My 10 year old cat fell ill on March 21, 2014. I contacted my vet to schedule in an appointment and due to my work schedule they were unable to accommodate an appointment and based on what I was told my cat was in need of immediate care. Mind you, I pay a monthly fee to bring my pet to the vet I usually bring her to. Services there are covered by "insurance" and "free of charge." I called multiple places to see if anyone could fit in my cat, and Cats and Critters business hours actually lined up with my work schedule. I called and they were extremely concerned about my cat's condition and told me to bring her in immediately. Even offered to let me drop her off, seeing as I was at work. I left work brought Lola to their facility and was told I would receive a phone call in a short while. Sure enough, I received a call stating my cat was hostile, and they wanted to sedate her with a tranquilizer to calm her down, do a rectal exam, and a urine screening. I asked at that moment "how much am I looking at? I do not want to get hit with a big vet bill in the end." The vet responded "$60.00" I gave the go ahead, and the vet assured me that anything that came up from the testing, or further action would be discussed via phone call. Two hours past and I received nothing, so I had a friend call for me because I was at work. My friend was told that they were waiting on the testing and that they would call back shortly. I was called and informed that my cat had something going on with her bladder and was told a couple different directions to go from there. I opted to go ahead with antibiotics and asked at that point how much they were. I was quoted $15.00. I then said OK and verified that the $60.00 of work earlier and the $15.00 from the antibiotics were my charges. She then apologized for "misleading" me into thinking that the charges were only $60.00 and in fact my total was $250.00. I was astounded, and said I was under the impression that I would have received a call if the charges changes at all. She then dropped the price to $200.00 when nothing was in fact taken off of the bill, she just changed the total. I said I would discuss this when I came to pick up my pet. When I arrived there I was pulled into a side room and they went over my charges with me. I told them I understood that there was a miscommunication, and when I was called and requested a total I was told $60, and not told at all about fee's they applied to my bill. I told them that I have a vet, and I pay good money there for my services. They were unable to fit me in, and although my services would have been covered there I opted to bring her to Cat's and Critters based on the sole fact she needed immediate attention. I specifically asked about charges, because if I was quoted what they were actually going to charge me I would have waited until the next day to bring my cat to my own vet where it would have been covered. The manager then said "fine." Discounted the bill to what I was told my bill was going to be. I was then informed that they would not fill the script for my pet only write one out because of their error!!! They refused! I was polite and said that I understood and that I would bring the script to my own vet. I was brought up front squared away the bill..which was at that point written out to under $200 when they had told me $250 over the phone. They marked a refusal to pay reverse charge on it as well. I waited for my pet to be brought out and when she was I was then verbally attacked in the lobby. The woman said to me "we dropped everything at the drop of a hat to get your pet in here today." I said "thank you, I really appreciate it. I do not want you to think that I dont. I also said I understood about the miscommunication and would recommend them to anyone who asked." She then accused me of knowing how much the visit was going to be, and claimed that I knew how much services like this cost. Which, I in fact do not. Which is why I asked over the phone. She then stated that I brought my cat there because it was "less expensive then my current vet." I told her I make good money, and was not trying to pull a fast one one them. I also defended my vet, and stated that they are actually CHEAPER! I was treated horribly, quoted the wrong prices, and accused of being a con-artist! Never in my life have I ever been treated so poorly at a facility. They failed to take any responsibility for their misleading price quotes, and accusations they threw at me. I am truly appalled by this company, and its employees.

I have been very happy with the service we recieved at Cats & Critters. Yes, their building is small. And, yes, the prices aren't cheap (but they are the same as many vets in the area who are part of the collective.)
I took my cat here for the entirety of her life here in Rochester, which was about 5 years. She developed various illnesses, starting with chronic pancreatitis and then diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid and kidney issues. Throughout the various tests and diagnonses, the vets and staff were great. For example, the diabetes diagnosis came just before I was leaving for vacation. The sitter I had arranged wouldn't do insulin injections. One of the vet techs at C&C stepped up and came to give my cat her meds while I was gone.
The parking lot is also tiny and an elderly woman once hit my car attempting to back out. Another one of the staff now takes her meds for her pet and parks her car for her when she comes in for office visits.
When I wanted to get a second opinion/ ideas from a holistic vet, they were very supportive and assisted in getting the paperwork, etc., together. I greatly appreciated that.
The cost of veterinary care isn't low, but as I went through all of the issues with my cat, Dr. Couture was very sensitive to the financial implications. She was very up-front about what ongoing costs I could expect from different courses of action, and provided options when they were available. They were very good about allowing me to get my prescriptions filled elsewhere which was less costly for me, even though it required them to fax and/or call different pharmacies.
It is thanks in large part to the excellent care my cat recieved that she lived as long and as comfortably as she did. I now have two new cats and we will continue to be clients and customers of Cats & Critters.

I have been using this clinic for many years. All my bunnies are rescues and some came from horrendous situations with very complex medical issues. I have brought some very difficult cases to them. Ember and Joanne have never shown any of my pets anything but gentle, caring compassionate care. Yes I have had losses but have to say these 2 vets took veterinary medicine to the max to try save them. They are always willing to consult and researchI am a very experienced rescuer with quite a bit of veterinary knowledge myself. I highly recommend Joanne Hach and Ember Couture. They are 2 of the very best exotics vets in the area.

I'm shocked by the negative comments here -- remember, there are two sides to every story. I've been taking my cats to Ember and Joanne for 11 years now, ever since Ember took over the hospital from The Cat Doctor. They have seen me through diabetes, cardiomyopathy, liver cancer, cancer of the mediastinum, multiple neuters and spays, teeth cleaning, you name it. I have never had anything but positive experiences with any of the staff. There used to be a wacky receptionist there, and maybe that was the customer service problem some of these posters experienced, but other than rather high prices, I can't say enough good things about them.

We love Dr. Couture. She is very knowledgeable about rabbits and saved our bunny's life last year. She and all the staff were very kind and helpful while we our bunny was recovering. There are a lot of people out there who, for some reason, think medical care for pets should be free. Just as for humans, tests and treatments cost money, take time, can't always determine a problem. If you are a responsible pet owner, I highly recommend this practice.

This is literally the most knowledgable and up to date veterinarian hospital that sees exotics and cats. The previous reviewers that have posted negative reviews have a personal axe to grind.
Sharon H.: Your cat had FIP an always deadly highly contagious virus. The Vet was trying to save your other cats life that you were risking contamination and thus would have two dead cats. I know it hurts to loss a pet but come on it is not the Vets fault your cat was sick.
Jennifer C.: Odviously you a misrepresenting the actual events as they really occurred. No vet would tell you that a kitten with back legs collapsing was a normal reaction. Kittens due get tired after vaccine but what you describe is a emergency and the Vets at CC would have responded accordingly. Be honest!
Linda T.: CC uses an outside lab and they simply were reporting the results to you. The fact that you blame the Vet for reporting lab results to you and trying to find the cause of your cats low cell blood count speaks more about you and less about the veterinarian. Also the fact that you never had either cat tested for Feline Leukemia before is simply sad for your pets health.
Tanvi J.: To blame the Vets for not being able to cure your cats "skin condition" is absurd. People suffer from complexing skin coditions that can be reduced in their severity but never cured animals are no different. And pets rely on owners compliance for appropriate treatment. Did you do everything CC recommended? In regards to blood test they of course would not cure your cat (are you serious?). How long did you give them before calling and complaining about not receiving results? In human medicine it takes weeks.
Michelle G.: Blaming CC asking about a past pet is sad for you! Did you consider that maybe you did not inform them of the pets death? And how dare they confuse Miss Piggy with a guinea pig HMMM?!!

All of these Complaints revolve around one issue people's unreasonable expectations and misconceptions about medicine.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS VET!!!!!!!!! HORRIBLE!

My beloved cat had FIP.We took our cat for an ultrasound, and it was very important to us to find out the results ASAP considering the severity of the disease and the fact that the animal was suffering (we eventually had to put him to sleep). The doctor promised that the results would be back on Tue (the procedure was done Sun), however when Tuesday came about the results were not it and we were informed that they were lost by the radiologist. Which later turned out to be a LIE. Just so it happens that the doctor forgot to send in the test on Monday, thus the results were a day late. We paid 400 dollars for this procedure, VERY PRICEY, and she refused to give us even a portion of the money back. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. They will take your money and not care about your animal. BTW, when i first told her about my kitty, she said "you should put him down as soon as possible, to prevent the other cat from getting infected." If she cared about anything else except his money she would have never said that!

I have read the reviews below and find it very distressing that people would put such negative reviews regarding this practice. I find that Dr. Couture and Dr. Hach care very much about the pets that come to their establishment. I have been a client there for about 2 yrs now and have found them very knowledgeable and will go to the very ends to find out what is wrong with any pet. I believe anyone who is going to be a client of any medical establishment whether it be medical (for themselves) or for their pets need to get their facts straight and to ask questions. Owners of pets need to realize that when the Dr. orders bld work its for a reason. And sometimes bld work results come back with readings with no rhyme or reason behind them. Also owners need to be aware that pets unlike people hide their symptoms until sometimes it is really too late to recover from them, they are not humans they can not tell you what is wrong with them. This is coming from someone who lost a pet to renal failure and I don't blame the Drs at all, if anything I blame myself for that one, but by the time her symptoms were really showing it was just too late she was very sick. These Drs will do everything possible to care for your pets but you also need to be very active in their care, so when a Dr calls you don't wait a week to return their phone call. Also if they feel your pet needs to be seen soon don't wait a week it could mean between life and death. I do not believe from the review below that they would tell someone of a 10 week old kitten who was displaying such symptoms that it is considered normal, they would most definitely tell you to bring that kitten in immediately. Coming from someone who use to work in the medical field ask questions, don't be afraid too that is what they are there for, also I read complaints about pricing if you are not sure of what something is going to cost ask for an estimate they will be more then happy to give you one like they have for me on numerous occasions, then you can sit down and go over what they feel is very important and if your in a financial situation and your pet needs extensive testing talk to them they will work with you. They do care about you and your pets and they work very hard to make sure that your pet has the best health care that they can receive.

I had a very bad experience and found them very incompetent. I took my 10 week old kitten here for her first vaccinations, one hour later at home I saw she was having a bad reaction, her legs on one side were collapsing underneath her and one eye had gone droopy, she was clearly in a lot of distress! I called the vets and they said that this occurred in 50% of cats and not to worry let her sleep it off!!! I stayed up all night with the kitten who was very unwell, whining a lot and unable to move. In the morning I rang another recommended vet who told me that this was an bad reaction to the vaccination which was not very common but could happen and that I needed to bring her in that morning. I took her to this vets, having lost faith in the other. They gave her an injection to counteract the bad reaction and things are looking good again. The kitten needed that injection STRAIGHT AWAY, this is not common! and certainly not in 50% of cats! have you heard it before! I wish I had known and the kitten would not have had to spend the whole night in such pain and discomfort!!

I've been taking my cats to here for 2 years. I have NEVER had such a bad experience with a vet in all of my years as a pet owner. This review is long, but please read it if your pets are current patients , here or considering going there.

A few months ago, I brought my cat in for a routine teeth cleaning. I was told that he had some "abnormal blood test results," which was surprising because my cat showed no signs of being sick. I spoke to Dr. C who seemed to have no idea why my cat's red blood cell count was very low, and his white blood cell count was very high. She told me to bring my cat in for a follow-up blood test in two weeks.

I took my cat in two more times for blood tests. Each time, Dr. C was evasive and clueless, but kept suggesting more and more tests. She wanted to do (an expensive and painful) bone marrow test on my cat. She said I needed to bring my other cat in for a feline leukemia test, too, yet he never tested my supposedly "sick" cat for that.

I was fed up, so I had them fax all of my cat's blood work results to another vet (which they didn't want to do, but I insisted.) It turns out that my cat is JUST FINE AND NOT SICK AT ALL! The test results from the outside lab (the infinitely more accurate and dependable results) showed that all of my cat's levels were normal.

So really- all you wanted was my money after all this time??? STAY AWAY.

Dr C , Dr H and the entire staff at Cats and Critters offer the very best expert compassionate care. They have saved literally saved my rabbits and my cat's life. The are literally on the top of their game. Bringing my cat back from the brink of death and successfully performing a delicate surgery on my rabbit I am indebted to Cats and Critters.

Both Dr C and H are extremely incompetent. After 4 years of taking my cats here and no diagnosis on my younger cats skin problems , I changed the vet. Also my older 11 yr old cat was very ill and they made a quick appt (that was the only good thing) but gave me a $550 bill for the tests they had to do. I paid it thinking at least my cat will be well. They have yet to call me after I have repeatedly called their office on the lab results and my cat is sick as ever. Save your money/time for another clinic that actually cares about their clients well being!

Wow, I called them to set up an app't! They sent me paperwork to fill out in advance, which was GOOD! I set up an app't & called a week later to change the time & day of the app't. That was today that I called. They said "We don't do Reptiles or Birds any more." They asked if I was bringing "Miss Piggy" in for the app't. she thought my "piggy" was a Guinea Pig! She didn't even know piggy was a Leopard Gecko, how SAD is that. "Piggy" has been dead for 7 years now & they didn't even remember she was a gecko, let alone that she was now DEAD! I'm afraid to say it but I'm glad they don't do "REPTILES" anymore..... They DO NOT know what they are doing with them.

When I first got my guinea pigs the vets that I took them to were pretty clueless about the care of these small animals. I did some research and found Cats and Critters. The vets here continue there education about small animals by going to seminars frequently. Dr. Couture is also the first to whip out a book to try and find different methods of treatment, or send things to Cornell if she does not have the perfect answer to a question. I would never consider taking a small animal anywhere else. The comment that said the staff didn't care about a cat's failing health is so far off base. Each time I received bad news about a pet the whole office cried with me. They are the most caring compassionate animal care providers I've ever met. When I first got my cats they said that one of them had very visible signs of dental disease. With there recommendations on food their teeth are beautiful, and my cats coats are just as nice. They know what they are doing.

PROS: Great vets, friendly service, caring compassionate staff, clean office,
CONS: parking can be crowded, a little pricey (but payment plans are available)

I am very upset about this clinic. I almost lost my love cat by trusting their treatment. Dr. H in the clinic prescribed this drug called metacam and the dose almost killed my cat and they did not even know what they have done wrong and just told us that my cat is not goining to live long (by Dr. C). You should know this if you have a cat since metacam is only use for one-time injection in cat and never oral for multiple times. They never warn us anything about metacam but the instruction from manufacture clearly said " ONLY USE FOR DOG". My cat got into the clinic to treat minor injury and found no kidney disease first time we went. My cat had no pre-existing kidney conditions neither. After the drug, Dr. C told me my cat had kidney failure and want to send us home wihtout doing anything for my cat and just told us that a lot of reason could cause the onset of Feline Renal failure. The worst is she dose not seem to feel bad for the whole thing at all. We changed the clinic but the drug may have caused the permanent damage to my cat?s kidney. Please be aware! Now, I am crying and feeling guilty everyday.

This is the only place I will bring my pets from now on. They are a well educated team of vets and vet assistants who really care about your pets.
I had to put my rabbit down 2 years ago and they gave him his on little room and gave us our privacy to say our good byes. About two days later they mailed me a sympathy card that they all had signed indevidually. Now my kitty goes there for all her kitty needs.
