Fabulous Food, wonderful service 5 Star Rating - World class

I don't know where to start. My meal started out with the Bruschette which far surpassed my expectations. Having lived in Europe for years, I didn't expect this to be so authentic. The caprese salad was also... perfection! Fresh and delicious. I tried the Piccata al Limone and the tastes were wonderful togther. I was fortuneate to taste my friends Veal Scallopni which was so tender and tasty I thought I had gone to heaven. After this wonderful meal I had to try the desset. The tiramisu took me back to Italy. I couldn't believe to find this taste here in the US. The atmosphere was peaceful and unrushed. I loved everything about the Gypsy. This is a wonderful find.

Pros: Unrushed, friendly staff, great choices (Tiramisu hmmmm)
Cons: Outside of building does not do this restaurant justice.

Excellent Date Spot 5 Star Rating - World class

Whatever kinks existed in the service previously, have been worked out. My boyfriend and I went on a Tuesday night. It was far from crowded but was very attractive place for dining. the stone wall, linen covered tables, and soft light were all perfect. The waiter was very attentive, almost too much so and the chef came out to ask how we enjoyed the meal. our glasses were never empty and we were well attended to.

We didn't order an appetizer, we ordered the gypsy salad; he had the pork chops which were absolutely delicious bursting with flavor and extremely moist. I had the pasta primavera with chicken. While it was tasty, it paled in comparison to the pork chops. he enjoyed the wine, i had their version of a mojito which was good but i let it sit for a few minutes first to let the flavors blend.

I almost missed the place because on the outside it didn't look like what i expected (i thought the outside would look a little nicer but inside is beautiful.

Much room for improvement 3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

The food is well-prepared, there is no argument about that. But this place has been open for almost a year now, and they have yet to work out their service issues. Like a previous reviewer, it was a while before we received water. We had to tell the hostess that we still haven't been greeted by our server, and she had to find another waiter to assist us. The waiter's behavior was amiable, but the food took much too long to prepare. When we kindly asked where our food was, our waiter told us that they were slammed and that the large parties currently in the restaurant (who had yet to order and arrived 30 minutes after us) were tying up the staff...but I don't understand what that has to do with the kitchen. It is very disappointing because the food is fantastic, but it seems like they still haven't worked out their service issues from when they first opened.

Pros: Good food
Cons: Shoddy service, bad booths

Has potential but needs to work out some issues 2 Star Rating - Wouldn't recommend

Since I'm all for more good Italian restaurants in Austin, I really wanted to like Gypsy. I had read a good review about it and so decided to try it out with a couple of friends. We were greeted warmly by the hostess, and seated promptly. Then we proceeded to wait a while before receiving some water. Next we waited another good stretch before our server took note of our presence and came over. Our server was friendly enough (he also made a great wine recommendation), but he was quite slow, and our water glasses remained empty for long periods of time. Oddly enough, he took our drink and salad/appetizer orders but not our entree orders. So when our salads came, we had to rearrange the menus that were still on the table to make room. I shared a jalapeno bread & balsamic vinaigrette salad with a friend, and the salad was delicious! Unfortunately the entrees were hit-or-miss. I got the veal saltimbocca, which was tasty and cooked just right. My 2 friends ordered the special of the night, a grilled fish and couscous plate; unfortunately, both the couscous and the fish were barely edible due to excessive amounts of salt. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he commented that it was the second time that night he'd heard it! So I have to give this place 2 starts for 1) oversalting the food and, 2) being told about it and still continuing to serve it as is to other people. Based on my veal entree and salad, I think this place has potential, but it needs to work out the service and cooking issues if it is to become a great Italian restaurant.

what a surprise... 5 Star Rating - World class

i had tried this place once for an appetizer which was average...i wondered if the place would make it honestly...but i returned recently as an evening's surprise, and i just want to say it was fantastic!! i can't remember having a better filet in recent years...and i love to try new places...the filet was a little small sizewise, so the server brought my plate with additional appetizers added just to make up for it. the wine suggestions were perfect, and the service couldn't have been better...i rarely rave about a restaurant as i suppose i'm a little picky...but you should really try gypsy, the filet, the salmon...everything i had was superb...and there was parking available to boot...

Pros: food, service, ambiance
Cons: possibly parking on a busy night
