Ben's Place has really good food and a comfortable, friendly, laid-back environment. It is a refreshing change from all the drab chain restaurants in Raleigh. I am mostly vegetarian and a very picky eater. The staff always go out of their way to accomodate my dietary restrictions and preferences. It's amazing to me how completely crazy some restaurant reviews can be (like the psychosomatic paranoid person below who thinks someone's trying to kill her-- you belong in a nut house. I order veggie quesadillas quite often here and never had any problems. Even if it was an honest mistake, people are human; mistakes happen... get over it). CitySearch needs to be much more conscientious about the reviews they post. Make sure their legit and not from disgruntled ex-employees or people who are mentally unstable or just plain hateful. All I can say is try Ben's Place for yourself. I love it and can't say that about too many places around town.

First off i would just like to say that restaurant is not trying to "kill" anyone. We take food allergies very seriously. But as a customer in a restaurant when you are about to order food and you have an allergy to a certain food no matter how minor or serious it is you should always inform your waiter/bar tender about your allergy. Your husband of all people should know that in a kitchen many different types of food are cooked around each other. I'm amazed you haven't had a reaction at other restaurants because you decided not to inform your waiter/bar tender. I apologize to you for everything that has happened but the bottom line is its your own fault for not telling anyone about your allergy. I personally know from the server you had that night that he heard chicken quesadilla and not only wrote it down but repeated your order back to you like he does with all his customers

My husband and I are new to this side of town and my husband went in to Ben's for a burger. All was ok and he said we should go for dinner. We went with a total of 5 people for dinner. We arrived at 6:30 and ordered right away. I am allergic to Meat so I ordered a Vegtable Quesadilla. Our food finally came at 8:00 and I took a couple of bites of my food and there was Chicken in it. (I am married to a professional chef for 30 years so I know what should and should not happen in the kitchen) My husband called the waiter of and explained what happened while I took some benedryl to combat the instant throat hives! 20 minutes later the waiter came out with what appeared to be the correct thing, however after further examination there was still chicken attached to my food Instead of putting it on a clean plate they just slapped it on the existing plate. The waiter said oh im not charging you, big deal there. I went home and spent the night and all of the next day on heavy meds. They could care less even after they knew of my allergy. If you value your life Stay far AWAY from this place.

My husband and I have been to bens place for drinks before and had a fine experience. We decided to pop in for lunch on a Saturday for something different to do. Huge mistake. Our first tip off should have been the fact that there were no other customers in the restaurant at 1:15pm on a Saturday.

I now know there was a reason for the restaurant being a ghost town. We ordered quickly and food arrived ridiculously slow (over 45 minutes for a burger and pub sandwich). Our server (while completely nice) was unapologetic for the slow service. The food was mediocre at best. We will NOT be returning.

Pros: location, bar

Cons: poor service, poor food

We heard good things about the place and were looking forward to attending. We were not dissapointed. The food was good and had decent prices. Not a fancy place but a good place to get a decent meal. I wouldn't suggest going hear during sporting events if you expect to have a conversation during dinner.

Pros: Tasty food, good prices

Cons: Can be loud as it's a bar

.

Ate here recently. Was seated immediately. Waiter seemed to be high. The waitstaff kept going into the kitchen to laugh loudly about something and we would also hear them gagging. Not entirely appropriate for a restaurant. We were skeptical when we received our food, which was mildly disappointing in the end. Price was pretty good (bill for 2 was under $20), but the quality of food was lacking--standard at best. Too bad we won't be returning.

My wife and I stopped for a quick dinner hear last night. The food was pretty good the tomato bisque and the calamari appetizers were good. The mescaline salad was a little salty but my sandwich was very good, a chicken cordon bleu. Nice beer selection. At a higher price I wouldn't have been so happy but I really felt that this was a pretty good deal.

It was nice. Nice atmosphere, very casual. Food was great, especially the calamari and the fish and chips. Fat tire on draft. I was wondering from some of the reviews if the negative comments about some of the staff are just hateful competitors. Sadly no. 1 brunette hostess in particular strutted around like we were supposed to be grateful to be in her presence. I just ignored it. I have worked in restaurants and know that some staffers just do that. The boss needs to stop ignoring it. No doubt s/he knows about it.

We will go back, having said all that. The food was good and it was a new place for us. It was a nice date for an old married couple. ....and my wife liked it.

Love the fish and chips, love the fish tacos, love almost everything I've eaten. Also, did I mention the great selection of local beer on draft?

Decent food, no smoking until after 10pm makes a big difference with kids, usually a pretty laid back crowd and good beers on tap. It's awesome when you can walk home.

Excellent food and service; nice, relaxing atmosphere. By far, my new favorite restaurant in town. Best seafood I've had in awhile. The fish tacos are actually made with fresh mahi. I wish more people would share their positive experiences with others. These days, it seems like most people who write reviews on web sites like City Search are only looking for a way to complain-- especially people with personal problems who like to take their misery out on others. Let Ben's Place speak for itself... you won't be disappointed!

Really good food and friendly, prompt service. Even better, the whole restaurant is non-smoking until 10pm (they still have one room that stays non-smoking but its closed off from the bar). They have a huge patio and live music most weekends-- day and night. The setting is relaxing and unpretentious-- but it's the food that will keep you coming back. Try the entree specials whenever available-- excellent without breaking the bank!

Ok so onions are not the most common allergy but I have an onion allergy and had to send food back due to being smothered in onions - server never offered anything that could be back to the table before everyone was finished eating, he said EVERYTHING would take 20 minutes to prepare. Never offered a manager to come to the table and after others were sending off there dishes from the completed meals, the server offered 'chicken fingers'! Why would I want food AFTER the people I came to eat with had already finished? Why was I not offered a salad when I sent the food back - oh wait, because EVERYTHING takes 20 minutes to prepare........ Very disappointed in this local place that I thought would have been a great local place to eat/ drink.

The new place behind Car Max. They been here a while and the food is really good but I still have to describe where it's at. We had a casual business lunch and one of us knew all the good unusual entries. They have rooms for private gatherings.

Edit: I wrote the review below a while back, but recently dined there again and everything seemed better! The food was great and the service was pretty good. I'd recommend it for sure, especially with the weather getting nice for the patio. Also, they are nonsmoking now until 10PM which is great.

Old review:
I used to be a regular at Ben's since I live in the neighborhood, but for a variety of reasons have not been in the past 3 months or so. I used to love the food and atmosphere, and tolerated the consistently slow service.
However, I took a date there recently after speaking highly of it and it had changed for the worse.
The food, which was very good in the past, was bland and terrible this time. I hope they turn it around soon.

Pros: Still has potential..

Cons: Food has been uneven in quality

I worked at Bens Place for a while as a hostess and at first is seemed okay, it was fun and the people were kinda nice. Time went by and it got worse quick. The food is good don't get me wrong but the people are terrible. If it was not for regular customers ( such as Ben's family and friends ) the place would have been closed.

I used to go to Ben's Place frequently, but very seldom any more. The service is marginal at best, sometimes horrible and other times just adequate. The food used to be excellent, but my last two visits I could tell it is going downhill fast. I went yesterday, and the service was horrible and the place was about empty. One thing I have not heard mentioned is the fact that the tab is almost always wrong. Word of warning: always check your tab amount!!! Mine has typically been wrong about 60% of the time. I feel overall it is a management problem, and that is unlikely to improve. I foresee Ben's Place going out of business in the near future. It is a shame because it had so much potential. Now I would suggest avoiding this place and going to Manchester's or the new Leesville Taproom. Both of them have much, much better service and a very expansive menu.

I didn't know about this place until a friend recommended it. The food is really good and even as a vegetarian, I have plenty to choose from. Best of all, there is no smoking until late at night so I don't have to deal with smoke in my face while I'm trying to eat dinner at the bar. The staff are friendly and usually attentive. Overall... a great place to relax and enjoy a meal.

We went to have a beer and watch the dallas game and were pleasantly suprised to find a place not overly crowded or noisy that has great food. they had 5 tv's all with different games on and the waitress was very nice. my chicken wrap was awsome and my friend said his fish and chips were good too. i will be back.

I've been to Ben's Place several times now and the service is very inconsistent. On a recent Sunday afternoon visit we ordered drinks and waited more than 20 minutes before we got up and left. It was quite frustrating watching the waitress stand next to our drinks as she continued to talk with a friend instead of bringing the drinks out. I would say this was a case of one lousy waitress but it's happened a couple of times now so it is really a case of lousy management. At any rate I have had enough and will not be returning even though the food was actually pretty good.

Last night was the first and last time I've been to this "restaurant". I went with my hubby and two friends on a Friday night. It took 15 minutes for our waiter to take our drink order and another 10 for him to take our food order. After 45 minutes, we finally got our appetizer, "loaded" fries. They were cold and had a bare minimum of cheese and almost no bacon on them. Five minutes later, our entrees arrived and were crammed onto the table along with the now empty fry plate. They didn't even clear away the dirty, empty plates! All the meals were lukewarm and tasteless; two of them were mushy from having sat too long. My fish and chips consisted of a half inch wide piece of fish surrounded by inch-thick mushy, tasteless breading. Three small pieces lay on a bed of wrinkled, dried looking PEAS. I've never in my life had fish and chips on peas, and they weren't even listed in the description on the menu. My meal was supposed to come with a side of "homemade" remoulade--a mayonaise-based Creole dip. I had to ask for it, since the waiter failed to bring it with my meal, and then when I got it, it was relish stirred into mayo. Somehow, they managed to make this tasteless, too. When I complained about my meal to the manager, he insisted that was how fish and chips were supposed to be. I then picked up the fish and showed him how bendy and mushy it was. He offered to take it off the tab, but then asked if I wanted anything else. I told him that since no one at the table had had a good meal, I wasn't very confident that his place COULD make a good meal, so no, I didn't want anything else. I don't think this was an uncommon occurrence--judging from other reviews on this site, I think this happens a lot and that not a lot of people bother to comment on this site. As for why so many people have given this place a good review: they must either have no taste buds, no standards, or are employees of the restaurant. Go somewhere--anywhere else--to eat!

I travel to Raleigh on a regular basis and always look forward to dinner at Bens Place. I stumbled upon this restaurant by accident one night coming in from the airport and now its a must whenever I'm in town. The food is excellent-- I'm never disappointed. I have noticed some turnover in staff lately but I think it is for the better-- more seasoned and professional. I highly recommend giving this place a try...

Holy cow! Went this past tuesday. No waitress for almost 20 minutes then took almost an hour and a half to get our meal. About 45 minutes into waiting the waitress finally comes over and says they are backed up. Finally told way after they were short people. 2 or 3 of the owners./managers walked around the whole time and no one bothered to tell us that. Neither did they offer us any appetizers or free drinks or anything. Food finally arived at about 9:30 and half of it was cold like it was sitting around for awhile. I understand these things happen but they should have communicated the problem immediately instead of not telling anyone. talked to a bunch of other people there and they had the same problem. No one told them anything. I blame management for not being proactive and letting people know.

On last visit, Bens was non-smoking, no more smoke around the bar, you can now breathe while having a good cold one or enjoying good food at the bar without worrying about if a smoker is next to you. The Blue Plate Monday specials are great. $10 plate of comfort food. We will go again next Monday.

The staff was very indifferent when we arrived (party of 4) for afterwork snacks and drinks. No smiles, no welcoming jestures- just plopped us in a booth and walked away. About 10 minutes later we finally were asked for our drink order. The beer selection is ok- nothing to brag about.
Being vegetarian, I quickly eliminated about 99% of the menu and finally ordered a salad. It was, to say the least, unappetizing. The greens were warm and had a few 'past their prime' pieces. My friend's meals were described as "eh, ok". No one cleaned their plate, but we all left a little hungry.
The atmosphere was very smoky smelling, like in a smoker's car- you can tell they don't have adequate ventilation and it was quite... disgusting.
There were some younger, loud regulars there playing around with the waitstaff/barstaff- they must keep this place afloat because between the poor service, below-average food, and the stench I don't know who would recommend this place to anyone. So, I cannot recommend it to you.

In reference to the review entered before me, "Mr. Mystery Tab"... I happened to be at Bens Place the first night this guy, Peter, claimed to have had a "mystery tab" (aka he drank too much the night before to remember anything). This guy actually pulled his pants down in the middle of the bar then flicked off and mooned the bartender. What a drunken idiot! A couple of weeks later, after being banned from the restaurant, Peter shows up to apologize. After promising never to behave that way again, the restaurant owners graciously allowed him to return as a customer. Obviously, we all know by now that was a mistake! Perhaps, the hundreds of dollars a week spent on booze would be the reason "Mr. Mystery Tab" cannot seem to remember when or if he pays his tab each night. Good riddance--

Initially a neighborhood local. I LOVED the place. Spent more money in a month than I should have. All changed after one evening in early June 08. While enjoying dinner and beers with friends from out of state, Dan (owner's son)chased me down trying to collect a $17 tab from mid-April??? Keep in mind I had been going there three times a week since this mystery tab but some reason Dan decided he wanted to collect the $17 in June. Go figure. I promptly closed the existing tab ($150) paid the mystery $17 and never went back again.... HORRIBLE customer service!!!!!

The Cheers of North Raleigh. Nice selection and good quality food. My favorites are the homemade hot chips and the grilled fish tacos. I strongly recommend both. The chips have a great mix of spice with the sauce and cool with the blue cheese. The grilled tacos come with a corn relish and a southwest sauce that add some flavor and spice. Ben's also has great outdoor seating. You should check it out.

What a refreshing change from all the chain restaurants popping up all over Raleigh! A nice family owned restaurant with an interesting variety of clientelle. The food is incredible and the staff are very down to earth and eager to please. Once you try it, you'll love it. The specials are a must! I don't know what the person complaining about smoke is talking about... there is a large non-smoking section of the dining room separate from the bar area and a large patio with plenty of fresh air. I think some people have nothing better to do but complain about something. Bens Place is MY new favorite place--

Cons: more people need to know about this place... what a find!

My husband and I started going to Bens Place several months ago. We love the food and the atmosphere is so comfortable and relaxing. It is great to have so many options on the menu. We usually stick to the pub grub but recently started trying the fancier entrees. Wow! Now we're hooked for sure. We highly recommend this place to anyone who has high standards about what they eat. I am extremely picky and have never been disappointed. The staff are very attentive and accomodating as well.

Pros: comfortable atmosphere, food, service, live music on weekends

Cons: nothing

We have been to Ben's off and on since it opened. Food is usually good, especially if weather permits and we can eat outside. Otherwise, the atmosphere is "smoky" to put it politely. Even in the "non-smoking area", which is like an afterthought off to the side, smoke still permeates. Tonight as rain was approaching, we chose to order takeout. Big mistake! Now remember, it's the end of May, we only live blocks away, and somehow what we did get of our order that was correct was luke warm and unappetizing. All condiments were left out of the orders. Buffalo wings had no blue cheese dressing, or any dressing for that matter! The Fish tacos had no southwestern dressing, and a few dry pieces of corn and beans. A side of spinach had been requested to be substituted for the fries, a pile of cold soggy fries were thrown on top of the tacos, very obvious they were not fresh. The calamari at least had the proper sauce, but were alas, cold and soggy. Again, we live blocks away and were there to pick up the order immediately after placing it. It seems there is a lack of concern or respect for anyone other than those who want to hang around the bar crowd and smoke. Service is usually just ok when we are there, take out is out of the question. I guess all we can say is Bye Ben's it's been only ok knowing you. We will most likely not be back.

Pros: Parking

Cons: Heavy Smoking, not attentive to orders

Unfortunately, though the food was really good, their ventilation system does not remove smoke well at all! Thus the "non-smoking" room might as well be smoking, since the door is open to the bar area where smoking is obviously a big draw. I had called in advance to be sure we'd be able to avoid smoke, and was told we'd be in a separate room, "with the doors closed." On the day of our visit, I received a call to alert me that Tuesday is Trivia Night, and it would be busy (service might be a bit slow). Again, I questioned the smoke issue, and was once again assured the doors would be closed. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! the manager's response to my complaint was a sullen shrug of his shoulders, with the response that he was "sorry" but that he couldn't close the door, since people would be in and out of the dining room all night. He even intimated that it was against the law??? Since my friends were not as bothered by the smoke as I was, we stayed for dinner. As I said at the beginning, the food was good, and the service was decent. HOWEVER, I'm still trying to clear the burning from my eyes, and it's been two hours since I left the place.

I have been a regular at Ben's since it opened at the beginning of 2007. Don't get me wrong the food is always good, especially the quesidillias, steak, and just about everything else. One of my complaints is that the service has gone downhill since two of their head waiters have either left or been fired. These guys knew our names and treated us like one of the guys. The wait staff now is very inexperienced and impersonal. On top of that, there is no ventilation system whatsoever. You would think for a smoking restaurant they would at least prepare for this problem. I am a smoker myself and find the smoking situation appalling, especially on Tuesday night trivia. The owner's girlfriend/wife/whatever needs to stay home and never return. She's always in a bad mood and does nothing but stand around with a disingenuous look on her face smoking ciggies and looking over everyone's shoulder like were about to steal something. If Ben's not careful his girlfriend/wife will run this place into the ground by the end of 2008. I hope this isn't the case because the FOOD is DELICIOUS!! Oh by the way, Why do you keep on booking Bobby "clear 'em out" Hinton on weekends. Have you not noticed before he starts to play there is a full house of people in the restaurant....fast foward to an hour later and the place is empty!! He is probably the worst musical act on the face of the planet. Everytime we go out for a couple of drinks we have to leave immediately because his music is unbearable. Even the wait staff gets PO'd when he's set to perform because all of their tables leave. It's time to put Bobby "clear 'em out" Hinton to bed! Wise up BEN.

Pros: food, outside patio

Cons: owner's girlfriend/wife, smoking-no ventilation

Excellent food and service. The wait staff was very attentive-- never had to ask for a drink. I really like the menu selection- good for groups that want different things. Some of us ordered the fancier entrees and others ordered sandwiches and fish tacos off the pub menu. Best steak I've had in awhile. This place is a great alternative to downtown. It can get very crowded on weekends but they take reservations. The crowd is diverse- good mix of age groups and types. I always meet new people- everyone is very friendly.

Ben's place has good food and the bartenders are great, very friendly and attentive. The crowd is rather unique , there is a large diversity of people in there at any one time. Overall and good place to go.

A few co-workers and I went to Ben's Place for the first time. There were 6 of us and I was surprised that for a Friday night at 5:30, the place was still relatively empty. The hostess struggled to put two tables together for us, while a group of waiters looked on. One of us actually had to help push the tables together.

Meanwhile, once the wait staff actually started working, it was spotty to say the least. Some of us would get our drinks a few minutes after we ordered, while a couple of us did not receive our requested drinks until we were ready to leave. At no point during the night was the restaurant packed and as a former waitress myself, I could not understand the delays in service.

The food itself is nothing to write home about, it's dressed up pub food. It may be tasty, but it's not worth the wait. Plus, one women's bathroom made it an extremely awkward situation (another female co-worker and myself practically had to race other patrons in order to get in).

I'll keep to places like Tir Na Nog and Manchester's for a relaxing after work experience.

I have gone several times and admit the food is good......would enjoy more if it wasn't so smokey. The dinner menu and the crowd it attracts don't coincide. Is it trying to be a smoke filled sports bar or an upscale restaurant? Who wants to go and eat a $ 15 entree when you have people puffing away at the next booth watching Nascar. Decide on the crowd you wish to attract and adjust your menu accordingly. You have the opportunity to be a great addition to our neighborhood, but unfortunately I don't see you lasting very long. Hope you don't wind up like Darryl's or Houlihan's.

I've been twice, and I've enjoyed it both times. The fish tacos are outstanding, the pork tenderloin is delicious (and the portion is huge), the grouper is divine. We have a supper club that meets once a month, and everyone enjoyed his meal the night we went. The food is really good and reasonably priced. We've recommended it to several friends.

Use to go there alot. good food. waitstaff pretty good unless very crowded. Agree with previous review about the "regulars" Not all but some are jerks. Use to do trivia there on tuesdays but they get po'd if someone other than them win and they make rude comments. Haven't gone back in over a month because of them. Pick up a book and read instead of drinking at the bar 3-4 nights a week.

Very good food and waitstaff . Smokey yes, but they have a non smoking room which isn't too bad which is where we go. Would get a 5 except for some ass@*les who are "regulars" there. Bunch of jerk-offs who ruined it for a bunch of people who used to go and found out they were right when we went there.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in the door is cigarette odor. I know there is a non-smoking room, but if you want to hear music you are forced into the smoking area. One time I was told one side of the bar was non-smoking and then the next visit it isn't. I have friends who refuse to go to Ben's because of the second hand smoke and heavy cigarette odor. Both the owner's smoke, so I doubt it will ever go non-smoking. Could be a much nicer place without the smoking!!!

My husband and I attempted to eat at Ben's Place on a weekday evening. We were "greeted" by a hostess who seemed more concerned with completing a homework assignment than seating us. Books and notes were obviously displayed on the reception counter. Hostess could not answer the simple question of how long the wait would be without leaving her station. After 2-3 minutes of waiting for her to return we left. Food could be good, but customer service was poor.

The restaurant bills itself (on this site) as vegetarian. Uninspired salads and cheese fries (without the bacon!) don't make a restaurant vegetarian. Perhaps putting something simple, like sweet potato ravioli alfredo, or roasted vegetable pasta primavera, or grilled tofu on the menu would make the 'vegetarian' label a little more legitimate. The beer selection is decent but the woman walking around is irritating. She interrupted the conversations at our table to obnoxiously welcome us to the restaurant - she needs to work on her timing. Overall, because I only had a salad and cheese fries, I can say the food is just ok. My dinner companions weren't overly impressed, either. The atmosphere is ok. The beer selection is good but nothing to make me overlook the flaws.

Ben's is a GREAT neighborhood bar, but their new bartenders are lacking people skills. Why don't you have your GREAT bartenders, Leslie and Rusty, bartend on trivia night. They are a part of the regular clientele that has been built up at Ben's Place. I love this bar, but if the bar service doesn't get better i will have to spend my time somewhere else.

I have had the pleasure of sampleing just about every item on the menu. And it is all excellent. My favorite is the coffee crusted filet. I am a beef "purist" when it comes to steak. So I was a little sceptical....until I tried it. There were so many layers of flavor I almost went into shock! And the herb chicken is my second favorite. I mean, fish tacos (more like burritos) made with Mahi...enough said. Hats off to chef Dan and chef Elliot. The food , in my opinion , is better than several of the more upscale places in Raleigh.
Then there is Ben and Mary Ann. They always try to greet or talk to as many customers as possible, no matter how busy. And they are very commited to ensuring that customers have a pleasurable dinning experience.
I have read the other reviews, and it looks like , everyone else really liked the place, with one exception. Sounds like she had issues before she got there.......one in every crowd.

I first came upon Ben's Place for a birthday gathering. It has a warm family pub-esk atmosphere, a large patio area, well-lit parking, friendly servers, fantastic food and it's clean. Ben's Place is a family-run business with their focus on complete customer satisfaction. Just what I have been looking for, I am happy to report. At this birthday gathering people boasted about every item ordered. I had the tuna which was excellent and the portions are good for the value, the quesadillas were very popular as were the hamburger and the grouper dish. Party of 18 and separate checks? No problem. Party of 18+ with added gratiuty? Not done.
I had the grouper entree last night ? Wednesday night is 20% off Main dishes night and certain beverages as told by our server Sandy, and my friend had the Salmon (custom ordered topping ? just ask your server ? they would probably prepare anything to your liking). My friend and I had a fabulous time, met some interesting and fun people, wined and dined at a reasonable price. What could be better? Thank you to Sandy for making our patio dining experience a pleasant one. We will be back on Wednesday nights and hopefully with a crowd! Great place. Go!

My spouse and I have had some great meals at Ben's; but we've had some surprisingly bad meals, too. If you're a real carnivore, the beef is great. However, if you're looking at the lighter fare - beware! The salads - which you would think would be a pretty difficult thing to do poorly - are not worth ordering. Limp lettuce; not very good dressings. Fish is also pretty great, too (except for the fish and chips which were bland and greasy). The (broiled) fish tacos are the best!

Overall, we love Ben's Place but it is very loud and not at all a place to go if you're looking for a romantic dinner.
