DeKwa Elements of Hair is located on Newbury Street in Boston. It has great atmosphere and it's not uptight like most salons on Newbury Street. Everyone is very welcoming at DeKwa. You'll find some of the best in the business here, especially Matthew Hawes who is terrific with color and cuts. He's the best!

Ratings_icons Want a hair cut that means everyday is a good day?

debra stark

When you have a great haircut, you can wear rags or riches and always look terrific. When you have someone who knows hair, who can look at your face and complement it with a cut that looks as good on day 45 as it does on day 1, you're in real luck. I can't tell you how long I looked for someone who knew how to cut hair, and who made me look good. I found Deneen about four years ago, and haven't had one bad haircut in all that time. I love her!

Pros: Deneen is an artist!

Ratings_icons No more bad hair days since Betty has ben my hairdresser!

jbrady177

I am very particular about my personal appearance and have been to many salons in and out of Boston. Since I found Betty, my hair has been fabulous. Ever since I started going to Betty, even strangers compliment the color and cut. Betty's expert work has been further enhanced by Keratin treatments, which I started in the spring. I exercise a lot, and the Keratin has made taking care of my hair much easier. Additionally, Betty does eyelash extensions, which I cannot live without. No more wasted $$$ on the latest mascara and tedious efforts applying it. I can actually apply every day make-up in less than 10 minutes now that I do not have to labor over mascara. For me, the ambiance at Dekwa is perfect -- no Newbury St condescending attitude. Given the quality of workmanship, the personal attention, and the time I save because I do not have to fuss with hair and make-up, I feel the pricing is very reasonable. The results make dealing with the parking hassle worth the effort.

Pros: Color & highlights, cuts, keratin treatments, false lashes

Cons: parking

Ratings_icons Brazilian Keratin Treatment

Sonyas

I just got the Brazilian Keratin treatment done for the second time at DeKwa. It was great, my hair came out so nice. And the great thing is that it didnt even damage my hair because it was a subsitute for flomohydrat. Which means the product was Great. Which means, that DeKwa uses products that are top of the line. This is a five star salon, my stylist Betty was awsomee! She kept me entertained, and when i was cold she even got me a blanket. i had a great expericance there. They have great service, great stylist, great products, and very good haircuts. By the way; i did get my hair cut . And it came out just the way i wanted. I give five big starts to this salon, and recomend it to anyone thats intrested in a great experience you wont forget or regret .

Pros: Betty !

Cons: Wish i didnt have to take the train .

Ratings_icons Fabulous cut and color

Julie K

I recently had the pleasure of having my hair cut and highlighted by Deneen at Dekwa Elements of Hair. In the past at other salons I've had to give more description of the color I wanted, yet, never really quite got the color I was hoping for. Deneen just "got it" - and she also just knew what my hair needed in terms of the cut as well. I am amazed at how much better my hair falls, how much better my hair feels, and how much healthier it is since my visit to Dekwa. I love love love the Dekwa spray in straightener product - I almost never have to plug my flat iron in and can simply just dry it straight with the use of this stuff. Their shampoos and conditions rock too. I love this place!

Pros: Awesome products

Ratings_icons Great Hair Cut!! Locks of Love

AmandaKosko

f you are thinking about going to see KYLE, RUN DON'T WALK! I got a Locks of Love hair cut and I was very nervous as I have always had long hair. Kyle made it simple and easy, and made me laugh the whole time. Cut four pony tails...wash felt great with mint like tingles on my scalp! Kyle gave me the exact cut I was looking for. I walked out of the salon feeling like a million bucks. My cut was free because of a scheduling mix up, normally Kyle is $25 Locks of Love. Everyone seemed friendly and the salon had a nice clean feel to it.

Locks of Love is a great thing to begin with, if you are thinking about donating your hair Kyle will make you feel at ease and you get pampered at a high end salon for a 'super cuts' price!

Pros: Locks of Love involvment

Cons: Parking COULD be a hassle

Ratings_icons Yuko and Keratin Straightning saved my hair!!!

Momi

I was ready to cut off the long hair I have had all of my life. It is EXTREMELY nappy, frizzy and completely unruly. When I was younger, my hair was naturally curly but as I got older the curls turned to ugly frizz. I called Betty Hawes to ask her to cut it all off. Knowing that I am really attached to my long hair, she suggested we try the Yuko/Keratin process. I AM IN LOVE!!!! I can wash it and just go. No more hours with the blowdryer and flat iron getting it to look straight and shinny only to be a frizz ball as soon as I walk outside. No more worrying about getting caught in th rain and ending up with an afro! So I have to say thank you to Betty for giving me an alternative to the crew cut I was ready for!

Pros: Stays straight in Humidity

Cons: None that I can find

Ratings_icons Amazing Yuko Relaxer Experience: Ask for Betty!

amylaweresq

I came to Betty wearing a baseball hat every time she saw me for hair color. One day she told me that if I did the Yuko Japanese Hair Relaxer, I could have the long, silky hair I had always desired...rather than the course, unruly curly hair I hid in a ponytail under a baseball hat! I was skeptical because you always hear relaxers are bad for the hair, but Betty was so knowledgeable, and gave me so many positive references to talk to before I made a decision, that I could not resist! As a lawyer, I am very type A, and like things well perfect!
Every person that I called could not say enough about how happy they were with Betty's work and the Yuko relaxer. I couldn't resist and 3 years ago I did it! I am in love with my hair! I have the long, healthy, full locks I always dreamed about. Betty was fantastic, she told me everything that was going on during each step of the process and now I live in NYC and return to see her for root touch ups twice a year! I wouldn't trust a sole besides her to touch my hair! I will say this, to anyone anywhere considering a relaxer, be honest about what you have done to your hair in the past such as bleaching, other relaxers etc., as a professional cannot read your mind and know what you have done to your hair previously, as all of those things matter in the successful outcome of any relaxer process. Betty I can never thank you enough for taking the time and care with my hair, and leaving me with gorgeous...so I am told....healthy straight hair!

Pros: Trained and beyond knowledgeable in Yuko Japanaese Relaxer

Cons: None! I come from NYC twice a year just to see Betty!

Ratings_icons Best salon on Newbury street

AH058

I started going to Betty well before she moved to Dekwa. My entire family, 3 of my friends, even my boss goes to her for color, cuts, relaxers, conditioning treatments, and the best blowdry ever!

I started doing the Yuko 4 years ago and have it done twice so far. I loved it - I have very thick, healthy, curly, color treated hair. Anyone who has unhealthy hair - its your own fault - take care of it - how you ask? Go to a great hair sytlist like Betty who keeps your hair looking healhty and great! I now do the Keratin treatments and love them even more! I like being able to go back a nd forth with wavy hair and straight hair and this is the best way to do it! I would do the Yuko again too but most of all I would never let anyone touch my hair except for Betty!

Pros: Betty

Cons: wish it were closer to my home ;)

Ratings_icons Bad experience with Japanese straightening & Betty

horriblehair

Back in October (9 months ago) I did the Japanese hair strightening with Betty. I did my research and thought about this for years.....and was extremely disappointed with the outcome. I hesitated to write anything before now because I didn't want to be responsible for ruining somebody' reputation. But when I saw the previous complaint I decided that I should let other people know that my hair was totally destroyed by this salon. My hair is still fried, takes just as long to style,& the salon never refunded any money even when I went back and showed them my hair. They did re-touch a few places which were just horrific but they made me feel badly about coming back in and pretended everything was fine....even though I could tell that they knew it wasn't. My intent is not to ruin their reputation but to let other people know not to use the salon for this service....I will show you my hair!!

Cons: spent a lot of money to get damaged hair

Ratings_icons Yuko with Betty a NIGHTMARE

bostongal3

My experience with Betty was horrible. First of all, the girl at the front desk quoted me one price but once I got in the salon on the day of the appointment Betty quote a much higher price. She promised me I would just have to use my straightening iron for touch ups and that I could dry my hair faster using only my fingers(no brush, comb, etc). However, I found myself spending 30 minutes to dry my hair to find it wavy in spot and still frizzy/bushy. I then had to spend another 20 min with the straightener. In addition, while I was getting the process done the timer had 10 more minutes left on it until the product had to be washed out and Betty decided this was the time to run to the convenience store to get a snack. (As you all know if the product is left on too long it could damage hair) She had the "assistant" wash out my hair because she was gone when the timer went off. Frankly, when im spending $800 to have my hair done she should send the "assistant" to get her a bag of chips and soda while she stays and attends to my hair. UNBELIEVABLE! In addition, upon returning home and washing my hair my scalp began to feel very hard at the roots/base of the hair in different spots of my head. After numerous attempts to reach betty, and she called me back about 4 days later as I was terrified about if my hair was damaged she finally called me back and assured me that it was not damaged(of course). Couple months later I got my hair cut with my regular stylist who told me that Betty had damaged my hair as she could tell when it was wet that there was a line of breakage. So, I basically can never do this again because that line of breakage would be too vulnerable to the amount of heat needed during this process and would break. My stylist was positive that this was the Yuko Stylists error (Betty). Not only did Betty miss out on a customer coming back for the root retouch, but I will make sure that nobody I know in the surrounding Boston area never goes here to get this done. I have friends who were considering it and they definitely wont be going to Betty! Take my advice and research one of the other salons to go to on Newbury.

Ratings_icons Fantastic Curly Haircut

katlync

I have had the same haircut/style for the last 8 years and was in desperate need of a change. I did lots of research b/c I have curly hair and didnt want to just go anywhere. I found DeKwa and Kyle on citysearch and decided this was the place to go. I am so happy with my decision and couldnt have asked for a better cut and stylist. I was very nervous and Kyle was able to put me at ease. He is super friendly and we had lots of laughs while he was working his magic. He actually had to spin me around in the chair so I couldnt see what he was doing and when he was finished and spun me around to see my new cut i was in shock but loved it!! I have gone from a girl who was wearing her hair in a bun or ponytail for years to a girl is rocking her curls in a new fun/flirty style!!!!!!
Thank you Kyle and DeKwa!!! I will be back!!!

Pros: Kyle!!!

Ratings_icons Kwan is ABSOLUTELY amazing!!!

fuzzyLogic

Kwan has been my stylist for quite a while now, probably about 5+ years. She is truly a great stylist and obviously very skilled and knowledgeable in her chosen profession. What makes me keep going back to Kwan is her opinion and sense of style. Let?s face it, if an outfit (or hairstyle) looks good on a fashion model, it doesn?t necessarily mean it will look good on us.

DeKwa always makes me feel welcome, the staff and stylists are nice and friendly. DeKwa is a gem of a salon.

Pros: Service, atmosphere, friendliness

Cons: none

My hair has always been just ok. But since I have started coming to Deneen people are constantly complimenting me on my hair style -- even this past week 2 days before I was getting my haircut again after 3 months. That never happens. Dekwa and Deneen are terrific.

Ratings_icons Deneen is the Best in Boston

davewohlgemuth

I have been a client of Deneen's for close to 10 years and have never had a bad experience while at the salon. She always gives me a great haircut and engages me in fine conversation. I am always greeted with smiles from the time I enter to the time I leave. I highly recommend Deneen or any stylest at DeKwa.

Pros: Cut , Service, Ownership, Location

Cons: None

Ratings_icons Disappointing experience all around

purpleorchid89

I was so excited to go to DeKwa after all the reviews I has read, but it was so disappointing for me. I wanted a big change, nice and stylish, and all I got was shorter hair. Seriously. It just looked like my old hair but much shorter. In the end my haircut was not BAD or anything, but it was just so mediocre I feel like my sister could have done a better job. It was not worth the amount you pay for a haircut-- original price something like $70. But since I got 20% off for my first time, it was $50 some. I think it is also for that very reason, the 20% off, the stylist (who happened to be one of the owners!) was not very friendly to me when cutting my hair. She barely smiled or talked to me at all, and mostly just seemed to express a sort of suppressed disgust at my hair when she was telling another lady to wash my hair as thoroughly as possible. I felt like she thought I wasn't worth her time, and I don't need to pay this much money to go somewhere and feel worthless. I just felt bad the whole time I was there, but I masked it with a smile. It was just a thoroughly depressing experience.

However, this is just my experience. I'm wondering if maybe I got Kyle or Ingrid (they seem very popular in these reviews), I think my experience would have been much better. It really depends on who you get I guess.

Pros: nice atmosphere, good products

Cons: expensive, unfriendly service, mediocre haircut

Ratings_icons Bad cut from Kwan.

rezel

I got a terrible cut from Kwan... very disappointing. She did the opposite of what I asked for and it is just the worst cut I have ever had. I'd have someone fix it but it needs to grow before I can do that... fortunately my hair grows fast.

Ratings_icons Kyle serves Locks of Love with all the care it deserves!

phdbride

I am so late in posting this that I am embarassed. Anyway, Kyle gave me a great cut back in September after I gave up 10 inches of my hair. What did I end up with? Something I can style into business chic or Gwen Stefani Rave night cool. Both styles in less than fifteen minutes. A woman on the T who regularly sees me came up to me right after I had my hair cut. Although we had never introduced ourselves, we both know eachother from the commute. She noticed my hair and made a special trip across the car to tell me how my hair made my face look thinner and that my cheekbones popped. Can a girl feel any better? Thanks Kyle - see you on Thursday!

Pros: staff, skills, cleanliness, friendliness

Cons: ambience, indulgent experience

I have been a client at Dekwa for two years and couldn't be happier! Annie is my colorist and Ingrid my stylist and both are truly artists! The staff are always fun and welcoming. If you're looking for a stylist that specializes in specific hair types or services this is the place for you! I would highly recommend all of the stylists at Dekwa!

Ratings_icons Best place to get a really great haircut

SofiaP

I just had my first haircut at Dekwa. My cut was done by Deneen and it is without any doubt the best haircut I have ever gotten on this side of the Atlantic. I have fairly thick, semi-straight hair, and Deened did a wonderful job at cutting it in a way that it flatters my face (she seems to have a very good sense for that) and looks interesting and full of movement. I used their "ecuts" offer for first time customers, but I will be more than happy to pay the full price next time. A good haircut makes such a difference!

Pros: Deneen is superb at cutting hair

Cons: none

Ratings_icons Great salon working for a great cause

Elanabeth

For the past 3 years I was growing out my hair to donate to Locks of Love. When I finally decided to get the cut done, I chose DeKwa as I knew that they were one of the salons that would send the hair to Locks of Love for me. So with butterflies in my belly I entered the salon. Cherylann Esposito was so nice and so kind throughout the cut. She was so sweet when my mother took picture after picture after picture. Not to mention, I love my hair!!!! I have gotten so many compliments on the cut (which was free with the Locks of Love donation), and I was so impressed that she is donating her time and amazing skills to this cause. I will definately return to the salon and to see Cherylann for trims between now and my next Locks of Love cut.

I've been going to Kwan at Dekwa for the past 7+ years and she's quite amazing. I get my color and cut there. She's great with hair for asian women who have straight hair. Mine just lays there. But after a cut with Kwan, I always feel like a movie star, ready for the red carpet. I've even taken sample pictures to try out and she's always made my hair look good.

Pros: complimentary coffee or glass of wine

It is never fun to think about covering greys, spending a chunk of your hard earned $ and fearing a bad cut. HOWEVER, all these worries go right out the window at DeKwa. I was forced to relax and have fun. No choice. All the staff I encountered was friendly, personable and accommodating. Kyle took great care of me (and my hair). I have received so many compliments on my new short cut. I only wish I lived closer, I would be in more often!

SugarPhotog

There is only one word to describe Kyle and his styling: FABULOUS! I went to him to donate my hair to Locks of Love. It is a very delicate process, because it means a drastic haircut. But the reviews on CitySearch lived up to their expectations and he really did a wonderful job. He is meticulous and cut my short do to my curls. I haven?t worn my hair curly in years, but I?m happy to say that I?m glad to see them again. Thank you Kyle. I?ll be seeing you again soon.

kaitlynchu143

This place was such a nightmare! to start with don't believe there reviews!!!!!! They pushed me into buying products that i really didnt need and i bought them anyway because i felt bad. i asked for a side bangs and betty gave me short uneven bangs right across my forhead. I am absolutely embarrased to leave my house. I got a partial foil, the color was fine except for the fact that on my part there are bleach marks everywhere. i was better off going to supercuts. very dissapointed.

Ratings_icons Nice, but pricey

sarah2108

I tried out DeKwa recently for the first time after reading so many incredible reviews. Once I got to the salon I was a little disappointed to see that they bribe customers to post reviews with the promise of a free hair product. So I felt a bit that I had been duped. Just putting that out there.

That said, I DID enjoy my experience. Ingrid was fantastic, and I had a really good time talking with her. She cut my hair exactly like I wanted, which has been rare in my experience (usually I find that stylists tend to listen to you and say ok to your request, and then take your cut in a wholeeee different direction). She offered styling tips to suit my lifestyle (i.e. I am a "dry it and go" kind of girl, so she offered tips accordingly and didn't waste either of our time explaining some 35-minute hair care routine that I never would have followed), which I appreciated.

If you are a first time customer, go to their website and sign up for their eCuts emails. They will email you in the morning with open appointments for the day, and if you sign up for one, you get 20% off. So if you can be flexible, this is a great savings.

Unfortunately, the offer is good for first timers only, and I could never justify paying full price for one of their haircuts. My cut was $56 with the eCuts savings, which is totally do-able. Without that 20%, though, I would have to pay $70; to me, that's a little ridiculous.

So in short, I really liked DeKwa, but I won't be back. $70 is a bit beyond my limit. If you are willing to pay $70 for a haircut, though, you should go for it. I have tried other stylists/salons on Newbury, and I definitely liked this one (and Ingrid) the best.

Pros: Ingrid was great; generally friendly staff; laid-back atmosphere (not arrogant like some other Newbury places)

Cons: cost; the space is a bit small

Ratings_icons Yoko hair straightening is the best thing I've ever done.

Diana001

This is my third time at the salon and every experience has been great. I got the Yoko hair straightening treatment and is the best thing I've ever done. My hair is naturally wavy so I always had to dry my hair and use the straightening iron for it to be perfect. After the Yoko treatment I just wash my hair and go, don't need to dry it or anything and it always looks like I got out of the salon. It is definitely worth it.

ep919

After reading some reviews, I decided to come here to get a perm. For the most part, I liked it. The space is very modern but a little small. I really liked it and it definitely didn't come out too curly, but it didn't last very long. After a couple of weeks, my hair seems pretty flat again. It didn't damage my hair too much, but I'm not sure if I would do it again as it did not seem like it would be worth the money.

Ratings_icons Fantastic Experience

nikkisue512

Ingrid recently cut my hair for locks of love and I had a fabulous experience. For almost 8 years I had very long hair so to cut it short was definitely a nerve-wracking experience. Ingrid was very comforting before and after the cut. Her staff was also very comforting, coming over to me during the cut and assuring me of how good it looked. I also told Ingrid how hair unsavvy I was and she was more than happy to teach me exactly how to do my hair and give me all sorts of great styling tips. Overall I was extremely satisfied. Coming from a very upscale salon in the past I was somewhat nervous to put my hair in someone else's hands. Dekwa exceeded my expectations and I am sure to return there in the future for any and all hair needs. Thank you Ingrid for doing such an amazing job!

Ratings_icons Locks of Love with Curly Hair

blueskylar18

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to donate my hair for Locks of Love. Upon moving to Boston this summer, I had yet to find a stylist in the area. I found Dekwa on the internet because of the free and inexpesive haircuts they provide for donators. I was able to schedule an appointment within a week because of a cancellation and was very pleased with my stylist Kyle. He was the first stylist I had ever had who embraced my curly hair and brought out all the natural curl, like I had never seen before. It was hassle free, because they send the hair away for you as well. I would highly suggest Kyle at Dekwa for anyone with curly hair. He was friendly and knowledgable on curly hair, which is hard to find! He had styling tips for me to maintain my hair upon leaving the salon as well. My one complaint is he offered to email me the tips he verbally told me, so I wouldn't forget anything, but has yet to follow through on that. But this was an additional service, that I would never expect from a stylist. So I still highly recommend Kyle. Dekwa also has a great product for curlty hair that Kyle was able to recommend too.

I recently had my hair cut for Locks of Love at the DeKwa Salon. Kyle was excellent! My hair looks fantastic, and I've had nothing but compliments. Kyle is personable, and full of wit and humor. I enjoyed the atmosphere as much as the results. The salon is gorgeous, everyone was upbeat and relaxed. The shampoo girl (sorry I didn't catch her name) was amazing as well!

I also have to give DeKwa and Kyle especially since he does ALL the LOL cuts kudos for participating in such a great program. If you are considering making the leap, just do it and call DeKwa and make an appointment with Kyle...you won't be sorry.

Pros: The atmosphere is great!

Cons: Kyle is so popular you might have to wait for an appointment!

My experience at DeKwa was great. I had my hair cut by Deneen (who also is a co-owner of the salon) and she was fantastic! I went there hoping for something new and different with my hair (it has been long, straight and boring for years). After a fifteen minute consultation on what I wanted, she started cutting and I loved it. The atmosphere is also wonderful - very relaxed, nice music (not too loud), bright top level space and not overly trendy. (Great prices too).

Ratings_icons YUKO by Betty: Best thing ever!!!!!!

jentaggart

So i got a yuko done by betty several weeks ago and it was amazing!!!! where it used to take me 45 mins-1hr to straighten my out of control curls it now takes 10 minutes max! i wash my hair before i go to bed, get up and run a flat iron through it for like 2 minutes and im good to go! my hair is shinier and healthier than ever. It will still hold a curl if i want to use a curling iron on the ends and i can make it super sleek and straight or big and bouncy with tons of body depending on how i use my flat iron/blow dryer. If you hate your frizz and want a permanent solution this is the way to go! The price is very reasonable compared to other salons in the area and worth every penny! Do yourself a favor and go see betty!!!!!!!

Pros: knowledgeable staff, excellent customer service, wonderful ambiance

Cons: none!

Ratings_icons Amazing hairdresser

cheryl88

Betty is truly an amazing hairdresser, with multiple specialties. I have had a range of services done by her, including make-up, extensions, and color. She is so passionate about what she does, you can tell she loves her job, and is happy doing it. I usually don't like when other people do my make-up, and I have to fix it when I get home; but I couldn't have been happier with it when Betty did it. I got compliments from everyone I talked to, and it was perfect for the event I was attending. She also does extensions, which not many hairdresses do. They looked so real, and they were exactly what I wanted. Just recently, I had her do my color. I had it colored previously, almost black. When I wanted to color it red, I knew it would be difficult because there are a few processes in order to do that. It came out flawless, evenly colored, and it didn't look or feel like straw. I have never been happier with a hairdresser, and I HIGHLY recommend her as a fabulous hairdresser, who you can be confident about doing your hair.

Pros: feng-shui atmosphere, wine, coffee, tea, water

Ratings_icons LOVE Kyle!

hayleyt

I did some research on free or reduced price places that cut hair for Locks of Love and came across DeKwa. I called and made and appointment with Kyle (the one who does the LoL cuts). I was nervous going in because it had been years since I have had short hair, but Kyle made me feel right at home. He offered me water, had me take me time getting ready, and was very personable. He made awesome conversation and I enjoyed his company. But even more so, I enjoyed the haircut. After he cut off the donation, he spent about 45 minutes cutting and styling my hair. He admitted he's a perfectionist and an expert at cutting curly hair, which is definitely true! He really took his time to make sure my hair looked good. When he blew it striaght after the cut, it looked as if I had naturally striaght hair - it was thin, shiny, and there was no sign of frizz. It was amazing! I wish he could do my hair for me every day. I VERY HIGHLY recommend him to anyone, and I am definitely going back to him for my next "regular" hair cut!

Pros: nice atmosphere

Ratings_icons LOL awesome cut!

I wanted to donate my hair again to LOL and I saw great reviews about Kyle and so I decided to give him a try. I have curly hair and it was shorter than it has been in the past when I've donated it so I was pretty nervous. I trusted Kyle and I'm so glad I did. I have never had any style to my hair because I am always afraid of getting a poofy short cut, but Kyle did a wonderful job. He even took the time to write out directions on products I should put in it! It's totally different from anything I've ever had and I LOVE IT! I'm still getting complements :) I definitely recommend him, thanks Kyle!

How many ways can you say AWESOME and GREAT? Well, a friend introduced me to Kyle, and it was love at first site!!! Kyle has yet to disappoint! Trust me when I say that many hair salons I've been to do not know how to handle asian hair...my dye job either comes out too bleached or too dark, and I went to some seriously reputable salons on newbury Street. Then came Kyle! I never have to tell Kyle what to do with my hair... i just let him decide on what looks best, and I have NEVER been disappointed. i always get complimants on my hair when i leave Dekwa.. what can i say, nothing like feeling fabulous walking down newbury Street! Thank you for my great hair Kyle (am still getting complimants 2 weeks later)!!! see you soon! muah!

I went to Dekwa to see Kyle for a locks of Love haircut. He was amazing. I was a bit nervous at first but kyle was very nice and he made me feel completely at ease. He cut off the 10" inches and what he did with the left over hair was nothing short of AMAZING! After reading the comment below about how "bad" kyle was i just could not beleve that we had seen the same person. I guess that person was not having a good day herself. Kyle was wonderfully nice and catered to my hair needs. So if your looking for a great Lock of Love cut go see kyle you could not go worng. thank you Dekwa for the service and awsome cut i have been getting compliments all day!

Pros: kyle, Locks of Love, staff

Cons: parking

Ratings_icons Locks for Love - don't get your hair cut here

dublin32

I went to Kyle at DeKwa recently to donate my hair for locks for love. I grew my hair long enough that I would not end up with a really short cut. We discussed what I wanted and he said he would keep the lenght which made me happy. After he cut the hair to donate I was feeling okay because it was still a few inches below my shoulders. But then when he got the sissors after washing my hair I was devistated. He cut an additional 3 inches of hair. I would not have been as upset if that hair was donated but it wasn't it just got swept away. Right now my hair is to to short to pull back and I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My hair is very wavy and frizzy and I can't do anything. It is always falling in my face and to short to put behind my ear. I read all the reviews prior to going there and I don't know if I got him on a bad day but my whole experience at DeKwa was horrible. When my hair was being dried my scalp kept getting burned and he was pulling my hair as he was cutting and brushing it. And he was upset about something and taking it out on my head. I do not recommed this place for people who want to keep there hair long. It is a hard thing to cut 10 inches and after this experience I don't think I can do it again.

Cons: don't listen to the client

I went to the DeKwa for my first hair cut & color for the first time in Boston. Before i came to Boston i was living in New York City. I thought that i would get a new style for my new job in Boston. One of my friends told me to go to this place(DeKwa) & i said sure why not. So i went to go & check out the place. My friend told me about Betty. She did my hair & my cut. It turned out amazing ! Just like i dreamed it would turn out. She is now my new hair stylist. Betty does a terrific job with hair. My hair color is beautiful & flawless. I highly recommended Betty as your hair stylist.

Ratings_icons BEST Yuko Straightening System

teenycc

Betty, the trained Yuko specialist, is truly an artist - I had unruly curly hair, and she literally transformed it! All it took was 4 hours out of my day and suddenly I had shiny STRAIGHT locks! I had been other places to quote prices, and this was certainly the best price and, in hindsight, definitely the best value. The assistants were sweet and helpful as ever, and the haircut was just as amazing as the straightening! Its also quite comforting to know that the next time I need to get a touch up, it will not be as expensive as the first time - only $300 and up! The best thing about this place, though, is that they do not push products on you once your service is over; no awkward pressure is fantastic!!! So, all in all, I saved hundreds on my service while getting the best value in Boston, and enjoyed myself throughout. If you drive, give yourself plenty of time to find parking - the closest lot is usually packed full during the day! Wednesday's are slow days, and make sure you request Betty for any hair needs! ~ Love, The Newly Straightened Hair Critic!

Pros: Yuko Straightening System, Service, Location, Access to the T

Cons: Didn't get any coloring or highlighting done

Ratings_icons Amazing hair cut

Last week, my beautiful daughter with gorgeous very long, blond hair informed me that it was time that she donate her hair to Locks of Love. As her mother, I was terrified. She had always been known for her hair and how was any "short" style going to look as good? After researching online, I found Kyle at DeKwa who does special haircuts for Locks of Love. I completely lucked out and got an appointment. What I was expecting was that he would cut the requisite 10", tidy up her hair and (especially since he was working with a child) send her on her way with a pat on the back. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Kyle took the time to assess my daughers face and spent more time giving her a first class cut than any cut I'VE ever received -- and I used to be in the hair industry! In the end she had a trendy, workable, top notch cut that have not only her peers jealous, but all their mothers as well. I'm snowed. I hope Kyle reads this review so he knows how appreciative we are. I still get a tear in my eye when I see her short hair, but seeing how happy she is and how great she looks definitely help.

Pros: Friendly, caring, very trendy haircut

Cons: parking, I guess

I'm so glad I found Kyle! I moved to Boston to go to college and I needed to find a new hairstylist. I researched some salons and found the DeKwa had the most reasonable prices and the nicest atmosphere. Kyle has cut and foiled my long blonde hair twice and he did exaclty what I asked for, both times my hair turned out better than anything I have had done to my hair previously. Kyle is a very outgoing guy and fun to get your hair done by. Not only will your hair look great the day you get it done, but the color grows out nicely and looks just as good months later!

I got my hair cut by Kyle for Locks of Love...that means it's free! He was super nice and understanding since cutting off 10 inches of my hair was not the easiest thing to do. He made the process as painless as possible and gave me a really cute cut. I actually like my new haircut despite the fact I'm a long-haired kind of girl. He listened to what I wanted, which is a lot more than some stylists do in this city. I strongly reccommend going to Kyle for any style and if you have long hair, think about donating it to Locks of Love!
