Great, inexpensive gym
by Mae L.
Clean gym with a nice staff and the prices are stupid-low! I wish they offered more class times but are building two new rooms so hopefully that's coming soon...All-in-all, nothing really to complain about.

Terrible and dishonest - avoid!
by Dave S.
They are completely dishonest and tried to double charge me for my membership. I had to call with old credit card receipts to prove I'd paid and even then they didn't believe me! Avoid at all costs!

UNFIT GYM
by Justice S.
GYM SEEKERS BEWARE! I've belonged to 8 gyms in my life and this one has the most atrocious business practices of any! They will hit your credit card with random charges and the only way to get your money back is to dispute the charges with your credit card company and change your account number. My identity was stolen from this gym too, since the records with every members social security and credit card number is available to the entire, constantly-rotating staff. They will tell you the papers are kept in a locking filing cabinet. NOT TRUE according to fired staff!! They fired their best trainers, likely because they can't even afford to pay their heating bill. The heat hasn't worked for over 4 months. When you ask why, you are told by Carl, (a new manager that has single-handedly wrecked this gym) that they have people working on it. LIES. LIES. LIES. I quit this gym because I moved and they hit my card with over a $100 charge. You wont find this fee in the fine print of your contract. Since enough people have complained, there is a lawsuit pending, so dont expect this gym to be around much longer. If you are joining a gym for a healthier lifestyle and to reduce stress, don't join this gym..it will only add further stress. Dont believe Ann G. Ive negotiated 8 contracts with no problems. This review is a plant by that control freak Carl trying to save his job! To the incapable owner of this gym..DONT QUIT YOUR DAY JOB!

it started out as a great gym
by jane s.
I loved city fitness when it first opened. They had great classes, everyone who worked there was really nice and friendly. They had fun fitness contests all the time. But in the last six months it has really gone downhill. Management and staff changed, there are still a few good people there, like JP, Jen (hoop-dance instructor) and Chaka. But for the most part the attitude is disappointing. They used to have some really great bikes with a virtual reality ride on them, they mysteriously disappeared. The prices keep changing, going up etc etc. Classes get canceled constantly. I'm sure they've burned just about every good instructor/trainer in town, by letting them go.The instructors are inconsistent. They now have some kind of martial arts school that's slowly taking over the entire gym. I only go there because of the convenient location. I wish they could make it like it used to be.

Great independent gym
by Ann G.
I was surprised and saddened by the 2 reviews I just read on here. I find it humorous that these 2 reviewers want to bash the gym just because they are intimidated and don't have the know-how to negotiate a decent gym membership deal. City Fitness is a great independent gym, that opened during the start of this economic recession and has still found a way to slowly build business because the staff is friendly and the space is comfortable. I'm not sure which members of the staff the 2 reviewers on here were speaking with, but the owner, head desk manager and personal trainers are awesome and go out of their way to be available. The other members of the gym are not pretentious and are friendly, the vibe is great and I love this gym.

worse gym ever
by Zara H.
I completely agree with the previous review. The management team of the facility is focused on only one thing: get as much money from you as possible. My membership was changed without notification, costing me over a hundred dollar!. And I was told that they were still doing me a favor. Geez, thanks guys. As for their sales force, completely incompetent. Laura rambles at 5000 words/min and by the time you start to understand what the facility has to offer, she starts shoving numbers in your face. And no offense, but my 10 year old is better at using a calculator than she is. Besides pressuring the costumer into buying whatever package and altering memberships without proper explanation, I can say that this has been the most repulsive business ethic I have ever seen. The only good thing about the gym is their machines. The equipment on the other hand, is often taken up, the classrooms are too small, have no ventilation, and the classes' atmosphere is not friendly at all. I've even been to a class where the instructor had NO IDEA what we were doing. Just telling different people to do different exercise, not counting reps with them, and then yelling mockeries when we collapsed b/c we had just been doing right lunges for about 30 reps with no interruptions.DO NOT let the smiles and modern equipment of this gym fool you. The management truly is what ruins the entire experience. Too bad, the facility would be great if staffed in a friendlier, more ethical and costumer-focused manner.

I'M BAAACCCCK!
by JZinNL
OK...I was a former member who left the gym when my trainer departed...I'm the type of fitness client that needs someone to hold me accountable and focused for my time in the gym. I'm easily distracted.
I rejoined about 2 months ago (September '09) when I learned of the $19.99 promotion (which allows access to the gym and it's machines. Classes, tanning, training are all add-ons. I believe yoga is also an additinal cost) that was being offered and thought I'd minimally use the gym for cardio since I already had a gym membership in CC...but then took a class instructed by Dwayne T. and haven't looked back!! Have only taken the boot camp classes taught by Dwayne and it's a serious, no-nonsense workout. I leave in a pool of sweat, exhusted, but feeling AMAZING. SInce then, I cancelled my other gym membership and am solely working out here.
The gym has changed alot since I first worked out here 18 months ago. The "contract" others complain about has been altered since I am significantly paying less than I did previously. The juice bar is now operating-although I have not used it.
I agree with others, the gym is huge, lots of space to work out and I've never had to wait for a machine or piece of cardio equipment ever. Flat screens on the cardio equipment are also a plus. Front desk staff are friendly. Locker room is clean.
I've also begun working out one-on-one with Dwayne and after working out with three others trainers in the city, Dwayne is what I've been looking for: a true professional, on-time, educated, dedicated and focused on YOU and YOUR fitness goals. His workouts are INTENSE, pushing you to your limit, changing each session to prevent repetition and keeping you thinking as to what will come next. Just like his classes, it's a no-nonsense workout. As long as Dwayne is there, I am there.
My only con is that free parking in their lot is limited during peak times-meter parking is always available (when I've been there) on the street.
I say give it a try...
Pros: Fanastic Trainer, Good Classes, Machine Availability
Cons: Limited Free Parking During Peak Periods

Awesome local gym
by avm5027
City Fitness is an awesome gym. The staff is very friendly and it is definitely a family oriented gym. All of the equipment is new, each peice of cardio equipment has a personal flat screen tv and they have great classes. The juice/protein bar is a great plus too. The prices are cheap! Also, tanning (which is a big plus for me) is only 10.00 a month. They open at 5am and close at 11pm so there are no constraints on when I can go. It's overall a great enviornment. The classes are fabulous and I have never waited in line for equipment. Great place!
Pros: juice bar, experienced trainers, classes, hours, low prices

Great local gym with most of the amenities that you need!
by WYSPgirl
Just an all around great gym to work out in. Great classes of all kinds to take (which is always a huge plus!!). Freindly staff (definitely important!). The members/crowd is good too (not pompus, annoying, or totally full of themselves).
In a nut shell, like I said, an all around good gym!

Don't bother
by fishtowner
When I first joined this gym in March, I really liked it. However, since then, I've realized how dirty the gym is, how the equipment goes missing, how when things break, they don't get fixed, how understaffed it is, how the employees don't seem to know what's going on, and how this gym has not lived up to my expectations. I'm glad I am not locked into a contract because I'm going to start looking for another gym. Oh, I've also heard people have been getting billed incorrectly for their membership. I can't see how this place is going to survive much longer.
Pros: parking lot, cheap meters, no need to sign contract
Cons: closes early on the weekends, dirty, broken/missing equipment

Best Gym in Philadelphia
by thoichcoebndcueb9
City Fitness has a great feel inside. They have murals of Philadelphia all over the place it's very cool. Their is plenty of equipment and they offer many different things for members to get involved in not just fitness programs. I am excited for the juice bar to open that will be a great addition. The best thing about City Fitness is they have a 16 week program that gets results not like the other gyms where you get one maybe two sessions and your on your own. They have a real structured program that really makes you feel comfortable and get started on the right track. Def my favorite gym in Philly. If your looking for a place to workout def check it out you won't regret it!!!!!!!!.
Pros: Open layout good staff cool cardio equipment and great programs
Cons: Need more locations

City Fitness Hottest Fitness Club Anywhere
by lanafalana
I love going to City Fitness. The facility is clean and has a tremendous amount of space. Murals of Phila inside and out make it look as nice as it is. My bf is more experienced with fitness than I and is very particular about equipment. He is also a member, I used to only like classes, but now I am strength training and taking yoga. I have never looked or felt better in my life thanks to their customized SPICE program. I have lost 2 sizes!!!!
When I call I am able to get ahold of Laura, who signed me up. She and and my trainer Brie have helped me reach all of my goals and acheive what I never dreamed possible. It's not at all like 1-800- CORP GYM. Even the Sixer's dancers practice there so I figure I'm in good company! I luv City Fitness! Thanks guys!!!
Pros: Parking, Yoga and Pilates, not Intimidating, no wait for equipment, babysitting, PRICE
