American Kennels

Bought my maltese dog here.... in 2004. A lot of people I know bought dogs here with no problems - I'm a native new yorker - grew up here in Manhattan so had a lot of people I knew who bought dogs here with no problem. My dog is great; she is healthy, beautiful, good natured. When I bought her they told me that she would be "big" for the breed and would not be "breed standard".... and she is big for the breed standard; she is such a good dog ... that I wondered about her pedigree - I looked it up and the breeder is in missouri - I didn't find any problems with the breeder - but, now I hope that she didn't come from a puppy mill....

The vet told me that she was extremely healthy; people compliment her all the time (she is now 4 years old) and I feel very lucky to have her. I needed a pedigree dog because I wanted to be sure about temperment and adaptability to a new york apartment - and, everything worked out wonderfully - so maybe this store isn't buying its dogs from the nefarious "puppy mills" ---- I really really hope so.... Hope this is helpful to all of you... The dog was very expensive - but she is worth every penny - her temperment and personality are just wonderful.... I hope that her "mommy" isn't in one of those horrible puppy mill places!

This store on lexington is one of the many known puppy mill stores that have locations outside the city where hundreds of puppies are breed and kept in cages and live in poor conditions. By purchasing a puppy at this store, you are contributing to the profits of these mills. There are so many unwanted beautiful animals in NYC.

Adopt animals and adopt often but get them from shelters, the ASPCA or petfinder- just not pet stores!

I was looking for a dog for a while. My wife and I visited many breeders and kennels but never found love. Our vet recommended us to go to American Kennels because he got his yorkie there. We went in looking for a big dog, and saw a really sweet akita, but after the man heard about our schedule and apt size, suggested us a smaller dog that would be happier playing inside while we were out. We got our 2 shih-tzus from here and they are the second best thing that's happened to our family. We haven't tried their grooming yet, but we may. If so, a second review will go up.

Pros: Awesome people, great place

Cons: All the snooty and pretentious people from the UES

I bought a dog for 1800 dollars in an emotional purchase from a pet store (my mistake). Adopt adopt adopt.
They sold me a mix. Not a purebreed and wouldn't stand behind their sale.
