Been going to Beltway for years with numerous cats and a dog. We also had 2 ferrets that Dr. Smith recommended a vet for. Overall I have found this to be a very good, reasonable and accurate practice. The only negative experience was when we had to put a cat to sleep last year. It was a very bad experience, and I felt they could have been more compassionate with both the animal and us. I find Dr. Shortal to be gruff, but accurate and Dr. Smith to be more people personal. One of the techs, Sally is amazing with her care and ability to work with distressed owners. Sean is also very good.

I unfortunately had to take my cat here to be euthanized. Having worked in veterinary medicine in the past, I know how certain things should be done, and when they are being done the wrong way. Everything about this visit was WRONG. During what was already a difficult time for me, the staff was uncaring and rude. Upon entering the exam room with my cat, the Dr did not even bother to introduce himself to me. I explained to the staff that my kitty could be difficult to handle at the vet and requested that they give him an injection of a sedative prior to attempting to handle him. They did not listen to me, let alone even acknowledge the fact that I had even said anything. They ended up choking my cat with a no slip leash that is meant for use in dogs while trying to restrain him, which is not the right way to restrain a cat, and if you ask me, it is bordering on cruelty. I was completely horrified and shocked at this point. My cat, while being handled at the vet is always very vocal and loud, and he could not even get any sounds out of his mouth due to the technician having the leash so tight around his neck. After the Dr put my cat to sleep, I got no condolences from him. He simply stated without feeling that he was gone, and then left the room.

I really have no idea why this man is a veterinarian. If him and his staff will handle and treat a pet this way in front of an owner, I hate to think how they treat pets that are dropped off at the clinic and entrusted to their CARE, if you can call it that.

I had a horrible experience. They wanted to keep my little puppy there overnight for monitoring, when in reality, they don't have anyone there overnight to watch the animals. She would have been in a crate all night surrounded by barking dogs. this would have scarred my puppy for life. I left in tears, only to come back an hour later to pick her up, once i came to my senses. They didn't care about the best interest of my puppy or me.

OMG- my expereince today at the beltway animal hospital-loch raven & joppa was dispicable to put it lightly. I took my 2 dogs 2 & 3 yrs old for their annual shots- always had Dr. Smith whom I find to be an animal handler, however 2day Dr.Shorttall(tail) w/ his assistant attended the dogs- the assistant's approach was wrong to start- he yanked jack up abruptly placed him on the table - held him thighly round the upper part of his body towards the neck area- didn't think too much of that- jack was wiggling w/fright from the start of initial rough handling ,which he has never experienced- but the shocker was Dr. Shorttall took the heal of his hand w/ a grimice on his face and punched jack in his side- jack gave out a scream i did not know could come from a dog- I was horrified- quickly came to myself i said to the doctor "you hit my dog-i don't hit my dog especially w/ my hand" the doctor replied " well it was a reaction" his assistant gave a term that minimized what just happened- i restated to both men " you hit my dog"- after both dogs recieved their shots- it was time to trim their nails- the assistant yank jack up again only this time slamming jack on to the talbe, held him a chock-hold squeezing him so tighly his whole gum area & tongue turned purplish/blue, his eyes were buldging, jack was gaging- i confronted the assist again while paying- his remark was "you talking to the wrong person" left shaken- i dialed 311 asked for county police to report animal abuse- when officer arrived he heard my side, went into the vet- and too my surprise i learned neither dr shortall nor assistant denied what just took place- i will follow up further i am certain if i was not in the room w/ my dogs jack may have expired from suffucating- never did either doctor or assistant bother to put a muzzel on jack as i have learned through surveying should have happened, nor did i once get an apology- needless to say i won't be back there again

Beltway Animal Hospital kept my originally vicious and always fiesty reformed tom-cat alive for 18 years. They brought him back from a run-in with a racoon where he lost his spleen, numerous bouts with parasites (because he ate everything he killed), abcessed teeth and 2 major stokes from which he full recovered and never failed to use his box (or escape to go outside and hunt again). I loved that cat and he loved no-one but me, In spite of his often vicious nature (both Dr. Shortall and Dr. Smith were scratched and bitten by my beloved beast.) They gave him te best of care ... Even after I had him "fixed" he never stopped fighting anything that dared to enter into his territory and, as a result, sustained varying degrees of inury throughout his life. The medical care is first rate and the prices are reasonable (even if I paid a fortune because I was there so frequently.) I would reccomend Beltway Animal Hospital to anyone who loves thier pet and especially those who may have problem pets but do not want to mortgage thier houses to keep them healthy ...

Dr. Smith and Dr. Shortall saved my dog, Iggy's, life. He had multiple abscesses, to the point that his skull was showing, and they determined that he had dental problems so they removed his teeth. Iggy has never been happier since his teeth were removed. They have treated all four of pets, two cats, and two dogs (including my hairless crested), and provide exceptional care for a very low price. The staff all have exceptional senses of humor. Their office is no frills, no pampering, but I prefer exceptional pet care to a fancy office.

When I first brought my dogs into Beltway Animal Hospital I was content with the service. I find Dr. Smith to be a sweet, pleasant person and is great with the animals. It was only after a few visits that this place's true colors came out. Their staff is INCREDIBLY rude to the owners, specifically Dr. Shortall, and I will no longer be bringing my dogs here.

I had taken my cats to 2 other vets in the area and was very unhappy with the service and pricing. A friend recommended me to Beltway and the doctors there were able to treat my cat's eye condition that both of the other vets left untreated. They are always quick, efficient and are very reasonably price. Everyone there is so nice and they handle the pets AMAZINGLY. I won't go anywhere else!

I recently took my Chocolate Lab to them for a torn ACL. They operated and informed me that it was a success. After 1 week,(at the vets request), we started some minor rehab,(walking her 1 block and back). Within 2 walks my wife noticed a clicking sound coming from her knee. We brought her back and they informed us that one of the wires holding her knee came loose and that they would have too go back in and tighten and or replace it. About 2 weeks later, again clicking from the knee. After being diagnosed by a different vet he informed us that double wireing was needed. Well 2 weeks later this problem has resumed. I spent $1089.00 on my dog, and I am pretty certain I will never see that money again and my dog is limping around with a popping sound coming from her knee. If you loove your animals as I do, I would not advise you to take them to this very incompetant group.

We have been going to Beltway Animal Hospital for 32 years. Dr. Shortall and Dr. Smith have always had our pets best interests in mind. Dr. Smith operated on our lab mix and did a fantastic job. She should not be alive but is so because of him. Dr. Shortall is always concerned about any issues and treats us and the animals extremely well. We are so satisfied with Beltway Animal Hospital that both of our children who are now adults continue to use them as their vet. Our daughter even travels from Columbia to go there. Some have talked about his gruff manner, but Dr. Shortall is very dedicated to helping animals. His attention to our German Shepherd (who has had a multitude of medical problems) is outstanding. I also agree that maybe the way that people treat their pets may have something to do with his attitude. He truly cares about animals. I personally find Dr. Shortall's dry sense of humor to be hysterical. Our cats and dogs have always had very good care at Beltway. If you want a no-nonsense, caring and efficient vet, then Beltway is the place for you. We highly recommend them.

I've dealt with a lot of overpriced vets that always figure out a way to squeeze money and make you wait forever. This place may be low tech but the prices are reasonable, there is virtually no wait, and you never feel like you are being sold. Mt cat was recently injured and they saw him immediately and gave him very good care. I highly recommend them.

I was very impressed by Dr. Shortall's sense of humor and efficiency. He asked all the right questions and quickly attended to my pet's needs. I think Dr. Shortall is a great vet. Obviously, I had a much different experience than the other Shannon B that posted in May!

I had never had a problem w. any of my pets at this vet until just recently when i took my cat in to get a simple procedure done and when it came back with sutures i was appalled to see that there defiantly was not enough to close the incision, but i let it go thinking maybe how they suture up an animal could be different then how they would do a human. Again i don't know if the vets were supposed to but no topical antibiotic was given to me for my kitty's wound. To top it all off when he came home he magically had flees... but i called in a few days later and explained how i was concerned and they took him in right away

I too have found Dr. Shortall (and sometimes Dr. Smith) to be rude and/or dismissive, but those sentiments really only matter to people - not pets. The most negative factor I have seen is that their poor attitudes can and have impacted my pet's best interest and health. Say what you will about personality, the true test should be pet care. They could do better.

Dr. Shortall may not have the best "bed-side manner" with the owners, but he is WONDERFUL with the animals. We've been going there for years, and they are very kind to the animals, and they are extremely fair. A lot of vets will give you all sorts of meds - most of which are not needed. I trust them completely. After all, the most important thing is your pet's health and well-being!

Dr. Shortall is one of the rudest, most inconsiderate vets I have ever met. He is nasty to the pet owner no matter the circumstance. My cat has been there in sickness and in health and never have I met someone so disinterested in someones best answers.

He tried to keep my cat there "hostage" as he put it. My cat was in better health going in then when he left covered in his own urine. I was hung up on by Dr. Shortall as well after he told me my cat would die if he came home.

The staff is rude and short with you, and beyond nasty on the phone even when just trying to make an appointment.

Dr. Shortall might not have the best bedside manner with people, but he puts animals' well-being first. Sometimes I think he is a little gruff with people if they haven't been taking proper care of their pets. If you want a pampered experience, don't go here. But if you want great care at a very good price, then Beltway is the best.

We had been having a recurring problem with our dog and was under the care of another vet. It was escalating not getting better as were the vet bills. On recommendation, we took her to Beltway and saw Dr. Smith. The experience could not have been better. He was very caring as well as gave a plan of action without being pushy. Our dog is much improved and looks like her old self again, thanks to them. Everyone there has been nothing but kind and good at their jobs.

We used these vets for years but in the last year had several poor experiences with Dr. Shortall who was very abrupt and seemed thoroughly uninterested in getting to the root of our cat's problem. He was very rude and got defensive when I asked questions. When I said I had been looking on the internet for information, he became sarcastic and told me "if you want to believe stuff written by some guy in his basement, be my guest." Dr. Smith (in the past) seemed to genuinely like the animals, but like someone else said in their review, he was dismissive of my complaints with his partner. We decided to take out pets elsewhere.

Pro: None
Con: Rude and dismissive

I have gone to Beltway Animal Hospital for years. I have tried a few vets nearer to my home, because I live across town, but they don't compair.Beltway does not run extra tests just to make a buck, as many vet practices do. They offer consistent care, knowledgeable vets and a resonable price. If you want your pet to have a massage and a blow dry while they are at the vets, then you should continue to go to the animal hospital that charges exorbitant fees.

My family has been using Beltway Animal Hospital since the nineties (routine dog and cat visits). Until recently I have had positive experiences (pleasant vet techs, efficient and knowledgeable care from both vets, etc.). However, I took a new cat in for neutering and had a disappointing experience. When I went in to pick up my cat, Dr. Shortall came out to tell me that my cat threw up a foreign object after surgery and he was very lucky (he also had some other choice phrases not worth repeating). When I asked what I should do, he told me to take the cat home and watch him. I took the cat home but he was terribly sick so I called back. Dr. Shortall told me to watch him overnight and bring him back in the morning for X-Rays. When I asked him what to do if I did not think the cat would make it through the night, he gruffly told me that if I followed his instructions (what instructions?) he would be fine. I pressed for an emergency vet recommendation and he reluctantly told me to go to the Catonsville Pet ER (which is over 40 minutes from my home). My cat continued to be extremely ill so I neglected Dr. Shortall??s advice and went to the nearest Pet ER that was available. After some IV hydration and an X-Ray, it was determined there was a large foreign body still in the cat and he might have died if I had waited. In their defense, it is not their fault that my cat ate a non-food item that I was unaware of right before I brought him in. The next time I was at Beltway, Dr. Smith was cavalier about the nature of my experience. I am sure Dr. Smith and Dr. Shortall are not always like this, but I was disappointed with both of them. For routine visits they are fine and reasonably priced, but think twice if you need compassion or out of the ordinary care.

I took my dog here because he cut himself. It was close to closing time and one of the vets said that he needed stitches and he was keeping him overnight. I tried to explain to him that he has major anxiety issues and doesn't do well in cages, but in an incompassionate manner he said, "He'll be fine!" He didn't give me any details as to where he would be staying, if any staff stayed overnight, if they would feed him, or take him to the bathroom. He just rushed me out of there. I was fine with my dog staying overnight, but I would have liked to have some reassurance and some details on how he would be cared for. I would never take my dog to this vet again. I am sure that this vet is a fine vet, but from my experience he does not seem to have very much compassion for dog owner's.

I have had a cat with chronic vomiting and facial itchiness for going on 4 years now. I've been to many vets in the Baltimore area and have heard everything from "she may have liver failure" to "we should probably do exploratory surgery," and at one point settled on the advice of the Big Vet Clinic in this area who had convinced me that the only thing to keep my kitty marginally healthy was to purchase outrageously expensive cat food that I could only buy from them.

Then a friend recommended Beltway. I took my cat to see Dr. Smith, and in literally minutes, he had given me a definitive diagnosis and suggested a course of treatment that has not only been successful in keeping my cat from being sickly-thin, but has also made her able to begin eating normal cat food without vomiting. It's bee almost two months since I first saw Dr. Smith, and my cat has never been healthier. She's actually getting kind of pudgy--unheard of for my little skeleton-cat!

I am fully convinced that Beltway Animal Hospital provides the best veterinary care in the Baltimore area. I will never take my animals anywhere else.

I actually stumbled upon this place just calling around. Let me say I was very pleased with the service. I had my cat de-clawed and I wanted to make sure my cat was taken good care of. Not only was the price affordable, but when I went to pick up my cat, he acted as if he didn't even have surgery. He was up walking around the same day we brought him home. To this day he is fine, running around the house, and silly as ever. I would recommend this clinic to anyone!

I am so happy to have found this vet. It was by word of mouth. They have been helpful, caring, and got me to put my dogs on a diet, something people have trouble doing. My shelties are healthy because of this. They have answered questions over the phone and their prices are reasonable unlike other vets in the area.

I work at a veterinary clinic, but take my pets to see Dr. Shortall and Dr. Smith, That pair will give you more vet for the buck than any other vet around, Sure you will always have an unhappy client no matter what business you are in, Especially when you don't take care of your pet and expect a miracle. No-one will ever touch my trio of Schipperkes except Beltway.

I had my first experience with Beltway over 30 years ago when I had my first two cats. Considering they were California cats with attitudes, they didn't mind going to the vets...once they forgave me for getting them "Fixed".
Now I have 2 cats that are 9 years old and a Shiba Inu mix almost 3 years old, I still take them there. My male cat had an eye infection that had gotten very bad in a very short amount of time. I took him to Beltway and the vet said there was a chance he could lose his eye. I mean it was bad! I told the vet that I couldn't afford much and he gave me drops and I followed the orders. He saved my cats eye and was synpathetic to my financial situation. I love those guys there. They're friendly and helpful. I highly recommend them!!!!!!!

This is the only place my dad has used for years. He used to use another vet and for a weekend away it would cost him a fortune for his dog. Now he uses Beltway, and they are much better priced and friendlier staff. I've gone in many times to pick up my dad's dog on Sunday. Their hours are shorter on Sunday but you do get the opportunity to pick up your pet. Every time I go in I'm greeted with a smile! The dog is always well cared for and they even will help me get her to the car! They let me pick up my dad's animals so long as I pay if there is money owed. Their medications are much cheaper than other vets. My dad compared the prices from them and his last vet and Beltway was cheaper every time for the same exact medication.

PROS: Great location, Great prices, Awesome vets!
CONS: Who wants to have a sick animal?

Attn Everyone:
If you sincerely care for your pet, do not go to this place. The doctor examined my cat and just by looking at him said he probably had cancer. Well I am not a medical professional but my parents are, and they told me that's impossible. Then he told me that the cat would need to stay over night. Futhermore, he had x-rays done to make more money.. Then he said my cat definitely had cancer and he should be put to sleep. Well we decided to give my cat some antibiotics and my cat was much better. We took the cat to another vet and he said that the cat didn't have cancer. So I realized that this doctor who I had originally went to just wanted to make extra money at the expense of my cat's live. He even told me, " Do you really want your cat to suffer?" This doctor is an absolute moron and if you want your pet to die then by all means go to him.

PROS: None
CONS: They care to make money and nothing else...

This Animal Hospital is a great place to take your pet when they need to visit the vet for a routine check up. Not only does the animal hospital deal with traditional animal like cats and dogs, they also take care of more exotic animals like reptiles They take great care of animals and if you take your pet(s) there, they will be in good hands. I take my dogs here every year to receive their shots . I am always happy with the staff and the doctors attention to detail. I would recommend going here before going to surrounding areas places. This staff is great and they care about your animals unlike numerous other area hospitals.
