After a number of recommendations from friends for mellow venues to see live music, I finally decided to scope out the Zoo bar.

Having played in a number of bar bands myself, I can tend to be a bit of a snob when it comes to amplification. Simply put, a bar of this size does not need such a powerful PA.

I think that this would be an awesome venue for live jazz or acoustic sets, but its size and shape make rock a challenge. After about 5 minutes of overdriven mediocre harmornica, I decided to move outside...

Scene-wise, this place gets two thumbs up! Mellow, older (30s-40s) crowd. Definitely a lot of regulars, and I can see why. It is a jeans and t-shirt kind of joint, drinks are pretty cheap, and it is completely devoid of frills. I can dig it.

Pros: Good Spot For Live Music, Affordable Drinks

Cons: Small venues should not amplify the music

The Oxford Tavern (lovingly known as the "Zoo Bar" to those who frequent it due to the proximity to the National Zoo) is a great neighborhood bar with a great atmosphere and pretty good food!

The bar is small and cozy and a great place to see bands. There is an AWESOME blues band that plays the 2nd Friday of every month (Sookey Jump). Be sure to get there early - the place can get pretty packed!

The only downfall is the parking - it is park on the street or ride the Metro. If you drive and get there later, finding a place to park can be a real bear.

If you are looking for a more mature crowd (NOT old, but NOT college - more like 30s-40s), a great atmosphere, some good food & awesome bands - this place is for you!
