The Detroit Zoo, located between Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, is a gem of a zoo. From summer concerts on Wednesday evenings to its stunning polar bear exhibit, this park is a great attraction. It's difficult to see everything in one day without thoroughly exhausting a family with young kids, but energetic adults could probably see much of it. Fans of the movie Coraline should stop to see the Rackham Fountain featured on the hearth snowglobe (no, the Detroit Zoo does not sell a fountain snowglobe). The zoo and local business sponsor Halloween, Christmas and Easter events for young children. A more exhaustive list of animals includes: butterflies & hummingbirds, penguins, rhinos, zebras, wolverines, eagles, prairie dogs, otters, frogs & other amphibians, snow monkeys and a farmyard.

I have read all the other reviews and I agree with most of them. It is very expensive to get in (including parking, please ...) It is a very long walk from the parking deck and then between all the animal houses, if there are any animals at the particular exhibits. It is nice that it is there, but I do not believe I will be paying all that money to do it again any time soon.

I have been to the zoo a couple of times...I think it is a pretty good zoo, especially for kids. It's maintained pretty well and its pretty clean. There is a lot to learn and do for people of all ages. My favorite exhibits are the polar bears, the lions, and the butterflies. The tram is also fun to ride.

There was a time when I refused to go to the Detroit Zoo. It was dirty and didn't offer very much. One day we decided to go their with our kids because we didn't much feel like driving to Toledo, our regular zoo. We were very pleasantly surprised! The exhibits were very well done and we enjoyed our entire day. The chimp exhibit was one particular one that we enjoyed. The park is now very clean and pleasing to the eye. Warning though....it can be very expensive to go here if you eat your meals there. We've learned to take a cooler of food to save cash. It works out very well.

The kids will love it, but a bit pricey. My son loved the reptile house and the polar bear exibit. I would go back, but not as often as i would if it was a little cheaper.

This is a great zoo to take the family. The polar bear exhibit is really put together well. It is easy to navigate around the zoo. They have a huge playgroup for kids to play on and the train is a perfect way to end the day. I would however offer a few more places for food and drinks. Those seem to be a little sparse. The train could also be a little cheaper but overall a great experience. My family loves it.

The Detroit Zoo is a family favorite. I'm lucky enough to live close and enjoy it many times throughout the year. I have a membership which is worth the money if you will go often. They are a very clean park and have tons to do. There is a train, many picnic areas, a park and of'course all of the animals. In the last years we have had baby tigers and a baby polar bear. The polar bear exhibit is awesome. It has an underwater tunnel. All of the animals are worth seeing.

The Detroit Zoo provides a great experience for both children and adults. The grounds are spread out with large exhibits featuring a variety of animals. This is a real nice zoo to visit. The only problem is the distance between exhibits , but everybody needs the exercise!!

Animals are clean and well cared for. Should have more snack areas open throughout the zoo , but that is the only complaint.

We get a membership every year and that allows us to enjoy the zoo a little bit at a time. We will go one day and only look at the butterflies and another day for the polar bears. It is a wonderful place for a toddler whose interests vary from week to week. They also have great activities throughout the year from charity events to cultural programs to the Halloween Zoo Boo (well worth it). The food is good as well... typical fare... chicken, hamburgers, with a few healther options thrown in.

We had the best time when we took our kids to this zoo. Wonderful animal displays. The gift shop was a little pricey but aren't all gift shops? The animals looked very well taken care of . We especially liked the penguin house.

Detroits zoo is not too bad. The zoo is kind of boring but does have a few stand out, excellent exhibits. The coolest exhibit by far is the polar bear exhibit, don't bother going if this one isn't open. They have a tunnel that goes underwater and you can see the polar bears swimming. It's pretty cool.

Whatever you do, don't pay to go on the moving ride/simulator thing. I have had more exciting times watching my bigscreen at home.

There are some nice exhibits to go to at the Detroit Zoo. The polar bear exhibit for one really does live up to its hype. However, if you go there during the summer be prepared for a lot of the exhibits to be shut down. It's for the animals' safety however, so I completely understand. However, when those exhibits close, then all the indoor exhibits get packed and it's extremely uncomfortable. FInally, the cost of admission seems higher than necessary. Go here on a cool day with kids and it'll be okay, just a little costly but a good experience.

The Detroit Zoo is a pretty big zoo and I'd plan on spending a good chunk of the day if you want to see it all. They have an AMAZING artic display of polar bears and seals. The butterfly house is so beautiful! You can't miss that while you visit. It's quite lengthy so for the little ones you'd really want to have a wagon or stroller just in case you end up with tired legs.

It's really a great deal if you would use it to buy their family package. Going just twice would save you money by the time you pay admission for 4 plus parking.

Detroit Zoo is worth a look. There's alway something to see there and you won't be disappointed!

I have been to my share of zoos and the Detroit Zoo is among the best I have been to. It is a great way to spend the day with family or friends, enjoying the nice summer or fall weather and the company of some spectacular animals. I especially enjoy the sprinklers scattered around the zoo which you can use to cool off in the intense heat.

The baby is so cute!! The size of this zoo is fairly good. It was extremely clean. And we LOVED the polar bear exhibit. I think this is the highlight of the zoo, but it is definately worth the price just to see the baby polar bear!! Parking was kind of pricey though I guess I forgot I was in the big city!

I've gone to many zoos throughout the country as I've got three young children. Some we like, some are okay, and some (like Detroit) aren't worth the money paid.

To start with, Detroit Zoo does not participate in the AZA zoo program in which buying a zoo membership at one zoo entitles you to get in free to most other zoos in the country. Strike one.

Strike two... the cost of the zoo is quite prohibitive. $11 for an adult and $7 for a child. And to park is an additional $5 per car. This is nearly double the cost of the next closest zoo, Toledo, OH.

And once we paid our fees, we were completely unimpressed by the exhibits. The zoo is long and narrow, with LOTS of walking in between houses. The only worthwhile exhibit is the polar bears. This truly was a great experience, but not worth the admission fee and all the other lackluster exhibits.

Also worth noting, the food kiosks were practically non-existent.

PROS: Great Polar Bears
CONS: Price, Lousy Exhibits

We have visited the Detroit Zoo many times this year. Our zoo membership always pays for itself! We love going as a family and enjoying a stroll thru the well kept gardens, the nicely paved paths, and the animal exhibits. The food at the zoo is great, but a lot of times we like to pack a lunch and enjoy it in one of the many beautiful areas to eat.

We went to the Detroit Zoo while visiting the area. It was very impressive. There are so many different species of animals. It was very well maintained. Be prepared to do a lot of walking! They also had a ton of baby animals, which made the trip even more special. Parking was very convenient. We actually saved quite a bit of money by using our zoo membership from our home zoo. Make sure you bring your zoo card!

The Arctic Ring of Life was probably the only major interesting exhibit that we saw at the zoo. Everything else was either off display or not that interesting. Especially for the price you pay to get in, you also have to pay for parking, and not to mention how pricey the food is inside the zoo. I think it is nice to go there once in a great while, and there is ample close by in the lot. The zoo is clean and well kept, but I would have to say, take a trip to the Toledo Zoo and you may find it more interesting.

The Detroit Zoo is a fun (and educational) outing for anyone of any age. I've been here many times in my life, either with my family, as a field trip, or as an "au pair" assistant. The zoo is constantly updating itself, and though the maintenance must be difficult, it is well done.

The price of admission isn't bad, but the costs for food is a little steep.

This is a great zoo! They have plenty of animals, and you can even go in the winter if you want. It is very well kept, very clean, not too expensive as far as admission goes, and they offer food and refreshments too! They also have a park to eat in if you bring your own food. You can see SO much there! They usually have something special too going on. GREAT ZOO! I would highly recommend taking the whole family there!

My favorites were the Polar bear exhibit which was awesome you walk threw a glass tube and watch the bears swim around you and over you it is so cool. The penguin house was great also they are so close as you watch them swim and walk around. I was disappointed they had to get rid of the elephants but the rest of the zoo is great we had a wonderful time. They have a train that takes you around the zoo. There are concession stands to buy your lunch or you can bring your own and eat it there. I have been to other zoos where the animals are so far away you can barely see them this is not the case with the Detroit zoo it was great. Adults and children will love it. Make sure to call for hours they are only open one day later until 8pm

This zoo is very well known and advertised. This is not a favorite of mine. A lot of the exhibits are empty.

I think in the middle of summer - the high season - more than one gift shop should be open. Also the concessions stands are closed all over the park.

The park is very big and the concessions are placed throughout which would be perfect if they were open.

The animals are great of course. But we go to the zoo quite often and have been here at different times throughout the year and have yet to see the train running.

It is not as clean as I would like. We saw a rat at the one large concession that was open - which really put sick sort of feeling on the whole day.

A bit of a disappointment.

Nice Zoo. It is a great place to take the entire family all year round. To me it seems that the animals are more awake and moving around in the mornings. You can enjoy the indoor exhibits in the winter. Fun for the entire family.
Getting a membership is a good way to go. It seems to pay for itself if you go more then twice a year.

The Detroit Zoological Park is a very great zoo. During the summer we like to visit atleast once a month. I like seeing the animals in the open exhibits. I can't get enough of watching the new baby polar bear. They also do fun days at the zoo for holidays. Bring your kids to the Boo Zoo for trick or treating with the animals.

I recently took my family to this zoo for a Saturday afternoon and it is really a wonderful location that has only gotten better over time. They have a wide selection of animals, gifts, etc. They also feature sprinkle systems that spray water so kids and adults can cool off on those 90 degree days. The only problem was the total lack of parking and there was construction on a few of the attractions other than that it was a perfect day.

The Detroit Zoo is one of the best zoos in the country. In addition to the numerous animal exhibits they offer beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens and a gorgeous fountain. Be sure to check out the new Arctic exhibit- you can view the polar bears and seals swimming through a unique underwater observatory. The penguin exhibit is also one of the best I've seen. Although the building is a little outdated, you get a bird's eye view of the penguins remarkable speed as they swim right past you. If you have a family and will be visiting the zoo more than once you will save money by purchasing the zoo membership for one year. You will receive free membership and parking for the entire year.

Offers many animals, and the train rides are always a plus. I do wish, however, that the train rides were free for members. We have a family membership that is a LIFE SAVER in terms of money. It costs $10 per adult, $5 to park the car, and $7 per child. Buy the family membership for $75! It pays for itself in one trip, at least for us (5 people in family). You also get 50% off other zoos throughout the country, and a discount in the store.

You also get 50% off other zoos throughout the country, and a discount in the store.

This is a wonderful zoo to take children too! We try to visit atleast once a year. The new polar bear exibit where you actually go under a tunnel and see them swimming is so neat! It is an older zoo, but worth a trip too!

This zoo is a great way to spend time with the family. The membership pays for itself in a few visits and I love taking the kids in the fall when it's much quieter. It's great exercise, too! This is one zoo where you do not feel sorry for the animals. They live in large well-kept habitats unlike some other zoos. The entire zoo is deliberately planned to look very natural. My favorite attraction is the Arctic Ring of Life with the seals and polar bears. Be sure to stop by and visit the baby polar bear! The zoo train is a great ride and worth the couple bucks.

We love the Detroit Zoo! Our favorite exhibit is the butterfly garden. It's so cool to be able to be right with the butterflies. We also love the polar bear exhibit, but it's not often we get to see them through the glass tunnel. My daughter loves the zoo so much, she calls it HER zoo!!!

I love the Detroit Zoo. It is great for all ages. They are continually adding new things. They have a train that takes you around the zoo. I love the penguin house. I felt bad when they had to get rid of the elephants though. They said our weather was to hard on them. They have places you can buy food and souvenirs or you can bring your own picnic to eat there.

Nice zoo, but plants are often overgrown giving the zoo a messy appearance. Very fee staff available for questions. You have to walk very far to get to the best animals.

Our local zoo offers special events such as halloween at the zoo (Zoo boo) and christmas lights at christmas. Nice for a change. There are nicer zoos out there but this is the closest one we have.
Definately get the year pass - it is well worth it and pays for itself, even if you just go a few times.

The Detroit Zoo is always a fun place for any one of any age to visit over and over again. The animals seem happy and well cared for. The exhibits are easy to follow and informative. We are never disappointed.

PROS: Fun and Informative
CONS: None Known

I've been to the San Diego Zoo... The Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, and a few other zoos. Detroit has a decent zoo. The exhibits, animals, and staff are worth the price of admission. Yes, they raised the price again. The rising costs of petroleum make delivering food and equipment to the zoo more expensive. When the owners of our sports clubs raise the price of tickets it is to pay for the athletes who make a living. When the zoo raises its price...it's to feed the animals and pay the staff to take care of them. The Detroit Zoo has made strides in maintaining a healthy environment for our animals. Yes, I was sorry to see our Elephants leave. But they were getting old and it was hard to care for them. They are in a great environment now and living better.

The kids still have a great place to go and see all the animals. There are other attractions. The train now costs to ride on it. But that too doesn't run on air. Someone has to maintain it.

All in all...a great place to spend the day with..or without the kids. After all..aren't we all a bunch of bigger kids?

PROS: Still a great value for your dollar.
CONS: A little more expensive than a couple of years ago.

This is the nearest zoo to my house, so it's the one I go to. It's not too bad, but I'm kinda sad that the elephants aren't there anymore. The arctic exhibit is really awesome though, and they've revamped some of the other exhibits over the last few years. There's a lot that is different since I was a kid. I took my 21 month old son there last month, and he loved going to the aviary to see the butterflies. That was really the highlight of his day because they fly right around you, they're not on the other side of the glass or something. I just wish their prices were a little lower and that they hadn't started charging to ride the train.

The detroit Zoo is very beautiful. They have a very large number of animals, most in a natural habitat-type setting. The price of admission is not too high, and their is ample parking. You can get quite close up to the animals. They also have good food at their snack bars and a wide variety of souveneirs. It has very beautiful landscaping as well.

This is a Sunday tradition for me and my 1 year old son. We visit almost every weekend no matter what the season. Buy an annual pass if you plan to go more than once-- it will pay for itself quickly, especially if you have a family. Things are pretty spread out at this zoo so be prepared to walk if you want to see everything. However, with little ones, you can make a small loop and be in and out in less than an hour. Of course, you can also take the train.

The Detroit Zoo is a great place to take your family year round. When the weather is warm, get there as soon as they open to take advantage of cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Plus, the animals are often awake and moving around in the morning. In the winter, enjoy the indoor exhibits like the tropical butterfly garden or the reptile house. And enjoy the fact that you will often have the exhibits to yourself! The 2 playgrounds at the zoo are also noteworthy. There is one for kids under five, and a second one for older children. The one complaint that is often voiced about this zoo is the way that the attractions are so spaced out. Seeing everything does require a lot of walking, so bring your stroller and plan on frequent breaks if you have little ones.

The Detroit zoo is one of the larger zoo's I've been to. It's not the best (Toledo is my favorite), but it still has many beautiful animals on display. It also has a great layout, very detailed yet easy to read signs to guide you to and fro, and some of the best french fries in the world. Yes, this zoo has good food. Come to see the animals, but stay for the food!

The Detroit zoo in Royal Oaks is the only zoo that metro detroit boasts about. They recently added the polar bear exhibit and it makes the trip worthwhile. They have all different kinds of animals and have different kinds of camps for children in the summer. You can drop off your kid before the camp starts and pick them up after the camp ends. It's a great place for a family outing and you can sign up for annual memberships.
