El Tamarindo is just up the street from Lauriol Plaza and yet it enjoys none of the hype or accolades of its famous counterpart. El Tam truly is an underappreciated gem on U Street. While service can sometimes be slow and orders on occasion get confused, they will give you a table if all you really want is to drink margaritas at 4:00pm and your whole party is not yet there. Down the street, if your party members are slowly making their way from their respective workplaces or you feel that you are not quite ready to commit to eating dinner, you will be asked to stand. I love Lauriol now and again, but El Tam consistently delivers strong margaritas and delicious Mexican food at any hour!

Pros: Margaritas and Steak Quesadillas

Cons: none

This is a neighborhood favorite of mine, it never disappoints. Huge pitchers of margaritas, and excellent, inexpensive food are highlights. Good service and an unpretentious atmosphere make it a great place for a casual dinner any night of the week. It is also convenient to the U Street bars and Adams Morgan.

Quality-Authentic El Salvadorian/Mexican food, Day & Night (5 am on the weekends). Pupusas, Tamales, Burritos, Chimichangas, Enchiladas, Taquitos... you name it, they've got it. Great margaritas be the glass or by the pitcher, a whole range of tequila brands (for those special occasions). Depending on what you order, you can get a great meal for a super-affordable price. The sides are in the $5-8 range, and the entrees hover around $10-15.For as long as I can remember, my go-to order is "2 bean-cheese pupusas, 1 order Chicken taquitos." It has never let me down.VERY accommodating for large groups/late-night munchies. PLUS: If you want to practice some Spanish (and you're feeling confident after those margaritas), give it a whirl at dinner. Everyone in the restaurant is bilingual.

The food at El Tamarindo was great; especially their pupusas and taquitos. They catered to us for an international training program in Washington DC. They were flexible and on time -- they made it easy for me to change plans. Everyone

The food was delicious, as always, but my order was incorrect. Grub Hub gave me a credit, but I was super bummed.
