The Scene
Mercury Bar is simplicity itself, like an upscale Rudy's without the free hot dogs. A few red booths are clustered behind the door, the long bar stretches the full length of the space and the shiny tables and chairs are arranged neatly toward the back. Four giant-screen TVs and three plasma TV's decorate the space.

The Draw
Mercury has cleverly cornered the market of after-work diners, who are seeking to first drink themselves into near oblivion, and then recover with a large portion of comfort food. With a menu that covers the full range of bar snacks, as well as fish and chips and a good selection of Mexican, Mercury has it covered, and the local, professional crowd has moved right on in.

Mercury Bar

This easy going Midtown bar attracts a mix crowd of afterwork suits from the Times Square area. Also many musicians, writers and artists find their way over from the Film Center Across the Street.

Gonna Buy Me a Mercury!

by Jef K. | insider Insider | Rank: 21,739

The desert that is 9th Avenue has a dark cool oasis, and that my friends is Mercury Bar. It's a good spot for couples esp after the theater. Cheapish drinks, too!

Smells Inside + Bad Attitude

by loyolathebest

Absolutely the worst place in the neighborhood. I had the most horrible experience with the manager and bartender last week. I have advised all my friends and co-workers to never set foot in Mercury Bar again. These people do not deserve to be working at a bar, they do not know a thing about customers and treat you with attitude if they feel you are not tipping them enough, they act like a tip is their right and that you are doing THEM a favor by sitting at the bar. As for the manager, she can take her attitude and her stupid phone and shove it. WARNING: DO NOT GO TO MERCURY BAR- ATTITUDE!

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Staff, Managers, SMELLS, DIRTY

goodtimes in a bad economy

by leicares

I recently meet my friends at Mercury for drinks before dinner and had an amazing time. The friendly staff greeted me as soon as I walked in the door. We walked in exactly at the right time when the bartender began playing the wheel of fortune game that scored us half price drinks!!! So we ordered a couple drinks sat around enjoyed the atmosphere the friendly waitress sold us on a couple of appetizers that were amazing and before you know it we cancelled our reservations and had dinner there. Over the couple of hours the wheel was spun and the drinks were flowing. A goodtime was had by all!!!!

Pros: Good food, great value for your dollar, great service!!!!

Cons: We had to leave

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

by fashunista27

Much agreed, I've lived in this neighborhood for six years, and this has to be the worst place to could choose to go to. I was recently coerced into meeting friends for a bite to watch a game---the bartender barely acknowledged us and the waitresses all walked around with scowls on their faces. When our food came out cold and we finally got the bartender's attention, he went over to the "owner" (mean face and really bad fake tan) who glared in our direction. We got new food, but no apology---almost like we were putting them out. On of the guys in our group had a similar experience with this "owner" in Joshua Tree down the street...not a surprise these two dumps are owned by the same people. I will never step foot in either of these places again---plenty of other places in the hood with better food, service, and owners who know a thing about customers.

Pros: Big TV's

Cons: Nasty staff, bad food, weak drinks

why mercury bar when there are other great places in the neighborhood?

by rutgerscpa02

My coworkers and I used to go the Mercury Bar every weekend but we stopped going because the whole bar changed.. meeting a new bartender every weekend was making me dizzy (apparently Mercury Bar goes through alot of staff) and I couldnt sit without seeing some kind of ad being shoved down my throat, the last straw was turning the entire bar into a billboard, it was too much... also the staff can be alittle offish and nonchalant. I will miss the pizza but I can do without. Mercury Bar has zero culture.

Pros: good pizza, tv's

Cons: glory days are over, will try to mine you

The best of the best.

by airj360

Let's be honest.

1. Everyone that hated Mercury Bar has a personal story that could have happened anywhere.
2. Typically, people only review a place if they hate it.

So let me give you the truth. Mercury Bar is a good place. It's exactly what you expect out of a bar in the area: decent food, decent drinks, etc. Some people are friendly, some aren't, but the place has a very nice vibe.

Also, it's no exaggeration to say that Mercury Bar has some of the finest edamame in all of 9th Avenue.

So come on down to Mercury Bar and have an out of this world experience!

DON'T GO HERE!

by rebelyell

I will break it down simply-frozen burgers, flat-soggy pizza, and bad drinks. To top off my lovely experience- the staff was unattentive, AND when I complained that the food was inedible, the manager told me I had to pay for it even though I didn't eat it! I told her I didn't eat it because it was inedible! Told her she should try it to see how bad it was and she refused! AND I STILL HAD TO PAY! I wasn't offered something else. No customer service. The funny part of it was they were running a special and it was dead- they can't even get people in the door with free stuff. I hope this place closes and a real fun bar opens up in its place!

Pros: zero

Cons: food,service,drinks,

THE WORST BAR ON 9TH

by nikki6ny

You have got to be kidding me. I went for ladies night, and guess what... Me and my girlfriend were the only ladies... oh no wait... the rude waitresses were there too. The $5 drinks weren't worth it considering they use a terrible well and no alchohol. SO when I decided to get a more expensive cocktail, like the bacardi mojito-it would help IF THEY ACTUALL USED BACARDI! This place is the worst. HATE IT!

Pros: I will never go back there again or recommend it to anyone

Cons: NO ALCOHOL-DISHONSET BARTENDERS-RUDE WAITSTAFF-MANAGER-ICK-DEAD

Wow, obnoxious staff...dont go here

by golds4689

I was at the mercury bar last night, when i had to step outside with for a friend. Unfortunately i left my coat inside, and when i decided to go back in, the bouncer told me i was not allowed, and that i should go home... without a coat in january! he preceded to attack me every time i ask a question and then told me he was going to call the cops on me and made me wait OUTSIDE without a coat in the middle of january. The time i spent inside was not fantastic and if you want to get treated poorly by some old guy, then definitely go here, but PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Dont' go there - Unprofessional and immature staff

by klee

My friends and I went there for a New Year's Eve 2007 private party. I am a native New Yorker and have seen enough rude people at bars. But this place by far gave me the worst experience I have ever had. When we went there those people didn't even have a guestlist for the private party. They just let anyone who was willing to pay $60 to get in and by doing that the bar was overcrowded. Nevertheless, this is not the highlight of the experience. The coat check ladies lost our friend's jacket. We were there for an hour searching for her coat. The coat check ladies became unhappy and called the manager to kick us out. The manager was rude and said to us that we have to come back when the bar closes. It was freezing cold out. How can someone walk out with a skirt in the cold?!! One of them even made a statement that maybe one of us took the jacket. The staff at this bar was immature by saying this. We are not school kids who play pranks on each other. We are all highly educated working professionals. When they didn't have an answer as to why the jacket was lost, they called the bouncer to kick us out. Come on, when your customer gave you money to check the coat, it is the bar's responsibility to keep the coat in safe custody. The bar was irresponsible when they disputed their responsibility like that. Reputation is the most precious asset in business and I think this bar has ruined their reputation. Definitely not returning.

Pros: nothing

Cons: immature, unfriendly, unprofessional staff, overpacked

Best Bar/Amazing food. Delightful on weekday afternoons.

by sdoriangray

A Pearl! It's quite lovely to have immediate, professional, and friendly service along with great food and drinks all at once! Inexpensive for it's nature, this darling Sports bar/Restaurant Creates a comfortable ambience in which you are surrounded by about seven televisions/projectors and full audio to your favourite game. The menu is amazing and always appitizing and how can you go wrong with 20 beers on tap? The staff is young, energetic and took care of us as if we were regulars, something that is very difficult to find in midtown. The main concern of my entire party was to have fun and we did! I love this place! I'm going to make it my main priority to become a regular.
If you want great service, great food/drinks and a relaxing ambience you will love this place.

Pros: Ambience, service and 20 BEERS ON TAP!!!

Cons: The booths are small...

Huge TVs, great draft selection

by michaelcruz84

Mercury is a great combination of a lounge and sports bar. The TVs are huge and they have tons of beers on draft. The food is decent but not over the top amazing. It gets crowded during sproting events so I reccommend getting there early.

Pros: tvs, draft beer

Cons: crowded

Cheap lunch specials

by maureenuw

Mercury is good for cheap lunch specials when you want to eat-in rather than have something delivered to the office. The buffalo chicken salad and the fish and chips are my favorites.

Pros: Cheap lunch specials

Cons: Smells like a bar

Bad service

by newyork814

The food and drinks were fine - what you would expect from a bar/grill. Service was slow and unfriendly - we had an encounter with management that was highly unprofessional. This place is not worth your time - head to any of the other friendly establishments in the area, where you can get a drink - and some friendly staff!

bar & grill

by noxy

I love it, we went a few nites ago for a late nite appetizer and drinks. The late nite kitchen is open like 11-1AM, I think. pizza, chick tenders, quesadillas...etc.

The atmosphere was fun and relaxing, staff was not offish, our server was very nice. This place is great to hang out for drinks, we're going back soon!

Pros: atmosphere, location

Crowded but fun

by lindros2

Mercury is a fun place to go, but too many of the bar staff can be "offish" and unfriendly. There is an ample supply of televisions, they have a VERY comprehensive food menu, and it's in a great location.
