In Short
Opened more than 75 years ago, this airy family-owned diner still attracts groups and solos on the Upper East Side. The green exterior paint makes it easy to spot, and the natural theme continues inside with light wood floors and potted plants. As a wall of old New York scenes hints at the history, waiters in the signature-color shirts focus on the present and scramble to serve egg dishes, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, and hearty entrees.

Key Points

  • Scrumptious Weekend Brunch
  • Large Takeout menu
  • Quality Food around the clock

Great NYC Restaurant

by Tim P.

If you are looking for a quick bite to eat, look no further than this historic old restaurant. They have a great brunch and a vast take-out menu for those that don't feel like going out in the city. With their reasonable prices and great food, I would highly recommend trying this joint out.

Been around forever

by Fanny K. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 292

Years ago I remember watching "Broadway Joe Namath" eating here as he lived in the neighborhood then. It's a staple for all a diner has to offer. Decent food, very typical, always edible meals at not outrageous prices for the upper east side.

I wanted to eat in but not cook so I ordered from the Green Kitchen. The food came fast and it was still hot.

A Cut Above a Diner

by hungrycouple

We wandered in one evening when we were too tired to cook and were pleasantly surprised. Both the service and food were a notch above typical diner offerings. Entrees are extremely generous and tasty, rival some of those at "nicer" restaurants and come with large salads and a bread basket. We went back the following week and were treated like regulars, with the waiter brining us complimentary appetizers while we perused the menu. The dessert offerings are surprisingly poor for a diner but there are plenty of bakeries nearby to pick up something on the way home. Overall, this place offers a pleasant, tasty meal and a great value.

Good everything

by MikeyDisco

My father took me here with my family and we had a blast. Despite there being a line, we only waited a few minutes to be seated by a window :-) away from the crying baby on the other side of the restaurant. I kind of felt bad for the people behind us though who actually were seated next to crying baby. I do not think their review will be too bad though, the baby was removed after it regurgitated it's apple sauce just 5 minutes after they were seated. Anyway, our low priced breakfast came warm and just as ordered. We tipped very well and will certainly be back again. In fact, just that next week, my girlfriend and I enjoyed a quiet breakfast again by the window where the crying baby was the week before. Lucky for us, that family left the baby at home.

Pros: great food, service, and atmosphere

Cons: crying babies

Good food, Clean

by EddieDiamondo

I was there just the other evening after about 20 years without a visit! May I say the food was great, waiter pleasant and accomodating. The whole experience was great compared to the Chelsea diners I have been frequenting. I am very picky and I check for everything ,stains on glasses, dirty forks ,etc. and this was good! No complaints. I don't know why I've been away so long. I will be returning. The bathroom should be a little roomier.

Bad service!

by drlisadds

I came in with a friend for lunch. The place was pretty much empty. We were seated somewhere we didn't want to sit, in-between 2 chatty tables, so we moved, and the waiter made a very unpleasant unsatisfied face in our direction. After a few minutes we started ordering. I asked to have greens instead of fries with my sandwich. He said " we don't do that", meanwhile some sandwiches on the list actually came with mixed greens. So I said "charge me extra if you need to, I don't want fries, I want mixed greens" he refused again, saying that the chef in the back will not do that no matter what. So we got up and left. They lost business, for no reason.

Wonderful find!

by uesgirlie

This place calls itself a diner, and is open 24/7, but is much nicer than your stock diner. It has a European feel. Their menu is extensive like any diner, but everything is actually good. They have gourmet grilled cheeses and make desserts in-house. Dinner entrees are also very good, and they have a steady brunch crowd. Prices are very reasonable. The walls are mostly floor to ceiling windows, which they open on nice days, so you almost feel like you are sitting outside. If you live in the neighborhood, they are very quick on delivery.

Pros: Extensive and good menu, reasonable prices

Cons: So-so service

Rude service, mediocre food

by nycrn

Finally went to this restaurant on a recommendation from a friend- she said they had a great deal for brunch. Well, you get what you pay for...First of all, they had a line of people waiting to be seated and no organized list, so people were getting seated out of order, and the servers had no idea when someone was seated in their section. So people who were seated after us, had their order taken first. When we finally had our waitress come to our table, she didn't look at us or say a word. Nothing, not even a "can I take your order" I understand if you're busy, but a simple- "sorry 'bout the wait, but thanks for your patience" makes the difference between a good and a bad tip. Our food took forever to come out, and it tasted ok, but by then we were so miffed about the service, it was hard to enjoy the food. They were out of several kinds of pie- which was part of the brunch deal! Maybe if we came when the place was empty then service would have been better, but not ever going back there for brunch again

Pros: Open and airy decor

Cons: service, service, service!!!

Great service, great food and decor A+

by juliep508

If you're looking for a place to dine but you don't want to put a whole in your pocket... Green Kitchen is the place you want to go. The prices are more than reasonable considering it's the Upper East Side. I had a fabulous dinner and the service was up to par. Usually you give up on good service and food once you pick a place that's affordable but not here. I definitely will and have recommended this place to everyone I know.
I must say, I don't like the idea of an open area with windows as walls to a restaurant but I really enjoyed it at Green Kitchen. I'm planning on bringing some friends to dine with me real soon.
You should too!

Pros: 2 thumbs up!

Cons: Couldn't find not even one con

watch out for the broken shard of glass in your water

by temashana

I was excited to come back to the Green Kitchen. I frequented this place when I used to stay out to the early morning.
I had pancakes for brunch, which were v. good. The only big issue I have was that when they refilled my water glass. Thankfully my friend notices a huge shard of glass in there. We told the manager and he grabbed the glass and walked off. I did not get another glass of water, or even any sort of apology.
The other thing was my friend ordered toast with her omlet and it never came.

Pros: food was ok

Cons: bad service, rude manager/owner

good french toast

by coog78

I don't understand the reviews about small portions or expensive prices.....I'm from Texas (used to big portions) and the portions at Green Kitchen are big and ridiculously cheap. Of course, I only ate here for breakfast, which is the most difficult meal to make poorly. I would go back for breakfast, but based on the other reviews I am skeptical about any other time. I was a bit confused that the restaurant was the only one on the block that stepped out and landed on the sidewalk.

Pros: good breakfast, location

Cons: service

Poor Food, Horrible Service

by nynpink

I tried Green Kitchen when it first reopened in July and the fried chicken my friend ordered was not cooked all the way through - and then they even tried to put it on our check after we sent it back and didn't want it.
Then it closed for a few months and I gave it one more chance for breakfast since the sign outside said "new management". It was the worst service and the pancakes tasted like they were made from biscuit. We were basically ignored and had to flag down a manager just to get the coffee that was ordered and then the food that was forgotten to be brought to us. And no one apologized. Even when we asked for the check no one could find it or our waiter and we had to repeat the whole order so they could write it up. Never Again!!!!

Thoroughly disappointing

by memswim

I think many people who live around the Green Kitchen used to frequent it. In fact, my family and I used to go every sunday for breakfast, it was ALWAYS frequented..at any time of the day. We visited the newly renovated restaurant this past weekend with high hopes. What we got was very poor service from a terribly unfriendly waitress who didn't know the menu well and a very limiting selection of food. We miss the friendly faces of the staff and the diner like food that we used to get. The old saying goes true in this case: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Pros: clean environment

Cons: everything else

"New" Green Kitchen is a bust

by bwshar

I've lived in this neighborohood for 15 years and for the longest time,
Green Kitchen was the best standard diner, for hangover breakfast/ burgers/ late night snacks etc.
About 9 months ago it closed down for renovations and completely remodeled.
Now reopened, the new look is OK but if you can actually get beyond the abominable service (waited 10 minutes for a table 11 AM Sunday with at least 5 tables available, )the food is just lousy. Their omelettes are 1/4 the size of any other establisment around, and home fries aren't even available.
Maybe you're trying to be something else?
By the way, the prices are about 40% more expensive.
I know this must have been a huge effort guys, but I'll take the old Green Kitchen back in a heartbeat.
Thoroughly disappointing.

Slow...small breakfast portions...overpriced

by katzone3

Green Kitchen has recently been renovated and the new decor is rather pleasant. However, the diner definitely DOES NOT HAVE their act together (at least not yet). They are short staffed. Their menu is limited, they serve miniscule omelettes that may be suitable for a child (with what seems like a teaspoon of stuffing) with a salad (have to pay even more for fries) for $10- which was poorly washed and there were bits of soil all over it!! Toast wasnt toasted, tea was served without any teaspoons, after asking the waiter, I got one spoon and had to share it w my boyfriend as the staff didnt deem it necessary to bring a spoon for EACH person at the table).

Bottom line - after waiting around, and still feeling hungry - we went to our favorite diner 3 blocks up.

Pros: Decor

Cons: Service, Portion size, Wait time

Not the greatest - but convenient

Not the best food - but it has all the diner stand-bys.

Open 24 hours - and cheap - which are both good.

Good food, good service, great place late at night. This place appears to be a family run joint that offers a little bit of everything. I recommend it to anyone living in the area.

Pros: Food, Hours
