This was by far the worst vet I have ever been to. I took my rabbit in when I discovered a lump on his cheek. Dr. Burgess said it was a tooth abscess and would be easy to fix. I agreed to surgery and it turned out to be a very agressive cancer. He removed the tumor without calling me. Long story short: I was given the wrong medication, never explained that he needed to come back to have his sutures removed, and the tumor came back weeks later. Had I known what was wrong, I would have never put him through that surgery. He wasn't even given the correct pain medicine until days after his surgery because they mixed up medication.

Business Response:

Julie, It was not possible to determine that the mass was not an abscess until Jamie??s dentistry, under anesthesia, was already in progress. And, it was impossible to know that Jamie??s tumor was malignant before we removed it and had the tissue histopathology report from our reference laboratory. These types of invasive malignant tumors are not common and Dr. Burgess was hopeful that the surgery would be curative. Sadly, it is not possible to diagnose cancer simply by looking at an abnormal mass. I understand that you were under a lot of stress and may not have understood our post-surgical instructions, but we did not mess up Jamie??s medications. They were clearly labeled and we discussed his treatment plan with you several times both at the time of his discharge from the hospital, on the phone and at post-surgical rechecks. At his post-operative recheck Jamie appeared to be in good spirits and to have healed well. Sincerely, Southwest Animal Hospital

I would definitely recommend this vet to anyone who as an "exotic" animal. They do cat's and dog's but specialize in other types of pets. They are caring and always concerned with what's happening with your pet. And no matter what area of town you are in, it will worth the trip.

I take my rabbit to SW Animal Hospital and have been so pleased with the care he receives there. The folks in the office really know their stuff when it comes to small critters (rabbits, ferrets...) & their expertise is so much more than a dog/cat vet would be able to provide.

If you have a "non standard" pet, this is the vet to go to! The staff is knowledgeable and caring, compassionate and helpful. Highly, highly recommended. They are also very good with cats, although they don't treat dogs.

I can't say enough about the care my small pets have received from Southwest. Both doctors really care about my pets like I do. They are very understanding of the special place even our small pets have in our hearts. I wish my human doctor took care of me the way Dr. Mark took care of my guinea pigs.

Dr Burgess is amazing with Exotic animals. I have taken my bunnies and rats to him and been very happy with him and his staff. He really knows his stuff. I would trust his opinion over any other vet. When we moved to another state, we were sad that he could no longer see our pets. Luckily he does phone consults for a very reasonable fee. We call him for a phone consult anytime we are concerned about our bunnies treatment and need a second opinion. Through his phone consults alone he has saved both of our bunnies lives at least twice. Other vets have given us the wrong diagnosis or meds that are dangerous for bunnies. But one phone call to Dr Burgess and everything is straightened out.

I can't praise these vets enough. Dr. Burgess and Dr. Surrency are both extremely knowledgeable and communicative, and you can tell that they REALLY love the animals. They diagnosed our guinea pigs' problems quickly and accurately and provided correct treatment, when our regular (kitty) vet was just guessing (always wrongly). They will give you tons of expert information, everything you need to know about taking care of your pet. Their prices were always a pleasant surprise to me. The rest of the staff is very nice, and they are great about getting you an appointment when you really need one. This is the ONLY place to take your exotic animal. Other vets refer their difficult cases here, because these doctors are the real experts. --A very happy and grateful client.

I was referred to this vet for first my little mouse and then my bunny...cat and dog vets just aren't the same. 95% of this clinic's patients aren't cats and dogs, and it shows! The staff loves us and our little odd pets, and knows all about each of them. If only my doctor was so happy to see me!
I have been very happy with the diagnostics and treatments I have gotten from every member of the staff. I keep making the 45 minute drive every time, because only the best for my bun!
