I was thrilled because I've always wanted to check XYZ out and with no surprise, we had a grand time... As we arrived at the restaurant, I was given a long-stem rose for welcome... We were treated like "royals"... Besides the cool ambiance, the food and service are excellent.., our waiter that night, mentioned about the free-chocolates at the bar and oh boy, it was like heaven - what a great way to end our night at XYZ... Highly recommended!!!!

Had gone to this restaurant with a friend from out of town. Not so sure this was the place to empress, but its location was the best for the time we had. We were greeted fast by the host who got us a great booth, which I thought was the best table in the restaurant. The funny thing is that the restaurant was full and give any cash to inspire that. The waiter nice , his name was Brad or Brian and got us a great recomendation for wine from the wine buyer, who is also a waiter. The wine service was of a five star restaurant and did not make me feel uncomfortable or intimidated. The waiter explained the menu and offered other alternatives for my friend who had special needs. The food was great, freash and complimented with sauces and spices that I would not normaly think of. My favorit was the duck with the roasted veggies and my friend loved the tasting menue. I had the choclate granache cake and it was too small but rich enought to fill me up hundreds of calories(it was just enoght) The waiter was busy but met our needs and found time to chat with us and gave us a heads up. 50% OFF THE WINE LIST IN ALL OF AUGUST. Not kidding. Great wine list, oooh yeah we will be back. Had great company great service, food and wine. Thank you San Francisco.

Pros: food, service, WINE

Cons: the rooom looks used, like a 20 year old high end restaurant that need a renovation

This place is really nice, don't get me wrong, but the wait staff is so rude. They lost my friend's credit card and were completely unsympathetic about it. He never got it back. They also got mad at another person I came with, because they ordered food from the downstairs lounge and took it upstairs to eat. It?s the same place! Other than that, the drink specials were pretty decent and the atmosphere is gorgeous. I just hate when bartenders and waiters are cocky because they work in a nice place.

this is not my favorite place in the city - but I always end up having a great time here. It has a sort of snooty vibe to it but like I said - everyone ends up having a great night overall so i guess it's worth a visit to judge for yourself.

Not sure if it was just near the convention center and a big techie convention was going on, but the bar had a pretty fun scene every night. The drinks are generous and the bartendars are a friendly...once you're able to get past their standoffish exterior. The decor is trendy with plush couches, contemporary chairs and warm fireplace. Not a bad place after a long day at the convention hall.

I love the XYZ bar, the bartenders here are for sure lovely. Barry, Josh, Eric, Ann Marie are my favorite bartenders here. The small bites are good though. Calamari and french fries are things I want all the time here.

my husband and i went to the xyz restaurant for my birthday, and were very disappointed with pretty much everything! the waiter/somelier was sooo unfriendly! he didnt smile at us even once. seemed like he could hardly bear with us dining there.... the food sounded so good, but it tasted so oily and heavy ( we were happy not to order the 3-course menu), even my husband couldn't finish his dish. we tried to finish our dinner and move to the W bar as soon as we could. and the bar was perfect, both drinks and service!

Unlike the restaurant next to it, the bar is great! great service, nice wine, great ambience, what else do you need in a bar? the bar was so good that it erased the bad aftertaste from the horrible service and bad food at the restaurant! great service! very highly recommended! we go back there again and again!

This is one of our favorite stops. Its a nice lounge, located within the The W Hotel. We stop by every weekend for a little chit chatting and on we go. Its got a great vibe and nice interior for the upscale crowd. Theres alot of space to move around and meet new people. The drink cocktails aren't the best, but the ambiance and crowd makes up. Our favorite places on the weekend agenda are Starlight Room, Red Room, Matrix, Slanted Door, Foreign Cinema and the Syn Lounge.

Went to XYZ for the first time for Dine About Town. There were 2 options for every course as well as wine pairings, which were OK, not excellent. My appetizer was a beet salad which made me realize how great beets are! It was delicious and simple. Our entrees, braised short ribs w/ broccoli rapini and salmon w/ risotto were tasty but very heavy. Flavors were good but I didn't feel like it was something worth going to a pricey restaurant for. Dessert was excellent though, the semifreddo of banana bread and vanilla ice cream topped with candied walnuts was a great way to end the meal. Unfortunately, we felt overstuffed and there was little time in between courses to just take a break. There was a feeling of being rushed out of there (even though there were still open tables). Overall, very posh surroundings make it fun but food didn't live up to expectations.

Went for Sunday brunch with the wife for the dine about town specials. First course she had the beet salad which was inclusive of mizuna, beet, goat cheese, and walnuts. The ingredients by itself is fine, however together it did not make any sense. Mizuna and beet tasted odd, nor did it mix with the goat cheese. The second course was equally disasterous, we both had the rigattoni pasta. It was similar to farmer's pasta, however the pancetta they used was overly greasy, the wife could only finish 5 bites of her food whereas I finished half of the dish then came the pounding headache when you consume too much oil. The dessert for the wife was equally unimpressive, she had the banana cake which had extensive frosting which made the course much too sweet, the sorbet that I had was a pleasant surprise.

Upon our arrival, we were promptly seated, however the booth had bread crumbs all over the chair where I had to swipe to get the mess onto the floor. Do not quite understand why they use leather seating on the booth when you can visably see wine/food stains all over the place. At least use a higher grade of suede, so that the stains can be cleaned up. Assuming if people only go there for drinks, it would make sense, but it was just dirty and unattractive. The hardwood flooring also had food remnants like bread crumbs and other stuff over it, not remotely attractive at all. Can't understand why people cannot tidy the place up when there was like 10 wait staff around and only about 6 parties.

Will not go back for the food, maybe for drinks because people seem to make mentions of it here. The service was impeccable, though I did go to a restaurant and if the food is completely thoughtless then what is the point? The presentation of the food was attractive, but relative to French cuisine, it was not much better or worse. Or maybe it's because we were using the dine about town special, so they served us the worst food possible, in that case, please disregard my comment.

This bar is a great place to go before a night out or to have a relaxing conversation with someone. Went to the XYZ bar and the lower lobby in the W hotel. The crowd is always late 20's to early thirties, but everyone usually looks pretty trendy regardless of age. The downstairs area has couches and chairs to relax in and people watch.

Overpriced cocktails and annoyingly trendy clientele but the decor is fabulous. I'd go here if I were on an expense account or someone else were paying...

This place is on the second floor in the W. Good place to get drinks before heading out for a night on the town. Lots of booths to sit in and there is a live DJ there spinning some good beats. The bartenders were super friendly and helpful. Crowd was upscale professionals. Drinks were on the expensive side, 10 and 11 for martinis.

This place is unbelievable. My uncle hosted a huge birthday party for my aunt at XYZ. We could all order anything we wanted. It was a dream. I made a pig of myself. Everything was delicious--the appetizers, the main courses, the desserts (I ordered THREE!), the cocktails. The service was surprisingly quick for such a large party. It was probably a group of 25. I would highly recommend this place. I didn't have to pay that night, but if I did, I admit I would be a little bit turned off by the prices. But then again, I'd say this place is worth splurging on once in a (great) while. And adding to others' comments, VERY stylish place.

Downstairs in the hotel, the service was not great so we decided to move upstairs and wow, what a difference. Amazing bartender. He mixed great drinks, was friendly and a great conversationalist, and really made for a great atmosphere. At his recommendation I had, for the first time, chartreuse, which is a wild liquor similar to absinthe that (i have now learned) is hard to find but totally fun to drink. XYZ has plenty of it, as well as some other fun and unusual drinks, and also has a great bartender and a fun crowd. So my advice to you is, head straight upstairs for a great bar(and bartender!), but definitely avoid the downstairs.

I tried the dine about town menu with my husband. We really enjoyed the overall look and feel of the place. It feels trendy and very sexy, but with an understated elegance. My favorite part was the wine list, which was awesome. They also offered an optional wine pairing with the dine about town menu, which turned out to have some really interesting and tasty choices. I think this is a good place to go on a date, but maybe not with a big group. Oh, and the desserts were out of this world.

I just got back from San Fran and I went to XYZ on the recommendation from a friend who used to live in the city. I loved it! The atmosphere was beautiful (and we didn't even make it to bar area just to the lobby). The service was great and the drinks very, very strong. I would so recommend XYZ in San Francisco and it makes me want to check out my local W hotel!

My dining experience matched my expectations: very chic, very trendy, very long on flash and very low on substance. My entree arrived only partially cooked. Although the wine list was very impressive, with an extensive selction at a variety of price points, our waiter couldn't be bothered to comment on any of them, when he finally showed up at our table. Although the waiter apologized for the entree and comped our dessert, there was no explanation offered.

A friend and I went here for drinks and chatting. It was perfect, we got there before any club kids so it wasn't crowded until later. You do have to go outside the hotel to smoke, which was a little annoying - but the waitress was nice to make sure we still has our spots when we came back. The martini's were great. The bathrooms were clean. The seats were comfy. You couldn't ask for more. Yeah, the drinks are about $10, but just get one with a lot of alcohol and soon you won't care!

I went for dinner and I liked the atmosphere a lot. The food was very good, but overpriced for what it really is. Their desserts were the best part--they are absolutely stellar! I was there for my aunt's birthday party and there were a lot of people, so I got away with ordering like 3 desserts without anyone noticing. I know that is probably not "right" but damn those desserts were good!!!

Wife and I went to lunch on a Sunday. I could have found this menu at Denny's. Top 5 dishes were breakfast/eggs. Wife got a suped up turkey sandwich for $14 and I got a mediocre salad for $14. Food was average if that. Wait staff was late and poor on everything. Only saving grace is the host - Dean Dillon. He noticed that things were not going well for us and offered to remove the drinks. Thanks Dean!

After reading the many reviews of XYZ Restaurant and chef Malachi Harland's food, I decided I should give it a try and see what the buzz was all about. Being a cynic by nature...I was ready for the worst. But starting with the gracious greeting I received upon arriving to the many thank you's I received as I made my out, XYZ didn't miss a beat. The food never failed to satisfy. The timeing between courses was excellent. The service was friendly and proficient and with over 400 wines to choose from, I was more than able to find a few bottles that satisfied myself and my guests. If I had to wager one complaint it would be that the music, at times, seems more fitting to the bustling bars than the restaurant. This, however, did little to detract from the fun I was having in the dining room.

Overall, I would go back for drinks at the bar but I'm a little non plus at the restaurant side. I was sat in a broken bench chair which meant I was balancing on my right cheek all night which is not conducive for food enjoyment. The only stand out spot was dessert. This could have been because the SF dine about town menu offered wasn't very imaginative but you'd think they would try to impress us cheap skaters :)

This could have been because the SF dine about town menu offered wasn't very imaginative but you'd think they would try to impress us cheap skaters :)

Pros: good atmosphere, bar

Cons: disfunctional chairs

We had the most incredible dinner on NYE. Five course, gourmet dinner for $85! Man this place has changed (at least the prices have). Food was better than ever, and the service was perfect. Very freindly, upbeat and fun! Can't wait to see what they'll do for Valentine's.

Apparently the W has spent some money on the vibe here. The music selection is sooo much better (house DJ?), and the sound is ten times better. Im not the only one to notice, this place was packed! All the beautiful people are back. The Thursday night dance club addition was brilliant!

I dined here a few nights ago and was very pleased. It is very obvious there is a new chef in town. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. I am planning to have my anniversary dinner here in a few weeks.

This bar should not be passed up! The candle lit ambiance and the beautiful people that this bar attracts is just one of the many remarkable things XYZ is fabulous for. The service is friendly and the drinks are delicious. There is also the W cafe down below with a delectable assortment of appetizers and more drinks. Did I mention they make a great mint chocolate martini. Great place to start you weekend adventure!

I'm sure most of us will not miss those pretentious fools who think they are part of the "A" List. These are the type that moved from out of state, made a good living, thought they ruled SF only to be laid off a year later. Feels good to be part of the List doesn't it?
