Despite being overstaffed, the service was poor. Our waiter was friendly but unattentive and we waited too long for everything from the drink order to refills. The food was fantastic though.

My husband and I live in Charlotte and don't normally go as far as Matthews to dine out since there are so many good restaurants in town, but my sister and her husband had received a substantial gift certificate that we thought would be enough to cover the meals of at least 3 of us. Everything was so pricey, however, that it only covered the price of 2 meals. The food was very good, especially the roasted sweet potatoes and beets, which I think were local. I'm giving the experience 3 stars because the food was overall good. The experience wasn't as relaxing as you would expect dining at this price level should be.

When we arrived there was a sign on the front door saying there was a private party in progress and it instructed us to go to the enclosed patio around back. We weren't allowed to use the front entrance even though the building was very long front to back and it wasn't clear how we were supposed to get to the back of the building. It wasn't very well lit on either side and it was difficult in the dark trying to find the back entrance. 3 of us ended up walking to the back through a dark side parking lot that belonged to the restaurant next door (with towing signs all over the place). My husband, meanwhile, decided to see if there was a back entrance where he could park - he ended up finding it, but the tiny gravel lot only holds about 6 cars and it was full. He ended up having to park in front where we were before and then had to walk to the back patio. All this took about 15 minutes while we were seated and waiting on him. It was all very odd, and really ridiculous in hindsight because of the inflated prices they charge.

The patio seating area was enclosed with plastic and there were space heaters keeping it warm enough despite the fact it was below freezing outside with the wind blowing. Actually sitting and getting up was difficult however since the wrought iron tables and chairs were squeezed very tightly together and it was hard not to block someone in or bump them.

The waitstaff was very attentive and our waitress apologized for the difficulty in parking when she overheard us talking about it. So, overall I don't regret dining there. It's just that I don't think I'll go out of my way to make the trek there again.

A nice intimate setting in the heart of downtown Matthews. A nice alternative to driving into Charlotte. Menu varies daily. A little pricey, but okay for a treat once in a while.

I cannot recommend this restaurant any more than I already do! My husband and I love to eat here! It's location is so convenient when you don't want to drive all the way into Charlotte for a nice dinner. The chef always has unique specials, things you won't find anywhere else. We love the atmosphere; it's intimate enough for a dinner for 2 or cozy enough for dinner with your family. I think the entrees are reasonably priced for the amount and quality of food you get. It definitely gets 5 stars in my book!

Party of 6 with reservations - very tight tables in very small room - large one room dining area; Wattress was unattentive -- didn't explain menu/ala-carte etc - didn't ask for drink orders/appetizers-- straight to entree orders. One couple did order bottle of wine but after taking order she didn't ask remaining 2 couples if they wished mixed drink or wine.
I asked her to confirm the "lump crab" description of the crab cakes since I lived on Chesapeake Bay and have had them many times there. However, in other restaurants, outside of sea side locations they are mostly filler and bland. She assured me they were lump crab (although not backfin) so I ordered them. Crab cakes arrived on beautiful finished plate but were perfectly flat / perfectly round shape and blacken on bottom --- should have realized that probably meant machine made. Couldn't find a teaspoon of crab in the filler. After finally getting her attention -- she didn't check back after food delivered -- I showed her mixture spread out on plate. She didn't say "sorry" or offer any apology. As she started to leave, I asked that it be returned to the chef. She asked if I wanted to order something else -- "No". Left with the plate.
One diner had duck --- bland per his description. One diner had salmon -- very small portion and also so thin the flavor was grilled out of it -- very pricey for so little.
Wattress did not return for water refill and at the end of the meal did not ask if we wanted desserts; The dessert table was placed at the end of our long table!! because the room was so small - this was about 8 feet inside the door.
Bill included 20% tip for six which is normal, however, the "comp'd" lump crab cakes also were part of the 20% tip calculation. No apology from the owner who was within sight of the table when she signed off on the "comp'd" entree removing it from out bill.

Bottom line --- much better, cheaper, food and service at many other places in Charlotte.

Pros: nice small room; beautiful plate presentation

Cons: average food, poor service, tight spacing; No owner involvement with problems.

We were driving past and went in on a whim. It's a small, cozy place, very nice ambience. The tin ceiling was a nice touch; the small room give an air of intimacy but was not cramped. They had a nice quiet patio in the back. We were surprised to be greeted at the door by the owners' young daughter. She was nonplussed by the fact that we didn't have reservations, but manage to gather herself and promptly got us a nice spot. The service was excellent. Our server was inquiring but not smothering. The she-crab soup was good, subtle and sweet. I had the pork chop with sausage grits. Very good - nicely grilled. The grits were not too strong. The fresh vegetables were excellent. My table-mate had the striped sea bass with gnocchi. The fish was subtle, which was underwhelming at first, but by the end of the meal was good - a lot of restaurants have strong flavored foods that taste good with the first bite, but are way too rich by the time you finish the entree. We didn't save room for dessert. Overall an excellent experience. I think the location helped - it could easily be Uptown or in South Park or somewhere else trendy, but by being in Matthews, it's cozy and unpretentious. We'll definitely be there again.
