I have enjoyed Len's outstanding service since 1996. He pays very close attention to detail and always works to mix up colors that add much needed perceived depth and texture to my fine, thin hair. He takes his time with the cut and color to ensure everything is just right and I have always felt very happy with the results of my cut and highlights for many weeks following my visit. It's cool when you can think, "I love my haircut" when you are at home doing your own hair. How many times have you been to the stylist and been unable to replicate what they do?

I moved out of the city years ago and whenever it works out I try and book a visit with Len while I'm down there. I have not found anyone who comes close to his expertise and I always look forward to our visits.

I am not sure if he is more expensive or the same as other stylists in San Francisco- I've been out of that market for a while, but I've never regretted going. He does an outstanding job.

I found this AMAZING stylist (and colorist) Len by doing an engine search which ultimately lead me to Citysearch. Countless reviews followed, so naturally I just had to check out this stylist. My stylist (who I saw for years, just up and disappeared....I think there was some drama about her suddenly leaving town) and I was in shock! My stylist of 11 years gone! But thankfully I connected to Len. He cut my hair in a style that was more up to date, but not too trendy. He highlighted my hair using 4 colors! (to create a rich, warm blend of honey, caramel, and two lighter blonde shades) boy, when it says that Len is a "blonding expert" (I guess that means highlighting specialist?) they were not kidding! My hair is absolutely gorgeous!!! Even better than my previous stylist and colorist! Len also made me feel completely comfortable and welcome. He suggested(or as he put it "educated" me) on hair care products (of which the salon was running a special 25% off on 2 or more products!) so naturally I bought everything Len recommended, I just hope my husband doesn't use them on his hair in the shower! I can already feel a difference in my hair! I have received countless compliments and I am hooked for life on Len! The best part is I get to answer people, when they ask, who does your hair?! I proudly say, and with a giggle, Len does my hair! (Love that!) Go see him everyone he truly is the BEST stylist and colorist in San Francisco, I shopuld know I have been to all of them! (Dipietro Todd, Joseph Cozza, 77 Maiden lane, Cinta, Mr Whistle something or another?) and they all cannot compare with this AMAZING stylist! Thanks Len! I am so glad I located Len at Frange Blue Salon, this guy really knows how to cut a Man's hair! (and I imagine women's hair as well?!) He is SUPER talented, a nice guy (I always enjoy my visits with him) and the salon is really nice as well, not stuffy, not stuck up, but a nice salon. Len has been in the business for a while and it shows he really knows what he is doing! I haven't been disappointed yet (and don't expect to be either) and consistency counts for a lot! Go to Len and be spoiled, you'll be hooked like I and so many other people are!

I found Len by doing an engine search on line (he was all over the place!) and I figured I had to check him out. I just moved here from Boston and had a wonderful stylist (and seperate colorist) that I left behind. At first I was hesitant, but after reading the MANY reviews on Len and looking at his impressive website I was hooked. I scheduled an appointment with him for highlights and a cut (I liked the fact that he does both color and haircuts, rather than having to see two seperate people for each) and Wow! did he deliver! Not only that, but I was made to feel completely comfortable with him. Len was also very knowledgeable about hair care products (he recommended the Rene Feurterer products from France, and the products have really improved my hair!) He is a wonderful communicator and he really listened to my concerns and suggestions. I will tell all of my co-workers and friends about this amazing stylist(colorist) THANKS Len! I am hooked! Oh and the fact that you can schedule on line (haven't run into that with any other stylists) is also a HUGE plus!

I had to go someplace closer to home when I had my second kiddo... they say you don't know what you have until it's gone and while I knew I always loved my hair when I left Len, I didn't appreciate how skilled he was until I went to a couple of other stylists. He is a far superior technical hair cutter than most! He has a great understanding of my hair's texture and thickness (lack thereof) and how to cut it so it looks stylish with a 'do that is still manageable for me. My color looks awesome as well. Fantastic cut and color coupled with great company and topped off with a happy space in an easy location = HAIR UTOPIA! Thank you, Len! xo

Len has been doing my hair for 6 months. It is healthier and in better shape than when I came to him. He listens when I ask him not to cut it too much, since I am always trying to grow it out. He is also amazing with highlights, which is hard to do on my red hair.

Len knows how to work with my hair, which is fine but thick and curly. I always leave his salon feeling glamorous. He is also wonderful to talk to and I just enjoy being in his salon with him.

Len has been cutting my hair for the past 6 months. Once he figured out what worked for me and my hair, he has consistently delivered the best hair cut I have had in my adult life. Do yourself a favor and make some time to sit down with Len. I have been to every barber, salon, and stylist in town. Len exceeds any expectations you could have.

Quite simply Len was able to turn my "hair apathy" around. Thanks to a recommendation, I made the upgrade from "getting a haircut" to "seeing a stylist" and I can't thank that person enough for the advice. Len is super easy going, friendly and from the start cared to make sure we both were at the same level before he made the first suggestion as to "what to do with it". He showed me how far style could go and I can fully appreciate how talented he is at his craft when I realize how much of a positive thing it is to know when I look great thanks to a great hairstyle.

Frange Blue (the venue) is also terrific. The owner is very friendly and hospitable and provides the amenities that I have come to expect having Len as my stylist. The location is very convenient near Powell Station.

I'm really fortunate that I found Len a couple of years ago. I had been driving to Sacramento from the Bay Area because I couldn't find a stylist that could give me a decent cut (I'm really selective). Finally, after 4 years and some really bad haircuts in the city, Len was referred to me by a colleague - thank goodness, no more 196 mile round trips for a good hair cut! The first time that I walked into Len's salon, he warmly greeted me and took time to get to know my hair and the style that I preferred. He wasn't shy to offer suggestions that would best suit my hair type and face shape. No matter how many times Len has cut my hair, he still takes the time to ask, "how was the cut and style - still working for you?" and if I want to try something new and different, he always has a great suggestion - not too drastic, just enough to change it up a bit - I like that! You will see for yourself that Len is a seasoned professional who really knows hair - best cut in town, no lie.

Len works in a boutique salon ( Frange Blue) with lots of windows and air ... you leave feeling completely restored and 10 years younger! His pleasant demeanor and affability makes the whole experience a delight! Len not only updates your cut to keep you current, he does it in such a way, you don't loose what is unique to you. I also had my eyebrows done for the first time ever, by Rochelle. I was pretty nervous, as I am really light and I didn't want to leave looking like groucho! I was very happy and now for the first time in my life I have eyebrows! and they look totally natural. When I moved to San Fran a few years ago, I had no idea where to go to get things done-especially my hair. After several very disappointing places, I finally found Len. He knows hair, and more importantly for me, he knows MY hair. And he styles your hair in a way that you don't need to style it everyday-he knows how to make chic low maintenance cuts. He is a really friendly and knowledgable stylist and it's always a pleaure to visit him. If you want a top notch cut, you definitely want to come to him. He is the best!

I first met Len about 6 months ago. I had been to two hair salons and the haircuts I received kept getting worse. I did a quick search and found Len. I was able to book an appointment that day. I walked in and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I was very nervous because I had just encountered those last two horrible experiences. Len came out to greet me and I knew right then that we were going to have a long lasting relationship - well when it came to my hair that is. He made me feel so comfortable and so at home. I was embarrassed at the way my hair looked - I sat down in the chair and we chatted about it. I felt comfortable enough to say "do what you want - just make me pretty" and damnit that is what he did. I have been going to Len ever since. I sneak away on my lunch break - I have the best lunch break ever. We laugh "allot" - share some great stories and I get an amazing haircut. Awesome way to spend my lunch break every 6 weeks.

I have been going to see Len for over two years and can't imagine entrusting my hair to anyone else. He listens to what I want done, has great ideas of his own, and works his magic very easily. He is a natural at his chosen profession, and it's obvious he enjoys what he does. Each cut, color, and style is perfectly done. I give him my highest recommendation.

First I should say that I am not the reviewing type. I have never loved or hated anything enough to review it. But Len is worth it. Before Len I had never gone to the same hairstylist twice in the city. I hopped around because I could never find someone I could trust. Well 3 years ago I found Len. I've been going to Len since then because he gives me predictably good results.

His haircuts grow out really nicely and they look fabulous without any styling. I am a low maintenance girl. I can't operate a hairdryer and a brush at the same time. I also hate using product in my hair. I just blowdry it out, brush it, and go. And somehow Len makes it look great.

He's also a very nice person and fun to talk to. Last, but not least, it's so easy to book an appointment with him. You can do it 24 hours a day with his online or phone service. Go with Len. You won't be sorry.

Len is so talented! Not only is he a blast to talk to for hours while I get my hair done, but I have total faith in his skills and sense of style. My hair had not been touched for 7 months and he brought it back to life with the shiniest color I've ever had and a spankin' new, hot, style that was exactly what I asked for (that's rare). Plus, I got to enjoy a lot of laughter with a great glass of Cabernet. A very high end experience. Thanks Len!

Len has been cutting my hair for THIRTEEN, yes 1-3, years. It's been super short, above the shoulder, below the shoulders, medium, long, etc. I have naturally wavy hair and if you cut it wrong, it sticks up or out. Len understand my hair and all it's personalities. He is an excellent consultant when it comes to change. As well as explaining different style options.
He's my longest relationship! I always look forward to seeing Len. Not only does he make me look fabulous but I enjoy our chats.
Give Len a try, you wont be sorry! You will look fabulous and enjoy your time with someone who is genuine and fun.

He is honest and down-to-earth without making you feel bad. I cannot say enough kind things about him. You won't be sorry if you go to him.

I have been seeing Len since he owned his own salon (Utopia) 9 years in total! He has aways given me the BEST haircuts (you can tell after 4-5 weeks when the cut still looks good!) as well as the BEST highlights, so natural, not zebra stripped, or Un-natural looking. Sad to say my husband and I are moving back to New York, and I am leaving this wonderful stylist and colorist behind! I'm certain I will locate a good person in New York, but probably not someone that I connected with so well!. Each appointment was a catch-up on our respective lives and the trials and tribulations of life. Len is a warm, considerate and funny guy, who also happens to be the BEST at what he does (namely haircutting and coloring) So goodbye for now Len, I will miss you and your amazing work! Perfection! Len is brilliant. I've been anxious to have my hair done with him since I first heard about his services and visited his site. Just as his site speaks with cutting edge class and sophistication, his work does as well - and then some. He is so knowledgeable about what styles will work best for the texture of your hair, the contour of your face, etc. He makes both the health and beauty of your hair his priority and shares every bit of information about the products he uses and swears by. Ok confession time! I am a former hair-hopper! I went to almost every top salon here in the city (Cinta, 77 Maiden, Joseph Cozza) and either they promised something they couldn't deliver or the stylist was rude and the experience uncomfortable and the hair looked good but with so much money spent and then not a word from the person doing my hair?! Then I found Len. He is down to earth, personable and funny and talented! He had an impressive web site, and even the ability to book the appointment on-line, so I tried him. I am so happy I did! He gave me the most natural, shiny looking highlights! (he used 3 colors!) and the cut, simply amazing! I can't wait to go back to him! I am a former hair-hopper! I found my guy, he is the best! The salon (Frange Blue) is very nice, recently expanded to a larger space(it was a bit small before) but in my opinion ranks right up there with the others. Ladies, if you want to become a former hair-hopper like me than go see ths guy (Len) you will be glad you did(and so will your hair!) the salon is nice as well and everyone is VERY friendly (a first for me in a salon!)

My daughter Megan first started going to Len when he owned his own salon that he closed I belive last year? Anyway, I always loved what he did to my daughter's hair, but at the time I was commited to my stylist of 18 years and didn't want to cheat on her. She met a guy, got pregnant and moved to L.A. I had to find another stylist and he was there all the time. I immediately had a connection with Len, nice guy, funny, engaging and talented! I loved my hair! The cut was even better than my other stylist (don't tell her that!) So now both my daughter and I go to Len (I'm trying to get my husband to go to Len as well,Then the entire family would be going to him) he likes his barber (I hate the way his hair looks!) Anyway, go try this wonderfully talented stylist, you'll be glad you did! I also scheduled my appointment on-line (how convenient!), hardly any stylists have that !

I located Len on the internet, I simply keyed in best hairstylist in San Francisco and his name came up all over the internet. After reading his reviews on Citysearch, as well as on his web site, I decided to give him a try. Well, Len, you live up to your reputation! I went in with my expectations on hold (I thought so many positive reviews and not one bad one?, too good to be true!) I was wrong! Len met my expectations (and then some!) The cut was every thing I asked for, the layers, the way my hair layed after he started drying my hair with his fingers (before he got out his HUGE round brush) I was in love with my hair (I hadn't felt that way since I left Chicago and left my old stylist behind!) Len I love my hair! After my appointment I made a follow up haircut and color appointment (hopefully he will able to deliver on the color end as well! I'm pretty certain he will!) I took my hair to Len and I got EXACTLY what I wanted. Both the cut and the color were above expectation for my first time at a salon and the man himself is a friendly, humorous and chatty individual who makes the hours you spend in the chair seem but like minutes. The salon itself is upscale but not intimidatingly so and although they were still unpacking into the space when I visited, they were still able to lay their hands on a good bottle of red wine and share a glass with me as I waited for the color to take!
You may think that they are a bit on the pricey side, I paid just under $200 for cut and color, however, the cut will last me for the best part of a year and will look good the entire time. This alone justifies the cost in my mind as I travel extensively and cannot afford the time or the gamble of random haircuts of uncertain quality.

All in all, I highly recommend you forego your next mediocre hair appointment and instead spend the money here, as Len will take your unruly mop and make it look like your best feature!

Cons: OKAY It's a bit pricey but you get what more than what you pay for at this salon.

Simply put Len is the best Stylist anywhere! I have been a loyal client of his for 4 years. I first started seeing him at his former salon (Utopia) after reading about him in the SF Chronicle. I am continuously amazed at how he cuts and colors my hair, but it looks totally natural, that's the best part. I had tried other stylists and they were okay, but Len is not only talented he is a nice guy, good conversationalist,and listens to your needs. All I can say is rush to see this amazing Stylist and you too will get to experience TRUE hair satisfaction!

I have been hairdating Len for quite some time (7 years to be exact) I feel a little guilty that it has taken me this long to write him a review, but here goes..... I first started seeing him at his former salon Utopia, and have followed Len since he closed his former salon last spring. I didn't care much for the first salon he ended up in (Level 4) but what can I say?! I would let this guy do my hair in a garage! I love his new salon Frange Blue. From the moment you walk in there is a good vibe. Everyone is friendly, the place is nicely decorated and the best part is.....Len! He is consistent! He listens to exactly what you want, he suggests,without dictating (like some hairdressers I have gone to in the past) He has an amazing web site, and you can even schedule on line through his web site, now if that isn't conveninet I don't know what is?! Go see him ladies you will be asked many times who does your hair and you can tell them Len does!

I just moved to town from a small town and wanted a new "do". I found Len through Citysearch, read his reviews and made an appointment. I have long hair, so trusting a new stylist is a leap of faith. What Len gave me was beautiful, soft and very stylish. He new the exact length my hair should be in order to get the maximum wave and yet still be long. Bravo Maestro!

I found Len doing a search engine on-line and also on here, I read his reviews, looked through his very well put together web site and decided to schedule an appointment.(I even made it on line on his web site!) I had been going to Joseph Carpucci salon, but he flaked on me one to many times, and the location was bad(very seedy!) I needed something in Union Square and I found it! I had highlights done as well as a cut, and Len did not disappoint, I guess that's why he has so many good reviews, it's true. I found the salon to be very cozy, nicely decorated and everyone smiled and greeted me, I felt so special. So if you want to be treated like an actual person when you go in to get your hair done(instead of just another head in a hiar salon) than go see this truly gifted artist. He will not disappoint. I started hair-dating Len back when I worked in the Fi-Di and he was heading the famous Utopia Salon. It was a good excuse for a 20 min walk from the office and I always came away more beautiful. Fast forward to now that I work from home (not complaining about that) and am infinitely lazier. I tried a couple really nice people within walking distance again and I am sorry to report that nice people do not equal good hair. Len is super professional and fun to spend all the time it takes to correct a Raggedy-Ann hair color. I am sorry for cheating, Len, please make my hair pretty again!! I recommend a visit to him at Level 4 Salon or wherever he may be.

I was fortunate enough to find this amazing stylist LEN on Citysearch. After reading his reviews and viewing his website, which was very impressive! I decided to make an appointment with him. I am so glad that I did! He totally lived up to all of the reviews written about him! I had tried several high-end salons here in the city, nobody seemed to get it right. Len listened to exactly how I wanted my hair(unlike the majority of stylists I tried before him) His skill level is obvious, he is highly detailed, and it was interesting to watch him cut my hair. Just left the other review on your salon listing. Sorry it's taken a while to leave this. My girl and I first started seeing Len at the salon he owned we were sorry to hear it closed. We followed Len to his new digs, cute, smaller than his old salon but nice. This guy knows how to cut some mean hair! whether you're looking for a men's cut (classic or cutting-edge) Len knows his stuff! My girlfriend also looks amazing every single time she goes to see Len. Besides he's a nice guy and listens to what a person wants. Thanks Man! You're the Bomb! Go see this guy! You'll thank me!

I followed Len to his new salon (Level 4) from his old salon (Utopia) that he closed a few month's ago. I so miss his old space, it was beautiful! Oh well! Anyway, Len is the most amazing hairstylist and colorist I have ever had the pleasure of going to. I have lived in both Chicago and New York and Len can hold his own compared to the stylists in those cities! He always cuts my hair exactly the way I want it (I have been seeing him for over 6 years and haven't had 1 bad hair day Ladies!) He also does my highlight just right. He uses 3 different colors which creates a natural vibrant look (and which doesn't scream roots! after 6 weeks) now that's a talented colorist! So do yourself a favor, go see this amazing guy! He's nice, funny, personable, and will make you (and your hair) look like a million dollars! He's also a big believer in the right hair care products for your hair, so your hair doesn't look and feel like straw!

Cons: He asks that tips be in the form of cash or check not on credit card, so know this before you go, even though he accepts credit cards, nothing else!

Giving Len carte blanche to do his best, he turned my thin, wavy mop of hair into a layered, styled masterpiece that garnered enormous compliments all night, and is now easy as pie to maintain and looks fabulous 24 hours a day. Thank you, Len!

I was referred to Len by a co-worker friend of mine. I had admired her hair for a long time and finally asked her where and who she gets her hair done by. Her answer Len does my hair. She gave me his card, I checked out his web site (under the same name, Len does my hair) and read the many reviews written about him. I was immediately impressed and decided to make an appointment with Len. He corrected my brassy looking color (I thought it looked okay but he thought it could look even better, and it did once he re-colored it!) I went from brassy to beautiful! He recommended products (I never thought I would pay that much for hair products but they are totally worth it, they keep my hair feeling like hair not straw, and the color holds up as well. Thank you Len for my beautiful hair, I love it and I will send all of my friends and fellow co-workers to see you, just don't get to busy so you can't see me! Ella G

I asked a girlfriend for a recommendation for a stylist, my old one decided to move to L.A. with her boyfriend and I thought Oh My God what am I going to do?! After receiving the card from my friend I was immediately impressed! The card looked nicely designed and I decided to check out Len's website (which was equally as nice!) I made an appointment still skeptical (I thought no-one, no matter how good he claims to be can live up to my old stylist that moved away, Boy was I wrong!) I went into see Len for a highlight and a cut and he lived up to his reputation! I was so pleased! He created a beautiful rich highlight which included 3 colors! (my old stylist and colorist only used 2 colors!) Apparently he owned his own Salon for 9 years, well I don't know what that was like but I immediately felt right at home in his new space. It is simply furnished, and unpretentious and nice. The receptionist greeted me and offered me a beverage (I opted for wine as I was nervous about what he would do) right away I felt I would be in good hands, even before drinking the wine! Len communicates very thouroughly. He works with you(not against you) and recommends products that suit your hair type and condition. So ladies if you want a stylist that listens to you, works with you and makes you look like a million dollars go see Len! Simply said he is the best!

Cons: A bit pricey(but worth every penny!) Tips are discouraged on credit card, so bring cash or your checkbook!

Len has been doing my hair for about two years. I first visited his salon thanks to CitySearch contributors? recommendations. He totally lived up to the reputation. He cut my hair so elegantly. Just right balance of layers, lightbang, etc. makes such a difference. I am particularly amazed with the subtlety he can apply to make my hair colored and highlighted. I have solid black hair, thick and lots of it. Before I got to Len, another fancy salon in SF gave my hair a massive highlight. The ?director-level? stylist told me it will be chocolate brown, but it was almost blond. Yah, like the one a Harajuku kid would have in his spiky hair. I asked for hairdo that is stylish, a little playful, but still professional looking. Len gets it. You don?t even need to tell him. Through a little casual chat, he grasps your life style and personality, and then gives a little hidden spice made of his creativity. It?s always fun to see the different styles he gives to different clients of his. You have to see it yourself. I?m sure you?ll agree with me!

Len gave me a great look. Short sassy, good color, not complicated. He'll start with offering options and build from there.

My friends have seen me with many cuts - this cut stood out.

Pros: easy walk from BART or Muni

As a regular client of Len's, I feel the need to tell others about the OUTSTANDING and CONSISTENT SERVICE that I ALWAYS receive, which is what keeps me going back! After having a great experience at a chic hair salon in Paris several years ago, I knew I could never return to my 'USUAL' place in the city upon returning home, since I had now experienced the best of Paris. So I set out on the task of finding a 'new' place I could call the best of San Francisco! That's when I found Len Handeland. The first time I met Len at a social gathering he commented on my hair cut and color not knowing that I had just returned from our 'Girls Paris Shopping Trip'! I mentioned that I was so amazed at how the 'proper' hair cut for one's face shape, and the color that matches one's skin tone makes all the difference in the end result! He could tell by my comments that I desired the same ongoing experince here in SF - a magically place and talented stylist who matches science, hair styles and trends to what's best for ones hair texture, facial structure and skin tone! He reveiled his profession and offered to take on the challenge AND did he ever! He's always courteous, ontime, and professional and ALWAYS delivers a great look! I'm such a big fan that if you want professional talent or advice you seek out the real experts! Even after having moved from 'the city' to Napa Valley, I still make the drive religiously to see Len every six weeks..... and you should to!

For the first time in my life I get my hair cut and colored without anxiety. I know that I will walk out looking like a million bucks EVERY TIME. We've all had stylists who do what we ask the first time or two, but then, as if controlled by some other force, quickly depart to an undesired color or an awful cut. Len consistently colors and cuts my hair beautifully every time. He knows how to adjust for changes in my hair (sometimes I forget to wear a hat and the sun will accelerate fading of color.) He always brings it back to the most natural looking blonde anyone would be thrilled to have. The subtle shades and perfect amount of highlighting are truly a work of art. When I leave I can't help feeling that everyone I pass is going to be jealous of my beautiful hair. Part of the beauty is that my hair is in superb condition. Two years ago, the first time I met with Len, my hair was almost like straw. . . lifeless, dull, fragile. I also had a poor choice of "cuts". I had always been told that because I had "thin" hair, I must have a blunt cut. Len said that my hair is NOT thin, but FINE. He proceeded to cut my hair so that it was flattering for me, and also gave me more fullness and volume. The products he uses and recommends have restored life to my hair. I never even liked my hair before going to Len. Now I LOVE my hair. If you are looking for someone who has talent and skill. If you are looking for someone who listens to you and gives you what you want. If you're looking for someone who genuinely cares that you are happy with the results . . . Len is the person for you. And he is also a delightful, personable guy who makes every effort for you to have a wonderful experience. He is absolutely the best colorist and stylist you will ever find.

Len is absolutely the best hair stylist I have ever had. He is very talented and really knows what looks good on different face shapes or colour of hair. I am very happy after each appointment with him and he is also quite a friendly person. I have never had more than 4 people complimented my hair but Len would be the one to make that happen.

The location is also very convenient as the salon is located only one block from Union Square. Everyone is very nice and polite. I definitely would recommend Len to anyone I know.
