I happen to have extemely thick and long hair that can be a royal pain to deal with. Sometimes to treat myself I will get my hair blown straight by a professional. Some stylists can be really lazy and not dry my hair fully, but not here. Even thought it sometimes takes extra to get my mane dry, they always make sure that no moisture it left. And it usually lasts a few days before I need to wash it again.

I went with my girlfriend when she went to Dekwa to get her hair cut for Locks of Love. They gave her a free haircut with their junior stylist, who didn't seem like a junior stylist to us. He was very friendly and professional, which was quite reassuring to her, as she was taking 10 inches off! He even took the time to write down exactly what her hair care regimen should now be, and did not try at all to sell her the salon's products.

Hi,
My name is Michael and I've had the Yuko system done to my hair by Betty Hawes (formerly Camacho) at DEKWA Salon. Betty has done my hair twice now with the Yuko System and I can't say enough about it. Its fantastic! If you have hair that frizzes and bushes, and you know the frustration of spending hours with your hair, only to get the same results. If moisture and humidiy have ruined your day more than a few times. If a bad hair day is the norm as it always seemed to be for me, then its for you. Its worth the price just for the freedom it gives to you. The time freed up with this hair treatment is incredible to me. I just don't have to spend the same time getting my hair done that I did before. What with drying and flat irons... please. I wear my hair on the longer side. It was such a pleasure through the summer to swim in the ocean and have my hair dry without the frizzing. I love it. Betty is the best. She's very pleasant and extremely conscientious about her work. I appreciate that very much. You'll love Dekwa. Its very comfortable, very trendy and what you'd expect to find on Newbury St. Good people. Good salon. So go... you'll like it.
Pros: Nicely done with a feng shui theme. Easy to find. Pleasant people. Very attentive.
Cons: Its Newbury St. and parking is what it is.

On the recommendation of a friend of mine, I went to see Kyle Lemoine at DeKwa. Curly hair can be hard to style in a way that looks natural, or in a way that is easy to re-create, but Kyle did a fabulous job, I will definitely go see him again! And despite the fact that it's a Newbury St. salon, the prices are not at all outrageous. Go see Kyle before he becomes too famous to squeeze you in!

I had the Yuko System done by Betty with great results. Betty and her coworkers were great, the atmosphere was comfortable and I left looking like a million bucks. Highly recommended if you're interested in Japanese straightening and looking for a trustworthy place.

I signed up for E-cuts, which was very simple. The email address and directions are provided on their website. Kyle cut my hair and did a fabulous job. I was a bit nervous because I wanted bangs, but Kyle was great. He was pretty quick as well. For only $40 for cut and dry, it was a really awesome deal. I'm glad I went!

I have been to the best - I used to get my hair cut by Oscar Blonde in New York - major waste of money I know, but I think having been to the top dogs in the business gives me perspective and some experience to make the following statement: I truly love Dekwa. The salon is not in any way pretentious - as most of the Newbury salons are. Betty, my stylist is wonderful - she is a talented colorist and stylist who listens to your needs and does not look at your head of hair as a potential experiment or a way to show off an obscure artistic creation. She takes her time - never makes you feel rushed or leaving you with frizz b/c the salon over booked - this never happens - it seemed to always be the case though when I would go to the other (I will not name names) salon down the street and the stylist would be so busy and flustered they would have an assistant straighten/ blowdry my hair and it would stink! Betty and the rest of the salon are down-to-earth people who make every person feel welcomed and special. I have sent everyone I know to Betty and they all love her. My sister even drives in from NYC (she too went to the Oscar Blonde Salon for many years) to get her hair colored and chemically straightened.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Betty and Dekwa - I would never go anywhere else - and I think I have been to them all!

I went to Betty to get my hair straightened using the Yuko system - she was great! I had no experience with straightening before, but she met with me first and talked me through the whole process, explaining in detail how it worked and what I could expect. Making an appointment was easy and the environment of the Dekwa salon is very relaxed. The whole process took about 4 hours (I have shoulder length hair) and everyone was very friendly. Although the Yuko system is expensive, the cost was not as extreme as I had imagined, but it's worth it. I would highly recommend Betty and Dekwa to anyone. I will definately be going back to Betty to have my hair touched up when needed.
Pros: Very friendly, Excellent skill and service, No pressure to buy expensive products

I was tremendously fortunate to have Deneen work on my hair. I have gone to several different hairstylists over the years and only one other stylist has ever cut my hair the way I wanted. I guess you could say that I am hard to please. Nevertheless, Deneen listened, paid attention to what I wanted, and her execution was flawless. Unlike many other stylists on Newbury (who would rather cut and style your hair the way they think is best,) Deneen will listen, give suggestions, and surpass your expectations. The staff is friendly and judging by the amount of customers that come into their salon, they are also clearly experienced and talented people. I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking a new hair salon; you won't be disappointed.
Tip: Just remember that they're on the 4th floor as there is a different salon on the floor below.
Pros: Friendly staff, great atmosphere, experienced stylists

I highly recommend Betty! I'm admittingly particular about my hair and it has been 6 years and 2 coasts since I have trusted a stylist enough to put in highlights. I brought in a photo and she did replicated the style. 2 weeks later, I'm still receiving compliments from EVERYONE! SHE'S FANTASTIC!!
Pros: Very accommodating staff offering espresso and water.
Cons: Nothing.

I first came for a Locks of Love cut with Kyle-- he was able to style it even after cutting a foot off. Because I was so pleased with his work and demeanor, I returned for a regular cut. Because I don't know a lot about hair, I like it when the stylist can take the lead and still give some imagination to the cut, which Kyle does. The salon has a comfortable mix of clientele, and its relaxed environment puts me at ease. Furthermore, I found the price to be very decent for a salon on Newbury Street.
Posted 07/01/06
Thank you to Kyle for his warm and welcoming demeanor. He put me completely at ease and created a fabulous new look for me even when left with not much hair to work with ! I'll definitely be back!
Pros: service
Cons: a long hike up the stairs!!

A friend of mine recommended coming to DeKwa for Locks of Love, so I made an appointment. I was a little nervous about having 10 inches cut off, but Kyle put me at ease and made me very comfortable. I didn't know exactly what I wanted, but being the skilled stylist he is, he gave me an amazing hair-cut that made me look very chic and more my age (a big plus!). I keep getting compliments from my friends and coworkers.

Like many of the other reviews that I have read on City Search, I am here to rave about Kyle. I had grown my hair out for Locks of Love and made an appointment with Kyle for a cut and color - thanks to all of the positive reviews he had received. I have had long hair since I was a child, so chopping off 10+ inches was a little traumatic. I told him to just do what he thought would look good and I absolutely LOVE my new hairstyle. He was absolutely amazing...sweet, intuitive and an excellent stylist. I will go back to him in a heart beat!

I was planning to donate to LOL and searched for a "special" place to have the cut. So, why not on Newbury Street? I didn't tell anyone at work and the day after my appointment they were all in shock. They loved it! Kyle did a fantastic job and has a easyness about him. I've given up on my regular hairdresser and continue to visit Kyle. Sometimes you just have to break free from old habits and try something new. Your hair will always grow back if you don't like it, but I don't think you could go wrong with Kyle.
Pros: Location, Friendliness, Ease of scheduling
Posted 05/03/06
I have been a client of Jayme's for a long time. He does my cut/color. He's also a very good friend of mine, who I look forward to sitting down, and catching up with.
There is a very comfortable feel about him, and the salon.
Pros: location, price, people
Cons: elevator??, lighting, seating

I did LOL with Kyle on a Tuesday a month ago. I've had bad short hair cut experiences so I wanted to make sure that i would still have almost shoulder length even after 10 inches was chopped off. I brought some pictures to show him styles i liked. When everything was done, I wasn't sure if i was totally satisfied. Kyle said that if after 3 days and i still didn't like it, that I could go back and he'll do it again for free. So I did. I still showed him several pics from their magazine and when it was done, this time I loved it!! I'm from Asia and had doubts with stylists here dealing with asian hair, but after a month of having my hair cut, I'm pretty satisfied with what Kyle has done. Major props to Kyle and especially for him doing LOL!!
Pros: free LOL on Tuesdays!, everyone is friendly, T accessible

I had appt for color & cut. Confirmed 2 days before appt, but the NIGHT before I got a message that my stylist couldn't cut my hair, but I could still get it colored.
I'm in N.H. so it's inconvenient & costly for me to drive 3 hrs to only do half of appt. They close at 4pm so I couldn't find out if someone else could cut my hair.
9:30am next day I'm told another stylist can cut it. I request the owner & they say yes, but prices are more than orig. stylist by $30! I told them I had a coupon & they said it wan't for the owner & offered NOTHING, so I canceled.
I can't believe they didn't offer ANYTHING & weren't more curtious. If this says ANYTHING about the way business is run, I'm glad I didn't waste my time.
Cons: clearly don't care, about getting new, customers

I donated my hair to Locks of Love and Kyle was my stylist. Ive had long hair my whole life and was extremely scared for the change. Kyle was so nice extremely friendly. He Made me look like a new woman. Im so happy with my haircut Im telling everyone to go there. If you want a young , hip, instyle hair stylist who understands your needs and wants for cuts and color kyle is your man.
Posted 02/17/06
I was very nervous for the big 10in cut, not just for the cut, but because it was Valentine's Day and I was surprising my boyfriend with the cut. But Kyle was great, after the traumatic cut, he gave me an awesome head massage, allowing me to begin breathing again. Although I was apprehensive about the cut, Kyle made it it's short and fabulous, my boyfriend loves it and it seems that my coworkers love the new look too.
Pros: The cut was free!, Friendly Receptionist
Cons: offered Tues only

I was more then amazed when I found the perfect hair stylists EVER! For years Ive been looking for someone who could give me the right look and style for just me. After so many horrible haircuts I stopped getting my hair done. Friends recommend Betty Hawes who is a stylist at DeKwa. I was more then pleased when she was finished. She is fun and understands what I wanted done. I recommend Betty to everyone I had my hair layered everyone at work LOVES IT ! When I saw her she was about to have her baby I hope everything went well for her and please GO SEE BETTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It can be hard to find someone who can give you a good haircut. I am so glad that I found Denean (one of the owner's) at DeKwa. She has been cutting my hair for about 5 years now and I haven't had a bad haircut yet. She is a great stylist and always takes the time to make sure everthing is just the way I want it.
The salon is in a great location on Newbury, just around the corner from Copley Square. They have great hours and the staff is very friendly. The salon itself is stylish, but laid back and unpretensious.
I can't recommend this salon enough... if you are tired of a bad haircut or just looking for something new, give them a try, you won't regret it.
Pros: price, style, atmosphere
Cons: none
Posted 12/29/05
I received a great and very stylish haircut. I get tons of compliments and am very happy with it.
Posted 12/09/05
I went to Kwan for a hair cut after reading the comments on this site.
Her skill totally amazed me. Although I came from Asia and had been in good salons in Asia, I still give her two thumbs up for her good sense and taste. As said in other comments, she really listens to what you want, and cares about how you look good. Her skill is superb. The price is expensive for me as a student, but you wont regret, at least, I did not.
Pros: friendly staff
Cons: parking
Posted 11/26/05
This was my first visit and This was the best hair cut I've received from any salon. I love it - it is easy to style and looks good.
Posted 10/10/05
I've been going to Kwan for years. i recommend her to any hair victims i see who ask my advice on stylists. she knows how to save a bad dye job, or cut, and can make you leave the salon looking like a new person. she understands her clients and is good at acheiving what they want. she does not pressure you into going shorter, or changing your cut drastically, the way some stylists do. she is also very helpful suggesting products, but never forces them on you. She is especially good with asian hair, and it shows by her extensive roster of asian clients. (she is asian too). but her roster is not limited to asians. she has curly haired, blondes, redheads and all likes of hair kinds coming to her religiously!
go and see kwan if you want a relaxing no pressure experience at a good rate!
Pros: friendly, competitive pricing, relaxing atmosphere
Cons: parking difficult

I've had long hair for about 8 years, and i decided i needed a change. i went into Dekwa to donate my hair to Locks of Love. Kyle, the stylist, was so great. He quickly took off about 10 inches of my hair, which was a bit shocking, but what he did with the hair that was left was amazing. He convinced me to put some layers in it, and it's clear that he knows what he's doing because i love my new short hair. i'll definitely be going back for another cut with Kyle!
Pros: Donates to charities, Friendly staff
Cons: Parking
Posted 09/30/05
I went to dekwa for a very drastic cut from long to short to donate my hair to locks of love, Kyle was very helpful made me feel at ease and suggested what wouold look best for me. I came out feeling renewed and beautiful, I would recommend this place to anyone...Plus they offer you water, tea or coffee when you go...very good service
Pros: great service, wonderful atmosphere, professional
Cons: none

I went to Dekwa for a drastic 10' cut to donate to Locks of Love. Kyle did a great job and the atmosphere was pleasant. Plus they packaged the hair and filled out the necessary info for me.
Posted 09/27/05
Me: long straight hair, very boring but optimal for donation to the charity. Today: Kyle was so incredibly sweet, supportive, and encouraging so now I have this gorgeous short hairstyle, one of the wildest ones I ever allowed myself to have and I am totally hooked. :)
Pros: Kyle, LOL, friendly

I strolled into Dekwa on a friday afternoon, carrying the baggage of a stressful week and the usual nerves that accompany seeing a new stylist.
As soon as i arrived, the receptionist offered me a glass of wine! I loved the soothing music and tranquil environment.. I met with Kwan soon after and we discussed what i wanted. Very receptive!
i headed back to the sinks where i recieved the most relaxing shampoo/scalp massage from the friendly hair washer.
The conversation with Kwan was great, but not forced and the precision with which she worked astounded me. As she blew my hair dry, she gave me tips to style it and what variations i could do. price is reasonable/ well worth it. Thank You Kwan! It has been sometime since i went in, but my hair is growing out gracefully and im counting the days to my next appointment
Pros: kwan!, prices, atmosphere
Cons: parking

I am a man who use to go to barbers to get a haircut until someone gave me a gift certificate to go to DeKwa's where I received a haircut from Deneen. She gave me the best hair cut I ever had. I no longer go to barbers. She is the best. I love her professional expertise and her personality is great also. The staff is very polite and accomodating. I feel like a king when I go there.
Pros: Deneen, staff, friendlieness of all
Cons: I cannot think on one
Posted 08/11/05
I am not one to go out and get an expesnive haircut...in fact I find it a complete waste of money. That is until I went to Dekwa, and got my hair cut by Deneen. Now I am totally hooked, can't get my haircut anywhere else, ever. The stylists are professional and innovative, the rest of the staff is very friendly. Very chill environment, nothing pretentious about it at all. Easy to get a last minute appointment. Since it's on Newberry, parking is a bit of a pain...but that's pretty much the only bad thing I can say about this place. Highly recommended!
Pros: Great Haircuts, Nice People, Chill Environment
Cons: Parking
Posted 07/26/05
I'm new to the area. Went to a "recommended" place and got a very botched, layered cut. Hated it. Found DeKwa and Deneen and through their e-mail cuts, had an appointment in less than 24 hours. No loud music; no frills; very cool receptionist with access to much needed water (served in glass glasses no less). Deneen is marvelous, professional, an artisan, and intelligent. She asked what I wanted; I gave her my usual, I have no clue about hair routine and she had suggestions... which I agreed to and which she followed flawlessly. I left unsure about what it looked like. Washed it the next day and was amazed at the transformation. Kudos. I will definitely be going back.
Pros: professionalism, artistry, receptionist
Cons: absolutely none
Posted 07/18/05
I have been to Dekwa many times and I have never had a less than fabulous experience. Deneen does a great job. She helps come up with a new style for me at each visit. I just tell her I need a change and she runs 2 or 3 ideas by me. It always looks great, even when I leave the salon and style my hair for myself. Several of my friends have also visited Deneen--all leave quite pleased, and return to her again. I am moving out of Boston and I am so sad to have to leave Deneen. It will be difficult to find a stylist that will make me as happy as I have been with her.
Pros: Deneen, Coloring, deals and e-cuts
Cons: can't think of one!
Posted 07/16/05
I looked up the Locks for Love program in Boston and found that Dekwa participated in several ways; some stylists will offer discounts, a straight cut is available for free, or the option that I chose-you can have a full cut and style with their junior stylist Kyle. I grew my bangs out when I was 6 and now 22 years later I decided to donate it so needless to say I was a little nervous. Kyle did a fantastic job on my hair and everyone has been raving about it for the last two weeks! I have already booked another regular appointment with him. The salon itself is very comfortable and the staff are all very friendly.
Pros: Atmosphere, Staff
Posted 07/15/05
The colors. the lighting, the amazing scalp massage, along with a glass of wine can relax anyone. Super friendly environment with great stylists- my best experience on Newbury Street.
Pros: Talent, Friendly, Professional
Cons: none
Posted 07/08/05
The worst haircut in my life! I had to go to another salon to get it fixed. The stylist at the other salon was horrified by my haircut. It's taken me over a year to grow out, and I'm very nervous about cutting my hair again! I don't think my stylist was familiar with Asian hair b/c my hair was NOT liking the cut...
Posted 03/03/05
best stylist ever! fun, talented and on the cutting edge. worth every penny!
Pros: friendly staff, great products, wine after 5pm!
Posted 02/26/05
I've been seeing Deneen for years and have never had a bad experience. She always listens to me and gives me the cut I ask for.
The salon is upscale without having a stuffy feel. It's very inviting and does not have loud music blasting like some other places.
The receptionists are always polite and accommodating.
I would follow Deneen wherever she went. I've also gotten my girlfriend to start going (but I think that may partially be because it's the only female owned salon on Newbury Street).
The cuts aren't cheap but they aren't as expensive as some other places and are definitely worth it.
Pros: Deneen
Posted 01/30/05
I've been to DeKwa Salon a couple of times based on a strong recommendation from a good friend. On both occassions, Kwan cut my hair. On the first occassion, it was a good haircut but nothing too complicated just a trim for long hair straight hair. I went away satisfied and excited that I may have found a great new stylist. However, the second time around I was extremely disappointed with the cut and will never go again. Because she spent a lot of time socializing with the hairdresser next to me and didn't listen to my needs and pay attention, I ended up with a really bad haircut. I now have two distinct layers of hair and have lost too much length in my hair right now to fix it. Don't go, you won't get what you paid for!!!!
Posted 01/07/05
HAVING AN ATTACHMENT TO MY HAIR , GOING TO A NEW HAIRDRESSER IS AS BAD AS GOING TO THE DOCTORS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THEY COULD DO TO YOU, HOWEVER, JAMES HAS CUT AND COLORED MY HAIR SO WELL THAT EVEN MY MALE COWORKERS NOTICED THE CHANGE. THEY ARE VERY ATTENTIVE TO YOUR STYLE NEEDS THERE AND FOR THE PRICE AND STYLE THAT I GOT, I COULDNT BE HAPPIER. I LIVE 45 MINUTES FROM THE SALON, BUT IT IS WORTH THE DRIVE 120%
Pros: EMPLOYEES, ATMOSPHERE
Posted 09/20/04
I've been getting my haircut with DeKwa for years - They provide wonderful service & the best cuts. I often go in with only a general idea of the cut I want & Deneen always gives me the perfect look. Best of all, my hair looks beautiful the next day when I style it! I highly recommend the team!
Pros: Top Quality Cuts, Beautiful Salon, Great Location
Posted 04/06/04
I came to DeKwa a week ago on the recommendation of a friend and I am a total convert--can't imagine going anywhere else again. The atmosphere of the salon was pleasant and relaxed, the staff seemed friendly and happy, and my stylist was amazing--very efficient, focused and professional but easygoing and easy to talk to. She sized up what I wanted very quickly and gave me exactly the cut I'd been hoping for. I was happy when I left the Salon and now a week later, I'm convinced that this is the best haircut I've ever had (none of that disappointment you have sometimes once you wash out the effects of the blowdry and the styling gel!) Slightly more expensive that my usual cuts, but so worth it.
Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, Skilled service, Nice staff
Posted 02/06/04
Kwan is one of the best stylists I have ever had. I went from below shoulder length to short and it is hands-down the best haircut I've ever received. She is really great about knowing what looks good on you and what you can work with. Friends have raved about my new hair and 2 of them have already gone to see Kwan. She's the BEST!!!
Posted 12/17/03
I'm probably pickier than other guys in choosing a stylist and I have had Deneen cut my hair for 3 years now and have never been disappointed. She gave me the cut that I asked for (trendy yet easily adaptable for work) and what other salons couldn't deliver and she also taught me how to style my hair to make it look just as good as when I when I walk out of Dekwa. Her staff is incredible and go out of their way to make you feel welcome unlike other Newbury St. salons. I recently moved an hour away from Boston but I will always make the trip to Deneen.
Pros: friendly, experienced

After moving to Boston this year, I was excited to find Deneen at DeKwa. I went into the salon wanting a cut above my shoulders, which I had never had. She did a great job. On a subsequent visit, she gave me advice upon request about how to tame the natural curls which I usual straighten out. Now I alternate between curly and straight...thanks to Deneen.
Posted 12/08/03
I have found my salon. Deneen at DeKwa will style my hair from now on. I never spent time with my hair only ponytails. Deneen gave me a fresh new look, my hair looks great and feels healthy. I have wavy hair and always lean toward the straight looks. Instead of discouraging the idea and pushing her own, as many salons do, Deneen suggested a cut that would give me the look I wanted, but use my hair texture to minimize work. I get compliments everywhere I go, the cut is perfect and the blond/red highlights are fun. I look forward to my next appointment at DeKwa. Styling hair is not just a trade, it's a craft, an art. Deneen has this talent - hair is her medium and she creates like an artist. It is a place to relax, feel great and enjoy. Just go- I recommend it !
Pros: helpful, relaxing, talented
