My tip: Don't hire or talk to any of the personal trainers. The gym is fine, people are neutral and the equipment is good, but the trainers... They are college grads who got their experience by taking test and not actually lifting weights.

Terrible customer service. Was late on first payment in 4 years and they refused me entry into the gym. I came back on Saturday (I work a 9-5 and commute a half hour each way) to cancel my membership and was told they don't do

DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT HERE!!! Absolutely everything that was explained to me verbally was 100% INCORRECT. I signed up for a personal trainer (I spoke with Hector), they said once a week, twice a week and once a week for $128/month. I said

ALL ANYONE HERE CARES ABOUT IS GETTING MORE MEMBERS PERIOD.I have been going to hillard scince they have opened nearly five years ago and I can say at first it was nice. But now lets talk a true walk through.Getting evan into the parking lot is a challange at the three way stop in front no one seems to know how to follow a three way stop.Getting checked in sometimes takes a while and would be nice if they had automated doors becuase no one seems to know to use the right door.Opens at 5 but most days lucky to have someone there to open on time.Walking through every one to get to the locker room is at times unbearable expicillly on mondays trainers and members alaways blocking the entrance not to mention the machines people moving to not have a walkway.Or that most the fire exits are blocked with equipment in front of the door. Now once into the locker room make sure you dont have heart mumers from people slaming the locker doors literily as hard as they can.WHatever did the lockers do to you to desearve this abuse? While using equipment you will be hard pressed to find a bike that doesent have a bent crank,an oliptical that doesent make noise or feels one side is higher than the other,or other various noise-hard spots in moving machines. If you happen to go into the cardio cinima be aware it is either 55 or 85 degres nothing in between Im not shure who or what controls this. There is a homeless man that basically lives in the lounge in the locker room if he happens to not be there it will be overrun by anoying kids that run through the locker room and showers cussing and yelling.Lets see oh yea nothing gets fixed like ie .. the pool that has been inoperative for three months now.Very low water pressure on the sink fausets and water fountains that have handles broken off them.Typical naked guys in the locker room but also feeling free to brush thier teeth and shave and try to talk to you ...yea relly.Guys rudly on the cell phone yelling at thier gilrfreinds.Caustic cleaning products used mixing bleach and amonia together yes this is a big health hazard but they think its ok I geuss.o and if you are racist (wich im not) but the gym is starting to be overrun by mexicans.

Unfriendly staff, FILTHY facility.... no one wipes down the machines or equipment and they don't even have towels or cleaner to do so. The swimming pool is alway cloudy, floaters, and green. We tried it for a year and hated it.....absolutely hated it. Now they want me to re-join? You kidding me? Take your money somewhere else!

Oh for pete's sake people, GROW UP. I'm in a year and a half contract which I paid in full up front. I was told several times of the $15 facility fee before signing AND you are advised of the facility fee again via signage on the front desk weeks before you are charged the fee or asked to pay it. There is no option for monthly training. If you want to do it you have to commit to a full year. Yes, there are some not so good trainers there but you are never locked into your trainer, you can switch at any time to find someone that works well with you and your goals. The training mgr is ALWAYS there whenever I work out and he made a point to know my name and say hello. My trainer is AMAZING and is completely dedicated to my process. I agree that there seems to be a lot of cardio machines without working TV but did you ever get the machine # and report it to the front desk? Probably not. Do you think it just gets magically fixed overnight. Seriously, go to the gym and run out your frustrations in life instead of leaving childish reviews. This is a gym, a corporation, there are rules and contracts, you are an adult, act like one.

Once you get past the deceptive contract (read the fine print no matter how frustrated the sales person acts,) this location is full of people who must hate their jobs. The girls at the front desk would rather chat with the block head personal trainers than get people signed in in a timely fashion. There never seems to be a leader in the building. Several times I have had a question that is over the heads of the girls at the front desk. Getting them to get somebody who knows something about anything is like pulling teeth. 10 minutes later when a manager shows up (who isn't even a manager) will offer minimal help with a disrespetful attitude. I have never been anything but civil and calm with these people and they just sort of have this passive aggressive attitude which never results in a positive experience. I can't wait until this comitment is over.

I agree, the gym is good, the staff pretty nice (except for the deception when signing up) but corprate (Global Fitness Holdings LLC) crooks! I know its a $10 fee to cancel but the process to do so lets them decide when that happens and how many times they can charge you after you cancel. Just beware, its easy to join and pretty inexpensive, but they make it impossible and expensive to leave. The fees add up till their done, not you!

These people are a billing nightmare. they will bill under three different names to get your money. They will take money out of your account multiple times and when you call to ask what it is they say this kinda fee, call back 20

Stop whinning.....Most of these people complaining are people who complain about everything and anything. Its a modern gym...what do you want? Do you even go....?

Urban Active is an incredible gym with the best workout equipment on the market.... Its have the cost of the YMCA. Also has a rachet ball court which is rare....

I have been going to this gym for over two years now. The equipment is always broken and takes a month to get fixed and the tvs don't even work on half of the machines. I am glad I am under the older contract and don't pay the twice a year "maintenance fee" b/c that money is going into someone's pocket and not into the updating of the gym.

Also, they have a women's section which never has half of the weights and the trainers go in there and take up the entire area so it isn't a women's area...it's additional space for the trainers.

My contract currently expired about 3 months ago. However, I never got around to cancelling it. I called to request the cancellation document be faxed to me (for the 2nd time) and they gave me to a "Fitness Consultant" who I later found out was the Assistant General Manager. He told me to come into the gym which I told him twice I was not doing and to just fax me the document. I asked him his name and he then hung up on me. By the way his name is John. Just a head's up if you are trying to cancel your membership. He is a piece of work.

My husband and I joined the gym a few months ago and love everything the gym has to offer!! The day that we were going to sign up, the rep. showed us around and was very informative. When it came to signing up for the membership he was not pushy by any means! Unfortunaltey, at the time to do our "free" Personal Training visit a week later... that is a nother story. He was very pleasant and obviously knew what he was talking about, but as soon as the 30 minutes were up, he came down to business and was rather pushy with the sale of the Personal Trainer package for my husband and myself... He became irritated with us after we told him that we couldn't afford it at the time. He then trashed our lifestyle and how we spend our money when it could be put towards the Training Staff to better our lifestyle-I found that very rude!
Overall, since we have joined, we have nothing but the best service! I have taken their classes and love them! I use their tanning beds and love them too! As for needing a personal trainer---DONT DO IT! I have already lost 5% body fat since starting without the help of a Personal Trainer!! But I must add, that when I am there, if I have a question about how to use equipment or what I could do to help certain parts of my body, there are a few Trainers that will take the time to assist me without a problem. I love U.A Fitness!

To all of you who are considering joining this gym, I strongly urge you to reconsider. My experience began with a pushy sales women who promised diet plans, weight loss goals, and nutritional plans to assist me in with my weight loss. What I received instead was an unmotivated trainer, who admittedly hated his job. For 213.50 a month (this is excluding my actual membership) I did not receive any goals, I was weighed in once, and had no nutritional guidance. He was a "work out buddy". I complained to the PT desk, and they again promised it would be taken care of, however the situation was never rectified on my behalf. Aside from my personal complaints, one of the managers approached me about the work out quality I was receiving, they specifically asked if "Kyle" my trainer was not providing the training he should be. They have absolutely no concern for the customer.

The only personal assistance you get at this gym is when they are trying to sell you on signing up for a personal trainer when you first sign up. If you don't want to sign up for a personal trainer, they don't show you around the gym to actually introduce to the gym, the equipment, etc.

The staff is a bit arrogant and very unhelpful.

BEWARE! I agree with the other reviews that Urban Active is "deceptive," 'shady," "under-handed" and they find strict excuses to not let you out of their contract. And I've seen another posting that they have pushy/high pressured sales which I'd also agree with.

I signed a membership on month to month & explained that I didn't want a contract as I didn't know how long I'd be in Columbus. I then met with the training department - I again explained I didn't want a contract. Training said if I submitted a piece of MAIL with an out of area mailing address I could cancel the contract. Based upon this, I agreed to sign a contract.

Well, about seven months later I told the same person I'd signed my training contract with that I was leaving for the winter and needed to cancel the contract. I provided a piece of mail with an out of state address. He processed my cancellation and assured me there wouldn't be any problem.

This wasn't the case. About two months later I'm contacted by UA's billing company - that I didn't show proof of relocation. I disputed. I contacted UA and again provided a different mailing with the same out of state address.

UA changed the reason my cancel wasn't accepted to me allegedly being in the negative balance on my training sessions. I again disputed this.

Then UA changed it again - back to I didn't show proof of relocation but at this time they set further restrictions on what documents are acceptable in order to cancel due to relocation to include a lease, utility bill or letter from my employer. This isn't what was communicated to me before I signed my contract and I've shared this with UA and that I signed the contract based upon being able to submit mail with an out of area address. I wouldn't have signed a contract based upon these cancelaton terms as I'm aware I likely wouldn't have been able to provide these restrictive items.

I don't even have any of these for Columbus as I don't have a lease or utility bill there either. I travel for work and I often relocate temporarily on my own too.

Meanwhile UA has continued to bill me over $100 a month for my training - I don't even have a membership there to use training sessions. And their training prices are HIGH.

Also, I read another review that there's a way to early cancel a contract if you pay a fee - no surprise that UA hasn't offered me this option either.

I won't give them access to my bank account again.

Pros: The gym was nice but going downhill, less classes offered

Cons: Deceptive practices to get people to sign contracts

.

I am sure this facility was very nice AT ONE POINT. My fiance and I have been going to this gym for about 1 year now and just signed a new contract at a "lower cost". We recently learned of the $15 twice a year "facilities fee" that is hidden somewhere on our contract. I would almost not mind the facilities fee if they actually kept up the facility. The TV's rarely work and the entire place seems to be going downhill. I do enjoy the bottle hunt for the cleaner spray. Good luck finding one with anything actually in it. The management team is arrogant and unapproachable as well. If it wasn't for location, we wouldn't go here. We also saw an employee on an eliptical that didn't wipe it down when they were done. That speaks volumes for the culture of the organization.

I have been a member since June and this gym is not too bad. If you are looking to use a bench press or ever use an olympic bar you can forget it because there are only about 4. It is a great place if you are looking for machines and dumbells. I would say it is more focused towards women and older adults. If you are looking for any type of power lifting this is the wrong gym for you. I only joined becuase they have a basketball court...

I am not happy with the cancellation process at the gym. They make it very hard to cancel the personal training. They do not allow you to cancel at any time. If you need out, you must pay more or have a doctors note or move more than 25 miles from the gym. They will not work with the customer and it is very wrong! I need out of my personal training because of financial reasons, but in order for me to, I have to pay. This is ridiculous!!! You should just let people out and give them the money back they did not use. I will still be a member of the gym, just not the personal traning. You need to work with the customer, especially during these economic times. I find it rude and just plan selfish that you cannot let the customer get out of their training easily. So if you're interested in the personal training or becoming a member, please, please, please pay close attention to all the "policies" because they (corporate) are so strict and will not break the "policies" I am a disappointed customer!!!!!

I joined when they first opened. The gym was clean and neat, but is definitely going down hill fast. And I must agree with the person who said they are underhanded ... that is VERY true I've experienced it first hand and will probably be leaving the gym for another soon!

I signed an up-front payment contract. I was told that I pay everything up front. When I signed the contract, I asked the sales rep "Once I pay this, I owe you nothing else? This is all I owe?" and he said "Yes" to both. Two months into the contract, I find out that they charged my credit card $15 for a "facilities fee" and will continue to do that every 6 months through the end of my contract. Their sales staff blatantly lied to us about how much we are paying. When I confronted them about it, I was told that it was in the terms and conditions on the back of the contract. How does a one line on the back of a laundry list of terms and conditions absolve them of lieing to their customers to get a sale??? My sister-in-law experienced the same thing in the Beachwood Ohio location. I know other people who experienced other dishonest business practices who had memberships with them. I will NEVER do business with them again. Be VERY VERY careful about what they tell you and in reading your contract. They are out to get you!

My sister-in-law experienced the same thing in the Beachwood Ohio location. I know other people who experienced other dishonest business practices who had memberships with them. I will NEVER do business with them again. Be VERY VERY careful about what they tell you and in reading your contract. They are out to get you!

I was not a gym person before becoming an Urban Active member. I think they could do a better introduction/showing you where everything is kind of first visit. But overall, the gym is clean, the staff seems very knowledgeable. There are all "types" in training; including everyone from a newbie such as myself to obvious body builders. Nice, "normal" people looking to get in shape. No judgements, just encouraging. I would highly recommend the personal trainers there. Very affordable and worth it!
