I moved to FL where I received the worst hair cut to date! So on my trip home to visit family I returned to my stylist Deneen Chabot in the hopes that she could do something for me. Not only did she manage to "fix" my hair, she made it look fashionable! I have since moved back to the area and not only does she cut my hair, but she also cuts the hair of my 4 and 2yr. old girls. She is very patient and incredibly talented! Thanks Deneen and to all who have made DeKwa a success!!
Pros: Professional, Great Value, Personalized Service

Everything about DeKwa is wonderful--from the sweet receptionists who offer you coffee to the attentive stylists who spend time looking at your hair and suggesting a style. I donated my hair recently and ended up with the best haircut of my life! You get what you pay for, and DeKwa is more than worth the money.

I've been a ponytail/bun girl for as long as I've been alive and wanted a change. However I had no experience with any styling products or techniques and was, frankly, scared. Richard helped me find a style that was easy for me to take care of and very flattering. He patiently explained everything I needed to know to style my hair and I left feeling like a whole new person.
Pros: Friendly atmosphere, Great advice, Relaxing
Cons: Pricey for a Student, Cash only tips

Call it an epiphany. Call it a cosmic connection. I would sincerely exhaust all superlatives in describing DeKwa. Kwan is the perhaps the most gifted Hair Stylist I've ever been serviced by. She never fails to deliver. Kwan, unlike so many of her contemporaries, focuses her attention on a style that works best for me. She never imposes but listens-a rarity in an age where 'client service' is widely considered an oxymoron. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn through our many converations that she is well versed in a myriad of topics-Gourmet Cooking, Architecture, the Red Sox and Celtics, Film, Current Events and World Affairs, etc. DeKwa is small enough and initmate enough to make me feel like a welcomed friend. I'm always impressed by the fact that Suzanne-staff manager, seems to remember little idiosyncracies about me.
Pros: Good Location, Service, Original/Unique

Over the summer of 2002 I donated my hair, and I received the best haircit from Richard. He made the transition from having long hair to short hair very easy...

Kwan works miracles with the likes of all the MIT nerds I have sent to her. They come out transformed for their interviews and then they go on to work at Goldman and Mckinsey etc. I have enjoyed her hairstyling for over 10 years and even my wife who has very selective taste from new york city chose Kwan as her regular stylist.

As a male making my first trip to a Newbury St salon, I was happy to receive genuinely friendly, high-quality service without any pretension or attitude. I got a great haircut that didn't take hours, plus a very relaxing head-massage. A free glass of wine was a nice touch, too. On my recommendation, a number of the guys in my office have gone to Dekwa and had similarly excellent results.
Pros: great service, fantastic manager, comfortable space

Going to DeKwa for my highlights and hair cut is the ultimate treat. It's a peaceful uncluttered space with a great selection of music. Kwan is very talented and focused on producing great color and hair styles. The staff are consistently nice too, from the stylists to reception to the wonderful people who wash hair. DeKwa also carries great hair products--very convenient. I've been going to DeKwa since it opened, and I've never been disappointed.
Pros: location, great products, great service
Cons: not much parking

Granted, among men in large law firms simply having hair is rare; however, in mine I have won awards for being remarkably well-coifed. I owe it all to DeKwa's Kwan Chan who has been tending to my hair for over a decade. My visits to DeKwa yield not only the haircut I need to look my best for an important meeting or presentation, but the atmosphere helps bolster that relaxed, self-assured feeling that ultimately gets the deal done. The music, pleasant decor, hearty cup of coffee and professional staff all combine to make DeKwa the place to find two of the most elusive elements of success: looking your best and feeling your best.
Pros: Great cut, Great atmosphere, Great people

I've had my hair cut/styled at most of the salons on Newbury, and to be honest, I was never really pleased. After a particularly poor cut at Giuliano's, I went back to getting it cut at LaFlamme in Harvard Square. That is, until, I got it cut/styled at Dekwa. Apart from the entirely different atmosphere (soothing zen, as opposed to the salsa blaring from the two floors below), my stylist Richard asked precisely what I wanted my hair to look like. He also respected the fact that I don't usually like talking while getting a cut. Fantastic skill, both with cutting (with a guarded blade) and coloring guys hair.

Best haircut I've had in a long long time. Very nice people as well.

it's hard to believe that, on a street littered with a surfeit of salons, i could never find an establishment with kind and capable staff. i dread speaking with receptionists because of their appalling hauter-than-thou attitudes and unfriendliness. here, however, the receptionist is accomodating and gracious. richard seems to possess every quality i'd been seeking in a stylist: receptive and attentive, he handles his razor deftly and with instinctive skill, giving me one of the best haircuts i've ever received. his color is just as exemplary, rendering a rather involved multiple-process job with the most painstaking care. so many times, i've left salons with a horrendous and expensive shellacked beehive-mullet that i've had to wash out as soon as i got home, and i'd have to wait a week for said cut to grow in before it would look semi-presentable. not so this time. props, richard. you rock.

This is such a beautiful place. Calm, quiet, free of that "Newbury St." crazyness that can get old. I've gone to 2 different stylists there and they both did fantastic jobs. I felt they really listened to what I wanted from my cut and color and used it in conjuction with what their instincts as stylists told them would be most beneficial for me. That's a hard balance to get from a salon (in my experience anyway) and I was lucky to find it here. Wine in the evening or coffee in the morning are just fun perks.
Pros: Stylist Skill, Shampoo/Scalp Massage, Great Atmosphere
Cons: No Waxing, No Nail Services

DeKwa is a salon that manages to create an environment richly afforded with ambient music, trendy comfortable furniture, and original art work. The staff is very friendly, good-looking, and attentive. I enjoyed reading the eclectic architectural magazines while sipping a warm cup of ginger-spiced, mint asian tea. Everything about this salon screams: ORIGINAL. Kwan, my stylist, surpassed my expectations of what I've always wanted with my hair. The right color, texture and managibility. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Pros: Season Stylist, Location, Scalp Massage/ Shampo
