I think this is one of the premier alternative theatre groups in town. Staging is simple, using the back half of a store front on Burdick Street. Seating is intimate and limited, maybe 100 in an audience per performance. While this season (2009-2010) they are putting on established pieces like Rent, the theatre group also uses local playwrights, like WMU's Von Washington, or Trevor Stefanick (who wrote one of my favorite twists on the comic strip Peanuts called The Great Pumpkin Massacre), and even has sought out high school writers and performers. They have a late night series (11 pm). What the actors lack in expertise is replaced by their enthusiasm. Having been to the Stratford Festival in Ontario, and having seen Broadway and off Broadway productions in NYC, I have never left a Whole Art play dissatisfied.
