Years ago the Smithville Inn was literally my favorite restaurant. Very expensive, but great food, and yes, a great, historic environment. Well, the environment hasn't changed much, and the food is still very good (though not as good as in the past), but the service was sub par, at best. On both our last two visits we found that the staff seemed to be as polite as a paycheck would cause someone to be. The first of our latest visits found us waiting for quite some time (well over half an hour) to be seated, despite having a reservation. During our last visit I committed the sin of asking if I could have a salad made up with iceberg lettuce instead of their house salad. I was told it would cost an additional $8.00. Excuse me? Doesn't the steak that I am paying $40 give you enough profit margin, not to mention our drinks, and appetizers? You want another $8.00 to substitute iceberg lettuce for romaine and spinach? Please. To make matters worse, as the manager came around to visit each table, he gave us a pathetically feeble reason (which made no sense to anyone at our table) for why they could not do the substitution without an $8.00 charge. To think that we would actually buy such a feeble argument was an insult to our intelligence. Happily, he moved on quickly. Bottom line, the food is good, but not up to the prices they charge anymore, and if you do decide to go, better hope they have a different staff by the time you do.

I would recommend anyone visiting Atlantic City to make this a stop down or back. It's a wonderful colonial restaurant in a little colonial village. Pricey but worth it with great service, fantastic food and a terrific menu.

The food is really good here, but it's definitely on the pricey side. The service is pretty friendly and fast, though, so I'd still recommend it to anyone visiting Smithville.

If it weren't for the high prices, i would give this place 5 stars! The food, on the other hand, is absolutely incredible! Plus the property is beautiful! They are known to have events such as weddings on the property, and the pond out back is perfect for pictures!

The Smithville Inn has been at this location forever. I have been eating there since I was a kid. My parents had my 12th birthday party there. Many decades later, the original owners, Fred and Ethel are gone but the place continues to feature some of the same specials. Chicken Pot Pie is the most famous. It is decorated in colonial style. There is a big fireplace in the lobby...but they don't cook in it. The Inn is surrounded by shops and looks over a lake with geese. A wonderful experience. Brunch on Sundays, reservations a good idea.

New owners and a new chef make this one of our favorite stops. Traditional country style Restaurant got much needed love from the present owners and recieved great results from recent reviews. Good food and good service is all I need to keep me coming back, add to that owners and managers making personal table visits and you really feel they care.

Pros: Wine prices, atmosphere, home cooking

Cons: strong coffee
