We just went to Pub 199 for father's day. We had 7 people in our party. The clams were great as always. A little disappointed that they ran out of the 6 pd. lobsters, but we all enjoyed our meals. When the bill came we were in a hurry to get the grandparents home and did not check the bill closely. It was $198, my husband added $40 for the tip and gave her $240 and we left. I thought it was a little high but we were in a hurry to get everyone home.
After we got home I started adding up the prices for everything and realized they added 18% to our bill for the tip. No one told us that they were doing that before or after we got the bill and the waitress didn't come back to say that the tip was already added. What a tip she got that night, almost $70. Thats what I call poor customer service.
When we go back, I will address the matter with them but I doubt they will do anything. I guess its the waitress who should fess up.
I know its our fault for not checking the bill closely but I would hope their were honest people out there.
Pros: price is right
Cons: rip off waitress
We had a party of about 23people from the office, the bartender and the waitresses were extremely nasty. They practically yelled at one of us that asked if they had coffee, there are nicer ways to say you don't have coffee!!! no need to get nasty seriously.
At the end of the night someone asked if they had any desserts and they told us to go to TGI Fridays, and they kept repeating it about 5 times ....yes lady we heard you the first time.
Food ok, but really not worth putting up with the service.
Pros: food ok
Cons: Horrible service, Only cash
I am not a frequent patron of 199, maybe 5 times a year. The food is good. The lobster did seem kind of small compared to before? Price did go up. Dinner, two drinks and tip, $30-35 for one? Service is friendly.
Don't know why it is CASH only in todays swipe card society.
Pros: Steamers still top notch
Cons: Prices went up
I have been to this place before. I remember the prices being less and for the cash only, picnic table seating it seemed fitting. NOW, for four of us it was $140 and to be honest the lobster seemed smaller than before... clams were still excellent. Service is like the environment there... basic... so it??s still good food, just not a deal anymore. I will not be going back there any time soon.
Pros: Food is still top notch, great clams, lobster taste great
Cons: Lobster seems smaller and prices went up!
I was in NJ, alone, for a ten day job in Peapack. Someone said, "you will be amazed" at Pub 199. They were right.
The 1-1/4 lb whole lobster was sweet and brought memories of New England long ago. [taste and $$] Since I was alone I asked to be seated in the middle of the room where families were enjoying themselves.
Good but bare bones service. Enough food to fill. And, if I am ever in the area again I'll bring Dorothy and a camera [for the zoo on the walls]
Pros: Excellent Fresh Lobster; $$
Cons: None
USED to be a great deal for seafood.
$16 for 2 dz clams, lobster, and baked potato and $1.75 for wings.
NEW prices are $20.95 and $3.75 respectively.
Everything is the same except maybe the new "laminated" menus. Still w/ the same safari decor.
It is still an OK deal for seafood but I would not frequent as much in the future.
REason not to go?
1.) the higher prices (no longer a catch)
2.) the wait on fri/weekends
3.) drink requirement even with the higher prices (+ bar priced)
4.) cash requirement even with the higher prices
(the bill racks up quick now w/ the higher prices, higher likelihood u mite find urself at their atm - get a credit card machine please)
5.) the lobsters are smaller, maybe its just coincidence or my visit *shrug*
6.) not worth the drive anymore
REason to go?
1.) great clams (fresh - since they go through so much)
2.) still an ok deal for seafood
3.) been going for a few years now
4.) thats it
Pros: fresh clams and decent seafood
Cons: premium priced now (y not spend a lil more and go to seafood buffet? minado?)
Juicy sweet lobster (appx. 1&1/4 -lb.) + dozen clams with potato <$20. Casual lodge-style room; family atmosphere; passable service; there might be a wait for a table. Also, one drink minimum (soda OK) and CASH only!
Pros: cheap fresh seafood
Cons: walls covered with trophy animal heads
This restaurant is ultimately my favorite place for seafood EVER. The clams are huge, the lobsters are huge and the price is super affordable. Definately somewhere to check out if you live in northern jersey.
