I was not impressed with the BBQ pork I had, or the sides. It was very much like the McDonalds of BBQ, but not in a good way

We used to love this place but things are not the same there. Service is bad as if they are too busy to help you and it just seems dirty inside with restrooms dirty, etc. The wife who used to be there every time we were there has not been there the past several times we've been in there and that may be the difference. She seemed to be in control of what was going on in the restaurant and now there are college kids running all over the place with no one really running the show. I'm going to give it a few months and then go back but until then, beware that there has been a change in service and the food does not seem as good either. Someone here mentioned the pie and they are right. We love the peanut butter pie there and it's made by a local bakery.

My husband and I love Luella's. We eat there often. I have tried most of their menu and loved everything. Well, i don't like my collard greens cooked with vinegar. Mac and cheese is scrumptious, love those sweet potato fries and the grits with chilis, i do miss the fried onion rings they had at the other location. The beef brisket, chicken bbq and pork are all good. Wonderful ribs, lip smakin good. When we have out of town company we take them to Luella's. The most friendly staff you will ever want to meet. Have you had their pie? you are really missing out if you haven't.

i have been a very loyal luellas fan and i am shock to see any negative reviews. i think the food has only gotten better. the ribs are way more tender than before (my fav). my husband is in love with their new smoked wings that he eats them easily once a week. after reading other reviews i can only think they you people A) would not know good food if it didnt come from a drive thru window or B) have never really eaten there at all. i tell all my friends about this place. and i have never heard one negative thought. but on a lighter note. the staff is great, the food is out of this world. and i think i will be eating lunch tomorrow! pork royale here i come!!!!

Pros: the meat if full of flavor, you dont even need sauces

Cons: it is always packed and you could have to wait for some good

Andouille sausage and the brisket are faves. Love the spicy cole slaw & sweet potato fries! The music and the general vibe are convivial, with speedy and fun waitstaff. Prices are reasonable, good beer selection and specials. Can be cool on frigid nights, but the fare is worth it!

My wife and I daytripped to Asheville from Knoxville, planning to take the Blue Ridge Parkway and Newfound Gap back home after our visit. We stopped in Luella's for lunch. I had the brisket and my wife had the dry-rubbed ribs. The brisket was good, but not exceptional. The ribs looked great on the outside but were rife with fat, greasy, and very, very pink on the inside. We assumed it was just the pink from smoking. My wife ate about half the order before the fat content just became too much. We left Luella's thinking it was OK, but not great.

To make a long story short, after we left Luella's, we got on the BRP east of town, and it wasn't more than twenty minutes (literally in the middle of nowhere) before my wife received an emergency call from nature. Fortunately, we were reasonably close to one of the few stops with facilities on that part of the BRP. Unfortunately, as we pressed on, she received yet another colonic call to action. Since we were nowhere near any facilities, I took the first road off the Parkway I could find, which ended up being 215 south to Rosman. After a miserable half hour (or more) of the most winding, twisting, and turning road I've ever driven, we arrived in Rosman, basically lost and hours away from our intended path.

It was a nightmare that ruined what should have been a nice fall trip thought the mountains, and it all happened because Luella's couldn't cook a side of ribs until they were done.

Luella's has moved and now they're horrible! When they were in South Asheville, their food was wonderful. But in the new location on Merrimon, the menu is different and so is the food. How different? We thought surely they had changed hands, that's how different! The best thing they had before was beef ribs; not on the menu now. (But don't worry, they do still have the pork ribs, which were horrible before!) Brisket used to be REALLY good, now it's prepared with chilis. But the waitress assured us, GUARANTEED us, it wouldn't be spicy. WRONG! We asked her if we could get the fries crispy. "They always are" she said. WRONG, they were soft and limp. "The more fat, the better, on that brisket" I said. It was all lean, just like my wife's sandwich. Speaking of the sandwiches, they were on half-toasted bread, instead of a bun, which just does NOT work with a saucy sandwich.
Luella's has gone from a great barbecue joint to just another restaurant with so-so food. We won't go back.

First trip to Luella's on Merrimon. I won't return. I had the pulled pork sandwich, fries and hushpuppies. The pork was nearly flavorless. Sauce provided on the tables was separated and in a clogged container. Fries were pale and cold. Hushpuppies too mild and greasy. It's in my neighborhood and I was hoping for some good bbq. The prices were reasonable but the food was disappointing.

BBQ? Not, roast pork! Sauces were, YUK! Beans were edible but something a teenager might throw together. Hushpuppies did not resemble HP's, more like pancake batter with some corn meal thrown in, no onion, no flavor, just deep fried pancake globs! Won't be on my "return" list!

No doubt about it you will go back time and again to this barbecue diner. Service is friendly and reliable. The barbecue is just perfect and the sides are better than good. Sticky fingers are your reward for trying this barbecue

We are from Kansas City and we take our Q seriously. Luella's is absolutely favorite BBQ in town. We tried 12 Bones the other day after Obama chose to eat there and it was a real disappointment!! We went straight back to Luella's the next day! Try the smoked beef brisket, or the smoked dry-rubbed ribs, or their amazing cobb salad with chunks of smoked brisket and turkey and smoked tomato vinigrette! Also.. Their lightly breaded fried okra is amazing. Can't say enough...Luella's deserves twice the line 12 Bones has. I guess it is still a hidden gem!!

Luella's is the absolute best barbecue restaurant in Asheville. I cannot say enough good things about their food and service. It's top notch. Their beef brisket is amazing...always tender...always delicious. I crave their Cobb salad...it's just something you have to see to believe. It is AMAZING! I find that Luella's is much better than any other barbecue restaurant in town - even the more popular 12 Bones. Luella's is more consistent and I love the fact that they're locally owned and operated. If you get a chance to order the squash casserole, don't pass it up. You can't go wrong with any of their sides. The only downside for me is that I wish they were closer to Candler so I could eat there more often. Go to Luella's! You won't be sorry!

I love Luella's. Fast, delicious, affordable...and they have the best item possible on a BBQ menu: a stuffed baked potato. Try it loaded with pork...YUM! I haven't had this since I lived in AL and it is heaven. My kids love it too. Locally owned and operated, a must try.
