What is the alternative? So mikes auction is a mess and the poor horses are the ones to suffer, right?
Until someone comes up with a better solution for the welfare of these Guys, May I suggest that someone
bring some hay for them when they come? how hard would it be to donate a bale of hay for a good cause?
If I go there I will make a point to do this..I know it will make a very small contribution , but stll might make a dent!

Mikes Auction is made up of the crap the surrounding community brings... Shame on those people for starving and neglecting their horse for so long. It should be those you are angry at, not the auction. Everyone likes to complain about those "poor" horses being sent to the "killers", but those who complain wont be the one to foot the bill to rehab, medicate, and take care of the animal. The "killer" buyers are doing the animals a favor, they are taking them out of the misery their horrible owner out them through. Its a sad fact of life: too many animals in the world for them all to have good homes. So perhaps the focus should be on the loser owners bringing the skinny emaciated horses to the auction, and not the auction. The auction is only helping those horses get away from the horrible life they have had.

I used to attend this auction on a regular basis when I lived nearby. I never bought a horse from there but did buy tack on several occasions. I do not like the way Mike conducts the bidding. I bought an item once, bidding $5 on it. When the gavel came down, he announced my number as being the winner but he said the price was $7.50. It was not. There is no room for those kinds of tactics in this business. The last time I was there in the fall of 07, the place was still the same. The horses don't have food unless the owner provides it. All the stalls had water for the horses. The condition of the horses ranged from being in OK shape to being horribly emaciated. Seems that Mike's workers are not picky about which horses they accept. There are kill buyers at ALL the auctions so these horses don't stand a better chance of being bought by kill buyers any more than at any other auction in the vicinity. I remember once there was an Arabian mare with a broken leg in one of the pens. Some women called the cops and other authorities. The cops came out and told Mike he had better not try to sell that mare. The women and myself talked to one of the kill buyers (a woman) and asked her to please ask all the kill buyers present NOT to buy this horse; that we wanted to buy her just to put her down. She came back a few minutes later and said it was taken care of, if the horse went thru the auction, we would be sure to get her. I heard that later on she was euthanized right there in the pen. This truly is a place where "Buyer Beware" needs to be taken seriously.

Do NOT send your horse to auction at Mikes unless you don't care if the local kill buyer buys it and sends the horse to slaughter. Mikes Auction accepts emaciated horses, drugged horses that appear to be sound when run through the auction. They leave horses standing in pens for hours without food, filthy water or no water at all.
