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

While my family has frequented Johnny's restaurant several times over the past few years, and have loved his great food, atmosphere and service; we were pleasantly SHOCKED this evening at the Monday night buffet he recently initiated. It is by far the best "bang for your buck" in Cary. While the present economy can make it hard for families to eat out, this is an awesomely affordable deal! For just 10.99 we were treated to absolutely the "biggest little buffet " we have ever seen! Johnny's place is fairly small, and he strategically tucks a well-stocked buffet in a small corner of the restaurant. Upon our arrival, my husband and I took a quick glance and immediately decided we wanted to try it out. We were treated to fresh greens with tomatoes and cucumbers, several delicious chicken dishes that were outstanding, a pasta dish, a potato dish, fantastic ribs, onion rings, his traditional pizza, rolls, and desserts. They also bring his amazing bread to the table as well. Johnny also will treat all children aproximately 10 and under to the buffet for just a mere 2.99!!! What child wouldn't want all the ribs and pizza he/she could eat for a mere 3.00! WOW! We were totally impressed and plan to go back as soon as next Monday evening with our boys. Johnny just started this buffet about 2 months ago and my guess is, once the word gets out, you'll have a very difficult time getting seated! Check it out soon, before the line reaches outside to get in! It's worth the trip!

Pros: Best buffet for quality of food and price in Cary

Cons: none

.

I have always been impressed with the quality of food ... Johnny cares about his dishes and takes the time to visit the tables to make sure his customers enjoyed their meals.

The people that frequent the restaurant give it a real 'neighborhood' feel ... everybody is friendly with everyone else and always welcome newcomers.

Thank you to the family that makes this place happen !!!

If you like Italian cuisine...You MUST vist San Remo!

Last week I stopped into San Remo for the Lunch Buffet on a recommendation of a friend. Every dish was a fantastic surprise and delight to the palette. I found their selection to be be both fresh and broad.

The staff was very friendly and down to earth, so much so that they made you feel welcomed from the moment you walk in.

Great Food, Great Price!

San Remo has made my lunch rotation for certain. And I will also be adding San Remo to my dinner card.

Pros: Lunch Buffet

.

The buffet at lunch is diverse and very filling for the price. You definitely get your moneys worth! The fresh dough knots/balls with icing and chocolate drizzels is the bomb. I've been for dinner about 3 times since I have lived in the area. Each time the experience has been excellent. The obviously family run restaurant really makes you feel like a part of the community/family (and I'm not Italian).

If you want great food at a good price, this is the place to visit. The Baked Lasagna is a steal for the price! BTW, went there one night for a "wine tasting".....WOW, what an experience that was. You got to try it!

Don't let this "new" review fool you. The rating for this place is around 3 stars in another page of around 20 reviews.

The server for my party was horrible. She mentioned several times that she wanted to go home and was rude. When we asked to speak to the manager, he had "gone home" for the night. At least we didn't have to tip! Bad food, bad service, terrible location, cramped, expensive! UGH. Save your money and go to The Olive Garden, Carrabas, Daniels, or make your own!

It's taken me a litle while to post this review, but after reading several of the others, I noticed that there are complaints about the bread. While it may be faccacia (sp?) type, it is definately in spirit only. The bread is soggy and the sauce tastes like the tomato paste you would get at a fast food pizza buffet restaurant. the entree(s) that i have had here are okay, but only okay because the prices are pretty steep. Probably, you'd be better off buying a can of tomato paste yourself and spending 20 minutes making sauce instead of wasting 50 bucks on two people for poor bread and overpriced food, no matter how appetizing it may smell. i have never had too many issues with the service, but in my past visit, the high school type atmosphere of the establishment is obvious and that is something I do not want to tolerate when I'm spending hard earned money. I want atmosphere with my food, not squeals and gossip and chatty staff who don't care about my needs. Definately gone downhill. I think in Cary I'll be going elsewhere from now on.

I went to go to this establishment to eat, but it was closed before the posted hours were reached. I had been here before, with satisfactory results, but it is irking to try to get something (to go even) and to be hamstrung by the place not even being open when you try to go in! I won't be back, open or not!

My family and I went to San Remo for the lunch buffet and the food was day old and cold. The owner Johnny was very dry and cold when we mentioned our concern.
Very slow in getting food and drinks. Food is bland.

The small dinining area is unclean as is the carpet. Do yourself a favor and go elsewere!

My family ordered take out from San Remo this past weekend. We were very pleased with the experience. My husband and I shared the appetizer special (prosciutto wrapped shrimp) and the steak special (10oz. filet). They were both very delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly and was very tender. We ordered chicken fingers and baked ziti off the kid's menu for our children. My son ate every bite of his chicken fingers meal. My daughter barely made a dent in her baked ziti because of the very generous portion we received! We would recommend San Remo to anyone.

Pros: Food/Service/Atmosphere

Cons: Not closer to my house

I moved to this area from the N. Raleigh area a couple of years ago and immediately set out to locate an establishment to entertain clients and to dine regularly. I found it when I walked through the door the first time and was warmly greeted by Carla (front manager/ bartender/owner's sister). I patronize San Remo a minimum of 4 times per week for lunch or dinner, alone or with clients, and have never experienced the problems I see in some of the other reviews.

The food is always good, the staff courteous and efficient. Johnny, the owner, is a fabulous chef and enjoys his patrons. Carla and Julie are excellent bartenders. Wait person Rachel (mentioned by vlsmith4 in her review) has waited on us many times, and I have not one negative remark to make about her.

I'm sorry vlsmith4 had such a bad experience. I usually try to discuss coupons in advance, take notice of hours of operation in establishments I patronize and treat all staff as I like to be treated. I guess that's why I don't have a negative experience to report here.

Try San Remo (not San Carlo). I'm sure you'll have an enjoyable experience! And many of you will be pleased that San Remo is now a NON-SMOKING establishment.

I have been dinning at San Remo for several years now and the food and service is outstanding! Chef Johnny creates incredible dishes and the nightly specials are amazing!!! Carla and Julie are a delight behind the bar and can fix any type of drink you can imagin. All wait staff are professional and welcoming!

The atmosphere is quant and elegant. An excellent dinner choice or just a wonderful place to go for a glass of wine and great conversation!

I highly recommend San Remo to anyone who has yet to dine there! You will return many more times!!!

I guess you get what you pay for. The much ballyhooed lunch buffet that I read about on the website failed to live up to expectations. I was on the border of Apex/Cary and wanted some Italian fare for lunch, but this was very disappointing. It is never pleasant to have old food on a buffet. I understand that buffets are money makers for the business, but can we get something that isn't rock hard or that hasn't been sitting out since lunch opened? I won't be going back for lunch, that's for sure.

Patrons, please don't order anything with red sauce on it. I wasn't aware that ketchup was the new vogue for marinara.

The tiramisu looked like a semi truck had rolled right over it. Flat and gross with too much caramel and chocolate syrup. It's supposed to be ladyfingers with liqeuor, not some sort of pancake disaster. I didn't know chocolate went on tiramisu?

Lastly and probably worst, there was hardly any room at this place. The tables were all cramped together and there was no privacy or intamacy. This is not the type of place to take a date or your wife.

hmmm, from reading the reviews of this restaurant, seems a few people don't understand how city-pass works. they set out a list of holidays that coupons are not allowed. i personally saw one of the people in vlsmith's party pwnt the manager when he read aloud to him that independence day was not one of the excluded holidays from the city pass book and then he dejectedly took the coupon. that manager also would not come out to talk to the party since he had been humiliated before about the coupon usage. COULD NO ONE AT THE RESTAURANT READ THAT INDEPENDENCE DAY WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE EXCLUDED HOLIDAYS?!!? apparantly not, and with a community college right across the street!!

seems interesting that the group at the bar had open tabs and that the manager would leave before they were all closed. what type of restaurant or business has the boss leave before all money is accounted for?

perhaps the best part of the whole encounter was that with such shoddy service, no tip had to be left. a coupon and no tip, that seals the deal. I may just keep bringing coupons to this restaurant and leave no tip forever! so long as the food is edible, why not get a half priced meal and leave no tip!

So if you are in the mood for a half priced meal and bad service for which you will have to leave no tip, make sure to go here! You won't be able to complain the manager (he apparantly goes home before the staff), but you will have a discounted price and no gratuity. That's a win win.

I moved here recently and this is one of the first restaurants I have visited. I don't have reason to go anywhere but here for every occasion. The people here have treated me with such family oriented ideals that I almost feel at home. I love this bar and restaurant. I was just here for my birthday and the owner and all the staff made sure to make it known that it was my day and they did such fantatsic things for the group I brought in, I can't begin to show my gratitude. This is a place for everyone. I LOVE it!

I am solely commenting on a review by someone who I personally saw in this restaurant the day that their review discusses. I would like to make it apparent that we also had Rachel (and granted I have never had this waitress before) but I came in with 7 people and was catered to all night to the epitome of perfection. Rachel was a great waitress, she did her job and we ordered apps, dinners, wine , and the desert. The owner also did a phenomenal job of making us feel comfortable and personally made sure we were happy with everything we ordered. I will say that this group that was seated next to us did seem to enjoy their dinner, after their discrepancy about a coupon they had that specifically said "void on holidays" (it was July 4th) was honored by the management after they pulled up a list of what was considered a holiday. I'm sorry I think July 4th is a holiday. Maybe management made that same mistake. The coupon was then honored for them. As they left, they asked the bartender, Julie, for the manager. She told them that he had left for the night ( most manager's can leave an establishment with employees that they can trust ) which was true and they made a comment about us being at the bar finishing our wine from dinner, they then proceeded to leave the restaurant and yell to the bartender and all of us sitting at the bar, " good thing this bar doesn't have a problem serving people that make less money than we do "

It was an escalated situation that never should have taken place considering they were given everything they asked for; including the coupon that blaintly said no holidays. I would prefer to never see this group in a restaurant because what they did was absolutely inappropiate and embarrasssing not only for themselves but to a place that only deserves the best of reviews.

PS: what i forgot to mention is...way to go san carlos...just so you know if you decide to make a pathetic review...atleast get the name right. It only shows that you're ready to do that fpr any restaurant that gives you everything...i feel bad for the next.

There is always a great time to be had at Johnny's place. There is always a friendly face to greet you and the food is always freshly made. A taste of old world Italian cooking with a neighborhood feel. Try the Passion Martini - Carla's greatest invention!!!

Some friends and I visited San Carlo this evening arriving at around 8:30PM looking forward to a wonderful Italian meal. We were seated in a booth and promptly greeted by Rachel, our server for the evening. Everything started out great, we got our drinks, gave our order and received a huge plate of varietal bread. Our meals came, perfectly prepared and full of great taste. However, I have to say that things took a turn for the worst just as we were finishing up our entrees. Rachel seemed to be in a hurry to leave for the evening and her pleasantness quickly turned to bitter disregard for our patronage. She was concerned about not having "time to do anything when [she] got off work." And was off put when we asked her about desserts. We needed to see a menu and she was clearly irked that we weren't sure what we wanted right away, even making a comment that the kitchen was closing in 30 minutes and we should hurry to make our orders. At this point, she is no longer smiling and is obviously annoyed that we are still there. Our desserts come (3 creme brulees and a tiramisu) and tasted great. However, when the bill came, and you can believe it came in a hurry, there was a small disagrement regarding a coupon from the Citi Pass book that we wished to use against our bill. Rachel said that she would not accept it because it was a holiday. We requested to speak with a manager (who's name we were not able to get), we showed him the book where Independence day was not listed as one of the exceptional holidays and he accepted the coupon. While the manager was at the table, and Rachel was taking the checks, with our credit cards, to process the payments she made a comment under her breath that it was already 10:00 PM. Her and the manager walked away from the table at the same time. Within 5 minutes Rachel returned with our bills and noted that the coupons and been accepted, "by the way," she added "we are already closed." We said that shouldn't matter, we were seated well before closing and were frankly in disbelief that she even would say such a thing. We asked to speak with the manager again and Rachel walked off. We waited around for a few minutes and asked the bartender, Julie, if she could get the manager. We were told that he had already left for the evening. Which we found suspicious considering we had just spoken with him about 5 minutes earlier and there were no less than 6 people being served alcohol at the bar. We could not believe that the manager would leave before all tabs / checks had been settled for the evening.

As paying customers we find it completely unacceptable to be treated as we were this evening in your establishment. We in no way did anything to deserve such treatment. We are completely baffled that adding 4 desserts to our order would instigate such behavior from our waitress. While we did find that the food was great, the way we were treated will keep us from coming back. We hope that strong considerations will be taken with Rachel as you can be assured that her hastiness and rude behavior has cost you future business. We will use every resource available to let people know how San Carlo treats its paying customers.

My family gets pizza from here almost every Friday and it's always wonderful. My family won't eat pizza anywhere else! I have never had a soggy pizza. We have also tried lots of entrees and we are never disappointed, everything is always so fresh. Sometimes, when they are really busy, the wait can be a little long, but what do you expect when everything is cooked fresh? It's always worth the wait for fresh and delicious food. The family that owns the resturant are great and hard working people. I have never been there when a family member is not behind the counter working. The chef/owner is always there and really cares about the food he is making. His sister works behind the bar and always greets us by name when we come in, we really feel appreciated. Give this place a try and I bet you won't be disappointed! If for some reason you are disappointed let a staff member know and I'm sure they will fix the problem, they seem to really care what their customers think and want everyone to be happy. In these hard economic times shouldn't we be supporting our locally owned and operated business?

Pros: PIZZA!! BREAD! SERVICE!

Cons: parking can be a pain when you are in a hurry

Everytime we order a 16 in. pizza from here, the crust is so soggy, especially in the middle. You can't even pick it up, you have to eat it with a fork. It's just mushy. This is needless--they should fix this problem by crisping up their crust or something. Too bad. There is a new Italian place just across the street, and their pizza is nice and crisp. Unfortunately, we'll be ordering from there next time. :(

We went to San Remo because of a coupon special. It is tucked away in Millpond Village, so we had not known it was there. The food was really excellent, and the service was also great. Our only complaint was that when you enter the restaurant, a smoky bar is what you must immediately walk through. The restaurant is so small that even though we requested a non-smoking area, we could see and smell the bar area while we were there. This is a shame, because we really liked the food. On the night we were there, they also gave every lady a rose as she left - a nice touch!

I moved to NC 3.5 years ago and discovered this place about 6 months after I settled in, what a treat! It is a family owned business and they think a lot of makiing new friends of their customers. I have had just about everything on the menu and have loved every meal I've been served...some of my favs are the Pizza!, Shrimp DeCasa, Calamari, Ravioli, Lasagna, and the Eggplant Parmagiani! Never knew I liked eggplant parmagiani until I had it here, now I love it! Amazes me to read a few of the reviews on here and all I have to say is if you are looking to use a coupon for a pizza, well...you should probably stay in and call one of the local chains for delivery! I mean, come on...this is an authentic Italian restaurant, I think it's generous that they even offer a coupon for the entrees! Everyone from the hostesses/hosts to the owner are very kind, generous and hard-working. Now my favorite, the bar crowd! What a bunch of great people! They will make you feel right at home here. I, myself, have made this place my home away from home. Coming from Northern VA without my friends and family, the patrons and the bartenders have made my transition bearable. I can't tell you how many laughs I experience each night I am there. It's hugs and kisses hello and goodbye each night...just can't get that anywhere! Oh, and their dinner specials are very plentiful and amazing, you'll love them. And they also offer wine tastings each month (last Monday) and every few months they have a wine dinner which is an incredible experience. So come on in, say hello, have a drink(s) and a very tasty meal...you won't regret it.

We always eat in at San Remo's and it's always been fantastic! The ravioli is too die for! Every kind I've I tried has been fantastic. If your lucky they'll have the mushroom ravioli, my favorite! We have been very happy with everything we've had, including steak that they cook on a grill! Fantastic. Our service has always been very nice, and they are child friendly which really helps us. This grill is a diamond! Oh and ask for the lemon cake for dessert, OMG, it is so good!

We had the same problem with our Citipass coupon. They would not honor the coupon since we purchased pizzas. San Remo needs to make certain that this is printed on the coupon. Otherwise, it is misleading. Amedo's in Raleigh will honor the same type of coupon so we'll be going there more often.

The food is good at San Remo but it is pricey at night. I probably won't be going back after the coupon ordeal.

This place was disappointing. The food was mediocre (at best) but unfortunately we had a Citipass coupon that we tried to use there. I ordered the spaghetti putenesca (which was not fresh pasta and they didn't even have the anchovies that they had advertised) and my wife and son ordered a pizza which was not too bad, but nothing great either. The waiter (not his fault, it was the managers fault for not telling him) didn't tell us up front that they wouldn't honor the coupon for pizza. We showed him the coupon when we first sat down, and he said no problem. After the bill comes out, THEN they say that pizza doesn't count as an entree. We told them that they should be upfront about policies like that and the coupon said nothing about it, however it fell on deaf ears and it cost us $50 for a mediocre meal that would easily have been beaten by a $35 meal at Carrabas.

Ate here about a year ago when in the area looking at houses, and I remember not being impressed with the food. Decided to get take out because my spouse was in the area already and I was too ill to cook. Ordered the penne primavera, thinking it would be one of the healthier options due all the vegetables in the dish. Instead it was drenched in a ton of butter. I suspect the vegetables were once frozen, due to the lack of color in them and the fact that they were all overcooked and soggy. There were no fresh tomatoes in the dish as the menu promised. The bread was chewy and soggy, so clearly it wasn't fresh either. I didn't even bother to eat the salad which looked dry as if it had been prepared hours ago. I think I'd even choose the Olive Garden over this food.

My husband and I decided to try a new restaurant this past Mother's Day, and we were very happy we did not take either one of mothers along with us. We had a reservation at 7 pm, arrived on time to find our table taken. Quickly they cleared a table for us - and then seated us in the middle of an over-crowded room. After viewing menu selections, we had some questions - few of which our waitress had answers to. Once informed that they were our of meatballs, we decided on our Entree choices. The fresh Italian bread that was "baking in the oven" never did arrive to our table. I ordered the Gnocchi with a simple spaghetti sauce. The Gnocchi were so under cooked, the entire inside of them was dough. I had to return it for a bowl of Spaghetti, (meatball-less), and wonder where the flavor was in this "homemade" sauce. My husband ordered a Chicken Frances dish, that was lacking flavor and presentation to say the least. The side order of Italian sausage we ordered to share came all chopped up in a pool of marinara sauce. By the time we left, the guy at the bar - who had been served one too many Martinis was freely letting the F-Bomb drop. Our salads were barely average, entrees disappointing, service was marginal, and overall evening out a bust. We walked out after dropping $60.00 - and both remarked that we would have had a much better evening out at Carrabbas. Save your money, this is not a place to take a date, friend, or a family member. Both Daniel's and Carrabas offer better overall dining experiences, as well as a much higher quality of
food !

My wife and I went on Saturday, 2/16/08. We made a reservation and were seated promptly. The place is small, but it was full. We both ordered specials. She had the lobster ravioli and I had the mahi-mahi. We ordered calamari for an appetizer. No complaints about the service. Our server was great.

The fried calamari was ok. not great. A sign of good calamari is that it should have some flavor without any sauce. This stuff was bland, but we have had worse.

The salads came next. nothing spectacular but the balsamic vinagrette my wife ordered was awful. She opted for ranch. My italian dressing was ok. We only ate half of our salads.

The entrees came and they looked good, but it ended there. My mahi-mahi was blackened and covered with clams casino and italian bread crumbs over a spinach & egg pasta with a lemon butter sauce. It was way too saltyy. I had to scrape off the clams and bread crumbs. There was too much sauce on the pasta which overpowered everything. I picked out the fish and ate it with the pasta and minimal suace. it was ok.

My wifes lobster ravioli was tough and lacked flavor. Again, nothing worth raving about.

As for dessert, we finally found a plavce that serves tartufo's. It is a basically a giant baseball sized bon-bon. A ball of vanilla ice cream around an almond covered cherry. Then the whole thing is covered in chocolate. It comes cut up in quarters. But this one had some other flavor ice cream with a caramel center. We were not informed of the change until after it was served. And then on the plate they put a giant blob of runny chocolate mousse. Not what we were expecting. It was ok.

Overall we were not impressed with the place. For good, non chain italian food, we will continue to go to Daniels Pizza & Pasta on 55 in Apex. It might come back at some point and try something more traditional. But this was a forgetable experience. I read the other reviews were it was mentioned the chef/owner comes out and walks around. Not tonight.

My husband and I visit San Remo Restaurant at least two or three times a month. We have always been very satisfied. They have wonderful authentic Italian food. I usually choose one of their delicious special's that are posted outside on the board while my husband loves their lasagna.

The restaurant is an obvious labor of love for Chef Johnny, you can always see him going from table to table asking the diners if they enjoyed their meals.

We give San Remo Italian Grill a five star rating for their food, atmosphere and friendly service.
