Beautiful gym, never too crowded. Extremely clean, and very service oriented. This is the only gym I would go to in NYC. Ive been a member of NYSC and Equinox. Clay is far superior.

This place is sad. It pretends to be high end but misses the mark. Its dirty and all the people working there are unprofessional. Lazy front desk employees are too busy playing on texting to pay attention to customers. I was double charged one month and couldn't even get a return phone call about getting the issue resolved. So I had to go into their "business office" in person to get an answer, where the staff was having a loud conversation and the bitchy horse-faced old lady and hairy old man were talking about sterods they been doing. THIS IS PROFESSIONAL? Not to mention the place is not kept well, the classes are boring, the trainers just go through the motions, and there is nothing enjoyable about this place. Go to Boom Fitness, Club H, David Barton, Crunch, or Hype instead.

AWESOME FACIAL!!!! The whole package!!!

I have not been for a facial in the city for a long time. While there are many spas to choose from, I had yet to find a place with a practitioner, worthy of my time, money, and skin! I usually go when on vacation now a days. Mostly I want the best care from the esthetician, one who is skilled, and also who has great touch. It is hard to find the whole package. The woman, Caryn who worked with me was very accommodating, used great products, and really knew her stuff!!!! She was down to earth, not at all pushy, or stuck up like some of the sales people, (oops I mean estheticians) which is such a turn off, even when we want to buy needed products. There is a lot of crap out there, and she was a gem. She only talked when necessary, so I could 'relax', and I did. Its hard to wind down, and it takes me a while, with the stresses of life. She did deep cleaning with extractions, and used Vitiman C, with AHA. She also did a little work on my neck, and she felt better than some massage therapists! And I'm very particular, fussy. Awesome results, with less pending irritation on my face. My skin really asorbed all the great ingredients, and she used only what worked. I was really impressed! And I learned a few things. The fitness area I saw was very zen feeling, as far as fitness goes. The cafe had some great healthy creative options, will come back for a meal, or real smoothie. Really good energy, Clay is a temple like said.

I came here for the first time last week, and I have to say, this place is a hidden treasure!

You definitely have to keep your eyes peeled to find their door (just a little orange sign until you're right on top of the entrance), but once you're in, this gym/spa is like stepping into another world.

I had a facial and a peel with Maya, and I have to say it was the best I've had in years in the city. I don't get facials too often and when I do, it's really about great extractions. She had a perfect touch and was so thorough. She also offered great tips after and somehow still made the facial incredibly relaxing.

I caught a special that day for 1/2 price brow shaping and since she had been great, I went for it. Also perfect, and very thorough.

Definitely worth every penny, and I'll be back here regularly.

I was a bit skeptical about this place when I saw the membership price, but after a tour and a trial month there, I'm hooked! Clay makes working out every day plausible. The cafe offers tons of delicious choices (the Greek wrap is my personal favorite) and the menu is color coded to make choosing your meal easier.

I bought a gift certificate for a facial as an x-mas gift for a close family member and it was the worse decision I made. They have a very nice website but please don't get fooled. The person I bought the facial for was completely unsatisfied with the facial. The woman who was doing the facial would not stop talking throughout the entire session. She was not focused on her job and instead more interested in socializing. The extraction was terrible because she only brushed upon a few spots very quickly and the person seemed inexperienced. The facial was so bad that she broke up in zits the following day.....never again will I step foot in here.

Cons: bad facials

I enjoyed the facial I had at the Clay Spa. This spa is parf of the Clay gym, but separate enough so you still feel like you're in a traditional spa. Nice service menu with a very good esthetician who took very good care of my skin.

went to Clay last wk to ck it out and I was not impressed as I thought I would be. I looked on their website beforehand and was really excited but when I got there, I realized that someone just took really good photos for the site. +'s: cafe - really good healthy food & smoothies - BEST. # combination lockers - no need to bring a lock. personal saunas. sun deck. classes - I only took the power sculpt & yoga which were pretty cool. all machines have working TVs on them. didn't get too crowded. people were friendly. cold eucalyptus scented towels. body wash has a nice grapefruit smell. -'s: the ceilings were way to low so it got pretty hot in there. locker rm is small & little funky smelling - this drove me crazy. the lockers could be a bit bigger. don't get me wrong, this is a very nice gym, but comparing it to Club H Fitness that I cked out the wk before, I don't think it is as nice and not worth the price.

This "gym" (and I use that word hesitantly) is truly my sanctuary. The staff is super-friendly and accommodating and the members are unpretentious.

I've been a member at Crunch and Equinox and if you just want to lift weights or show off those are the places for you. However, if you want a relaxed atmosphere where you can enter into your own "zone" then Clay is it.

I'm a martial artist and Clays is essentially my own private kung fu studio. Many of the staff are martial artists so they are definitely in tune with my needs. Plus, I've found some great sparring partners! Moreover, the equipment, namely the FreeMotion devices, are centered around core-strength. Working stabilizer muscles will ensure that you prevent injury.

If you simply want to grunt, lift-heavy, and bulk-up this is not quite the place for you. However, if you want a total wellness, functional strength workout that will give you a slamming body then join Clay.

Also, the cafe is super-delicious and very healthy. Even if you don't sign up, you should definitely stop by and have a meal - everything from breakfast to dinner to snacks and smoothies.

Oh, and the showers have shaving mirrors in them. I ALWAYS shave in the shower so it was good to see I could do the same at Clay.

One last thing, it's not a "trainer heavy" facility. Some comments have said that most members work out with trainers, but I have not seen that. I guess it depends on what time you go. However, all gyms have trainers and I've seen plenty at Crunch and Equinox. I think that's unavoidable no matter where you go.

Highly, highly recommended.

In the past 6 months i have to say that the Spa at Clay have been the Very BEST! Not many amenities.....

It does help nme Relaxing, and unrushed, Leo who i recommend, have improved my work-out programs. I must say the people/members at client are a good networking people, which I like.

Cheers

Have worked out here three years, the space is great in every way. I have two issues and unfortunately am torn between staying and leaving...but the problem is where to go.
First the equipment is very limited, it's great if you only workout with a trainer but lackes depth as far as equipment is concerned.
Second , many of the members do workout with trainers, which leads during certain times having to navigate a relatively narrow workout floor around a dozen trainers and an equal number of members, they tend to not have gym etiquette and are oblivious to where they plop themselves down and the mess they leave for paying members...time to move!

i love this place! i joined about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. i agree that it might not be for everyone, but if you're in the market for a gym that's a cut above your average NYSC, you should check out clay. the amenities are fabulous--from the cold towels to the brand new cardio equipment w/ personal tvs, to the gorgeous flowers in the locker rooms. i have been working with a trainer since i joined and she's great. it's just an enjoyable place to work out.

I found out about CLAY through a friend of mine who uses the club when she is town from L.A. She recommeded CLAY because I have been dissatisfied with the larger spa chains in the area. I called to get more information about the spa and the person I spoke with was very helpful with educated descriptions of different treatments they offer and also gave me basic information on membership. When I came in for my treatment the front desk was very accomodating and showed me to the locker room to change into the robe and sandals. I met with someone in membership after my wonderful custom massage, saw the entire club, and fell in love! I've been a member for a week now and I couldn't feel more at home and happy with my decision to join!

Pros: Relaxing Fireside Lounge, Accomodating Staff, Great Group Fitness

.

Brand new cardio equipment and spinning bikes. Everything was replaced a month or two ago and I couldn't be happier. They also have the "cardio wave" machine which I have yet to find at another gym. Trainers are helpful and informative. New group fitness classes are added seasonally, some favorites are Jay's "NFL training" class (not for the weak of heart), Latin Grooves, and all of Kristin's Yoga classes. You can even get a few friends together to create your own pilates class. The smoothies are addictive, and the cafe staff is ready with a nutrition facts sheet if you want to compare carbs, calories, and protein. The front desk more often than not will greet you by name, and if a service needs to be customized especially for you usually everyone is more than happy to oblige. Also there is complimentary concierge service via a phone in the member's lounge with a direct line to Abigail Michaels. Glad I found Clay a year ago, I was relatively new to fitness and it was comforting to see that other members were a range of shapes and sizes. Also their spa is wonderful, get a massage from Thomas and you'll walk out feeling like butter.

First of the many things that went wrong, they had me down for the wrong service after I repeatedly told the receptionist what I had wanted and corrected him twice over the phone. And they didn't even bother to call to confirm the appointment the day before, I had to call to make sure I still had an appointment. So needless to say I ended up with the wrong service and it was terrible.
Secondly, my body balancing massage did not 'relax and rebalance' me at all. Felt like 15 mins of actual massage and then just stretching, which I could've done way better on my own.
When I told the front desk of my experience they offered nothing, not even an apology.
Unhappy beginning to end. Would not go back.

I am baffled as to why everyone is ripping on this place. It's no more expensive than some chains and it offers a lot for its demographic, namely those busy NEW YORKers who prefer a calm, private space to work out and don't need pumping music & eye candy to break a sweat. Everyone is respectful and helpful and it's a great place to try new things or start out- my sister now loves working out (she felt uncomfortable elsewhere) and I started yoga. Classes are key to getting your $'s worth; the instructors are top-notch and there's few students. The place is always spotless and my only con is that the cardio equipment could use updating (it's adequate, but all the other equipment is much better).

came to this website and read some reviews. I walked into Clay and was immediately welcomed. The gym is amazing, the staff and level of caring is top notch, the equipment is new and abundant. I challenge anyone to find a more convenient location- heart of Union Square, um every train available. Anyone who thinks this place is to she-she or can't get a good workout is obviously a raging moron. I am sorry that people define a gyms success by the amount of grunting meatheads. If you had half a brain you'd realize working out is a state of mind, a good workout can be achieved ANYWHERE. To the nay sayers of this gym, I am glad you chose not to join, the place has such a positve energy, don't want to ruin that. Needless to say I joined and haven't be let down. Cheers to Clay

What happens when people who wish they had style get some money to design a space. Expensive finishses of sorts found in a Westin or W hotel lobby bar do not belong in the middle of a gym. The equipment, although it looks new from being hardly used, is dated and needs to updated. The staff is dishonest and shady (everyone seems to get different prices to pay for the same thing). This is not a gym, it's a style-less squandering of someone's money (and a lot based on the expensive design materials) to put a bad gym on a an ugly block.

In the city from the Northwest and heard the buzz about this gym. For the price thought it would be on Park Ave.but to my surprise(or dismay)was in the heart of 14th street in mid-town. Was stunned on entering, beautiful(on 14th street mind you)but my reception was less than warming considering the price. As I was wondering around the gym, standing by the fire place I had to chuckle, where were the 25 women I got to choose from, where were the roses to give out? Sorry, not impressed!

Received a tour of this place.
What a big show for not much value.
The people working at the Reception desk were out to LUNCH. I guess I did not look like I could not afford the very pricy fees. There loss.

I was made to feel very unimportant and very much not wanted.

Not worth the trip down to "fashionable" 14th. street.

Equinox. Just a fair massage.

I can not believe how fantastic this place is! I went with a friend to their recent holiday party and I was blown away. Completely gorgeous space to start with and the vibe that is created is so unpretensious and totally relaxed. There is a genuine quality to the way that people are treated there. The place was decorated with the most elegant arrangements and the food was delicious. They had an open bar that served the most amazing flavored champagnes...needless to say I have joined since then and feel like it is the first time that I have ever spent money in New York and not regretted it. So now that I've started working-out I am even more impressed with them. They play great music, the equipment is kept clean, they have a fantastic Pilates studio and THE BEST cafe. I love the smoothies!!! DEFINITELY A MUST!

Great to look at!
Very pricy, very she-she.
But give me a break.
Belongs in Bloomies....
Not on trendy 14th. street across from the Human Rescource Center and the cheap under $20 stores next door.
Nice Try Though.

I came into town for a long weekend.
Went to clay with a friend.
What a checkie place (WHAT NERVE)
It was totally empty. Not very stimulating to work out all by your lonesome.
The RUB..massage was so so- had much better.
Would not return .. no way. Too many other more interesting places in town.

I have never experienced anything like this club. When you enter you aren't assalted by loud techno music. This place is for people who want to integrate different types of training into their regimine. I have never experience the total package before joining CLAY with my wife. When my wife and I joined they helped us design a custom routine with different trainers that incorporates private Pilates, yoga, boxing not to mention the nutrition. After all of that we enjoy the deep tissue massage that we have earned. This club is not for showoffs and grunters...very refreshing concept to traing and so, so clean!!!!!

I just recently signed up at clay and couldn't be more pleased. Not only is the staff extremely helpful and friendly, but the personal training is also amazing. This place is great for just working out or hanging out. If you happen to be a serious weight lifter this probably isnt your place, but if you want a quiet, serene, and personable place to work out as well as relax, clay is the only place to go.

No question...Clay is an attractive space, in fact it reminds me of the Standard Hotel lobby in LA...think Philippe Stark...10 years ago. But what's the deal with all the high ratings?? If you want to lounge...by a fake fireplace, drinking a smoothie, mingling with the "Wallpaper" magazine set, or one of those "ladies who lunch" then this is the place for you...but if you are the least bit a serious weight lifter, don't even bother.

Quiet, elegant work out space that's focused on every detail--from the music to the cold towels. Equipment is plentiful; so far, it's not crowded. Trainers are focused and helpful. It's a great experience.

Come to have a great workout on the floor or in a class, and stay to lounge on the deck with a smoothie like no other. The serene environment, welcoming atmosphere, and knowledgeable staff will be sure to invite an "ahhh" as you enjoy a break from the daily grind.

I loved the surroundings, the atmosphere exudes
cool elegance. the fresh flowers, salad bar and smoothies were the perfect balance to the etherial
interior. the staff couldn't be more helpful and understanding. And then there's the fireplace(it has to be seen to be believed). A major plus was the nutrition program, the program director was both knowledgable and made me feel very comfortable.
CLAY offers the perfect combination of place, services, and professionalism of any club I've been to.

For anyone who hates most gyms because their overcrowded, intimidating, and brainless, Clay is the perfect antidote: salespeople who ask good questions without 'selling', a staff of amazing trainers, not too many members, no silly dancing classes, and great facilities. Expensive, but worth every penny.

Clay is truly the finest gym I've ever had the pleasure of working out in. Beyond the fact that the facilities themselves are impeccable and spotless, the staff is wonderful and caring. When you think of a gym most just think of a place to "workout in". Clay will forever change your perception of that.

I have used many gyms here in NYC and I have never found one that makes me so excited about going. Clay is VERY clean, beautifuly designed and well staffed. It serves as a gym and a spa. I feel relaxed and energized every time I go, and that is every day!

I used to belong to crunch and I just got sick of the attitude from the staff and dirty locker rooms. Clay is in my opinion, the best gym that ever happend to NYC and me!

P.S. It would be great if they would add more pilates class after 7PM for the working crowd.

Clay is a haven. Sometimes I go to workout and other times I just go, sit in the lounge or by the fireplace and just read. It's a chi-chi enviroment sans the attitude. The staff knows your name when you walk in and they really do everything to make you feel comfortable without coming across as fake. It's a perfect place to heal your mind and tone your bod.

Clay appeals to anyone fed up with the same ol', same ol' formula of health clubs. It's a great place to work out AND hang out. It can accommodate the novice or professional health freak, and the staff have a warm, friendly professionalism lacking in other clubs. The owner is an unheralded visionary in her field and eventually her recognition will come, hopefully well before less inspired copycats rip off the concept and claim it for themselves.
