Smoke-free, nontoxic coal keeps the oven infernal at Red Hook's latest pizzeria. The brief menu includes individual-sized pies crafted by chef Anselmo Garcia. There are two main options on the menu: Niapolitania pizza or pizza bianco. The former is shown above: a simple margherita-style pizza composed of tomato sauce, fresh mozzerella and basil. The pizza bianco is simply dressed with olive oil and salt. Either kind of pizza can be had as is (10-inch $6, 14-inch $14) or with added toppings like basil pesto, roasted peppers, wild mushrooms, onions, pepperoni, and so on ($1.75 each).

Editorial by Citysearch

The discovery of a coal oven in the old 360 space inspired veteran pizzaolo Anselmo Garcia to make a go of this Red Hook restaurant. City pizza geeks praise the thin, crackling crust and liberal use of fresh fior de latte mozzarella, and are more than happy to pay cash for a menu that is limited to pizzas and calzones exclusively. It?s about as bare-bones as you can get--brick walls, an oven and a few tables--but this is a purist?s pie place, and that suits this insular, loyal neighborhood just fine.

Key Points

  • Fresh Ingredients
  • Dine in or Take Out
  • Niapolitania & Bianco Pizza

The Inside Scoop

  1. Fun Fact - Anselmo’s was originally slated to be a bakery and cafe, but with the discovery of the coal oven in the building, Anselmo redirected his project.
  2. Know Before You Go - Anselmo’s is closed from 4pm to 5pm daily, when the pizza oven is cleaned.
  3. What To Drink - There’s no beer and wine license yet, but you can BYOB.

Not Good!

by NotGood

Very small pies, I thought the box was empty. You need two if your a family of three.

It didn't look anything like the website. Overpriced It was almost like eating a pice of pita bread with a little sauce/mozzarella
Im an Italian born & raised in Cobble Hill, this was disappointing.

Im not going to compare it to Grimaldi's because that place is a joke. Waiting on a long line with People that can't pronounce Ricotta, Mozzarella or Manicotti isn't a sign for "good Pizza ahead"

Di Fara is the BEST Pizza in NYC & its here in Brooklyn, Sam's on Court St is better then this place & Grimaldi's.

It seems like the reviews are fabricated. The one star I gave them is for the Cannoli, they were up there with Ferdinando's on Union St.

Think about it, they were going to be a "full line bakery cafe" until they found a brick oven. Does this sound like a Pizzeria that should be "getting better reviews then 40-year-old Pizzeria's" It does explain the good Cannoli.

Pros: Red Hook

Cons: Price, size.

Top-line pizza

by Bokchoy

Anselmo?s is a very pleasant surprise in the burgeoning Van Brunt eatery strip. A welcome addition! We ordered the ?house special? pizza which turned out to be their standard margarita pie with generous pepperoni and mushroom supplement. The brick oven made 14? thin crust special pie was sufficient for 2. It was well prepared but slightly burnt ? still a near excellent product. For native Brooklynites, the pizza is reminiscent to the pies at Lento?s Bensonhurst. Saturday night service was better than average - what you can expect in a Brooklyn establishment.

This is a BYOB place luckily with a mini-supermarket (for beer) on the other end of a short block and a corner liquor store diagonally across the street.

A definite return tripper!

Pros: Great pizza in a cozy setting

Cons: Poor public transportation access

Best Brick Oven in Brooklyn

by NYC311

I've headed out to Brooklyn numerous times just for the pizza here. The crust gives youa solid crunch and the cheese and sauce will leave your taste buds dancing. I wish they were around the corner here in NYC, but hey, a trek out to BK for the best pizza going is worth it. Check it out

Pros: Crunchy crust

Cons: no NYC locations!
