I am a contractor who has built many Bloomtown gardens over the past five years. I have found Darcy extremely professional, courteous, and thoroughly original in her approach to garden/exterior space design. Her sense of scale and proportion allow her to create hardscape design which completely enhance the outdoor space while avoiding the everpresent pitfalls of 'overdesign'. In addition, Darcy is always open to ideas during the process that might enhance the end result.
Darcy brings a refreshingly new approach to planting a landscape. Over the past 15 years I have seen countless planting plans obviously drawn up in a room with no windows and flourescent lighting. Darcy's approach is to literally bring her nursery to the job site and create. I have always thought of it as one's back yard as 'her canvas' and the plants the paint. I have watched her move plants around the space until the balance of color, structure, and texture is just right.
Darcy's approach might be slightly outside the box but the result speaks for itself, truly singular unique gardens that age like fine wine.
Darcy Daniels is an extremely talented landscape designer. I have had the chance to work with her and see several of her projects over the past 5 years. Her work speaks for itself! I continue to be blown away by the creative and beautiful solutions she comes up with for her clients. She does an excellent job analyzing a space and producing a design that will emphasize flow and function in a unique and attractive way. Her plant knowledge is vast, and she has an eye for laying out plants to provide year round interest and beauty. I have learned so much from Darcy and highly recommend her!
Darcy Daniels of Bloomtown Garden Design created a truly incredible backyard space for our family of 5 to use in all but the most foul of Portland's weather. After analyzing the natural shape of our yard and house, she developed a complementary set of garden "rooms" that seamlessly expand the flow of the indoor and outdoor elements of our home. Darcy also interviewed us about our gardening style, and recommended (and delivered!) a set of plants that thrive in the microclimates of our yard, and that are lovely companions to boot. After our experience with the garden design, we've been regular visitors to Bloomtown Nursery, where the staff have helped us design key parts of our garden and made available various lovely, unique plants that fit those spaces. Bloomtown offers a full spectrum of services and is exceptionally customer-focused and friendly.
We hired Darcy to re-do our front landscape. After months of bad communication, we finally got our plans. She is very bad at communicating what she is thinking and since we had never worked with a landscape designer, figured she was just one of those scattered-brain "creative types." At our initial meeting, "which was not a free consultation"- she saw our yard and asked us what we wanted and budget. She gave us questionnaire, had us sign an contract for projected hours to come up with a plan and asked us to measure in detail our yard for her use. She received the questionnaire, then asked us to come to her nursery to review what she had come up with. The funny thing is her paper was blank except one plant (last minute sketch). We discussed the plants "she" had available- not a whole lot we liked. At the next meeting she assumed our contract was changed and we were going to have her come over and layout plants-the only problem was, we had no idea what plants she had, because we never got the plant "plan"...she assumed we were going to just take whatever she had laying around her nursery. I wonder if she did this with The Chinese Garden? Since we're young, she assumed we were naive. I told her I wanted the plan we paid for...she didn't have one. That's weird, I thought that's what we had paid for! So, days later, after having to ask for it, we got the plan. The plan seems pretty good, but now that I've contact her asking a simple question like, "can you please give us a suggestion on how to start planting"- we haven't heard back from her (a month), now that she is paid in full. Since I told her we were going to "shop around" for prices instead of just buying from her, she has nothing to say to us. Needless to say, we won't be using her on our next home.
We hired Darcy Daniels to re-design our side yard for us. The space is an odd shape and is next to a busy residential street. We wanted what seemed the impossible; a living oasis without the noise from the street... She set up an appointment, measured the space, talked with us about what plants we would like to incorporate into the yard and what we wanted to use the space for. Later she brought over three designs, all of them were exciting and well thought out; a tough decision awaited us. She certainly surprised us by reworking the designs; giving us exactly what we wanted.
Darcy then brought in Pete Wilson (an excelent local stone mason) to build the hard scape structure of the space. The job lasted several weeks. Darcy was in charge and was constantly communicating with us and Pete Wilson. Because of her direct involvement there were no delays or problems.
Darcy's knowledge of plants is impressive, she designed our project using plants that would thrive under the conditions present at the site. She also considered the size requirements of each plant, bush and tree as they matured.
She provided a list of plants that would work well and ideas of where she would place them within the garden according to her design. This was a great feature; it enabled us to plant what we wanted, when we could afford it. Darcy located and delivered most of the plants right to the site (including the obscure and unusual).
This summer is the third year with our garden and we couldn't be happier; we have our oasis. Now we can't imagine our house without the side yard. It has become our pride and joy and we love to spend time there. Darcy made it possible, she is a great find! She is creative, connected to other professionals in the field, very knowledgable about plants, pleasant to work with and she really listens and cares about the customers' needs! My family and I have recommended her several times.
This is the business of Darcy Daniels, run primarily out of her house. She did a design for me in the early 2000's and I was very happy with it. I also attended one of the classes she runs at her house and I picked up quite a few useful tips that I've continued to use in my own gardening. Darcy knows her stuff.
