.

I've been working out at The Gym for almost 3 years now, since shortly after it opened in Englewood. Previously I had been a member of Crunch in Manhattan and had also briefly tried out Training Grounds in Teaneck NJ.

Compared to Crunch, The Gym was a bit of a shock. The decor is in neutral tones, and the energy comes from the people working out, not the decor. The crowd was also older than what I was used to at Crunch, with 30, 40 and 50 year-olds the primary age groups in attendance (rather than early 20s).

Once I got over the "It's Not Crunch" shock, I quickly came to appreciate The Gym for what it is. The facilities are very nicely maintained, and the equipment 99.9% of the time in working order. There is a steam room and sauna for each gender off the locker room, as well as 6 showers, nicely tiled in neutral tones and with three shower heads each. There are 3-4 hair dryers, as well as complimentary body wash, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, body lotion, aerosol deodorant and hair spray, disposable razors, q-tips and cotton balls.

In addition to the main workout area with free weights, cardio equipment, stretching/calisthenic area and machines, there is a dedicated yoga/pilates studio, spin room, and one-on-one Pilates reformer room, plus a studio for group classes like 30-Minute Abs, Body Sculpting and Zumba.

In addition to all of this, The Gym also offers weight managements counseling and spa services. Personal trainers are present and available, but they are not intrusive and will not interrupt your workout in order to sell you their services. Finally, The Gym also offers a small selection of workout fashions and has a more than adequate selection of food and beverage and freshly made smoothies.
