I visit often because i'm never disappointed. The food, great; Service always exceptional and the setting is just the best. It is small and cozy. They have a creative menu that will work for most everyone. Their small plates are great if you just want a night out but don't want to spend much. I just love it!

I have visited J Betski's on 4 separate occasions and each time, the food has been fantastic and the service, exceptional! A small setting with a great bar; interesting wine and beer selections and creative dinner specials make it an culinary adventure each time we go. I love their "small plate" selections as it makes it possible to try more great food without overeating....You can truly tell when owners are dedicated to their business, these people know what they are doing when if comes to german cooking!

My friends and family LOVE J Betski's for their authentic German and Polish food. They serve lunch and dinner and have a pub menu or a table service menu.

Great Food. Everything on menu is incredible. You have to get the pierogies, whatever ones they have on the menu. Wine and beer list is pretty good. Staff was great as well. The place is pretty small, which makes for a cozy evening, so you may just want to call ahead to make sure they have room.

First time I have been there and it was really great. The food was tasty and very fresh. I tried lots of the pub plates and the appetizers in order to try a wide range of flavors...that was the way to go and was plenty of food. We also tried a few of the German beers and asked questions about the beers and the wait staff didn't seem to know too much about it. The service was pretty slow and it took a while to get drinks, bread, apps, and our pub plates. We were there on a week night so it was not super busy. I wish our waiter had been a little more knowledgeable about the menu and quicker, too!

Wonderful German Draft beers and unique wines highlight a small, but amazingly satisfying selection of entrees. Try the homemade Kielbasas!

We have tried almost everything on the menu... you just can't go wrong. We typically go with 4 to 6 adults and share appetizers. The meals are well proportioned yet we seldom have room for dessert.

Our family tradition calls for the birthday person to choose a restaurant. For the four of us every choice has been Betski's for the past 2 years.

Tried J Betski's with friend who has actually been to Germany - so I relied on him for a bit of help with the menu. We went late at night so there wasn't too much of a crowd - and really just went for a sampling from the menu. Everything we tried was great! The atmosphere was authentic, and the wait staff was very helpful with questions I had regarding menu choices. We'll definitely be going back!

I've tried many of the food dishes here and haven't been disappointed. The flavors really stand out! The pierogies are wonderful as well as the kielbasa. I also really liked the duck confit I tried last time I was in. The chef switches up the menu so there is always something new to try. Now they have some small plate options which is great if you want to try several dishes with your friends. Also, the service here is excellent. I have been several times and the staff is always very helpful describing the menu since some of the items are quite unique to me. I take my friends here who are looking for great food and a welcoming atmosphere and now that we're getting some warmer days you can eat outside!

. Polish Cuisine, you'll like J. Betski's. The service is good, and the food is great. J Betski's is located in a gentrified section of shops and restaurants just north of downtown Raleigh. it serves excellent polish and german food. the pork belly appetizer makes us swoon every time we order it - despite what it does to our waistlines! this is a relatively small restaurant and it's very popular,

Chef/Owner John K is a family member of ours. He had invited us to come and dine for several months. And being of a Southern Heritage, We really had not been exposed to German food before. Finally we decided, Lets give it a try, we really think a lot of John and we should support his new endeavor. So.. A few months ago we called for reservations (after reading the suggestions on the website) and went to dinner with 2 other couples. Our first experience was so wonderful! We love the small atmosphere and the wait staff was excellent. We did not realize how delicious this cousine was! Since then we have made this one of our favorite places to dine. My husband loves the Hanger Steak dish and I love the Pork Schnitzel w/Dill Cucumber Salad & New Potatoes. As a matter of fact we will be dining at J Betskis tonight . We are very proud of John and his accomplishment and I would say to anyone who has not tried it . Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a delicious meal and wonderful glass of German wine!! And as a special treat after dinner try the Blueberry Dumpling its Fabulous!!

My husband and I had plans to go to another restaurant, but found that a private party had it booked and J. Betski's was the alternative. Boy am I glad! Being of mostly German heritage, I have tasted a wide variety of heartburn inducing sausages and saurkraut to last me the rest of my life. This is where JB's differes. They have a variety of foods that do not just have sausage, in fact a friend who came with us in vegetarian and he found a variety of foods to eat while there. There was a lag in between the apps course and the main course, but that may be attributed to the fact that one of us got two apps as the main course and the timing was all off. In any case, the rest of the service was excellent and the somapny was great so the time didn't affect our experience all that much. I loved the ambience. It was dressy casual, perfect for coming straight from work (business professional attire). The prices were exactly what you would expect to pay upon entering this type of establishment and the service was friendly. Now, the food? my god!!!!! My husband and I could not stop gushing over how good it was! I loved it! I had the stuffed chicken and my husband had the pork chops, whew, it fills you up, but you want to keep eating it because it tastes so good. It was a Tuesday night, so you wouldn't expect for it to be too busy, well during the dinner rush it was packed. All in all a very enjoyable experience.

You DO need to make reservations on Fri/Sat night. It's such a small place and was completely packed. I was a bit concerned about some of the reviewers' experiences here. My (half-German) wife had eaten here a couple weeks before and said she thought it was great. I've been to Germany several times, so I was eager to try this place out.

We were greeted by two friendly hostesses when we arrived for our reservation at 6pm. After being immediately seated, the waiter promptly arrived and took drink orders and went over the specials. I love weissbier, so I ordered the Schneider Weisse on tap, which was very good (for weissbier). I ordered one of the specials-- smoked thick pork chop. My wife ordered a vegetable plate (off menu). She's a vegetarian, and they were more than happy to hook her up-- sauteed mushrooms, beets, a veg casserole that was made that day, potatoes, onions, and asparagus.

Our meals arrived at 6:24.... so-- Seated at 6:00...drinks arrived and meals ordered at 6:10. Meals arrived 14 minutes later. I'd say that was pretty fast! I also noted that the couples on both sides of us got their food in the same amount of time.

The smoked pork chop was about 1" thick and was cooked well. The sweet onion gravy was excellent. I noted that one was delivered to each of the two tables beside us. Excellent dish.

As for dessert... I have to partially agree with another reviewer here about our two desserts. I had the Erbeertorte (Strawberry torte) and my wife had the Bittersweet Chocolate Cherry Cake. Both were pretty dry. (Neither was too salty though, as mentioned in another review.) I have to note that this type of dessert is VERY authenticate to eastern europe. I also found some odd strawberry "pectin-y" chunks in mine, about the consistency of a gummy bear. We'll skip dessert next time.

I highly recommend the homemade lemoncello. Very nice digestive.

I should also note that our waiter was VERY friendly and helpful.

I brought my family to J. Betski's to impress them with the wonderful beer and wine list, rich cuisine and fantastic service. My family and I were seated on the patio and from there it was down hill. Our server took far too long to bring us our drinks and take our orders. He was quite shmarmy. We enjoyed a few drinks and diner salads, and then we waited, and waited, and waited. The restaurant was by no means crowded and my family and I were patient until we noticed that everyone around us, that had been seated later than we had, were munching on their meals. I politely signaled our server, who seemed to be avoiding us, and politely asked if there was a problem with our meals as we had been waiting quite awhile. Instead of receiving an apology or polite response I was met with "Well, some things take longer than others...". It had been about an hour. We then continued to wait for about twenty more minutes, time that went by, much like the hour before, with no communication from our server. My aunt, a service industry veteran had had enough, she flagged down our server and said that we had been waiting quite awhile for our food. His response, "Yes, an hour". That was the last straw, my aunt told him to bring us our check and to forget about dinner. The manager came over to try and smooth over the situation by offering us some desserts on the house. We declined citing the rude treatment we had received along with a complete lack of concern. He said "ok". Then the chef came out and offered to wrap up our food to go. My aunt declined. The chef then got rather heated and stated several times "Well, I don't understand what the problem is". Here is the problem, I understand that sometimes things happen and food can take a while to prepare, but such things much be communicated to the customer that has no idea what is going on in the kitchen and only sees table after table receiving their food. Most problems can be fixed with some simple communication.

Cons: service!

I brought my wife here for her birthday, and all I can say is wow! I had the beet salad, chicken, and chocolate cake for desert. She had the fish and stuedel, and an appetizer I can't recall. We were both blown away by all of the dishes. The service was attentive without being annoying. We went on a monday, it was a quiet pleasant atmosphere.

I wouldn't change a thing! Well, maybe lower prices so we could go more often ;)

The place was small, and the service was great. However, $8 for one bratwurst on the appetizer menu? What? The bratwurst was mediocre and tiny, the chicken we ordered was horrible. Too greasy, nothing special at all. Way Way overpriced for the quality of food that was served. If I didn't have a gift certificate I would have been livid.

I have been here quite a few times, and have really enjoyed myself in the past. I am going to review my most recent affair at j-betskis. Excellent bar-tending with prompt friendly service. The room itself is quite small, and they really pack them in! Salads have been the same, it seems since they opened almost 2 years ago. I had the Bibb salad which was ok. Sausages were great as usual! For entrees I had the hanger steak special (stroganoff sauce was little too acidic) and my wife had the fried cod. Sauteed spinach on both plates was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. Steak was an excellent medium rare and the cod was crunchy on the outside and still very moist on the inside.! Excellent! Now for the deserts.... Do yourself a favor and stay away from them, they are consistently dry, boozy, or salty? I really think they need a new pastry chef. I ordered the quark strudel and my wife the cheery cake. Quark strudel was seasoned with salt instead of sugar i presume, and the cherry cake was boozy and dry. They replaced my strudel with the bread pudding which was a far fetch from any bread pudding I've ever had. Extremely dry and cold in the middle.

Cons: poor quality deserts, not very kid friendly (people with crying kids got many dirty looks from the staff)

.

The food here is good, sure, but for the price there are other, better venues to eat at. The whole place has a snobbish new age vibe I didn't enjoy and the staff was downright rude. I'm still looking for an authentic eastern European restaurant in the Raleigh area because sadly, this isn't it.

I simply can't reccomend Betski's highly enough. I've eaten there three times, and each experience was better than the last. Homemade sausage, dazzling wines (a Hungarian Tokay!), and a seasonal menu that's both fufilling and surprising. Whenever I've brought friends from Dallas or NYC here, they exclaim, "I didn't know you had food like this in Raleigh!" If you like true, slow-cooked, passionately crafted food, you owe yourself a trip to this gem.

Pros: Impeccable food, gracious service

Cons: Not a place for kids, but come on, you owe yourself a romantic night out!

.

I had almost completely written off "cuisine" in Raleigh. There were 2 or 3 places I truly enjoyed eating. Then I went to Betski's. Fantastic. The menu is exceptional and changes seasonally with local products and sausages made in house. You can seriously taste the love. The beer, wine, and spirits can be perfectly matched to the menu. If in doubt, ask the staff. They are always knowledgable, polite, and helpful.

The prices are exactly in line with the food. People who are not true foodies might balk at the prices, but considering the quality of the food, the fact that they do support local farms, and the presentation of the food and dining areas, you are paying for what you get. Also, as this is an upscale establishment, do not expect a plate overflowing with food. They serve perfect portions. Remember: you are paying for the entree, NOT the sides.

A word of warning: Don't fall too much in love with a particular dish. Because the menu changes seasonally, it may not be available on your next visit. If you catch the season, though, try the cabbage rolls. They are the most perfect food created. Or the duck. I hate duck, but Betski's manages to prepare it in a manner that does not leave a plate of grease and really showcases the natural flavor of the fowl. Or anything, really. I have now eaten there 4 or 5 times and every time I try a new dish and it is perfection.

Be sure to save room for the homemade limoncello (just don't expect to drive afterwards) as dessert. It will knock your socks off and leave you nice and warm.

So head to J Betski's with a full wallet and an empty stomach and you will not be disappointed. Just remember to savor your food. Eat slowly. Enjoy a drink and remember that this is what the finer things in life are like.

My friends and I pick a new ethnic restaurant ever month and give it a try. We ended up at J. Betski's for some yummy German food! My family is German and I've had true German food. I have to say the schnitzel was right in line with what I remember grandma cookin'. I had a sampling of the other dishes as well and it was more like German fusion (a little bit of German mixed with French) than true German. The menu isn't as extensive as I would've liked. The prices are extremely high! The beer selection is great! The desserts were great! DO NOT bring your children! One of my friend's brought her 6 year old son. They do not have a kid's menu, so she just ordered him a chicken breast with some potatoes. A $15 chicken breast with potatoes and no surprise toy included. Yikes! The waiter would not separate our check. The restaurant was very crowded and noisy. With reservations, we waited about an extra 20 minutes for our very cramped table for 7. I think I'd go back with a party of 2 to try it once more, but it's not good at all for group dining.

Pros: Great schnitzel! Yummy desserts. Extensive beer selection.

Cons: PRICE! German fusion instead of true German, noisy, crowded, not kid friendly, not group friendly

I had dinner last night with a friend and the whole experience was exceptional. The restaurant is a bit small, but that?s what I loved about it. It felt relaxed and comfortable, and the candlelit tables provided a romantic atmosphere.

For starters, the service was outstanding. Our server was highly professional and attentive. I was truly impressed by his detailed knowledge of the beers and food we questioned him about.

The food was what I was anticipating. I?m of Polish descent, so was anxious to try some select items with discriminating taste buds. It absolutely surpassed my expectations. The fresh kielbasa and pierogies were DELICIOUS. I think if my family had served food like this at one of the holiday gatherings of years past, the whole crowd would have stated a collective ?WOW?! For entrees my friend and I had the pork schnitzel and the scallops, both of which were fantastic.

If you?re thinking of giving this place a try, don?t hesitate. GO. It?s an absolute jewel within the Raleigh restaurant scene!

This place rocks!! The food is amazing, and the service is perfect. One of the best beer lists in Raleigh, and extremely friendly service. I had dinner tonight here with some friends. The whole experience was mind-blowing. I have not had food this good anywhere in NC. Try one of the house made sausages or perogies for an appetizer. Be ready to eat. You will not leave hungry!

Let's hope it doesn't stay a secret for long. The food is impeccable, the service is outstanding. Start a dialogue with your server about the menu! My recommendation: the potato salad with beets and anchovies. I know it sounds odd, but it's the best thing I've tasted in years. Treat yourself to something new!

Pros: Awesome service.

Cons: I wish the bar were longer!

I went to eat there earlier in the evening. I would go again but later in the evening. They do serve additional specials that aren't on the menu. I had the mussels with bratwurst and lemon butter A+. They make their own sausage also. The Shnietzel was great, nice portions. I had the Ice Cream Sandwich for dessert, it wasn't that great. Get the Mocha Torte.

What a wonderful new and different offering for the Raleigh restaurant scene! Our 2 experiences have been outstanding - once enjoying a meal in the dining area and the second drinks and "snacks" in the bar. The pork schnitzel dish is wonderful. And the crab, mushroom saurkraut pierogi with a lemon brown butter is amazing. Don't miss trying these!

There is a three letter word for this place: WOW. I lived in Germany for 3 years and I felt as if I was back in Karlsfeld (a small town outside of Munich). The food knocked my socks right off. But we will get to that later. I love the location of this place. You feel as if you are some sort of elite member in a trendy tucked away tavern. No one knows about this place, yet it is always busy. I love the traffic of people it draws to its illuminated interior. The interior is snug but cozey. This isn't a place you want any bigger, it is just perfect. The service is prompt and I have had the same waiter the 2 times I have had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant. Well knowledged, proper attire with their surroundings, and very corteous. Please do yourself a favor and go. Take your loved one, whether romantic or even just a friend and spoil yourselves. You will walk out satisfied, I promise. It definitely is romantic, but also a great place to grab a drink and exchange terrific conversation.
The menu is simple, elegant, and AUTHENTIC! My mouth was watering when they presented my plate at dinner. I mean for a split second I wanted to attack my dish. The scents of the past tantalized my senses and it felt great to eat again. This place may weigh much personal bearing on me, but try it and see. I had the pork schnitzel that was to die for. Honestly if I was facing the chair in the next few months I would consider it as my final entree (No disrespect mom... you know you'd win). it was complimented with fresh kartoffel salat (If you don't know what that is then go find out....), fresh cranberry jelly, and cucumber in yogurt. Honestly, hang on to your seat after the first bite...and try not to ravage the plate. I am makeing it my personal quest to try ALL the entrees they offer. I have had the schnitzel and the flounder (I do not have the space or time to rampage your mind with that one....but oh my God it is gooooood).
Trust me, take the chance and go fall in love.

I was pleasantly surprised when I showed up and there was a packed bar and a packed house. I asked for a apetizer and beer menu while waiting and much to my suprise found one of the best selections of traditional german, polish, czech, and russian beers on tap and in the bottle. I ordered the ever so rare Okocim (a Polish Baltic Porter) while the wife had a Schneider Weiss from the tap. We settled our bar tab with the bartender before setting down and said "well if your food's half as good as your beer selection, I suppose we're in for a treat"... at which the bartender replied "trust me, the food's twice as good!" And it definitely was! Traditional Polish Red Borscht (a bit sweeter for the American pallette though) was followed by excellent mushroom and garlic perogies. The duck with beets and red cabbage was to die for and the duck, white bean, and sausage stew was tremendous. We'll be going back ASAP and will get reservations this time (its a bit small, so, if you have a group more than 4, call ahead!)

J Betski's is probably one of the most interest *new* restaurants in one Raleigh up and coming districts - a district not too far removed from Manhattan's meat packing district. Food was excellent, our waiter in particular was helpful and knowledgeable. An ability to match up the appropriate German brew or vine is something I always appreciate.

This is certain a restaurant I would bring out-of-town customers too and I wish them every success.

We will definitely be back!
