I had a good time with the group of friends I went with, I think that was the highlight of my night. The shrimp tempura rolls were pretty good, I've had better but they were definitely not average I will say that. The service was okay, it

I've been to Sashi 5 times now, and every time I go there, the service has been great, the atmosphere is chic, the food is delicious and fresh as well as beautifully presented. And Chef Makoto personally comes out to see if the patrons are happy and satisfied.

I've read some of the negative reviews and it seems like
Sashi is extremely busy and packed at night, especially on weekends, so it must be really difficult to accommodate the huge crowd. I walked by Sashi on one Friday night, and saw an enviable assemblage of young, gorgeous people packed in the bar area and the patio.
I usually go there on the weekdays for lunch, so I feel like I get personal attention and there's no worry about having to wait a long time to be seated or be served.
I even learned how to eat sushi properly from the chef, who served fresh sushi, freshly grated wasabi, and delightful conversation. Uni is so fresh that it melts in your mouth and although I was disappointed that they didn't have amaebi the other day, I am satisfied in knowing that they only serve fresh sushi.

Also, the desserts are whimsical, delectable and makes your taste buds do some thinking because it's not just ordinary ice cream or something you might be familiar with. They are presented in such an enchanting way that you'd want to take pictures of them before daintily spooning them and tasting their exquisite flavors.

I rarely write a review about a restaurant. It either needs to be an amazing experience or completely horrible. This was completely horrible.

My boyfriend and I had a reservation at Sashi in Manhattan Beach for 8:45PM. It was pointless to make a reservation. The hostesses could not handle the volume of people coming into the restaurant and bar. The flow of business was too overwhelming for them that evening.

We were seated shortly after the 9:15PM party arrived and escorted to a table on the patio that was not cleared. When it was cleaned and set, I asked the heater be turned on. The hostess told me she would "take care of it right now." In the same breath, she turned and walked back to the front of the restaurant.

It took 15 minutes to get attention from the wait staff and glasses of water. We took the rare opportunity of actually having a server at our table to order dinner. We asked to start with Edamame 2 Ways, Spicy Rock Shrimp Tempura Rolls, Shiro Maguro Sushi and Syake Sushi. Our main course would be shared, Spicy Miso Chilean Sea Bass.

I again asked the heater be turned on. I was told ?it would be taken care of right away.? No one came. The edamame and shrimp tempura rolls never came as well. After another 30 minutes our Chilean Sea Bass was brought out and served to the table beside us. We immediately corrected the order, and it was delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the flavors were amazing.

For the third time, I asked the heater be turned on. I would not let the busboy walk away this time, and it was finally taken care of. With some heat and delicious sea bass, we were hoping the evening would pick up.

Another 20 minutes went by, and we were served an entr?e for the table beside us. Again, the patrons corrected the order. Shortly after our salmon and albacore sushi were brought out. By this point my boyfriend was furious. With the restaurant prices and hype, an explanation for the complete lack of service was at least due. Instead, we look down 3 tables and our waiter is flirting with a table of women and pouring them champagne.

I called our waiter to the table and asked for our check. I told him I was not sure if they were in the process of making our rolls, but 2 hours for Rock Shrimp Tempura Rolls is ridiculous. He apologized and went to get our bill.

When presenting us with the bill he said ?want you to know we comped the rolls and edamame this evening.? I explained that is fantastic, but the rolls and edamame were never even brought to the table. I wasn?t paying for them either way.

I am a foodie! I love to cook, eat and experience new restaurants and flavors. Stick to my area on a regular basis- Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City. Venture out to West Hollywood and Hollywood. Will never come down to the South Bay again!

The sea bass was delicious, but the service is so poor here it completely overshadows. The hostesses and wait staff were an unorganized mess. The left hand doesn?t know what the right is doing. The manager needs to learn how to efficiently run this place on a busy night. They haven?t worked that out yet.

Atmosphere was pleasant,,the food was ok. I had the Sashi Roll, way too salty. Too much sauce and spicy mayo. Kobe Beef with chiso roll was disapointing. Too much flavors and not enough flavor. They should get rid of this dish. I would only recommend this place for drinks and not the food.

it was all about Hollywood and trendy dining. Like some other person wrote in his review, I'm honestly thinking that most of these reviews were written by the owner/staff & its friends....

My entire experience (ever since making my reservation) was about their trendy & with attitude style. My friends (group of 6) made reservations and we were seated almost a good hour after the actual reservation time.

Beautiful restaurant, but sashi does not have the staff, sushi chef, technique and appearance to go with it.

I honestly want my money back.
Service was sooooo slow (and after having to wait an hour w/ reservation was a joke), none of us were even hungy, but we still ordered some food to see what people were woo-hoo-ing about..

Terrible mistake. Few orders of sushi and drinks and the bill came out to more than $200.

Next time, I know to give my business to other sushi places in MB.

Don't bother if you want good authentic sushi.

The place is nicely decorated, hip and trendy with the beautiful Manhattan Beach crowd. I would recommend it for a date or for some drinks after work.

Sushi is very average. We ordered almost everything on the menu, nothing stood out as good, just plain average. Tables are very close to one another, felt like we were eating with the couple next to us. Service was a little slow although the server was friendly.

Not a cheap place, and you are definitely not paying for the quality of food.

My son & I visited yesterday as we waited for a dental appt upstairs. We LOVE sushi and wanted to try it. I have to say that the sushi, itself, was GREAT! And the prices were average for sushi in the area.

The atmosphere was GREAT -- my son lounged on the couches up front & read his book while we ordered -- then wanted to stay there to eat! (The outdoor area looks amazingly comfy, too.) The interior was, obviously, lovingly done.

The appetizer portion of the meal is where felt let-down: the amuse bouche (steamed buns with curry sauce for dipping) and miso soup. First of all, I like BOLD flavors, so when I saw curry sauce I was excited. . .but this curry sauce was bland. Also, the miso soup was bland with HUGE chunks of silky but tasteless tofu. I LOVE miso soup for the taste of the miso. . .but this was just tofu with a bit of bland juice around it.

I'll have to disagree with Sunny. Sure, Octopus gives you the big "California Beach" welcome when you walk in, but the quality of the sushi is incomparable. If you want a basic tekka maki roll, then the other MB sushi places are fine but if you're looking for an amazing sushi experience, Sashi is the place to go.

If you are going to enjoy the ambience for an upscale Hollywood-ish bar, stop by. Otherwise, if you are looking for a quiet dinner, good quality, minus attitude and good service, there are many more sushi bars in Manhattan Beach. The ambience was nice, but everything seemed very overpriced, the food was par, and the service was below par. Yeah, good bar scene, but that was about it. Very business like restaurant. Didn't feel the human touch or the warm welcome like the other Japanese owned sushi bars in Manhattan Beach like Octopus. If you want cheap rolls and rowdy scene, go to Fusion. Don't pay for what you don't get.

This was one of the most happening sushi/sake lounges I've seen. The lounge was packed and loud. I went for the "bento box dessert" which has samples of delicious Japanese desserts all placed in a cute bento box. Also, they have a very extensive sake list which is difficult to find in the West side. Pricey but the ambiance it worth it.

We didn't have to go to Hollywood and BH to get some amazing sushi - it was just less than mile from our home in Manhattan Beach. Me and my friend went out for drinks on a random Tuesday and we ended up choosing Sashi. We sat in the Lounge area and this (stunning) server with an accent gave us great recommendations such as the robatas, metlox roll and rice crispy tuna. She also had an expert recommend the best sake for us. After that, we sat at the sushi bar and luckily enough we sat right in front of Makoto ? the sushi chef. He suggested the most high-quality sushi I have ever had, so fresh and the presentation was amazing. Good Job Sashi! I will be back again!

My friend and I went in for drinks on a late Sunday afternoon. It was so relaxing I could have stayed all night. The music and the ambiance were great. It was good service, but it didn't feel over bearing. The drinks were thoughtful and well executed. The two drinks that we ordered (VeeV Cooler and La Poire Fleur) were SO GOOD!!! I will definetely be back to try the food. I am excited that this Sushi + Sake restaurant is in the area.

they say new york has the best sushi and i am one not easily impressed. sashi was just simply amazing. the service was attentive, and one of the highlights of the meal: you have to try the metlox roll. YUM. everything was really fantastic and love the selection of sakes. we had the winter cabin in the snow sake and it was a welcome change to the usual sake lists. the jidori spring rolls were also a nice surprise & gets your mouth watering for the next bite. i can't wait for my friends to visit here so i can take them out to this fabulous place & hang out like we used to in manhattan. loved it! thanks for an amazing time and celebration of our first dinner out here on the west coast.

My first impression upon entering Sashi was its rich ambiance and friendly, attractive staff. I especially liked the hot pink glow in the bar that reflected beautifully off of the elegant array of Sake bottles -- very impressive! Speaking of Sake, Sashi is a Sake lovers paradise with so many to choose from, that they have a special Sake expert available for any questions you might have. She (the expert), chose the perfect Sake for us, light and crisp and compatible with our food.

The food was excellent, with delicate flavors and lovely presentations. The fish dishes are wonderful, very fresh and good either raw or cooked. I also had the steak which was so tender with just the right flavor; a good contrast to all of the fish dishes that I tried. Our desserts were inventive, with light, interesting flavors such as the soy cheesecake and the green tea ice-cream. It was nice to have the lighter desserts that complemented the subtle flavors of the food.

Sashi was a great food experience with a friendly, attentive staff, and a welcoming atmosphere. I would highly recommend it!

Great scene, great food, good service, amazing ambience. We ate out on the patio which was very comfortable, even on a chilly nite. Our service was quick, the product knowledge has a ways to go, but I would expect that with a new and extensive menu. Sushi was great, but don't skip the robata grill or the desserts. I've been to most reputable sushi bars in LA, this is the best package.

Took some friends to check out the new Manhattan Beach night life offerings this weekend. Liked it! Sashi is going to be part of the regular mix for us.

Sophisticated crowd. Plenty of couples out for the evening. Some groups. The bar had some familiar local faces and regular "players" we see at Shade and Towne scoping the crowd for singles. Planned to, but never made it to Twelve + Highland which is nearby. In fact, "12" exploded on the scene and got lots of attention, but is turning out just to be a cathouse. We hope Sashi keeps it's reputation and refinement and doesn't become a flash in the pan.

Regarding the food, it is similar to Petros and Upper Manhattan in quality. It's not open for lunch. The dinner menu is great. But to be frank, although it's a more sophisticated atmosphere, the service was a bit slow (as you could expect because it's not been open long). Despite the slowness, the staff was really friendly and helpful.

We'll be back. Good job Sashi.

We finally gave in and drove down to meet our Manhattan Beach friends for dinner last night. They have been talking about their new sushi restaurant for a couple of weeks and we figured we owed it to them after all of our Katsuya dinners in Brentwood. We were very impressed. The sushi and robata was excellent. We tried some great sake that no one had ever had before. But the stand out dish was the hamachi toban-yaki (sp?). Amazing! The restaurant was packed which made for great people watching but didn't help the speed of service. All in all, we had a great experience and will come back.

i am a huge blogger and i wanted to tell everyone about my dinner tonight at Sashi. After reading the last review I think that person accidently walked into Fusion Sushi which is right next door . There was four of us and everyone thought the food was amazing. The look and feel was great. I travel for a living and eat at some of the better places in the world, so when I say that Sashi nailed it, believe it!! Great food, great scene. The only owner we met bought our entire group a bottle of sake because we were seated 30 minutes late. If anything the staff was nice and apologetic. Bottom line Sashi was excellent Not sure who Leonard is but if he was anything like our waiter or the hostess he rocks. Check it out.

We went to Sashi the first week it opened and we thought the food was great but the service was at best bad. They FIXED it!! We had a great time. The food was amazing, service was perfect and we really enjoyed our night. Good work on correcting the service. We love Sashi and will be back.

I think the employees or friends of the owners are writing the good reviews. My group's experience was so bad that I can't imagine other people found this place good. We got seated at 9:30pm for an 8:30pm reservation. There is no reason the staff can't say politely to a party (after meal has been placed on the table), "We have several parties waiting for a table. So that I can give you great service quickly, may I take your dessert or after drink order now?". This lets people know other parties are waiting without sounding rude. When we finally did get seated, the food came out one at a time, sporadically, & the wait staff called most of the dishes by something other than the name on the menu, so no one knew if it was something they had ordered. All but 2 dishes were salty (not-edible-salty!). We sent dishes back, but when most other dishes came out salty too, we just gave up complaining. Dinner took 2.5 hrs -- the kitchen was so backed up, it took THAT LONG to get 8 people fed. It ruined our night. The time to get seated & finish dinner made it too late for us to get in to any local dance places (it was a special night -- a birthday for someone in our party.) The only good thing I can say was that Leonard (?, the manager) was the only employee on top of things. He gave us a free drink due to another bad service issue I'm not going to mention in this review. However, re: other employees, there was so much chaos & disorganization I was embarrassed for them. And then, when one of the owners came to our table to get our feedback, his response was a pout & this comment: "Well, please try us again.". (Excuse me? What incentive do we have to come back when there are so many other great places nearby?) Unless they get their act together, sadly, I do not see this plce staying open for more than a yr. I may come back for a standard drink (not for their toilet cleaner specialties) & the beautiful scene, but, why would I when I can get that at Petros or Shade or Towne? -k

Pros: Beautiful people, beuatiful scene

Cons: everything else - except Leonard

My husband and I (and everyone else in town) have long been anticipating the opening of Sashi and were NOT disappointed. We celebrated our anniversary there last weekend and were worried about a new place being overwhelmed on the holiday weekend but the service was fantastic, attentive enough and always timely without ever interrupting or seeming overbearing. The food was TO DIE FOR, every dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. The ten hour pork and jidori chicken cigars are both must-tries. Also, take advantage of the sake sommelier for pairings, I never knew I could enjoy sake so much, there truly is something for every palate! I haven't even mentioned the ambience, fun, romantic, chic, pulled off perfectly without trying too hard. We have traveled the world and are so excited to have such fine cuisine and a superb overall experience right here in our own backyard.

Pros: Food, service, ambience, parking . . .

Cons: Why couldn't Sashi have opened years ago?!?!?

Ok it's here. Best sushi I have had hands down in the South Bay. My wife and I went there on Sunday night and had a great time. Between the decor, food, and service we give this place "Two Thumbs Up". My wife is not a big sushi person but the menu had so many non sushi items to chose from that were delicious. We saw our friends there who said that some of their dishes were similar to Katsuya's but better. We stayed after our meal and hung out in their lounge which was a great place to people watch. All in all we will be back very soon. Sashi is our new spot.

but it just wasn't that good.
8 of my friends and I went there for my birthday. The place looks nice - hip and trendy. Nice lighting and quite the scene. It was little too noisy to really talk so I was happy when we finally got a table to eat at. By the way, we had reservations and still didn't get seated for an hour, but I realize that sometimes happens. BUT, what makes this review not so very good is the fact that almost every dish we had was salty or just not that good, including several of the specialty drinks. One of the drinks tasted like turpentine - in fact, we would have different members of our party take a sip and the flash the camera of them to get their response. If nothing, we had fun with that!

The orders took a long time (one dish took almost 2 hours to get and we simply had to cancel it because dinner was done.) There was a lot of confusion with the orders and the bill of $500+ . We were charged for everything and then some. The waiter pointed out at the bottom of the bill is one general category for credit with some ambiguous credit of $48 so we really couldn't tell what was double charged and what was credited. Granted the restaurant just opened, but their operation was so disorganized and the food was not very good. What made matters worse is that one of the owners told me that he would come by and give me a birthday shot....which he didn't. When he finally approached the table at midnight (yes, that's when we finally were wrapping it up!), we told him all the "problems" that we encountered, and he didn't do anything to try to win our business back on another occasion other than to just say...please come back. THAT was pretty disappointing....makes me NOT want to rush back ANYTIME soon.

Pros: Nice setting, great neighborhood

Cons: Poor service, poor food, poor managment

I really enjoyed Sashi, and think that it is a great addition to Manhattan Beach. The place is hip and trendy, and the food is well presented. It's a little pricey , but the quality of the food is excellent, and they did just open, so I think that once they work out a few kinks it will be fine!

Oh gimme a break! The sushi was soso and the eel was terrible! dry and not tasty at all. Server had no clue about sushi names in Japanese. People watching was good, especially since the only table available was in the bar area. Two beers and a plate of sushi and the bill was $75. Not good value. Example- Toro for $14 (two pieces)?
Might as well go to Octopus if you are thinking of this place...

Finally, this place puts Manhattan Beach on the culinary map. This is one of the best places for sushi that I've had in L.A., much less the South Bay. The chef comes from the Iron Chef circle, so the fish is really fresh and the robata grill and hot entrees are also excellent.

The environment reminds me a lot of Nobu, and the level and type of food are up to par. Recommended food items include: the spicy tuna on crispy rice, the chicken meatball and cod skewers from the robata grill, and the tuna, tuna, salmon roll. I can't wait to go back to try other menu items since everything looked really good.

Definitely a welcome addition to otherwise pretty bland restaurant offerings in Manhattan Beach. Of note, they are not open for lunch.

Pros: Excellent sushi at reasonable prices; Some of the best sushi I've had in L.A.

Cons: The fact that it took so long for a restaurant like this to come to Manhattan Beach

We went to dinner there on the second night they were open, we were very happy with the sushi and the service, the drink menu was extensive and really like the atmosphere. I would reccomend the spicy tuna on crispy rice, and the sangria was fab! About time we have a high end yummy sushi place in MB!

Finally: A high end Japanese restaurant in the South Bay. The space, staff, and food is absolutely beautiful. I'm guessing that people will compare Sashi to Nobu, but the menu is broader and food was better. Their Sake Lounge is a great place for drinks and appetizers. If you go, be sure to engage the sake sommelier, she made some great chilled sake recommendations. Must have dishes: Spicy Miso Chilean Sea Bass and 10-Hour Pork Kukuni.
