Worth The Drive

by jenny j.

I drove from outside the Perimeter to go to this optical store because I heard such great things about their selection. I was not disappointed. They have a great selection of eyewear and I am so glad I snuck out of work early (shhhh) to check it out. Their inventory is quite different than other places I have been to and since that is exactly what I was looking for - they fit the bill. I found a great frame and they were very nice to do business with.

Superlative Serivce - Very professional

by Laurie H.

I just got my glasses and am so pleased. I have tried progressive lenses a couple of times before but never had success. This optician specializes in progressives and he should. I can see amazing - with no time to get used to them, which he told me I may need. Aside from that, they took my insurance (so I got to save some $ on these expensive lenses). The doctor was very communicative as to my examination and explained to my prescription and how progressive lenses would help me with my day to day needs. The practice was very forthcoming with my benefits and I will go back next year and the year after. I have already referred some of my coworkers to Eyeworks of Decatur and think they are just great.

Mixed Bag

by Alan M.

I found both the receptionist and optometrist to be very pleasant and helpful. The exam was thorough and friendly and the optometrist was very forthcoming in explaining procedures and results. My impression of Dr. Hegetschweiler's service was quite positive and I would recommend him to friends.

However, dealing with the optician proved difficult. He seemed far more interested in maximizing profits than in providing accurate information. Only by asking at the very end of our transaction did I find out that I could save over $100 by utilizing insurance benefits and having my insurance provider manufacture the lenses rather than Eyeworks. At no time during the lengthy discussion of lenses did he say that this was a possibility. Had I not thought to ask when I saw the final bill I would never have known that I could save a substantial amount through my insurance.

The optician misstated frame benefits, saying there was no frame benefit for the pair chosen or most of their other frames; however, he offered a 20% discount. This coincidentally turned out to be an amount that was $2 less than the actual frame benefit; had less expensive frames been chosen the insurance frame benefit would have considerably exceeded the 20% discount. In the case of the lenses the insurance information was simply not volunteered, for the frames the information given was not accurate.

I do not know whether the optician's behavior was a product of ignorance or deliberate omission and misstatement. He seemed unacquainted with the insurance benefits of the United Optical (previously Spectera) plan for which Eyeworks is a network provider. However, he showed little interest in determining benefits and considerable interest in making sure that the work was done by Eyeworks at a higher price. After checking on the actual benefits involved and discovering that there was a benefit for all frames, contrary to his statements, I spoke with the optician. Rather than admitting an honest mistake on his part he insisted that the 20% discount was the frame benefit (leaving open what would have happened had less expensive frames been chosen).

I was left with the feeling that advertised acceptance of insurance was a "bait and switch" tactic when it came to buying the glasses. This was not the case with the eye exam which seemed competent, honest and conforming to the insurance benefits. I can definitely recommend the optometrist; however one might wish to comparison shop for glasses or buy elsewhere.

Tops! So Happy!

by Jillian S.

I have never been to an eye glasses store where I found so many pairs of glasses I liked on myself. Whoever the buyer is does a great job. The only problem I had at this place was deciding which pair to choose!

The staff was very professional and really know their stuff. The optician specializes in progressive lenses, so I was extra thrilled -since that is what I wear.

I couldn't be happier with my glasses. There is something to be said for going to a place where the staff is so experienced, knowledgeable and incredibly helpful. This place is that and much more. They are a great asset to Decatur. I highly recommend Eyeworks of Decatur.

RIP OFF CENTRAL!

by Nhan-Ai D.

RIP-OFF CENTRAL! I live right above this office so I went in for an eye exam. The price of the eye exam is reasonable ($114 for glasses and contacts). The doctor was very nice and personable. My only problem is with the sales staff. They were extremely pushy and try to upsell everything. They'll tell you that it's absolutely necessary to get the higher priced lenses. They'll charge for scratch resistant lenses (something I've never had to pay for.)

First off, their prices are EXTRAORDINARILY high. I had put in a purchase for a pair of glasses for about $400, only to find that I could buy them online for $107. I immediately cancelled my order. Unfortunately, when I went back to get my pupil distance written on my prescription, the sales person informed me that they don't offer that service along with the eye exam. (FYI - they had already measured by pupil distance for the initial order, but didn't write it on my prescription.) They ended up charging me $20 for a pupil distance measurement that took less than 10 seconds. (I checked my watch!) This is the first time in my life I've ever experienced this and absolutely absurd. I'm guessing because I refused to purchase glasses from them at 4x the price, they were trying to get money out of me any way they could. (I should also add that when I initially told them that I would be purchasing my contacts online, the guy told me they sold contacts for the same price as online. I asked him the price for Acuvue Daily Moist and he told me $40 a box. I get them online for $22.)

I would go to this office for an eye exam, but would never buy contacts or eyeglasses there. They will try to upsell you as much as they can and scare you into thinking that purchasing online is a bad idea, which it's not. You can save tons of money!

Great Frames - Great Service!

by Suzanne R.

I am so excited that this eye wear store opened up in Decatur. Not only are they incredibly convenient, but they have some of the coolest eye glasses I have seen in a long time.

The eye doctor is VERY knowledgeable and even more than that, shopping for eyeglasses was fun! They are very up to date with the latest styles and they know what to recommend and what will look good on you. For the first time, I was not cringing trying on glasses.

It was a great experience and I recommend Eyeworks of Decatur to anyone looking for an eye exam and/or new glasses. I can't wait to get my new glasses and show them off!

Eyeworks is a great addition to Decatur. (they also have coveted FREE parking behind their building!!)
