After a longish day at work last week, I wasn't entirely looking forward to getting a hair cut. I'm just a guy who wished it were something I could delegate. Put it this way: I let my hair grow far too long before even thinking about taking care of it.

This is changing thanks to Alyssa! While I'm accustomed to assistants washing my hair and massaging my neck, Alyssa did the whole thing herself and it definitely relaxed me. More importantly, she took the time to understand what I needed and was very clear with what she was doing. Needless to say I was incredibly impressed with her skill. I have extremely curly/frizzy hair that is damn near impossible to manage; I appreciate having sat with Alyssa who is obviously a brilliant talent. For a decade (whoa, I've gone to salons since I was 14!) I've either settled on a look that didn't feel right or got the hair cut that could only survive a week before needing a fixer-upper. Not anymore. I'm delighted to have already booked my next appointment with Alyssa (first time I've EVER scheduled an appointment on my way out of the salon).

One last thing: Alyssa's also the sweetest person. Talking with her made ignoring my blackberry buzzing every two minutes a breeze.

I went to Scott J recommended by two friends to see Alissa. She was wonderful, took her time and did a really thorough and beautiful job with my long hair. I could tell she really knows what she's doing and the proof is in my cut! She was friendly and receptive to my idea and gave me exactly what I was hoping for and more. I would highly recommend her and the salon!

Called for a last minute appointment and was able to see BRIDGET, best luck of my life. She was so funny and sweet. She matched my highlights perfectly and gave me a great easy cut. She also was honest and talked me out of some horrible bangs. THANK YOU!! I felt very taken care of due to the fact she didn't pass me off to anyone, instead doing everything for me herself!! I highly recommend her and will be seeing her again very soon!!! Bridget is the women to see!!!

I stumbled upon ALYSSA at this salon and she is the BEST. I am a retired high end hairstylist from Bergdof Goodman in the 70's and I know a great colorist as I was trained at BG. I have been to a ton of 57th Street shops for the past 30 years and she is the best. NO MORE 57th Street attitude anymore. I have gone to Tricomi, Cutler Salon, Licari, Pierre Michel etc and always come out miserable and crying and have spent hundreds. I have gone to ALYSSA now four times and each time she has been consistently fabulous. I am a natural blonde and at the Cutler Salon went red. Cutler Salon said it was too hard to go back to blonde. ALYSSA got me back one time and its stunning. The products are all natural and I AM SO THRILLED TO BE A BLONDE AGAIN!!!!! SHe is warm, engaging and a great listener. She also did dynamite hi-lights on my 86 year old MOM who looks and feels great.... DO NOT be lazy and head on to 114th street and Broadway and ask for ALyssa. Call first and make appt. I am SOOO THRILLED. You also get a hand masage while the color is processing. NO FANCY SCHMANCY salons anymore. WHy should I pay for their attitude and location? Today is THanksgiving and I just flatironed my hair and it looks great... She cut almost four inches off and and the cut and blowout were also great..... WHy shelp to salons and be so unhappy...... You can have great CHines food at Ollies on the block after your visit to Aveda here at 114th Street. I know it sounds like I have stock in the COmpany.. Hardly... I am an out of work gal but I just wanted to share my good news with my fellow NYC friends who do NOT want to break the bank and want a great LOOK.... They also do great men....So GOod luck and tell her RObin sent you!!! Tall RObin from the UES!!!!!!!!

This place is great! I showed up there because I live in the neighborhood, and was expecting an OK cut. Marci was AWESOME!!! She did exactly what I wanted, and when she wanted to take creative license she asked me first- and I'm so glad I trusted her instincts!! I have lived in NYC for 3 years and this is the best haircut I've gotten!! And for cheaper than I was quoted from their website!!

Usually I get my hair cut at the Aveda Lifestyle salon in Berlin (Germany), however, as I had to move to New York for several months, I was looking for a new stylist. I have Asian hair, i.e. very thick, heavy and straight. I also have a full bangs, which I really liked but which also gave me some trouble as it used to part in the middle and letting me look like a little child.
By coincidence I went to the Broadway salon to get a bangs trim and was so intrigued with Lorin's suggestion that I immediately got an appointment for the same day. It turned out to be a great experience! She cut my hair dry after using the iron to straighten it in order to cut it more precisely. My hair looks great and is just the way I like it: feeling like a full mane, yet not too heavy and straight (she cut layers to take the weight out of it).
Lorin, you're the best!

Was recommended to bridget by a fellow male co-worker, She was so cheerful when i first met her i knew it would be great! I have insanely curly hair and always have trouble managing it! After a few suggestion from bridget about the length and some layers, i got a wonderful shampoo from her assistant! Not only did she give me a wonderful and manageable cut, she showed me a couple easy styling tips! Not to mention a great curly conditioning balm/gel. She even offered a complimentary makeup cleanup since she had some extra time!!!! I was completely blown away by how wonderful everything was! I will 100% be going back to bridget!

I've had a lot of success at Aveda salons in the past, so I tried this one out to find a stylist I liked. It's really close to my work, so the location is convenient. However, after three failed attempts of a good haircut and service here, I'm never going back. The service is horrible.
I first went in for a bangs trim. When I came in, they charged me more than it listed on the website. When I pointed that out, the receptionist simply said, "Sorry. This is the price."
I went in for a full haircut a few months ago. I have very straight, easy-to-cut hair. It's probably the hardest thing to mess up, because I'm pretty low maintenance about it. She cut my layers really choppy and didn't blend them. She also cut my hair with a middle part, even though I told her that I part it on the side. She told me, "I find that I get a more even cut this way." That didn't make sense at all, because when she parted it to the side at the end, one side was significantly shorter than the other. I had to go to another salon to get them to fix it, and the guy asked me what was wrong with my uneven, choppy layers.
I went back a third time because I was in a time crunch and needed a bangs trim desperately. I called to see when would be a good time to come in. The lady on the phone told me that a certain stylist could see me at 5:30. I left work early to get to the salon on time and when I got there, the receptionists told me that they don't make appointments for bangs trims and they don't know why someone would have told me to come in at a specific time to see a specific person. I argued with they ended up getting me in after about 10 minutes, but they were so rude about it, that I would not recommend anyone to go there.
Salons should be a comfortable, welcoming and relaxing experience. Scott J is not the place to go.

For as long as I can remember I had been getting my hair done by the same woman in a salon in the city, she relocated and I was avoiding going to anyone else. A friend of mine who goes to Columbia recommended a salon by her school and told me that there was only one person i should go to. That person was Allie, she was excellent. She made me feel like I had been going there for a long time. I had a few complaints (split ends, dry hair) and she didn't make me feel embarrassed about it she just went straight for the solutions. She dyed my hair pitch black and cut it in these fabulous layers and the ends were perfect. I left the salon feeling beautiful and confident. It was the best way to start my day and my cut was done so well that I haven't had to get my ends cut for a few months. I can't wait to go back, Allie is the best thing that's happened to my hair in a long time. Great talent, great customer service, the best the Upper West Side has got to offer. Go to Allie!

I recently moved to the city, and was in a frantic rush to find a stylist. I know what you're thinking, but my hair is as thick as a horse's tail, and crazy nonetheless. It's wavy and unruly, as well as extremely difficult to do.

It was the perfect surprise when I came across LORIN at 114th. It was a wonderful experience. She suggested that I thin my hair out, and take the weight out in the back of it to prevent it from looking like a puffed out mushroom in the back of my head. I took her suggestions as she came off as a professional and knowledgeable stylist. I could also relate to her, and she genuinely seemed to be thinking of the best style for me. She cut my hair when it was wet and dry with extreme precision. I HAVE NEVER HAD A BETTER BLOWDRY in my life, either! My hair was so soft and weightless when she was done. I felt like a totally different person, and loved my new style. The blowdry lasted for four days. After I finally had to force myself to was my hair, I took Lorin's suggestion to dry it by styling my hair using my hands, then a round brush before finally straightening it. It worked! It was a miracle!!!! My style is something I can wear to work, but still feel stylish when going out in. I am very thankful to have met LORIN, and this is the least I could do to thank her for her expertise!

I highly recommend LORIN as a stylist if you'd like a hair cut you can feel great about!

I went to Scott J. several times as a Columbia student. The salon is incredibly crowded, noisy, and the staff is highly unprofessional. I only kept going back because it was convenient as a student. However, Paula, who cut my hair, would always take off much more hair than I had asked. She even wanted to give my round face with curly hair BANGS! Are you kidding?! She had no concept of a flattering cut and I always left with wet hair. The assistants who wash hair are rude, and they all smelled strongly of smoke. I would always get shampoo in my eyes, and they used cool water to wash my hair because they said otherwise their hands get too dry. The place is a total rip off, and I cannot believe now having moved on to better haircuts, that I ever even went to this Scott J. Furthermore, there is very little seating while you wait, and they are ALWAYS late. I think this Scott J. location is awful, and I would certainly not get another cut with Paula.

scott j's salon brings style uptown... from the moment you walk into the salon the friendly staff and chic atmosphere gives it the feel of a soho salon.... the stylists are on point, i was nervous about making a drastic color and cut change to my hair however my stylist bridget recomended a beautiful auburn color and cut my hair to compliment my face perfectly! bridget also suggested some amazing product to help my normally thin hair look volumious and kept the color fresh for way longer than it normally lasts..... bridget was amazing to work with she was funny and pretty

After having a terrible experience at the over rated Valery Joseph salon on the Upper East side. The owner Revi Roman was nasty and my hair was no better. I was reluctant to have my hair done again in the city but having just moved to New York I needed a steady place to go. A friend recommended Scott J and I was glad I went. Roberto did a great job on my highlights and cut. They came out better than ever and he was very good at soothing my nerves. The tea was also delicious and I thought the front desk staff was very nice. No nasty surprises just great hair and professional cordial service.

I got a $35 cut from Brittany, who was fine. I had to be vigilant about looking over the cut when she was finishing up because it was a little uneven in one section. Brittany was, however, quite genial and took the time to fix what I wanted. My cut turned out fine in the end. The shampoo and brief scalp massage were nice, and blowdrying is included with the $35. I would say that the junior stylists probably have fine, basic skills, but if you're looking for an advanced cut, maybe try a senior stylist or another salon. I'll definitely return in the future because I'm pretty cheap, easy to please, and my hair is not fussy.

She was wonderful!! really listened to how i style my hair and reccommended some GREAT easy styling tips! She not only cut my hair wet but went through it dry as well to enhance my cut! She also recommended a wonderful smoothing shampoo! She definitly took her time to ensure i enjoyed my experience... i will definitly be back to see her! Great price as well and the salon offers discounts for professionals in the area!

I've had mixed experiences here. Last year I had a stylist who was quite good, but she left, and of course never left a record of my color services. So the next person didn't know what we had done. The last time I had my haircut here (it was with a junior stylist) it was the only time I've left a salon looking worse than when I came it. It was just an awful cut. Roberto (a senior stylist) fixed it for me, and did a fantastic job. With him, I felt I was in the hands of a pro. He fixed the cut, pointing out gently where she had gone wrong.

So, go for Roberto.

I also one had a manicure here and it was terrible. She sort of slapped the polish on and it was bad. Expensive too. Finally, the front desk staff isn't so great. One girl, I don't know if she's the manager or what, but she's often there, seldom smiles and is not friendly at all.

I don't love it here, but it's a reasonable option for this neighborhood, and some stylists are very good.

I have a great woman who cuts my hair in the East Village and I went to Scott J because of the association with Aveda - and its close to home. BIG mistake. I left totally annoyed with really dumb looking hair! The guy did NOT look at my hair when it was dry - which is a major pet peeve (how can you style hair when you have no idea what it even looks like?!) When I told him what I wanted and what kind of a style I already have (which is really hard to do when your hair is soaking wet!) He just kind of looked at me like I was dumb and not making sense. Then I showed him a picture and he just blew me off. He cut my hair in about 7 minutes and just sort of smushed it around with his hands - didn't really style it or use any products. I walked out with hair that was flat and had no real shape. Seriously the combination of the rushed, careless service, the condescending attitude and the utterly disapointing results just put me in a foul mood! NEVER AGAIN.

Pros: At least I didn't pay too much

Cons: Everything

.

My stylist paid little or no heed to my requests, was dismissively rude and completely mangled a not terribly difficult men's cut. I will not be returning.

...but regardless, this salon is a great place to escape the typical scary salon "holier than thou" atmosphere so common in NYC. Everyone is very real and very chill, and happy to answer your questions... and I've never had Aveda products shoved down my throat, although stylists are happy to recommend solutions to your problems. I've had highlights (Christian is the BEST!!!), cuts (Randy has done wonders for my male friends), manicures, pedicures, waxing and facials at Scott J and I've always been happy. It's expensive, but so is everything in this city -- save up, it's worth it.

Pros: sweet staff, accomodating (time), wide range of service

.

Although their staff looks young and hip, and they are willing to accommodate walk-ins, their knowledge of salon styling for more sophisticated clients is limited.

They are more into pushing hair care products than satisfying the customer's needs

Spa services are reasonable and comfortable. Relaxing environment for unwinding.

Wonderful stylists, great products -- Aveda -- and the best for the price.

Been here a few times - always get a decent/okay haircut. never anything special - but not too expensive either. i would NOT get highlights here - i've seen them mess up way too many times. make-up artist is really cool - and the lady that does waxing is great. also offers a discount to college students.
