White Castle is not one of my favorite franchise joints as a rule. The famous steam grilled cooking of the thin little meat patties simply do not hold enough beefy punch for me. They will do in a pinch though, the soft dinner roll quality buns help, and I like that I can have them hold the onions that often further smother the poor little wafer thin piece of meat. I do like the chicken rings and the fried clams and fish nibblers, which you cannot get in decent quality in any other fast food environment, and the big selling point in this to me is the convenience of the drive thru. They are also the only onion ring alternative to Burger King among the big chains, and White Castle may have BK beat in taste.

I like that they keep their items as freshly made as possible, so I don't mind if it takes a minute longer. That beats having a burger that has spent 15 minutes or more waiting in a warmer. It seems like only McDonalds still does that, and I believe even they try to keep the inventory moving to keep that at a minimum.

My one major beef with White Castle is with the fries. Every White Castle I have ever been to over the years barely cooks their fries! These are frail little sprigs to begin with, and why they crinkle cut such tiny slices, I don't know, but there is no golden exterior, no crisp crunch.

The reason have posted here on this W,C. location's section is because this is where I first tried the breakfast menu items. Until I saw in passing that a car had pulled up to the drive thru menu board one morning, I wasn't aware White Castle served breakfast. Perhaps it's a franchise by franchise thing. What is amazing is, it was so good, I bet this could be a barn burner of an income surge if they promoted it.

The made to order policy really shines here, because the egg is piping hot and is served on the classic White Castle soft buns. You can any combination: the egg with or without cheese, bacon or sausage with the egg and cheese, or the egg and cheese with the classic White Castle hamburger. I am a veteran of McDonalds and Burger King's breakfast menus, and there are nice things that can be said for some of the much more lucrative franchises' offerings. The Mickey D's sausage egg and cheese McMuffin, and the B.K. Croissan'wich are charmers, but this here, at White Castle, trust me fellow foodies, is something special!

You actually have to handle the sandwich gingerly because its so hot right off the grill. Coming out of the drive thru, it was clear from the start the first time that this is not something I can eat while driving without considerable risk. If you are an in car eater like me, bring a paper and pull over in the lot or better yet whatever local perch you can find eat these lusciously messy gems. I like the sausage and egg and cheese, though the spice of the sausage can be a little strong. The classic White Castle hamburger, with egg and cheese is excellent also, though, I'd skip the onions if you are heading into work that morning. Also, the egg and cheese tend to smother the taste of the burger. The bacon version is the weakest link to me, but still, the overall sumptuousness is a pleasure.

I'm not a coffee man, but I know McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts have big draws to their specialty items in that regard in the mornings. Also working against W.C. is that there are only a few White castles in any given area, and they are not always in the spots most convenient to major roads. This particular location is the only off the beaten trail, in an area bordered by Route 80 and Route 46. One could take the Hudson Street exit (66?) off Route 80 local lanes, and head south on Hudson a few blocks, or north from the Little Ferry circle of Route 46, but if your local W.C. has breakfast and you never knew it, I bet the manager has the same made to order policy that the place thrives on in it's mainstream operation. You have to try it.

The bad thing is, it will be another addictive vice. I should be eating a banana or some yogurt for breakfast.
