Message from Taco Stand

You might think 'fresh' and '30 years' don't go together, but you might not have experienced the Taco Stand. For 30 years we've been bringing the best in Fresh Mex to Athens, Atlanta and your neighborhood. Our unrelenting pursuit of freshness sets us apart from other Mexican restaurants and burrito joints. If it's not fresh or hand made, then it's not in our kitchen. We provide the freshest Mexican dining in a fun and refined atmosphere. We're a friendly, neighborhood place. We're a great place to bring the kids for dinner, but also a 'taco tavern', where you can relax after work with a cocktail or stop by for a beer with the team after a game. You won't find chintzy sombreros on the wall, just a fun atmosphere where you're always welcome. Come experience our delicious, creative recipes in a friendly neighborhood atmosphere and find out why the Taco Stand is a legendary tradition.

The Scene
The original "T-Stand" in Athens is a Bulldog's temple, and its Atlanta offspring maintains the collegiate vibe. Tavern-style booths, a hearty bar, 11 television sets and good-natured fellowship fill a brown-toned interior that's boathouse-meets-sports bar. During the day, Buckhead office types and families line up at the counter for a quick, cheap lunch. After work, Georgia grads come to loosen the tie and toss back a beer or margarita over queso dip. The Stand's best feature is its spacious back patio that beckons on a nice afternoon.

The Food
The extra-cheesy Mexican fare works great as game day fuel or a late-night grease fix. The best bet is a taco, crunchy or soft. Choose between traditional and specialty tacos, such as barbeque, fried chicken and tilapia. Although basic, it packs the most flavor. The mission here is to fill and fill cheaply. A side note: Go for beans instead of rice.

Killer Tacos, Great Vibe

by AlexnAtlanta

The Taco Stand has been a favorite of my family's for many years. I used to enjoy the Taco Stand in Athens, but now that we live in Atlanta we take the kids and enjoy some of the freshest mexican food in town. The Taco Stand is still a great happy hour spot, too.

Pros: Best Tacos in town

Awful Service

by meagjames

We are not picky and love Mexican food however we do expect a certain level of service when going to a restaurant. I think the turnover must be really bad here because we have never seen the same staff except for management. I honestly think the management is the problem. We have tried this place 4 times and while the food and drinks are good... we have never gotten our order to come in a timely manner nor has it ever been right! On our last trip, we ordered something which came out wrong. The manager came over and apologized and we got our new order within in minutes. We were very nice until both orders appeared on our bill!! They would not credit us back for the wrong order and said it was our fault for not ordering correctly. Even it if it was our fault- can you imagine not crediting us back for 3 tacos at $3/piece when we had 5 top shelf drinks totally $50? I waited tables for 7 years and am very patient at restaurants and know how customers can be... this is just ridiculous. We honestly thought a hidden camera was going to come out after our last visit... just pathetic. We left and told the manager to please ask someone else in the business for advice on our situation after we left- it was so sad.
Needless to say that we won't be back, there are just too many other options in Atlanta. I don't expect they will be in business much longer unless they learn to treat their customers better.

Pros: Location, Food

Cons: Service and Management were awful!!

Great cheap food and beer!

by nysgal

I love going to the Taco Stand for cheap and easy food. Their fish tacos are one of my favorites! And their queso dip is excellent!

Average tex-mex

by wchapman

The Taco Stand has solid but uninspired tex-mex food. If I'm really in the mood for a taco or burrito, I'll stop by since it's near my office, but I wouldn't make a special trip. Jalisco (on Peachtree at Peachtree Battle) is a far better option for truly good Mexican food at the same price point.

Pros: speedy service

Cons: average food, sports bar atmosphere

Cheap Beer

by kemeers

I went to TS w/ my bf & his friend the other night and tried one of their tofu tacos. It was so hard & tough it felt like I was chewing fried chicken fat. I have heard their other stuff is good so I'll give them another try if anyone I'm with wants to go, but I doubt I'll make a special trip myself. My bf did comment on how cheap the bill was considering the amount of beer they had to drink. I've been to the Mexican restaurant up the road closer to W Paces Ferry and it was really good so I'd go there for dinner, then TS for drinks.

Pros: Cheap Beer, Casual

Cons: Tofu Tacos

Good food, fair prices, live music

by arianne5p

You gotta love the Taco Stand. It's in the middle of Buckhead, but not any fluff. The tacos are really good, and the prices are really low. What a great combination. Good place to grab a beer with friends and watch live music on the patio. My only con would be that I'm a Techie and it is a UGA spot for sure...but I can look past ugly red bulldog posters when I've got a cold beer in my hand and tacos in my mouth!

Pros: Good food fast, live music, low price

Cons: I'm a Tech fan....it's a Georgia place...nuff said

cool hang out

by doctorparetta

I signed up on the Taco Stand's website to get a coupon for a free taco, and I never got it. I went to the Taco Stand anyway with my dad and just told my waitress what happened; I didn't really care if they gave us a free taco or not, but I was told that the place was under new management and the manager would be over right away. I told them not to worry about it: the tacos were only like $2!

The manager came over and he was so nice. He gave my father and me a $20 gift certificate for the next time we come in. How nice was that?!

The food was pretty good for being so cheap. I had a tofu taco with mushrooms and it was very, very delicious! My father and I shared the hot wings as an appetizer and the sauce options are mild, hot, and extra hot (or something to that effect). Thinking that "hot" was just medium, we ordered that. Bad idea! Those wings were SO SPICY. I used up five napkins for each wing to wipe the sauce off!! I like my wings medium... I'm no pansy, but I tell you, be cautious! I'm getting mild next time. I was sweating after the first bite!

GREAT manager, cheap, and fresh food!

Pros: very fresh chicken, delicious tofu taco, great manager

Cons: salsa isn't very tasty. I wish they had pico de gallo.

Great additions

by joemillionaire

Have you tried the new tacos? Unbelievable!!! The new fish taco is the best I've ever had. I was a fan of the taco stand before but now I'm in love. Oh, I forgot. There is also a new burrito called the "Hershel". Sounded corny but Chipolte BBQ pork was an incredible addition. Thanks Taco Stand!

Pros: Great menu, Great atmosphere, Reasonably priced

Cons: none, none, none

The Tiliapia Taco, The Fiesta Salad and the Southwest Taco are great

by deesbees

I have been going to the T-Stand for seven years off and on and yes, service in the past has been up and down and a bit lacking, but they have a new manager who was working the floor and making sure that their guests were happy. We were up there playing trivia and noticed everyone working hard and everyone looked happy. The Tilapia Taco is really good as all there specialty tacos. My mother-in-law really enjoyd the Fiesta Salad and the Southwest Taco, and with 420 and Blue Moon on tap, life is good. Nice, relaxing deck to enjoy watching anything on their flatscreens. We talked with the new manager before we left and said we noticed a difference and told him we would be back. We recommend you check it out again too since it is in a great location plus you have both food and full bar options.

Pros: Great food and service

Cons: None that I can think of

Glory, Glory to Taco Stand

by sara_pi

Favorite of ex-Athenians and Georgia grads, perfect for a night of cheap beer and a good crowd. Food's not as good as the original on Broad (or maybe I'm remembering my school days too fondly), but definitely a good way to spend an evening watching the Braves on the big screen or the Dawgs pound Florida.

Make a Stand for Good Food

by KFMoreau_Citysearch

This Taco Stand attracts a bit of a yuppie crowd --it IS technically still in Buckhead -- but it's a far cry from the usual Buckhead tomfoolery. An easygoing main dining room, with a menu of options high on the far end wall, opens out into a roomy bar with a bit of a sports bar vibe. Tacos are indeed among the best items offered, but my companion on two recent occasions found no fault with the burritos and loved the chips with cheese dip. A good place for a different kind of "meat 'n' three"...a meaty taco (longer than your Bell variety) washed down with three quality well drinks from the bar.
