Spitzer's Corner

★★★★☆
Spitzers Corner in the Lower East Side preserves a bit of the history of the exciting neighborhood where they are located. The name Spitzers Corner comes from Spitzers Dress Shop, which occupied the space for over 50 years. Today, the dress shop has been transformed into a unique and popular gastropub in Manhattans cool and hip Lower East Side. The New York design firm Asfour Guzy (of Blue Ribbon fame) has created a hip, chalet-like space ideal for getting together with friends for casual drinks and fine pub dining. The space is comprised of two large open-air rooms built using all reclaimed woodpickle barrel wood for the walls, oak for the floors and douglas fir for the tables and seats. Great place for a weekend brunch, with all kinds of reasonably priced tasty itemsEggs Benedict, Blackberry Pancakes, Brioche French Toast, Smoked Salmon and more. If you're not yet a New York City brunch fanatic, you will be after one or two weekend trips here.

So many beers on tap, this place won't let any of you beer connoisseurs down. The nice thing is the food and the atmosphere are good too. Warning, the space is totally open so it gets loud in here, especially on weekends.

I love this place! They have so many beers on tap, it would take you a few DAYS to get through beer tastings. I used to live up the block, so stopping by Spitzer's was a weekly to-do. They have a great lunch menu and great location for

So when you come along this neighborhood you will notice a lot of character everywhere. From the Yuppies and Hipsters that live here and interact trying to be cool. To the graffiti on the walls. And the local bars and restaurants that make LES what it is.

This is a TRUE NY bar, where they have bench seats, open patio to where you can sit and socialize, and a small area. Love the area, and love this spot

Met a group of friends at this place last night. Just after walking in this short brown haired waitress spills an entire beer down the front of my girlfriend's dress while rushing by her. What's worse? The waitress yells at my girlfriend and says it her fault! While this incredibly rude person be raids my girlfriend with a finger in her face, I comment on how ridiculous the whole situation is and 2 minutes later the manager is asking me to leave. The manager obviously had no idea what had just happened and as my group of friends are trying to reason with him, the same waitress spills another beer at the bar! The manager has no interest in our side of the story and our entire group has to leave. Worst bar experience I've had in six years while living in NYC! Never going to any bar or restaurant associated with this group ever again.

Always have a great time here. Great space with long wooden tables, and big open windows. Great beer on tap, good wine list, and good food.

All staff are attentive and helpful.
Unfortunately because NYC still has Blue Laws we couldn't have mimosas/bellinis before noon on Sunday, but the food is excellent! For later, they have a huge selection of both bottled and draft beers, including gluten-free brands. We've been there more than once, and the quality has been consistently great.

The lunch and dinner menu looks good, too.

Read any of the other reviews, and you can view the exploits of its grand beer selection and almost gourmet bar food. However, located in the heart of the East Village, this spot is guaranteed to be packed on any given night (especially weekends). Recently discovered, by me at least, is the back bar. Through a hallway that seems to only lead to the kitchen and maybe a bathroom, Spitzer??s opens up. Almost the same size of the front area, the back has a full bar and plenty of extra seating. No longer a need to be scared away by five deep line at the front bar. Go check the back before you move on.

Overall I like this place. It's in a good location and the beer selection is top notch. For some reason though the people there always seem to have such an attitude. Not the staff but the crowd, which seems strange since the communal tables invite people to chat. Oh well. Good place to get a buzz regardless.

This place has the best mac & cheeze. I'm a beer girl and the beer here is great. Only downside is that if you want to stretch after a meal there isn't a lot of room as its more like a restaurant.

Pros: Best Mac & Cheeze, great beer, food is above average

Cons: gets tight with crowds, not enough hang out space

This is a great place to grab a few beers and hang with friends. The outdoor seating is great and the prices are good too! It's a great place to socialize and hang. Lots of fun in the summer. Lots of beer varieties too! I really enjoyed it. It a busy place, so it maybe hard to snag seating. Fun place for happy hour as well.

Great bar, amazing burgers, great atmosphere, great beer selection. However, everyone I have been with is unanimous that the stamp system (were you are id'ed at the door and get a stamp but then must reveal the requisite number of stamped patrons for each alcoholic beverage purchased EVERYTIME throughout the night) must go. It is lame, it is underage dance party stuff. I can go around the corner to another bar and be treated like an adult - get a new system or become regarded as the training wheels bar. It would be a shame, all the other ingredients are there.

Spitzer's corner is a great place to go with friends for some beers and burgers. The front of the place offers communal tables, whereas the back offers a more private setting. Order a bucket of pickles and some beers while you wait for your food and you will be all set. The burgers are quite good, and the option of a fried egg really adds tons of flavor. I'll definitely go back.

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! This place...I dont know what the hell this other guy is talking about. Ive never once had a bad experience at Spitzers and I come here constantly. The manager and the bartenders are always so sweet and accommodating. I have friends of a variety of colors and everyone has been treated wonderfully. They are super strict with their ID policy but its also their job. I bartend in New York so I get it. Spitzers is truly a gem!

great beer selection, one of the best in town, though I passed by it just last week and it appears that a certain city department has close it down. There were yellow notes on the windows that read the establishment had been closed. too bad as it was a great hang out for beers after work.

Spitzer's is a very bar in a fun area. Great selection of beers on tap and bottle, nice minimalist decor. Too bad I will avoid it on weekend nights for the following reasons: 1. It is overrun by the young upper east side crowd..lots of baseball hats and cute young preppy girls (wait a minute, that's a good thng...). And they'll ALL trying to get a drink! It's like they all got on a bus at Dorian's and it dropped them off on Rivington. What a nightmare. 2. Because of supposed underage drinking citations they've received the poor bartender has to see an i.d. for ever beer she/he gives out. Never mind that you opened a tab and have been previously served several beers for your friends...she still has to see who she's serving. The back bar did not have someone working back there. They did have a server taking orders back there though...he explained that b/c of the citations and having two exits in the back room the bartender has to card everybody. The girl working the bar last friday did her best but was understandably exasperated at points. She needs to pour drinks, not hasslbe people over id's. Let her do her job. So, dear owners of Spitzers, here'es how to fix this place: Please put a bouncer or two at the front door checking id's. Get another bouncer at the back doors. OR, just lock on back door and get a bouncer for the remaining open door. And get a bartender at the back bar! It'll hopefully draw the crowd to the back instead of the crap-show at the front bar. Yeah, extra staff will cost more $$ but I bet you make it up when the bartender pours more beers as opposed to me leaving and spending my $$ elsewhere! I'd love to come back, but under the right conditions:) Respectfully yours...

I've been to Spitzer's Corner twice and I think I agree with some of the previous reviews that the service can be hit-or-miss. My first time there 2 months ago was an excellent experience. We drank great beer, ate delicious food, and enjoyed the pleasant ambience that this restaurant/bar provides. The service was okay that time, given the bustling late-night crowd. But last night was a different experience: our waiter was unattentive, bouncing back and forth between the front and back areas, and rarely checked on us. We repeatedly sat with empty beer glasses for 15 minutes at a time, with nary a server in sight. 70 minutes after we ordered our food (and it still had not come), I finally got up to speak with the manager. At least he was responsive and listened to our gripes. After discussing the unacceptable service issues, we were treated great the rest of the night and our food came out within 10 minutes (a supposed miscommunication with our waiter caused our food to be delayed... still, that didn't account for the lack of service with our drinks). It seems like the service has declined in the past month or two -- other people who left reviews said similar things... that service used to be good, but lately it's just not up to par. What did give me a little reassurance was that the manager responded positively to our complaints and took care of us after we spoke with him. He was professional and understood our frustration, and he offered to knock something off our bill as a courtesy -- as someone with restaurant experience, I know that he handled things right. Our food ended up being delicious, and a new server was constantly checking on us, refilling our glasses frequently. That's how a restaurant should be run, and even though the service was appalling at first, I am giving Spitzer's Corner 3 stars and I will likely return -- the beer selection is fantastic ($6-$8) and I just can't get enough of the grilled cheese w/ tomato chutney.

The atmosphere was great! Everyone was laid-back and friendly. I had the mac & cheese, sliders, and soft shell crab. All were delicious. The beer menu is great too!
Oh and my waiter was gorgeous(dark hair, tattoo on right arm, & super nice). :)

I'm one of those femmes in the rough who prefer beer over wine or syrupy cocktails, so naturally Spitzer's wins points with me for its damn good beer selection. They've got everything from Unibroue to Leffe to Maredsous to Rogue -- sigh. Heaven. They win even more points with me for that new menu by Wayne Nish. Super simple but super smart food -- great for pairing with microbrews. We tried the pork belly sandwich (great), the roasted chicken (fantastic), and the mac n cheese (super rich with bacon). We had to diet for a week afterwards but it was well worth it. Plus, the price point is GREAT. You can leave full and satisfied and tipsy for about $30.

Service is always friendly but can get erratic when it's super-busy. Fortunately, the vibe is so lively you don't even notice. If you want to have a more intimate conversation, there's a back room where you can cozy up with a date or a group of friends. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood!

Firstly, i live very local to this establishment and have given it several chances, each time being more of a joke than the last. Last nights effort was the final straw.

I had a friend from overseas over so decided to keep it local, when we first walked in there was only 1 bar tender working, thus explaining the dirty bar top. (When i say dirty, i mean remnants of food, not drink) Having waited a good 5 minutes to get served, we were finally served along with another gentleman who was also having problems ordering his drinks. The bartenders attitude was that of a 10 year old, no customer service at all, extremely arrogant and just very childish.
When we got our drinks we managed to find one of the very few spaces available which happened to be at the bar. (The spacial design of this venue is appalling) This is where i noticed the cleanliness of the place, the bar tender seemed to summarize when cleaning, missing obvious bits of food, like salad leafs.
When we ordered our second round, i was amazed to hear the amount was different to the first round by a couple of bucks, cheaper too, when i queried this, i was given some gesture by way of the bar tender just shrugging at me, what does this mean?
When i was talking to my associate, i noticed the bar tender pouring a glass of Prosecco into a fluted glass, he splashed some of it into a pint of beer, this amused him somewhat as he just laughed, the gentleman who was buying them didn't see it luckily. His whole mannerism about serving seemed to leave several other patrons annoyed, he took the order and turned round rather quickly to sort out, not making eye contact either to see if they wanted something else, leaving the customer waiting to order any additional drinks, his awareness was very poor.

I thought this would have been a good addition to the neighborhood, but it seems its left to its own devices and its a shambles. I can see this place being re-branded into something else very soon due to its poor name.

Let me start by saying the beer list is fantastic. This is the reason to go to this place. It has long bench seating, so you?re sitting very close to your neighbors, but it didn?t feel uncomfortable. As for food, the menu is rather limited. I can only comment on the hangar steak which was actually very good (much to my surprise). I saw a number of people order burgers that looked good as well. They also make fresh donuts for dessert which were great.

As to the negative reviews here regarding seating, I can totally see where they?re coming from. I was lucky enough to wait 5 minutes with my friend, but I can see how it could turn into a mess on a busy night. It?s a great neighborhood place and I would certainly recommend going here for some pints and decent food.

It?s a great neighborhood place and I would certainly recommend going here for some pints and decent food.

Pros: Ton of great beers on tap, Fun atmosphere

Cons: Seating is iffy, bartenders and servers seemed a bit clueless

I went to Spitzer's Corner with a friend because we heard the beer selection was really good, and planned to just have a couple beers there before going to dinner elsewhere. After a couple of Belgian beers each, we started to get comfy there and just decided to stay for dinner. We ordered the burger and the grilled cheese, and were pleasantly surprised. To be honest, our expectations were low because this place has the feel of a beer pub. But the burger was really good and the fries were thick and crispy. The grilled cheese was also really tasty. It had a little twist to it--a tomato relish mixed in with the cheese. I definitely plan on going back to try some other items on the menu that caught my eye like the mussels and the homemade donuts.

Pros: beers/food

Cons: gets a little crowded at the communal tables

I cannot comment on any aspect of the food or drinks, since service was unavailable. Barely greeted at door, then met with a baffled look as though we had walked into some stranger's apartment. Was seated, in a sea of staten island etc. trash, not handed a menu for a couple of minutes, and spent ten minutes watching wait-staff walk around serving others without a hint of acknowledgment. So we left. And nobody seemed to notice. Not a good way to support a restaurant with so much competition in the area. BTW, headed down to another real neghborhood bar for a predictably positive experience!

Pros: The door heading out

Cons: Service? What service/bridge-tunnel

I went to Spitzer's as part of a group of 10 people. we were seated on benches in the front and told that a nearby long table would be ours soon, and we could order our food in the meantime. well, that table became available after about 30 minutes, and we started to move over... only to be shooed away by a hostess and told that the table was for another party -- of 5 people!! about 3 minutes later a table that was perfectly suitable for 5 opened up, but they'd already seated this group at a place that could've seated twice as many people. I pointed this out to our server and she said she would go see what was going on, but then she never came back.

About 20 minutes later another section of the long table became available and was promptly labeled with a "reserved" sign -- then 2 (yes, 2) people sat down there.

Long story short: our group of 10, there for dinner, NEVER got a table. We all ate our dinner seated in the waiting area. I'm sure the food would've tasted a lot better (and we would've spent more money and lingered longer) had we actually been given a decent place to eat. APPALLING SERVICE!!

And oh yeah: c4mee, lesgal and mofo12 are obviously logins the owners have created. Shame on you!!

Pros: food was decent

Cons: staff has no idea how to seat parties; inattentive waitstaff

Very solid. The burger was excellent - despite the review of some guy bashing it. That makes no sense whatsoever, it is VERY GOOD. The space is well used and pretty cool as the windows open up to the busy street - though can get crowded so come early. Beer selection is great too. Go for the bag of doughnuts to finish. Nice way to close.

Beer list is pretty large. I was weird when i ordered the same beer three times and they came in three different size glasses all for the same price. The food was ok, def not cheap. The best was the shrimp they were nice and big. My gf burger was ok not that great.

The three reviews below, LESGAL, C4MEE MOFO12 are three glowing reivews from people that also glowingly reviewed FAT BABY on the same day. This reeks of the owner pumping up his own place, which really annoys me on citysearch. As such i completly disregard them and you should too. Apparently they are also trying to push the maytag blue cheese, by all three of them mentioning it specifically.

Read the first review and this one if you want the truth. The food is ok but the reason you go here is for the beer. When you are in the les eat somwhere else, unless you just want to snack.

I have been to Spitzer's Corner (love the nod to the retired dress shop that was previously in the space) many times with many of my friends and family- for good reason. I was there two night ago and I ate the best burger I have ever had (amazing ground short rib, perfect bun from sullivan street bakery- had to ask!-carmelized onions, Gus' pickles & a touch of Maytag Blue). My fave used to be Corner Bistro's, but my allegience has shifted. Homemade fries were crispy and brown and amazing. A friend had the mussels and they were outstanding and unique with chorizio and peppers- had a tasty kick to them. Do I need to talk about the beer? Best list in the city, cool descriptions. Great times, love watching the worldgo by out of those huge windows.

Pros: 40 beers on Tap!, Atmoshphere, Burger!, people watching

Cons: They close windows at 12- NYC law?

defnitely the best burger ive had. period. i ordred it with the maytag-most places slop on way too much and it overpowers the flavor of the burger. ala spotted pig.

I went to Spitzer's Corner with my niece recently, she finished culinary school a couple of years ago and has been around food ever since.

She thought the burger was the best she ever had, I put it in my top 3 list.
The stake was very good as well, and the cured meat plate was a great appetizer.
Needless to say, there were no leftovers (except some fries, they are very generous with them).

I'm not a beer drinker, but even I was impressed by the selection and had a few tastes.

The design is really unique as well, great space management, I love the long shared tables, they help create a warm atmosphere.
You can't help but notice their windows, when retracted, they give you the feeling you're seating outside, but you don't have to deal with the crowd walking the streets.

I've been there a few times since, I highly recommend it.

Pros: Beer, Atmosphere, Food, Shared Tables, Crowd

Cons: No beer sampler.

Spitzer's corner has an amazing selection of beers which were served ice cold through clean lines. That's the good part.

The bad part is that their food is absolutley atrocious. They charge $3/ea for gritty, subpar, cheap oysters that are meant to be served at frat bars on $1 oyster night.

I ordered the hamburger medium rare which came out VERY RARE and completely cold with cold fries. Their vegetable "small plates" are expensive, absolutley laughable, and beyond pitiful.

Eat somewhere else in the LES - there's no reason to eat bad food in that neighborhood.

Finally a place on the Lower East Side where I can meet up with a large group of people, actually sit down and not be crammed in some smelly dank bar. This place is awesome, the beer list is absurd, and the fact that the food is good too is an added bonus. The Window seating could possible be the best people watching ever!
