Clyde's of Gallery Place

★★★★☆
This gigantic restaurant invokes an opulent Gilded Age hotel and contains three bars over two floors, each with its own personality.

Wood-paneled, spacious but not overwhelming, and always quality. Here, I can feel like a grown-up, seated next to be-suited mid-level executives and the occasional lady awash in pearls, but still nab a can pf BPR for $2 and a tasty burger or toasty sammy for less than $9. A bit corporate, being downtown, but the staff is young and fun, and the food never fails (crab and artichoke dip anyone?). Great for big groups upstairs, or a lively chat downstairs with the sociable bartenders.

Clyde's may remind some of a nicer TGIFriday's but I personally like the food and think of the restaurants as a far step ahead of such national chains. I've eaten at this location for brunch and at the Georgetown location for dinner and enjoyed both experiences. They offer large portions and hearty, well-made, standard American cuisine. I LOVE chicken n' waffles, and their "Joe's Fried Chicken and Waffle" was up-to-par with several of the local spots in DC where I've also had chicken n' waffles. Service here is good; waiters here are attentive and friendly. I came on one occasion in a group of 8 and our waiter at the time didn't falter with any orders and was very nice. 8 times out of 10 this (and other locations) are packed, especially with tourists, but I've managed to come without reservations at reasonable times (11ish for brunch, 8ish for dinner) and was seated immediately.

This restaurant is huge, with several different seating/bar areas. The bar areas are usually pretty packed and loud, but the upstairs dining rooms are well laid-out, and good for dinner conversation. It's right next door to Verizon Center, so there is a lot of tourist, as well as business, traffic. The food has always been good; nothing particularly exotic, but the seafood is excellent, as are the burgers. Great place to meet friends for a drink.

Clyde's of Gallery Place is located next to Verison Center in Chinatown which adds a perfect balance to the dining selections in that area. Famous for Maryland Crab Soup which is, in fact quite good. Enjoy any selection from their seasonal seafood menu. No disappointments here.
