The Seeing Eye, Inc. was the first organization to train dog guides in the United States. Founded in 1929, they have been breeding and training their own Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds ever since. They have high and rigid standards for not only the health and quality of the dogs they produce, but for the way in which they are trained. They also do a fantastic job of matching each blind person with just the right dog for him or her. They treat each blind person with respect and I always leave there with my new dog and a sense that I can do anything I set my mind to do. Their motto is dignity and respect for blind people and they certainly live up to that. They totally support each student after they leave the school. If there is any need for it, they will not hesitate to send a trainer out to help someone where they live. Yet they do not retain ownership of the dog. They respect each blind or visually impaired person enough to sel them the dog for a nominal fee, giving them complete ownership of their dog. I currently have my third dog from them and will not hesitate to go back for another when the time comes. I highly recommend this school for any visually impaired person who wants the freedom and independence a dog brings.
