Matt Fisher (the former owner of Bad Dog Tavern) is behind this Lincoln Square American bistro where Troy Graves, also the executive chef at sister spot Eve, mans the stoves. Menu highlights include bulgogi-style pork belly with kimchee and braised short ribs with bacon-and-brie mashed potatoes and roasted root vegetables. The space sports a clean contemporary look with earth tones, chocolate leather chairs and walnut accents, including a walnut bar with an illuminated alabaster topper (under-lighting makes the bar "glow"). Tallulah has a covered patio, and it's even classed up with chandeliers.

In Short
Diners cozy into the linen-topped, dark wood tables at this understated boite made all the more intimate with its frosted sconces and wide mirrors. Traditional game meats, including Rabbitt Confit Papperdelle and Calves' Liver with Sweetbreads, get a makeover from Chef Troy Graves, formerly of Meritage Cafe. Rabbit also makes the brunch menu as a skillet tossed with Brussels sprouts, as well as traditional offerings like blueberry pancakes.

Key Points

  • Dinner and Patio Seating
  • Sunday Brunch
  • Tuesday BYOW

The Inside Scoop

  1. Private Rooms - For larger parties, ask about the back room with frosted glass partitions and overstuffed wrap-around booth seating that accommodates about 10 people, or on warmer nights, take advantage of the canopied back patio.
  2. When to Go - Despite having its liquor license, Tallulah has dubbed Tuesdays BYOW night to give patrons the option to bring their own wine (no liquor or beer please). The upside? No corkage fee.

Romantic Evening Out

by longhorn2289

My wife and I went to Tallulah on a Tuesday evening around 7pm. The host seated us right away at our table in the corner of the room. The decor of the room is very simple with everything being in white. For an appetizer we ordered the Steamed P.E.I Mussels which came in Thai coconut sauce. This tasted very nice and was a good portion for two people. The sauce was good for dipping with the bread at the table. For dinner my wife had the Seared Marlin which was the special for that night. I had the Braised Short Rib. The Marlin was cooked like you would expect a high quality Tuna to be cooked, raw in the middle. It tasted great with the Mango salsa that came with it. The Braised Short Rib was fall-apart tender, you really don't need a knife for this dish. It came with my favorite part of the meal, Roasted Root Veggies. These had an awesome taste and solid consistancy that I like in my food. Our server was attentive but not intrusive. I liked that a lot since I don't really want to be bothered when I'm eating. We are looking forward to our next visit when we can try some of the other dishes on the menu that looked good.

Pros: food, ambience, fast service

Cons: none

Rabbit for breakfast?

by WindyCityGourmet

I was anxiously awaiting the opening of this place for what seemed like ages. The interior looked nice and it is walking distance to my apartment, so I had hoped this would be my new fav. I was sadly disappointed. Weird vegetarian dishes and strange items that don't seem to fit on the same menu. Rabbit for breakfast? No thank you. Not worth the $$$.

Tallulah

by frescina

Two friends and I dined at Tallulah last night (4/4/08). We were eager to experience what I had been told was a lovely restaurant. For the most part, the food and service lived up to the hype.

I ordered the salmon with black truffle gnocchi - sounds great, right? Unfortunately, the salmon was far less than medium-rare and the gnocchi was even more of a disappointment. There was absolutely NO FLAVOR at all: no black truffle, not even a single hint of seasoning!

One of my friends had the steak frites (lovely), well prepared and tastey. The other had the fish special of the evening (halibut with strawberries?). Sounded odd to me, but she liked it except for the fish being every so slightly overcooked.

The server thoughtfully gave us our two delicsious desserts for free (chocolate peanut butter mousse - yum, and the crumble/cobbler, also very good), which was kind of her and much appreciated in light of the disappointing entree.

So, by this time, I'm enjoying the experience and thinking I'll definitely revisit this place again.

Then, everything came to a skreetching halt!

The host or whoever he was came over and, I swear, bluntly said: "Um, we kinda need this table." I was sooooo offended I was speechless. Now, being a frequent diner and reviewer I completely understand the need to turn over tables in a small restaurant - totally reasonable. But, what I do not understand nor do I accept is the way in which this idiot approached us about leaving. All I can say is a few select words, graciousness and tact is all it would have taken. I must have had quite an expression on my face because about a nanosecond after he uttered his rude request he quickly offerred us a cocktail at the bar. Too late, buddy.

Now, I'm afraid I have a very sour taste in my mouth and I'm in NO RUSH to return.

I'm sorry Tallulah, but you may want to rethink your customer-facing hire ... he isn't doing you justice!

Pros: Great atmosphere, nice server, overall very good food

Cons: The host - rude and unprofessional
