I've taken my rabbits to Dr. Tom, as we call him, for a number of years. He is bar none the best vet I've met on island for rabbit care. I've taken the rabbits to other vets on Oahu and some of them are clueless about rabbit care. Dr. Tom has the advantage of having taken care of rabbits in his personal life so he knows their unique needs. For example, I had a male rabbit that stopped eating for several days. He looked like he was hungry. He would sniff the food and look at it but after one bite he would stop eating. I took him to a reputable vet in Kailua, Dr. John Haddock, who did a blood test and an exam. The blood test cost $100. He told me the rabbit was old and it was his time to go. I just didn't feel it was the right diagnosis. I called around and found Dr. Tom. Dr. Tom spent just a few minutes looking at the rabbit's back teeth. He realized the teeth were overgrown. Rabbit teeth are like human nails. They don't stop growing. So unless the rabbit wears down the teeth with food consumption, the teeth can become overgrown enough to cause pain. Dr. Tom put the rabbit under anesthesia and he filed the overgrown back teeth. The rabbit was good as new. He went on to live another 3 more years. Had I listened to the other vet, I most likely would have put my rabbit down. I don't think the other vet is a bad person. He wasn't experienced with exotic animals but he should have told us that rather than charging us for an expensive visit and then telling us the animal was suffering from old age.

Dr. Tom also helped us with our dog's knee operation. I think he's very thorough and very bright. He's a bit goofy but I like that about him. His place, Makai Animal Hospital, is professional, very clean, and reliable. They have more than enough staff to take care of any pet issues. It's really a mini animal hospital. I've been quite pleased with their services. Lastly, we've boarded our pets there and had no worries.
