This is a small chic little lunch joint with different food like burgers and salads. It's not a huge place so it isn't great for huge groups, but it is a nice place to get out with a few people.

Happy to report that the Refuge in San Carlos seems to have found a loyal following after being opened for a while. Took the family there on Saturday night and it was overflowing from 6pm on - even people eating outside under the heat lamps in November. First time I went I had the pastrami sandwich which was great. Thick slices of super succulent pastrami. This time around I tried the burger with mushrooms and caramelized onions and fries with my de koninck ale. Really tasty gourmet burgers and fries were good too. recommend getting their on the earlier side with kids so that you can get one of the 6 booths in the intimate room. The place is kind of like a cool basement hangout where the owner brings together "a few of his favorite things" - belgian beer and pastrami. Kind of random, but kind of fun and a nice alternative to the usual Laurel St. fare.

i'd recommend.

What a great concept! Gourmet sandwiches and exotic beer on tap!I thoroughly enjoyed my second visit to Refuge. While waiting for our table for lunch we struck up a conversation with a couple at the bar. They steered us towards the Scallop dish and the Chicken Noodle soup, which is what they were dining on.It turns out they were the owner's parents and the Mom gave her son a couple of the recipes on the menu. The chicken Noodle Soup and the Tri- Tip sandwich with creamy bleu cheese potatoes. The scallops were perfectly seared on the outside with a moist, succulent fish on the inside and served atop a wild mushroom relish!Fantastic! The wide section of Beers on tap was great. The server suggested a lovely.light Belgian beer that was divine.I will definitely be back to sample more.
