My husband and I went to brunch this past Sunday at Somnio's Cafe and we were absolutely amazed. We fell in love immediately and will be going back weekly from now on. They named the restaurant after the owners' dog, Somnio (awww!). Their food was superb and it was a BYOB (perfect for BYO mimosas). We really love their mission statement and reasoning behind the dishes they make. They want to create a neighbor-friendly place neighbors to eat, chat, and dine together and get to know one another. All of their dishes are made from local organic ingredients. We found out that they compost and recycle nearly everything which made us really proud to eat there. They have great taste in music as well. I can't understand why anyone would write a bad review of this place. The service was excellent... couldn't have been better. My husband and I almost considered keeping it a little secret to ourselves so that we could enjoy not having to wait in a huge line when everyone finds out about how amazing this little place is. I guess our morals got the best of us and now we are spreading the news about this wonderful little place.

Pros: Locally grown ingredients, consciencious eating ethics, byob

Really cute little place. The selection is small but the food is really good. We love that they use natural and organic ingredients and have both meat and veggie options. It's a little pricey though.

I really don't get what's supposed to be so great about this place. Wehn I went there we got really bad service, it took forever to get out food, our order was wrong, and the food was just average at best.
The place looks pretty cool, and people seem to want to like it, maybe because it has a cool ambience, but this restaurant falls down in every area that really matters.
Pretentious and poorly run with mediocre food.

Somnio's Cafe on South First Street has somehow gotten endorsements from both the Austin-American Statesman and the Austin Chronicle. Well, I'd like to set the record straight. They must have known these "food critics" were coming or, they bribed them for their reviews. The food was average at best and the service was atrocious. With so few items on their menu to choose from, one might wonder how an order could get screwed up. Well, we didn't have to wonder long, our server was clueless and so was whoever was in the kitchen. As I mentioned, the food itself was average if not a bit below par. The prices however, reflect those of a restaurant with much better prepared food and service to match. This is still a new restaurant but, there are so many better places to go that deserved their published reviews. My advice is to try Somnio's Cafe at your own risk or better yet, just skip it entirely.

Pros: It's closed on Sunday and Monday.

Cons: It's open Tuesday thru Saturday.

I had the pan fried shitake dumplings and they were awesome. I ordered the red tea, and that was so good it didn't even need sweetner or anything. For the main course I had the sissy salad with chicken, and although I would have liked a bit more lettuce/greens it was delicious and satisfying. The chicken was very tasty and the apples in the salad were crisp and refreshing.

I also tried my dad's orange pork tacos and they were very good. They might be a little sweet for me, but with the delicious salsa that came with it and a little salt, I'm sure they would be great. The chips that came with them were good too.

My aunt made her own rice bowl with spinach, bok choi (sp) and mango. Then she chose the chicken and the green curry sauce. I really liked her dish and would probably order that next time.

Overall it was a great experience. The food was very healthy and the portions were reasonable, though not huge, like a lot of people are used to in most restaurants. However, that's not what this place is about. It's about high quality, healthy food that tastes great. That always goes well in my book. When we got there at noon, we were the only table there. When we left there was about 10 other people there. The service, from the manager, was good, friendly, and efficient.

The manager also mentioned that they just started serving brunch on the weekends and they have bloody mary and mimosa setups for the BYOB crowd. They also have music out back, but I'm not sure when. I imaging the weekends would be it.

This place is very comfortable, and a nice place to go for a date. The setting is quite intimate, but if you're a crowd person, I do not suggest this place.
