LOVE THIS PLACE! I have no idea what that guy below is talking about - probably didn't fit in to the more family friendly-environment. Just as well. I recently used my Living Social deal and tried out this gym. I was instantly greeted and the woman up front was so excited to show me around...it made me feel at home. I ended up joining as a member. Love the atmosphere where everyone is so pleasant...nice change from the gym I came from (although I won't mention any names)!

RUN THE OTHER WAY FAST!!! Potential customers: Stay far away from this place. The owners are more like swindlers without ethics or morals than the family oriented people they pretend to be. MONEY is their only motivator - they're unyeilding with no sense of loyalty to customers. charge you for everything, next they will charge for a sip of water. The place is way too expensive ( no pool, jacuzzi, sauna) and there is NO VIBE in the place - its NOT FUN to train there and the classes stink. I took two of them and was very disappointed in the instructors who were UNIT and not at all knowledgeable! In the weight area, youre usually working out often working out alone - people have finally caught on and are staying away from these rip-offs and joining other clubs. The personal trainers are a JOKE! Novices at best and Im not sure that they are all certified instructors. The so called DIR of personal training has NO professionalism whatsoever, showing up late for appts if he showss up at all. By far the most dispicable aspect of this place is its owners whose only interest is PROFIT, they are dishonest, have no loyalty to members The place is open 3 yrs now and is still empty. What does that tell you?

Business Response:

Hi Jesse, We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you have experienced and always take member feedback seriously. We pride ourselves on being a family run and family oriented environment. We agree that we are different than the overly packed gyms out there today that offer low prices with no amenities, unfriendly service or unavailable machines. We hope that you find the club that suits you best because your health is what matters most. Sincerely, Doug

I highly recommend this club to everyone, especially anyone with a family. It is a family run club that goes the extra mile with its members. I have two children that use the daycare and the staff in the daycare is so friendly and experienced. The biggest problem with the daycare is getting my children to leave. My children actually call the gym their gym and motivate my husband and I to go to the gym.
The club is very clean and not crowded. My husband and I utilize all the services the club has to offer. I focus on the classes which are great while my husband loves the cardio and free weight room. The staff is very helpful especially if we have any questions about the equipment or even our diet. There are flat screen TVs all around the club including all the cardio machines. They also have a juice bar with a mini restaurant that I eat at as well.
I am so happy I found an upscale state of the art club at such a reasonable price. My husband and I have been to many clubs over the years and there is no club like this one. If you are looking for a clean family oriented club with state of the art equipment, this is the club for you.

Hi Angela, We wanted to thank you for taking the time to write a review and we appreciate the kind words. We're happy that you enjoy the family friendly atmosphere and staff and look forward to seeing you again at the club. -Doug

This is an amazing club that truly focuses on the whole family. Anytime I have a question about anything, there is always someone there to help me. The place is immaculate and the equipment is all state of the art. When my wife went into the hospital they send her a get well card, what other place would do something like that? Recently my family and I moved and we unfortunately had to cancel our membership. Eventhough they were upset to see us go, they made it so easy to cancel our agreement. I have heard so many nightmare stories about gyms not letting you out of your agreements, but not at this club. I highly recommend this club to anyone and I truly hope that my family and I move back to the area so we can rejoin. I promise you will not be disappointed with this club!

Hi Brian, Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to review us. We are happy that you enjoyed your time here, even though you had to move away. We wish you and your family all the best! -Doug

I joined Strength and Fitness after moving to the area and looking to join a gym with classes, great equipment, and professional staff. At first, I found more than what I was looking for, my only dilemma was signing up for a year contract, since I was going to be leaving the state for work (country for that matter) for an indefinite amount of time before the end of the year and didn't want to be locked in. At the time I discussed the contract with the staff, I was informed that this would not be a problem, since I can just inform them that I was moving more than a certain amount of miles away from the location and therefore the contract would be nullified. Content that they would be able to work with me on this dilemma and hoping that I would be returning to the area, I eagerly signed up. When it was time for me to leave, I informed the gym, who told me that I would NOT be able to break the contract since I did not have "proof" that I was moving out of the country (a plane ticket and a lease for a different apartment was not sufficient enough proof) and would most likely be back before the end of my contract. I informed them that I most likely would not be returning to the area or even the state! I would however, be allowed to freeze my contract for $10 a month. I reluctantly agreed. They charged me the full amount, $60, not the $10 the first month. I called, they apologized and said they would just use the amount to cover the 6 months I would be gone. They charged me the following month. I called, they said it would be refunded. Upon returning, after the end of my contract, I called several times to cancel, since I lived too far to drive to cancel. Left several messages, no response, still getting charged. Finally, I was told to send in a letter informing to cancel my membership immediately. I did so, and have been charged, monthly, twice. I call, leave messages, even ask for the person who is on my contract, the owner/manager of the gym, who I would see and smile good morning to when I went to work out. He is not available to speak to me, apparently he doesn't "handle memberships," or so I am told. Needless to say, I am beyond frustrated and just plain mad as heck at their lack of professionalism and consideration. I was outright lied to and have been given the run around for months. Should I have known I would be spending so much time and money, I just would have joined retro fitness in Kennilworth, kept my membership and been able to visit other locations in the state (and have saved hundreds of dollars). I understand that there are rules and policies, however, their complete lack of consideration, and how no one is available to speak with me when I call, either morning or afternoon, and how they treat mattters related to memberships is completely unprofessional.

RUN THE OTHER WAY. Dont waste your money at this club - it is overpriced The owner tells you you are part of a family but then he nickle and dimes you . he cuts no breaks to law enforcement and trust me, an old acaquaintance, does not return favors extended to him in the past. They have unfair business practices and he does not honor his word. the owneer will never cut you a break - they make u pay for babysitting and to put your stuff in lockers. you can go to retro fintness or fit for life much cheaper.

Nancy, As a volunteer firefighter and the club owner I apologize if you feel that your experience was unfair. I wish that this would have been brought to my attention sooner and in person because I take this very seriously, if this is in fact true. It is not uncommon for cubs to provide additional services like day care for a small charge however our lockers are always free for members to use. We also encourage members to bring their own locks. It may be true that the other gyms are cheaper but you get what you pay for. We include amenities such as classes, which many other gyms may not. We also pride ourselves in being a family-friendly, clean environment where our members do not have to wait for machines which may be the case for some of the other gyms youβ??ve mentioned. I truly hope that you find the gym that suits you because health and happiness is what matters most. Thanks, Doug

I joined Strength and Fitness Club with apprehension because I never belonged to a gym before and I felt intimidated. My first workout was so comfortable. The staff welcomed me and made sure I was comfortable, if I had any questions or needed help with any of the equipment. They were friendly and very interested in what my goals were for fitness and helped me focus on those goals. The members at the club were friendly and I felt I had been at a gym for ever. I would highly recommend this gym to beginners, intermediate or advanced people because there is a niche for everyone. The place is spotless clean and I am already in my second month and I see big results and I look forward to working out every week. Thanks Strength and Fitness for making me feel great.

I had a serious weight problem and wanted to get into shape so I joined Strength and Fitness Club. They truly changed my life and made me feel so good about myself again. From the front desk personnel to the personal trainers, it is truly a friendly, spotless, fun place to work out. I recommend this gym to anyone who wants to get into shape and experience a professional, upscale facility.

Avoid this gym at all costs.

I should have researched first. Local ad sounded promising, and like other user mentioned they do not tell you price over phone. After some salesman swindling, they told me the rate is 74.95$ a month. Fount that a little steep compared to other famous gyms. They then told me $61 would be my discounted rate and I could try gym for a month. Reluctantly I agreed.
Figured I can try out for a month with no strings attached. Visited 3 times. They had one nice cardio machine with a ipod/iphone attachment that looked awesome. However plugging in my ipod froze the machine and somehow corrupted my ipod. iTunes restored it back to normal. Found the rest of the equipment mediocre for my taste at my "discounted" rate, resulting in my decision to not complete a year contract. After about 2weeks and couple of days, kindly told them the gym is not for me. After some initial questions the back and forth began. Reminded them about what they've told me, try out for a month with no commitment. They started throwing some contract jargon about a 30days notice and I asked how am I gonna write a 30days notice if I have a 30days tryout period? Where does the logic lay in that. Stormed out of there.
Few weeks later I received a notice of being sued for the entire year!!!! Shocked! Called them and told me I broke my contract, asked them how since they offered 30days for me to try out gym, contract free. They firmly responded if I have any questions contact their attorney and hanged up.
I feel cheated and lied too, how these people get away with this is murder.
Found a gym thats been popping up all over and its only 19.95 a month that fits my need. Venting with a member, she told me there has been many disgruntled people that has been deceived by Strength&Fitness. Avoid this place at all costs!
FYI, a gym should have their membership fee upfront and clear. Not making up prices, and different people offered different prices. They tell you one price, then quickly mention another when you seem displeased. This right here is common tactics, in reality they know the lowest they can go but anything to get more money out of you, unfair. It's a gym, not a used carsales dealership.

UPDATE: I just noticed the retaliation fraud positive comment from member below regarding naturas review. It is unethical for staff to do such review and attempt squash the review of another, and providing what seems to be a false testimonial.

Unfortunately, the information stated by Natura T. is completely false, which has already been proven. Please come visit our facility, and you can see for yourself that Strength N Fitness Club is a family-oriented, upscale fitness center with many services to offer!

Member testimonial from February 2010:

"Doug,

I would like to tell my story in hopes of helping other people. I'm 47 and in May of 2009 I was rushed to the hospital with chest pains. I had a heart catheterization and they found 2 arteries 100% blocked. They put two stints in and told me that I had to lose weight and improve my diet. At that point I moved up to New Jersey for 6 months to visit family. I began looking for fitness clubs, which I did not have a great deal of knowledge about. I walked into Strength and Fitness Club and right off the bat I felt like I was at home. I walked in and was greeted like I was a member of their family, Gail and Lynn were so helpfull.

I told Doug my story and he said we would start off slow with my diet and training to rebuild my heart. At that time my weight was 225lbs and my cholesterol was 240. 6 months later my weight is 160lbs and my cholesterol is 175 perfect. I lost 65 pounds and lowered my cholesterol 65 points. I went from a size 38 waist to a 32. I worked with Doug and his staff at the gym every week and I owe my new life to them. Now that I am back in Florida, most of my friends and family do not even recognize me.

My family and I want to thank you for all the time and effort.

Pete"

I have to come back in a few days and update my experience here in a complete review. To summarize it:
1.Shopping around for a gym. Called a few places and this one refused to give price over phone and asked me to come in.
2. Came in, originally wanted 70$ per month. Told them I had to look at 2 other gyms in the area. Told me dont go to them. On my way out grabbed me and escorted me back into their office. They gave me a rate of 56$.
3. Told them I'm looking for a gym that offers pay as I go because some months I wont be able to make it due to work or even winter. They told me not to go to the other gyms because they know how they are ran and in a nutshell, they 'suck'..so they said.
4. With a bunch of mumbo jumbo theyve told me, they said they can go pay as I go and to call in and 'freeze' the account when needed. Boy was this a scam.
5 And they throw in free training sessions with fitness trainer.
6. Came in twice, asked for trainer..they said none was around. Not that they were busy, just none in there.
7. Regarding what I told them about me needing flexibility about work, job needed me in NY. Moved to NY and came in with lease , 1 month I owed..money for lost card, gym resignation letter. (move more than 25miles away you can cancel gym)
8. they said I owed them a extra 60 bucks that cannot be accounted for. I refused to pay that, only paid what I owed.
9. Months later they are suing for 12 complete months, plus hundreds in attorney fees. I've paid months and they want 12?
10. I reply to court letter, counter claiming and seeking a jury trial which is now pending.
11. I file claim with Better Business Bureau. Along in statement stating false claims in trainer sessions, always there. They responded they gave me a direct cell number for the 'fitness director'. Complete lie, if they did, it would be written on the contract. Since when do gyms give out personal cell numbers for trainers? And why would one even have to call when it suppose to be at the gym?

I'm now fighting this via court. They saying family oriented business, etc etc. But reality is, they are a business. They will use deceptive business tactics in whatever it is to get you in. Pricing me at 70$+ then reducing me to 50$ish when walking out and telling me other gym sucks..Yes I feel the family orientation there. I'm at fault a bit to be taken in with their gibberish.

I want to say the positive reviews here about this place was 'doctored' but being fair I cannot state that as true or false.

Please people..stand up if you feel cheated. Request a jury trial, file BBB claims, voice yourself out there with a review. We can be warned and make a better decision on a following thru with a business!!

This gym has everything from tanning to day care to a hair salon, along with brand new equipment, friendly staff, and a welcoming environment. I felt right at home from the moment I walked in the door. They don't pressure you to sign up, and will give you a 3-day pass to try out the gym for free if you want extra time to consider joining. Definitely worth the investment. It's never crowded and everyone is so helpful. I would recommend this gym to anyone.

originally i had stumbled across this gym, i was looking for a new one, my prior gym shut had recently down. so i went in one Saturday afternoon. upon first stepping in i liked how clean the gym was, and how many machines there were. so i asked to speak to someone in sales just to see what fitness plans they had.

the sales person spoke to me about how this gym's #1 concern is customer service. i was told that it was on a month to month basis and i was not trapped in a year contract like most other gyms. the monthly price was much more then i had spent at my last gym, but they assured me that it included a free monthly personal training session as well as my 3rd and 6th month would be free all part of a promotion they were having.

call me naive, but the salesman seemed trustworthy and this seemed like a great gym, so i signed my name on the dotted like and signed up.

then reality hit me pretty quick. the classes are good, and the gym is always clean and machines are always available, I'll give them that, but upon my 3rd month when i was billed i was completely taken by surprise.

so i spoke to the manager, because apparently the salesman who set me up was fired, and he basically told me he did not believe me, and there is no reason why i would get any months for free, then wen i tried to cancel he informed me i couldn't because i was signed into a year contract.

i later come to find out, this salesman also promised many other members things that they never received either. i don't know why he was let go, but i can say i have a good idea. and the worst part of it is, this gym that "prides itself on its customer service" felt no need to honor what i was told, much less compensate me for anything or even let me out of my contract, even though i was told it was a month to month contract! they just told me that they asked the ex-sales men about these claims, and he denied them all and basically they believe him. even though numerous of your customers have had the same complaints as me.

frankly I'm trapped in this deceitful establishment for a year, but once my year is done i will never look back. i can do nothing about my situation, all i can do is warn others not to make the same mistake i did.

don't trust anyone at this gym, all they care about is your money, customers to them are just dollar signs and they will do whatever they can to get you

thank you

I have been a member of Strength & Fitness club since the summer - this is the best gym around and has great, brand new equipment. The treadmills have LCD televisions attached to each one of them and every machine is brand new. The staff is friendly and courteous and are willing to help you out if you're just beginning. Another selling point: it's never crowded.

Strength and Fitness is one of the best gyms I've had the pleasure of working out in. The staff there is both friendly and knowledgeable. Whether you have been working out for years or you are a nervous beginner, this gym will accommodate your fitness goals.

The facility itself is a dream. They have LCD screens in every cardio machine, 40" screens in the weight room, a daycare center, a soon to be opened hair salon, classes from cycling to ab work and more! All the equipment is kept in great condition and is some of the best I've used.

It is in a very convenient location right off the parkway.

If you want to get in shape, stay in shape, or just have some fun you can't go wrong with Strength and Fitness.
