Hotel Charlotte offers the kind of charm that few restaurants in town can match. The place is a veteran of the restaurant scene and has a little wear around the edges, but it's a comforable place to enjoy good food with family and friends. The service staff is very friendly and there's a new chef. He offered crabcakes as a special the last time I was there and today he served homemade chicken and dumplings with sides of collard greens and mac and cheese. This was the kind of food my grandmother made and it was all very authentic-right down to the fresh made biscuit. I'm happy to have rediscovered this restaurant after not going for years and finding that the food is better than I remember, but everything else is just the same. That's what gives the place so much charm.

Pros: The best crabcake I've ever eaten

Cons: Specials are very popular and can sell out

Hotel Charlotte impressed, being refreshingly "local" and incredibly friendly. My date and I split a marvelous Ahi-tuna salad and some very delicious baked oysters,we drank belgian beers and had the best prime rib I have had in years.Service was impeccable, the Valentine's decor fun. This restaurant was a great find for this displaced Floridian,we left satiated and happy.

Well had I not had a $25 gift card I would have never been able to experience this place. 99 Beers is a good start but about it on a Thursday night. Food> I started with the "OYSTERS ROYAL" which in it's name invokes a somewhat royal dish. While the menu describes the dish as "lightly battered & fried - topped with crumbled bacon & hollandaise" I received 6 nicley fried oysters of decent size, sprinkled with bacons pieces (real bacon no less) but not even a complete teaspoon of the hollandaise. And it appeared to be some sort of remoulade sauce anyway as if to say the chef did not want to or had not prepared the hollandaise.

Ishould have ordered the Jumbo Gumbo but had a real hunger for some Low Country Shrimp & Grits. Their menu states "gulf shrimp sauteed with butter and garlic on a bed of stone ground cheddar cheese grits ladled with a tasso cream sauce" Better described as "A nice bowl of cool not hot cheese grits covered with a handful of frozen Contessa shrimp that are warmed in a pan with a stick of butter and a spoonful of garlic powder then topped with 2 spoonsful of cheddar cheese & parm that are right of the refrg, to give a nice cool topping to your dish. After this we will NOT put any amount of Tasso Cream Sauce on your shrimp so as to not add ANY AMOUNT of taste to the dish and ruin your perfectly cold meal!

Now with that said I give props to a wonderful bowl of She Crab Soup, a Nicely done Prime Rib and some tremendous smashed potato's !

I should have had the JUMBO GUMBO and the chef should not do SHRIMP & GRITS ANYMORE unless of course he does them RIGHT! Put some DANG BACON & Grease in them for Pete's sake!

There are fewer and fewer owner/family run "mom and pop joints" left. These places are where you really get the very best food, atmosphere, and service. It is because the owners are there usually all the time and their life saving and income are from the food and service the clients get. It is where you get the real sincere and heartly ment "how are you doing and welcome back" attitudes. The servers are usually much better than what you normally get even in a upper end chain. The chains are killing these great American places and we need to get back in support of the backbone of American bistros. I have been coming to Hotel Charlotte since 1984 and would rather eat here than at Mortons, Nobles or whatever other tilt your nose back over rated by high end ad agencies advise us on. This is a great place to entertain formally or casually. I have not had all the entrees but what I have ordered was wondeful and made to order. Another place of this type is Amalfi Harbor Restaurant in Greensboro - no finer northern Italian place in the south. Try it out and it also will become "home" to you as Hotel Charlotte is to me when I come to Charlotte several times a month on business. Intro yourself to Steve the owner and he will make your lunch or dinner fun. This is also a wonderful place for drinks with friends late night or watching a game during the day. You can even keep your own beer stein there which is etched with your nickname and special quick story - they are fun to read going back to the restrooms :) Keep smiling and GO HERE !!

Pros: Great food - great value - FUN

Cons: No rooms - it really is not a hotel

I was introduced to Hotel Charlotte by some fellow pilots at US Airways. I spent a lot of time in CLT doing training. I love the beer list, wearing their tee shirt right now, and was working on my mug(100 beers). I fell in love with the gumbo and ordered it as jumbo gumbo which is a full meal. Ask for a half dozen oysters to be included. Cajun lovers, you will love this.

Pros: Great food and wonderful beers....

Cons: Bar crowd gets a bit noisy due to the overall size of the restaurant.

If you get a sense that Hotel Charlotte is filled with "regulars" you're probably right. Built 25 years ago and fitted out with fixtures rescued from Charlotte's demolished grand hotel (hence the name) this restaurant has been attracting neighbors from as far away as Atlanta for a long time. The menu has a New Orleans tilt and still offers the best gumbo around. But there are plenty of nawthern flavors, too. Most of the waitstaff has been there for at least five years and it shows. They know what they're doing and you should ask their advice. If the kitchen is missing a beat or a menu item isn't to their liking they'll tell you and steer you to the best choice. The seafood specials are usually a good bet, the prime rib is a very good deal, and they have among the best prices on wine you'll find anywhere, or choose from among 99 beers. Vegatables (unless you count red beans and rice) are not a strong suit, nor are salads. Desserts are very good, especially the bread pudding. Sunday brunch is a new venture and the food is excellent but it can be crowded. No reservations and you may have a wait but the bar is always welcoming escpecially if you;re willing to introduce yourself to your bartneder - so they'll know your name next time.

Pros: As anti-chain as a restaurant can feel these days

Cons: Can be uneven (see pro's) ask your server's advice

Friends told us about the place and we were not dissapointed . We were greated very warmly by the host who seemed to know everyone in the place. Could not believe the list of beers and wines. Yes, I started the beer club. The service was outstanding and the food wonderful. If you have just gotten to Charlotte, you must find this place and have a great time

Hotel Charlotte is a great neighborhood restaurant. The staff is friendly & food is great. They have a nice bar with over 100 beers & a ample wine list. Wine tastings they give here often are great - good food - nice pours & nice price! Ignor the 2 previous comments from the smoke police. They are trying to pass a law against smoking in restaurants & using this as a forum - the smoke is not bad. Fern282 gave a bad review to every restaurant - see profile. Big Harry - you are an amateur diner - only rookies go out on VT day. Never judge a restaurant on VT day, Mother's day or New Years eve. The 3 cheese ravioli is one of my favorites try it topped with a chicken breast. Don't miss the Cajun dishes. Seafood is fresh from the coast. Specials are a pleasant surprise (meatloaf if you're lucky). I have been going there regularly for over 10 years & my food is always delicious. They have a loyal crowd. As a Charlotte Native I have dined at over 100 restaurants in the area - there is a reson I keep coming back to this one. Don't miss it!

Hoping to find a little ambience for our Valentine break, we were hugely dissapointed by the noise, smoke, and crowding. This definitely is not a plce for lovers unless you like the bar scene and lots of cigarette smoke.

Pros: Good Food, Good Service

Cons: No Ambience, Noise, Smoke

.

I know the food is good because I've ordered take-out to eat at home. Hard to tell what the stuff tastes like at the restaurant because the two times I've eaten there, I was engulfed in a cigarette smoke fog.

There is no non-smoking section - and there are A LOT of smokers.
