Had dinner at the Mt. Vernon at the Ship last night (10/15/2009). The food was over cooked, not properly seasoned and quality of the product sub-par. The wait staff inexperienced and at times down right rude. Our party of 6 arrived promptly for our 6:30 reservation, ordered drinks, apps and entry. We should have known there was an issue here when our drinks were served several at a time rather than the waitress carrying them all on one tray. About 45 minutes into this ordeal and not a single app served the waitress stops by our table to apologize and inform us that they are busy and the kitchen is backed. I looked around and saw a half empty dinning room and when I questioned the waitress she responded with they dropped a tray. When we did not accept this the manager (at least we think that is who it was) stopped by and also apologized and bought the table a round of drinks. Shortly there after one our appetizers was brought to our table and after 5-10 minutes we had to stop the waitress and remind her that there was another that had yet to be served. It was approximately another hour before our entrees were served. Those that ordered the baked stuff lobster found it full of breadcrumbs and what lobster was there was over cooked, the salmon was a thin cut ( I could purchase a better cut myself at Stop & Shop) and extremely over cooked and everyone's vegetables were cold. Those that ordered steak tips had requested med-rare and both arrived medium but said that were okay. The waitress never came by to ask if everything was okay or if we needed anything. When the table was finally cleared she never asked if we wished coffee and/or desert. Again we waited and had to stop and ask another waitress to find ours as we needed the bill. After delivering the bill she disappeared and again had to sit and wait to pay the bill. While waiting around for our server I started to notice how many meals were being returned to the kitchen. It was this and the poor dining experience that prompted me to provide my feedback to the manager before leaving and his only response was that he apologized and sent us a round of drinks. I will never return to the Mt. Vernon and have told all my friends to stay far away from this establishment. There are so many other better choices along route 1. I don't expect this one to last long unless they change their staff top to bottom!

A few years ago while travelling from Brunswick, ME to Springfield my mother and I stopped at The Ship for dinner. It was great.
This last July (2008) I was maiking the same trip and thought that I would revisit for lunch.
The menu had chagnged, but the food, atmosphere, and service were just as great. They even went somewhat out of the way to serve a dinner meal for lunch.
On my next trip to the Greater Boston area, I will go out of my wat to return!

Pros: Great italian venue

Cons: Upstairs

This was a different dining experience-The outside of the restaurant looks like a ship. The menu was large primarily of seafood which is fine with me -It's my favorite. We had crab cakes and mussels which were really good. The mussels were really spicy. Then we had the seafood casserole which was a bit disappointing-a little too salty and could have had more seafood in it. It was fun but all in all I think I will pass on another dinner there.
