I took my 7 year old daughter for her first horseback ride at Painted Sunset Farm. James was great with her and took us on a wonderful ride around the farm. She is already asking when we can go back again!

I took my 11 year old niece to Painted Sunset farms for trail riding today and it was a wonderful experience!

When we first arrived at the farm, James invited us to look at some recently born foals while he saddled up our horses. They were adorable.

James was very polite, patient, and personable. He asked of our riding experience to gage our skill level (not very experienced) and from that point he taught us the important things we needed for a safe and enjoyable ride. Throughout the ride he politely and calmly reminded us of the proper techniques. The horses were well groomed and very well behaved.

As for the trails, they were through the woods and in open fields, providing a nice balance of sun and shade -- much appreciated on a hot July day.

I have nothing but positive things to say about our experience today and about James. I would highly reccommend Painted Sunset farms, and I will definately go there again!

Pros: Personable leader, varied trails, calm horses

I have been riding horses for 20 years, and in that time I have never had such an all around excellent expereince on a trail ride as I did with James at Painted Sunset. He let me go in and play with some brand new foals when I arrived, and the trails were beautiful, safe, and well maintained.

The horses were all healthy and had great ground manners. James trains all his horses and has had many of them since they were born, and that relationship has created horses that have get up and go if you want it, but that are calm and safe for a first time rider.

I would highly recommend James and his horses to anyone from beginner to experienced. If you are looking for riding lessons this is the place for you, too. I can tell that he truly enjoys what he does and will make it a positive experience. Some of his students that have graduated from high school still come back to visit and ride.
Thanks you, James! I will be back the next time I am in town :)

Pros: trained horses, professional owner, well cared for facility

Went there last weekend to take my daughter on a trail ride for her 11th birthday. The farm was well taken care of, horses were well groomed, and the trail ride was very scenic as it was a good mix of woods & open field. This gives riders plenty of shade during the hot summer months. Our instructor James was very personable, knowledgeable and safety conscious, which I appreciated. It was only my daughter's 2nd ride ever, and he took some practical safety measures that the first farm we went to last year never bothered doing. Tells me a little something about this guy's character. All in all, I only have good things to say about James and our experience. Thumbs up for Painted Sunset Farms!

I found out about Painted Sunset Farms online and was looking for a new trail ride to try with my boys. We have only been a handful of times and do not have a lot of experience. James was terrific! He was patient and calm. I would highly recommend going. My boys are 9 and 12 and they really enjoyed the ride and James was great with all our questions about the farm and raising horses! I hope we can do the three hour trail next time!

We took this trip as part of our Spring Break activities. We had 2 adults and 3 boys (14, 12, 9). James provided great instruction before the ride and made our family feel at ease before, during and after the ride. Each horse was well-behaved had its own personality. James knew them all very well. Our 9-year old rode on his own horse but was tethered to James during the ride.

We live in Western Cary so it was easy to get on 540 to get over to Eastern Raleigh. Once we got off 540 it was only 1.5 miles east and then a turn to the right.

We were there in the early Spring and things were just starting to bud. The property will be really beautiful in a few weeks when the huge shade trees are full. A perfect trip would include a morning ride and picnic lunch after. Maybe fishing too. Would recommend James and Painted Sunset Farms to anyone.

Pros: instruction, location, hospitality

Cons: none for us

We went out for a trail ride (mom and 3 kids) for spring break. We received the best "pre-ride" instruction we've ever had. James was very good at explaining to my girls the proper way to control the horse and then he allowed them to get comfortable on the horse by riding around the ring before we hit the trail.

It was a very pleasant experience and perfect for the horse-lover who just wants to go enjoy the day. Very affordable too.

We had an amazing time on our trail ride at Painted Sunset Farms. The trail was beautiful and it was hard to believe we were still in Raleigh!
I am a new rider and was a little apprehensive about the ride but James was very patient and knowledgable which put me at ease. The horses are well looked after, calm and well trained which also added to my relaxation and enjoyment.
I would readily recommend Painted Sunset farms and plan on returning soon to take some riding lessons :)

Painted Sunset is a great place to go trail riding. The owner, James, is very attentive to individual needs and gives great instruction for the safety and comfort of the rider.

Although located close to central Raleigh, the farm seems miles away from everything. Perhaps even better than the wooded scenery is the feeling of community and local knowledge that James provides.

For anyone looking for trail riding or riding instruction with a sense of what it is to be in North Carolina, I would highly recommend Painted Sunset Farm.

Took a trail ride and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. James was incredibly kind and thoughtful in his approach to riding ( it had been several years since I had ridden) - he made all of us feel quite at ease immediately. Very well-informed and knowledgeable with instruction and so personable. Just a joy! Lovely trails full of nature - hard to remember we were still in the city! We will certainly have many more trail rides at Painted Sunset Farms!

We recently had the opportunity to take a group trail ride at Painted Sunset Farm and we all had a wonderful time! The owner, James, took extra time in assisting each of us in mounting as well as practicing in the ring until we were comfortable to go. James personally escorts every trail ride, enhancing the safe and secure feelings of the riders.

The trail takes you through some beautiful, tree lined farmland right here in the middle of Raleigh! We quickly felt far removed from the bustle of city life and thoroughly enjoyed the peace of our surroundings. We even learned basic commands on steering a horse!

The horses were all very steady, sure footed, and calm, giving us a high level of confidence in just a few minutes.
What a great afternoon and very much a value on the dollar! We cannot wait to go again!

We had an amazing time at this beautiful and convenient location. The horses are beautifully kept and there is a horse to suit any style rider. The huge surrounding property has both fields and trees. The proprietor, James, is delightful to be with and a great instructor. We look forward to our next visit!

Our church, which had no equine sense, had a great time at Painted Sunset. Instructors were great on assisting and educating us about the world of equine. For many of us, this was our first experience riding on horseback and the staff was great! I highly recommend groups of any size to stop by Painted Sunset

During my childhood and through my late 20's I was an avid rider. I have experience in hunter-jumper, saddleseat, breeding and showing. As a lot of people once you start mixing college, careers and children you have to put your dreams/goals aside. Now that I am in my late 30's I have recently began re-kindling the joy I used to receive upon horseback ( a little rusty though). I decided one day to visit the farm which I pass by everyday. The owner was very generous to me, even though I didn't have an appointment. He took time out of his busy day to show my son and myself around the farm. Next thing you know, I'm back in the ring and it was great! The owner was very patient with me and knowlegeable. He restored my confidence and it was like riding a bike. Horseback riding is an excellent source of excercise (forget the stairclimber). Horsebackriding is not just for children, us adults can do it to.! I highly reccomend painted sunset farms for your entire family. Give them a try.
Sincerely,
Rusty in the saddle
