Two years after buying a new Interstate battery with a 7-year warranty from this store, the battery stopped holding a charge and I tried to have it replaced per the warranty.

Instead, the store manager tried to convince me that the battery had failed because my alternator didn't put out adequate amperage, the alternator would cost $500 to replace, and the battery warranty was void because the "faulty" alternator had killed it. He offered to fix my dead battery problem for around $650!

I said I wanted to get a second opinion.

Instead of simply accepting this, the manager became quite irate and proceeded to claim that he had incurred $30 of "diagnostic expenses" and I should understand that he was being very generous to give me back my car without insisting I pay him $30 for his diagnosis.

We had never agreed up-front that I would pay a "diagnostic charge" for warranty service on a dead battery.

The next day I took the car to our regular mechanic. His diagnosis was totally different from Midas's. He determined that the alternator belt was loose and this was the cause of the low amperage. After tightening the belt the alternator worked fine.

He was also an Interstate battery dealer, and when he tested the battery, he found it was defective. He called interstate and confirmed that he could honor their warranty and that my prorated cost of the replacement battery would be about $30.

My total cost for the correct diagnosis, belt adjustment and battery replacement was around $55. - A far cry from the $650 that Midas had proposed the day before!!!!

Came in for a check engine light. Simple enough. But each time I left, (brought the car back six times!) the light popped back on within a 20 mins of driving away. Still I was patient; kept figuring they'd get it right, plus I'd paid them $800! They never fixed the problem. But that wasn't the worst part. Over Easter
-I'd dropped it off again- they called and asked me to come get my car, the guy I'd been working with was fired; no reason given. I asked for the Manager. He wouldn't give me his name, and told me (screaming) that if I didn't come get my car in 24 hrs he'd have it towed. Said he knew nothing about this check engine light issue, and I'd better get my car off his lot or pay stoarge fees. $800 later, my check engine light shines on.
