The Reef

★★★☆☆
There are many reasons to like the Reef: 14-foot-high windows overlooking 18th Street, the enormous rooftop deck, an outstanding all-draft beer selection, the lack of a dress code or cover charge.

I understand DC has pretty big restrictions on dispensing alcohol to minors, but after I got into the front of the place, getting by the bouncer and going to the nice and cool smoking lounge at the top I found myself awe struck. I had already ordered one drink, and then my situation deteriorated:

"Johnny Walker on the Rocks"
"How about this, you show me some ID, the drinks on the house."

Well, obviously I was not going to turn that down, but he thought I was not 21. I show him my ID where he proclaims I was not who was on the ID...that it was my brother. And I said, what? This is me...he walked away and didn't give me my drink, in attempts to serve others. I removed my library card, visa, student ID, insurance health plan and asked

"Would I take my brother's entire wallet and manage to look just like him for these other photos?"

It was worth the laugh and the free drink, but that bartender completely ruined my impression of the place. Talk about profiling.

I have only had drinks here. Great upstairs bar, very spacious, lot's of tables and a huge round bar which can fit a lot of people. Nice place to grab a drink after work or on the weekend. They serve food as well.
