We adopted a puppy from this shelter 6 weeks ago and were told she was 8 weeks old, however, after taking her to the vet recommended by the staff we were informed that she was only 5 weeks old and was too young for adoption. After numerous trips to the vet with conditions ranging from worms to distemper, we watched our puppy wither away and suffer because of the poor conditions at this facility. Although we support rescuing animals, we do not support inhumane high-kill shelters such as this one that are kept in such a deplorable state. No one at the veterinarian's office was surprised to hear that she had come from this shelter, but that she was the sickest they had seen in some time. Today after our puppy was laid to rest, we were advised to steer clear of animal shelters in this area and deal only with reputable breeders. RIP Gabrielle

The shelter was very friendly and the process was rather easy. The 5 year lab is perfect for our family and was given a great bill of health, and well maintained. thank you so much for your time

When my friend and I first walked into the building we couldnt wait to see what the shelter had to offer. The facility was satisfatory and clean. The Staff seemed welcoming and directed us where we needed to go. The staff helped us pick a dog to see. We fell in love instantly with him. We went back the next day to the shelter to adopt the dog from the previous day. The staff helped us handle the buisness side of this as far as adoption. But, the day before we asked how much it would be to adopt the dog. We where told a price based on the dog being neutered, which the staff said he was. When we went the next day we brought only what we needed to pay for him. But when were where almost done and about to pay, the staff changed the price they told us. They said the dog was in fact not neutered when the day before they said he was. This made us upset but we still adopted him anyway. Just make sure you check everything out for sure aka neutered, spayed or not. It would have saved us a lot of grief if we did the checking our selves and not relied on the staff.

I was working down in Jacksonville several weeks ago and found a dog running around in traffic. I stopped to pick him up and took him to Onslow County Animal Control. I do not live in Jacksonville and did not know what else to do with him. He was held for his owners, but no one came for him. Then he was put up for adoption. I adopted him the week he went up for adoption. The staff was very helpful, they even took the dog from me when they were not yet open for business the day I found him. His name is now Jax and is an awesome dog! I encourage everyone in Onslow County to go to the Shelter and Adopt!!! You can find an awesome dog like Jax there that will add a lot of happiness to your life! Please remember to spay and neuter your pets!

We recently adopted a dog from the Onslow County Animal Control. "Sampson" which we now call Sammy has been a wonderful addition to our family. He has completed our family, and it was an experience in which we knew we were meant for each other. I wish we could thank the volunteer who helped us and told us what a great dog he was.
Our experience with Onslow County Animal Control was positive. The staff was nice and the volunteers are AWESOME! The price to adopt Sammy was $95.00 which included a voucher to neuter him. He was up to date on shots from his previous owner. I found the shelter to be clean and sanitary.
While Sammy had kennel cough and an URI when we adopted him, we were more than happy to accept that for him to join our family. Our family vet could not believe how smart Sammy was, and mentioned what a great search and rescue dog he could be if properly trained.
The only negative I can find with the shelter is it is a kill shelter. I wish Onslow County would find funding to provide a no kill shelter, and allow so many animals second chances. I wish enough people would petition for a change so these poor animals who cannot defend themselves or prevent those not responsible enough to have pets from simply dropping them off to meet their death, can have a second chance. I wish enough people would become offended and demand Onslow County to reform their views on Animal Control. Animals are lives, they breathe and have feelings just like humans. Animals deserve to live and not pay for other's ignorance or lack of ability to take care of them. Animals cannot take care of themselves or feed themselves, they depend on humans to do so. Animals are not a pair of shoes that can simply be thrown away, when they "no longer fit" or become a burden. We don't do it to our children, so why do we do it to animals?

A month ago I got a cute little white fluffy dog/maltese from the Onslow County Animal Control. He is very cute and healthy and very loving and a dear sweetheart. It cost $98 and in that cost he got a rabies shot, a parvo shot and a voucher to be neutered.
If you have taken your animal to the vet lately, as you should, you would know that $98 (shots and neutering) is very cheap. I just got a quote for neutering this dog (surgery alone), without the voucher from the pound, would be $210, not including the pain meds, initial visit and so on! So, the price to get an animal from the pound is VERY CHEAP! Plus, they do allow a return within so many days.

I have had no health problems with him. I have no idea how such a nice dog ended up there. It is sad that so many dogs and cats get put down due to irresponsible owners, and people not going there to adopt. If you keep looking at petharbor.com, you will find the dog or cat of your dreams.

Go ahead go to the pound and save an animal. It is heart breaking because you can't save them all, but, you can save one. Make a difference. Save one! Just 1!

I want to thank all the people at the Onlow County Animal Shelter for a very gratifying visit and adoption. From the moment that I and my wife walked through the front door, workers were fiendly, courteous, helpful and knowledgable. We had just lost our chocolate lab (Dixie) that we had for almost seven years. We were heartbroken and went to the shelter to pacify friends. It was the best thing we could have done. They introduced us to a chocolate lab that we named Trixie, she showed us some tricks from day one. The vet examined her and found her healthy. i don't think we could find a more loving animal. I thank all the worker for their time and assistance.

The WORST experience ever! I live in Onslow County and went to the shelter an adopted a puupy we named Katie. Katie was 110 dollars and while she did come with a slip to get her fixed she never made it that far. We didnt have her 24 hours when she was having bloody stools. I took her in to the emergency vet clinic on a sunday and they had to put her to sleep. It broke my heart. The vet there told me that 97% of the pets that come from there are sick. I believe that, because on Monday I went to the shelter to inform them and two couples behind me also were there to inform them that their dogs had died with in 48hrs.Come to find out they dont have a vet there and they are never checked out. I should have done my research, but instead i felt sorry for her and took her home that day. Beside the heart break its a huge finacial risk. Not only to you pay for the pet and their shots, but you have to pay to have them fixed. We had to put Katie down and it was 250 dollars. Just beware. I thought I was doing such a good thing...turns out i wasnt. I feel babd to say not to adopt the pets because i dont want them to be put to sleep, but if they are sick they would be better off. I pait to put Katie to sleep because if Id have taken her back there on Monday she would have suffered until Friday when they put the dogs down. Maybe if everyone stops adopting from there, they'll change their ways and get a vet on staff.
